Our teachers returned on Monday and participated in professional learning with Scone High School and Muswellbrook High School on Visible Learning. This learning for teachers is to build their capability to implement research-based best practice in classrooms. This is the third year of ongoing training and we are seeing the results of this learning in our students. Students have reported on the Tell Them From Me survey that they feel there is effective use of learning time and that there is rigour and relevance and high expectations of them in the classroom. These ratings have been at or above the state average. This training is having a positive impact on student learning. The other training that our staff have been attending is Visible Wellbeing. The two final sessions this week have been on Habits and Goals. We have been very thankful to Where There’s a Will for organising and funding this training on Positive Education and I encourage all parents to follow the Where There’s a Will Facebook page as there are great opportunities being provided to parents this term. The Strength Switch sessions will be offered free to parents for this year only. This training is usually at a cost of $250 to parents so I strongly encourage you all to get behind this generous offer. See the article later in this newsletter for more details. Our students have settled in quickly to their learning and are set to optimise their learning throughout the term. I would like to welcome the new students and their families to our school and know that you will enjoy being part of this great learning community. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back to what is shaping up to be a fantastic term for Scone Public School!

NDIS - SCHOOL PROCESS FOR THE PROVISION OF SUPPORT DURING SCHOOL HOURS We have had a number of service providers (eg. Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Counselling Services) contacting the school to organise a time to provide support or therapy to students in the school setting. As a result of this influx and demand our school has set up the following procedures to ensure the safety and clear communication of expectations to any parent requiring a service provision in the school.

1. The parent is to make the first contact with the school to outline who will be providing a service to their child and the nature of this service. (Documented request - Appendix 6 - Request for service provision to be conducted during school hours)

2. Meeting with parent and school staff (Principal or Deputy Principal) to establish whether a service provider should provide a service within the school setting. This decision takes into consideration the individual circumstances of the student or group of students and wider needs of the school.

3. The service provider must enter into an Engagement Agreement (Appendix 5) 4. The service provider must provide the school with appropriate Working With Children Check (WWCC)

documentation prior to starting their service at the school 5. The service provider must undergo an induction at the school prior to commencing services 6. The school has the responsibility to review the service provision and withdraw external provider access

if it is no longer in the student’s educational interest or it has adverse consequences for other students, staff or the general running of the school. This will be communicated to the parents and carers.

2019 SCHOOL CONCERT Our biennial school concert is just around the corner and your child’s teacher has already been busy planning spectacular items. Please keep an eye out in your child’s bag for information regarding costuming and requirements for your child’s item. If you haven’t received a note yet please contact your child’s teacher.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

The Department of Education wants to hear from parents about before and after school care arrangements that will support them most effectively. The NSW Government is committed to providing before and after school care to all students of public primary schools in New South Wales. As part of the reform, a parent web form has been established by Service NSW that will enable parents to tell us about their specific care needs and to stay up to date with any new developments. The information provided by parents will help the Department of Education to understand your needs, give them insights into where there are gaps in service delivery and help to ensure the extra places are delivered where they are required. Have your say today at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/basc (using Chrome, Safari).

Alternatively contact the team responsible for rolling out the before and after care election commitment at [email protected].

APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY AND EXCELLENCE

A CHARACTER STRENGTH TO SLOW DOWN THE BUSYNESS Many of us feel the busyness and fatigue that comes with day to day living. We comment on how fast the year is going, how busy we are and how much there is to do. For many of us, we desire to cut back or change something, but everything seems so important. What if part of the solution was to make use of what we already have to help us calm and slow down, rather than the pursuit of work/life balance (parenting/life balance) that seems just out of reach? The Character Strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is the intentional practice of noticing and appreciating beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in various domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience. It is the intentional looking up at the sky when outside and noticing the blue, the intentional breathing in of fresh air, food cooking or freshly mown grass. It is noticing the architecture of buildings in the city, the colours of a parakeet, the sound of the ocean.

Term 3 Week 1 Thursday 25 July 2019 The appreciation of beauty and excellence compels us to stop and pay attention to the here and now. It is enhanced by tuning into our 5 senses and allowing our bodies and minds a moment of rest. It allows us to savour the many small but wonderful experiences we have each day - such as the smell of coffee, fresh bread or our dinner cooking. Ask yourself and your family what things you have found that are worth appreciating and noticing and share these observations with one another. You’ll be amazed at the wonder around us and the opportunities everywhere to “stop and smell the roses”. Enjoy!
