Liberty-PerryCommunitySchoolCorporationiscommittedtoenablingeachstudenttoreachanoptimumlevelofacademicachievement,aswellasenhancingphysical,emotional,andsocialdevelopment.Preparingstudentsfortheworldoftomorrowisapriority.Teachersareencouragedtotakeinitiativeandbeinnovativewheneducatingtheleadersoftomorrow.SelmaElementarySchoolisaKindergartenthroughfifthgradebuilding,whichhasanapproximateenrollmentof530students.Teachersofferarichandvariedcurriculumthatisbothstudent-centeredandresponsivetotheindividualneedsofeachstudent.Teachersexhibitadesiretostaycurrentandtogrowintheirprofession.Inadditiontoweeklyinstructioninmusic,art,andgym/health,SelmaElementaryoffersinstructionincomputerswithup-to-dateprograms,whichencouragestudentuseaswellasmonitoreachstudent’sacademicprogress.SelmaElementarySchoolisaC.L.A.S.S.school.C.L.A.S.S.standsforConnectingLearningAssuresSuccessfulStudents.TheC.L.A.S.S.modelbelievesgiventhepropersupportandguidance,thatallpeoplehavetheabilitytobeproductivecontributorstotheworld.Itistheinterdependenceofcharacter/socialdevelopmentandcognitivedevelopmentthatdrivestheseabilities.ThecharactertraitsadoptedbySelmaElementarySchoolinconjunctionwithC.L.A.S.S.arerespect,manners,cooperation,self-control,personalbest,kindness,commonsense,responsibility,andhonesty.Thestudentsrefertothesetraitsaslifelines,andtheteachersincorporatetheselifelinesdailyintheirclassroomsandthroughoutthebuilding.AnotheraspectofC.L.A.S.S.isconsistentbuilding-wideprocedures.Teachersareresponsibleforcreatingtheirownclassroomprocedures,however,proceduresforthehallway,convocations,restrooms,andlunchroomarebuilding-widebasedonourC.L.A.S.S.charactertraits.

Parentsmayrequestaconferencewithateacherand/oradministratoranytimethroughouttheyear.Parentsareencouragedtokeepinconstantcontactwiththeirchild’steacher.

ATTENDANCE POLICY Goodattendanceisessentialifstudentsaretoachievesuccessandreachtheirpotential.TheStateofIndianaplaceseducationatthetopofitspriorities.Accordingly,itisincumbentuponthisschooltouseeveryreasonablemeasuretoinstilldutifulattendancehabitsineverystudent.Averyhighpositivecorrelationexistsbetweenformallearningandschoolattendance.Thispolicy’spurposeistoencourageacademiceffortandsuccessbydiscouragingunacceptableabsenteeism.Therefore,thefollowingattendancepolicyisenforcedatSelmaElementarySchool.Reporting Absences Allstudentabsencesneedtobereportedtotheschoolofficebyparentsorguardiansby10:00A.M.onthedayoftheabsenceinordertostatethenatureoftheabsence.AbsenceswillbeEXCUSEDiftheschoolisnotifiedbefore10:00a.m.andthenatureoftheabsenceislistedbelowasqualifyingasanexcusedabsence.Iftheparentorguardiandoesnotcontacttheschoolthatdayorcallsafter10:00a.m.,itwillbeconsideredanUNEXCUSEDabsence.Iftheparentdoesnotcall,theschoolwillattempttocalltheparentthatdaytodocumenttheabsence,butitwillstillbeconsideredunexcused.Communicationwiththeschoolforabsencesisimportanttoensurethatstudentsarenottruantfromschool.Truancyisbeingabsentfromschoolwithouttheknowledgeorconsentoftheparent/guardianandschoolofficials.Ifnophoneisavailableatthehome,aletterfromtheparentorguardianstatingalackofaphonemaybefiledwiththeschoolprincipal.Thosestudentsmaythenbeexcusedwithanoteonthedayfollowingthestudentabsence.Excused Absences AstudentwillbeallowedamaximumofEIGHTparent/guardianexcusedabsencespersemester.Personalillnessthatisexcusedbyawrittennotefromaphysicianwillnotbecountedtowardstheeightparent/guardianexcusedabsences.Afterthemaximumofeightparent/guardianexcusedabsences,allfollowingabsencesthatsemesterwillbecountedasunexcusedwithoutproofofmedicaldocumentation.Thefollowingcircumstancesareconsideredexcusedabsences:*PersonalIllness*Deathorseriousillnessoftheimmediatefamily*Funeralifschoolisnotifiedinadvance*Studentmedicalordentalappointment*Religiousobservancewhenapprovedinadvance*Headlice(firstdayonly)*Suspensionsfromschool*Otherreasonsexcusedbytheprincipal/designeeUnexcused Absences *Anyabsencewithoutmedicaldocumentationafterthemaximumofeightparent/guardianexcusedabsencespersemester*Vacationsduringschooltimeareunexcused.Parents/guardiansareadvisedtoplanfamilyactivitieswhenschoolisnotinsession.*Truancy*Anyabsencenotreportedtotheschoolbyparents/guardiansby10:00a.m.onthedayoftheabsence*Headliceafterthefirstday*OtherreasonsnotnotedasexcusedTardies Theschooldaybeginsat8:15.Anystudententeringthebuildingafter8:15willbeconsideredTARDY.Fivetardieswillequalonedayofunexcusedabsence.

Attendance for Extra-Curricular Activities Studentsmustbeinattendanceonthedayofanextra-curricularactivity.Ifthestudentgoeshomeillfromschool,heorsheisineligibletoattendorparticipateinanyeventsscheduledforthatday.Compulsory Attendance Parents/guardiansareultimatelyresponsiblefortheirchild’sschoolattendance.Itisunlawfulforaparenttofail,neglect,orrefusetosendhis/herchildtoapublicschoolforthefulltermasrequiredunderthischapterunlessthechildisbeingprovidedwithinstructionequivalenttothatgiveninpublicschools.Thissectiondoesnotapplyduringanyperiodwhenthechildisexcusedfromattendanceunderthischapter.Penalty:ApersonwhoknowinglyviolatesthischaptercommitsaClassBMisdemeanor.Reference:IndianaCode20-8.1-3-34and20-8.1-3-37.Excessive Absences *Amaximumof8dayswillbeexcusedpersemesterbyparent/guardian*Afterthemaximumof8excusedabsencespersemester,allfollowingabsenceswillbeunexcused*Allabsenceswillbeexcusedwhenmedicaldocumentationisgivenuponreturningtoschool*Parentswillbenotifiedbyletterafter3ormoreunexcusedabsencespersemester*ParentswillbenotifiedandthestudentwillbeplacedonanAttendanceContractforthatsemesterafter6ormoreunexcusedabsencespersemester*Possibleconsequencesofexcessiveunexcusedabsencesof9ormoredayspersemester ~Meetingscheduledwithparentsandadministration ~TruantandEducationalNeglectPapersmaybefiledwiththeDelawareCountyDivision ofFamilyandChildrenServices,asdeemednecessarybytheadministration ~Onceareportismade,theagency,notSelmaElementary,willdetermineconsequences*Atotalof5tardieswillbeconsidered1unexcuseddayofabsence

Library/MediaCenter

Allstudentshaveaccesstothelibraryatleastonceperweektocheckoutbooksandmagazines.Pleasebesurestudentsreturnbooksontime,sootherstudentshavetheopportunitytoreadthem.WeencouragethestudentstomakeregularuseofSelmaElementarySchool’sbeautifullibrary.

! Allstudentsmaycheckouttwobooksforoneweek.Thebooksmayberenewedonetimeforatotalcheckoutoftwoweeks.

! Studentsmayalsocheckout2–4booksforclassassignments,whicharedueoncethe

assignmentdeadlinehasbeenreached.

! Overduenoticeswillbesenthomeattheendofeachmonth.

! Anyoverduebooksoutstandingattheendofthemonthmustbepaidfor,orreturnedtocontinuelibraryprivileges.

ReportCards/GradingSystem

Reportcardsareissuedtwiceeachsemester.Studentsareexpectedtotaketheirreportcardshomeanddiscusstheirgradeswiththeirparents.Parentsareaskedtosignthereportcardandreturnittotheschool.Thefollowinggradingsystemwillbeutilizedforgrades2–5:A90–100B80–89C70–79D60-69Fbelow60Kindergartenandfirstgradewillutilizeastandardsbasedreportcardsystem,whichindicatesperformancesasrelatedtoeachoftheidentifiedIndianaAcademicStateStandards

VisitingtheSchool

Parentsandguestsarealwayswelcometovisittheschool.Allvisitorsmusthaveup-to-date,approvedbackgroundcheckspriortoparticipatinginallschooldayevents.

BreakfastandLunchPrograms

Menuswillbesenthomewithallstudents.Ifmorethanafewdaysaretobecharged,aparentmustmakearrangementswiththeprincipalinadvance.PlaceweeklymealfeesinanenvelopeonMondayorFridayofeachweek.Besuretowritethechild’snameontheenvelope.Applicationsforfreeand/orreducedbreakfastandlunchfeesmaybeobtainedinthefrontoffice.ApplicationsmustbesubmittedbeforeOctober1ofthecurrentschoolyear.Youmayalsovisitcafeprepay.comtopayyourchild’scafeteriabill.

PTO–ParentTeacherOrganizationPTOmeetingswillbeheldfrequentlyatSelmaElementarySchool.Thesemeetingsoffereveryoneanopportunitytobeinvolvedintheirchild’sschool.

SpecialStudentGroupsLeadersofScouts,Brownies,CubScouts,oranyotherspecialgroup–Pleasepresentyourgroupswithascheduleofmeetingtimes,sothechildrenwillnothavetocallhometonotifyparents.Itwouldbeappreciatediftheleadersofeachgroupwouldprovidealistofstudentmemberstothefrontoffice.

DirectoryInformation

TheCorporationhasestablishedthefollowinginformationabouteachstudentas“directoryinformation”:EachyeartheCorporationwillprovidepublicnoticetostudentsandtheirparentsofitsintenttomakeavailable,uponrequest,certaininformationknownas“directoryinformation”.TheBoarddesignatesasstudent“directoryinformation”:astudent’sname;address;telephonenumber;dateandplaceofbirth;photograph;majorfieldofstudy;participationinofficially-recognizedactivitiesandsports;heightandweight,ifamemberofanathleticteam;datesofattendance;dateofgraduation;awardsreceived;honorrolls;scholarships.TheCorporationwillmaketheaboveinformationavailableuponalegitimaterequestunlessaparent,guardian,oradultstudentnotifiestheschoolinwritingwithin10daysfromthedateofthisnotificationthathe/shewillnotpermitdistributionofanyorallsuchinformation.

StudentDress

Pleasemakesureyourchildisdressedappropriatelyforschool.Studentclothingandappearanceshouldnotdrawundueattentionfromotherstudentsorfacultyordisruptnormalroutine.Ifthereisdoubtabouttheappropriatenessofagarment,itshouldnotbeworn.Attiretypicallywornatthebeach,inthegarden,yard,orloungingathomeisnotappropriateforschool.Clothingandaccessoriesthatadvertise,promote,orglorifytheuseofalcohol,tobacco,oranillegalsubstanceareinappropriate.Hats,caps,andbandanaswillnotbewornduringtheschooldayinthebuilding.Baremidriff,backlesshalters,spaghettistraptops,tanktops,andmeshshirtsarenottobeworn.Shoesmustbewornatalltimes.Flip-flopsarenotconsideredtobeappropriateschoolattire.

TransportationPolicies

1. Parentsshouldhavechildrenreadyandwaitingforthebus.Becauseoftheshuttlebusarrangement,busesareonascheduleandmustarriveatthehighschoolby7:50a.m.

2. Ifyourchildisnotgoingtoridethebus,pleasemotionforthedrivertocontinuetheroute.

3. Parentswishingtopickuptheirchildrenafterschoolshouldcometotheofficeorphonethe

officepriorto2:00pmeachschoolday.Ifyouintendtopickupyourchildonadailybasis,pleasesendanotewithyourchildthefirstweekofschool.Parentspickingupstudentsfromschoolmayeitherpickthemupintheoffice,ormayutilizethecarpick-uplineonthesouthsideoftheschool.

4. Parentsarenotallowedtowaitinthebuslottogettheirchildrenasbusesarebeingboarded.

5. Ifachildisgoingtoalocationotherthantheirregulardestinationafterschool,aparentmust

sendanotegrantingpermission.Notesarerequiredbybothpartieswhenonechildisplanningtogohomewithanother.Notesshouldbegiventotheclassroomteacher,andtheteacherwilldeliverthenotetotheappropriatebusdriver.Notesshouldincludeaphonenumberforthestudentwhoisridingadifferentbus.

BusConductandSafetyRules

Thebusconductandsafetyrulesaredesignedtopromotesafetyontheschoolbusatalltimes.Thebusdriverhasauthority,whichwillberecognizedandsupportedbyschooladministration.Foreveryone’ssafety,thebusdrivermustbeheard,beabletoheartrafficsounds,suchassirens,andbeobeyedbystudentsquicklyandefficiently.AllstudentsarerequiredtoabidebytheBusConductandSafetyRules.AttheBusStop

1. Beontime.Boardandleavethebusonlyatyourassignedstop,unlessyouhavetheappropriatepermissioninadvance.

2. Stayoutofthestreetandawayfromtheroad.

3. Waittoboarduntilthebuscomestoacompletestopandthebusdriverhasopenedthedoor.

Showrespectwhenboardingthebusanddonotpushorrushotherstudents.

LeavingtheBus

1. Usepatience,taketurns,anddonotpushwhendepartingthebus.

2. Onceoff,cleartheareaimmediately.Waitforthesignalfromthebusdriverbeforecrossinginfrontofthebus.Remembertowalkquicklyinfrontofthebustocrossthestreet.

Schooladministrationhastherighttoremoveastudent’sbusprivileges.Intheeventastudentlosestheirrighttoridethebus,itwillbetheresponsibilityoftheparentorguardiantoprovidetransportationtoandfromschoolforthedurationofthebussuspension.Pleaserefertothebusdisciplinegridonthefollowingpages.

CounselingServices

Thisprogramprovidesindividualandsmallgroupcounselingtostudentsfortopicssuchassocialskills,angermanagement,studyskills,self-esteem,andanxiety.Allstudentsreceiveclassroomguidancelessonsontopicssuchasconflictresolution,respect,andbullyingawareness.Counselingfocusesonthesocialandemotionalhealthofstudents,whichisimportantforbeingsuccessfulinboththeschoolandcommunitysettings."

SpeechandLanguageTherapyServices

TheSpeechandLanguageprogramprovidesspeechsoundcorrectionaswellasremediationforexpressiveandreceptivelanguage,auditoryprocessing,andmemoryskillsforstudentsinKindergartenthroughfifthgrade.StudentsworkinsmallgroupsorindividuallywiththeSpeech/LanguagePathologist.Kindergarten,1st,and4thgradestudentsreceivehearingscreeningsaswellasanystudentperparentorteacherrequest.

PesticideApplicationNoticeforParents/Students

TheLibertyPerrySchoolCorporationpracticesintegratedpestmanagement,aprogram,whichcombinespreventativetechniques,non-chemicalpestcontrolmethodsandtheappropriateuseofpesticideswithapreferenceforproductsthataretheleastharmfultohumanhealthandtheenvironment.Applicationsofpesticidesaremadeonlywhendeemednecessarytocontrolapestproblemandaftertryingothermeanstocontrolaproblem.Theterm“pesticide”includesinsecticides,herbicides,rodenticidesandfungicides.Weareestablishingaregistryofpersonswhowishtobenotified48hourspriortopesticidesapplications.Tobeincludedinthisregistry,pleasecompletetheSchoolPesticideRegistryFormlocatedonthelibertyperry.orgwebpage,thenreturnittotheschoolcorporationheadquarters.

Gym/HealthEducation

Eachstudentwillneedapairoftennisshoesforgym.Ifyourchilddoesnotweartennisshoesonadailybasis,pleasekeepasparepairatschoolforgymdays.

Eachstudentwillneedtobringanoldshirttowearwhenpainting.Pleasemarktheinsideoftheshirtwiththechild’sname.

ExceptionalLearners

Allstudentshavetheabilitytolearn,butallstudentslearndifferently.AtSelmaElementarySchool,thereareavarietyofsupportsinplaceforallstudentsfromKindergartenthroughfifthgrade.Supportsmaybegiveninthegeneraleducationclassroomunderthedirectionofthegeneraleducationteacher.Someinstructionisgiveninsmallgroupswheremoretimecanbedevotedtoindividuallearning,andresourcetimeisavailableforstudentswhoneedadditionalinstructionandassistancewithworkcompletion.

StudentConduct

Studentsareunderthejurisdictionofschoolofficialsandschoolruleswhileatschoolorattendingaschoolfunction,whichincludestravelingtoandfromschoolortheschoolfunction.PleaserefertoIC20-33-8-10concerningschooldiscipline.StudentsareexpectedtomaintainbehaviorthatemphasizestheSelmaElementarySchoolLifelines.Thefollowingrulesprovideguidelinesforstudentconduct.

1. Studentsareexpectedtotreateachotherinarespectfulmannershowingkindness.

2. Studentsareexpectedtokeeptheirhandstothemselvesandavoidtouching

orbotheringothersusingself-control.

3. Studentsaretoshowrespecttoschoolpersonnelandfollowtheirinstructions.

4. Studentsmustavoidtheuseoflanguagethatisinappropriate,distracting,or

hurtful.Mannersshouldbeusedatalltimes.

5. Studentsareexpectedtocooperateandobeyallschoolrules.

6. Studentsmustdailypracticetheirpersonalbestandfollowallclassroomrules.

StatementofComplianceandNon-DiscriminationPolicy

SupervisionStudentsareunderthesupervisionoftheschoolauthoritiesfromthetimetheyleavehomeinthemorninguntiltheyreturntotheirhomeintheafternoon.Studentsarealsounderschoolsupervisionatclasspartiesandathleticevents.Teachersareondutyatallschoolfunctions,andtheyhavetheauthoritytocorrectorreprimandanystudentwhodoesnotconducthimself/herselfinthemannerofagoodschoolcitizen.

Non-CustodialParentRights

Ifanon-custodialparentisnottovisitorseerecordsofastudent,acourtordermustbeonfileintheschooloffice.

Retention

Astudentwillbepromotedtothesucceedinggradelevelwhenheorshehas:

1. completedthecourserequirementsatthepresentlyassignedgrade;2. intheopinionoftheprofessional,achievedtheinstructionalobjectivesset

forthepresentgrade;3. demonstratedsufficientproficiencytopermithimorhertomoveaheadin

theeducationalprogramofthenextgrade;4. demonstratedthedegreeofsocial,emotional,andphysicalmaturation
