PLTA Pack Trial

We’re offering both basic and advanced trails. Both will be running at the same time, so you will need a different handler for each llama you wish to register. Being a member of PLTA is not required, however, there is a small fee per each handler that is a non-member. This fee allows all handlers to be covered by the PLTA insurance policy.

For those who are new to pack trials, we recommend that you visit packllama.org to get ac-quainted with PLTA and the expectations for each llama. At the basic levels it’s pretty much a walk in the park with your llamas.

51. Basic Pack Trial

The Basic pack trial tests early stages of training and conditioning against minimal packing requirements. The llama’s natural ability and trust in their handler are being evaluated. This level is designed to encourage maximum participation by new and aspiring llama packers and pack llamas. Basic trials are designed to reflect this philosophy as well as being a fun and educational event. A llama certified at the Basic level is beginning to learn to pack. It is expected to be willing to hike short distances with a light load. It is expected to be well-behaved and responsive to its handler, as well as being able to negotiate simple obstacles composed of single components. The certified Basic Pack Llama is a competent day hiker on easy trails.

Basic Pack Trial General Requirements

Criterion RequirementsMinimum age of 24 mos, 24 to 30 mos. carries no loadLoad (% of body weight) 0 - 10% of body weightDistance 3 milesElevation Gain 250 to 500 feetotal Number of Obstacles Required 5Performance Deductions Allowed 5Successful Trials Required for Certificate 2, including 1 carrying wt.

52. Advanced Pack Trial

Advanced trials are designed to test a llama’s ability to deal with a moderately demanding packing environment. The requirements are more stringent than at the Basic level. They are based on the expectation that the lla-ma will be moderately fit and be able to negotiate more complex obstacles than at the Basic level. This is reflected in the longer distance, greater elevation gain and more numerous and more difficult obstacles that make up the standard the llama is tested against. A llama certified at the Advanced level is still learning to pack. This llama has attained a mental and physical skill adequate to pack moderate distances, and negotiate obstacles that are more demanding than a Basic llama would face, but are still composed of a single component. A certified Ad-vanced Pack Llama is a competent overnight packer on gentle journeys. Requirements for an Advanced pack trial are shown in the table below.

Advanced Pack Trial General Requirements

Criterion RequirementsAge At least 3 years oldLoad (percent of body weight) 15% of body weightDistance 5 milesElevation Gain 750 to 1000 feetTotal Number of Obstacles Required 10Performance Deductions Allowed 3Successful Trials Required for Certificate 4, or 3 if the llama has a Basic Certificate

Additionally, all llamas will be required to be weighed, and have task management evalu-ations. Tasks include being staked out for 20 mins. and standing quietly for haltering.

You may sign up to become a member and register your llamas at the show. Please sign up for the pack trial in advance. However, we will accept registrations at the event.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the pack trial, however, only llamas owned by PLTA mem-bers and are registered with the PLTA will have their trial applied to their certification require-ments.
