Nursing facilies across the state are “at a crisis stage,” according to Frank Romano, with 20 facilies closing last year and an esmated 39 more expected to close this year. Medicaid reimbursements are smaller than the actual cost of providing care. He stated, “Aſter 40 years in this business, I’ve never seen it as bad as it is today.” Senator Faman advised that the state’s Medicaid reimbursement has not changed since 2007. He outlined several pieces of pending legislaon that could help the situaon. He said there are 401 nursing homes in Massachuses with operang deficits, some as high as $1 million each year. “You as an industry, have our aenon,” stated Gregoire. Last year she chaired the House Commiee on Elder Affairs and is now chair of the Joint Commiee on State Administraon and Oversight. “This is something facing every person in Massachuses,” Murray stated, “There is no queson that this industry is in crisis.” He is a member of the House Ways and Means Commiee and advised that “Advocacy is key.” The reimbursement gap and subsequent losses in nursing facilies’ operang budgets is resulng in banks refusing to lend to or refinance exisng facilies. Funding maers! Eighty-one percent of Massachuses residents believe increased funding for nursing home care and direct care staff is a priority. As the Baby Boomer populaon becomes the fastest growing demographic in the state, this crisis in the nursing care industry grows as well. It must be addressed. Pictured: Frank C.
