PRINCIPALS REPORT
Welcome to another fantastic year at Scone High School. It has been heart-warming to experience the positive approach to schooling that all of our students have been displaying this year. Students have begun their lessons knowing how to be prepared, ready to make strong relationships and engaging in the learning that is being delivered. Year 6 Orientation Day occurred this week, designed to begin the discussion and experiences in readiness for 2021. Following this, I have received feedback from one of the Year 6 teachers, which I will share with you;
“I have spent the day in the Food Technology room and I just want to let you know how fantastic your year ten students have been. I have watched them engage each of our students, help them master skills and ensure the safety of each child. Each of your students were respectful, personable and a delight to work with. “
We love the way they take on new challenges also – well done team. I would like to acknowledge our graduation class of 2019. Following the completion of their HSC, they are now on their way, creating their new journey with quality skills in how to learn that have been developed with their teachers here at Scone High School. I have added the data on where our students have headed.

I have today reviewed student attendance rates for 2020, it is wonderful to see that all year groups have very strong attendance patterns. The greatest input to stronger learning outcomes is high attendance rates at school. We have a target in 2020 of encouraging 65% of students to be at school above 90% of the time. In order for us all to achieve our best, I am asking for your assistance in this. The table below shows how each day impacts on the learning times across 13 years of schooling. We are always here to assist you when your child cannot attend school and would love to assist you in this.

I had the absolute pleasure in joining some of our Year 11 Music students to witness the Hunter Valley’s best HSC Music students performing their HSC pieces. Indyana Taylor is one of those. I must report back that her performance was superb and fully reflective of her perseverance and Mrs Delachantos’ efforts at school. Well Done Indy.

Young Mob, which is delivered here by World Vision Australia, has started on a very strong foot. This week we experienced a smoking ceremony to welcome us all onto country and to ensure we are ready for the events of the day. Do you recognise this mural? This has been uncovered in A5 classroom, which, before the MPU was finished in 1984 was the school hall. It is signed by the students who painted it in 1985. You might know some of these people. If you have any stories about this mural, please contact the school. What is all this building going on? Over the Christmas break, we had builders in the school creating a new Special Education Classroom. We have welcomed six students to Scone High School this year and they are thoroughly enjoying their new classrooms. There is also some black fencing that has been installed. This fencing is due to continue around the rest of the school, this term. Peer Support Year 7 students have started their relationship learning with our Year 11 Peer Support leaders. During Roll Call, once per week, students meet and work through lessons that encourage them to build strong peer relationships. These lessons are some of my favourite moments, as I get to see real leadership in action.

SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL Where there’s a Will motto “bringing colour to life” was certainly the theme of the 2020 Swimming Carnival. It was fantastic to see so many students dress in their house colours. The carnival was a credit to the house captains and other senior students for ensuring participation in both competitive and novelty events were at an all-time high. In 10 years of organising carnivals I have never seen such an inspirational and motivating group of young people encourage younger students to get involved. We had our usual “Super Fish” shine in the competitive events and some new faces in Year 7 who certainly made their mark. Congratulations to the following students who received age champion awards:
Age Girls Boys
12 Chloe Smith
13 Eloise Fisher Jack Roser
14 Riley Fletcher Jack Foley
15 Caitlin Coady Zane Welsh
16 Indi Welsh Ryder McInerney
Seniors Mikayla Farley Jack Coady
The novelty events consisted of a belly flop competition, silly salmon competition and a continuous relay. The Year 12s had their usual fun with large inflatable floating devices, fancy dress and the annual dunking of the Year 12 advisors. Whilst Pannals house spirit was loud throughout the day, the green machine could not defend their “chant off” title from last year. Meekah won the blue-ribbon novelty event of the day and added an additional 200 points to their tally to win the carnival.

The premier event for our competitive swimmers was the Flying 50’s. This event races the fastest male and females over 50 metres in the school regardless of age. Mikayla Farley, of Year 11, took it out for the ladies and Jack Foley, of Year 8, won the boys race this year.
Once again congratulations to the house captains for 2020:

REGIONAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL This year it was a very tight turn around for our Zone Swimming team. Students only had 3 days between the school carnival and the zone carnival. A small team travelled down to Muswellbrook last Friday to showcase their swimming prowess against competitors from Singleton, Muswellbrook and Merriwa Schools. Our team consisted of a range of members, the regular suspects including: Jack Coady, Mikayla Farley, Emily Rose, Riley Brooks, Anekah Bettens, Zane Welsh, Brady Roser and Caitlin Coady, a new face to our swimming team Ryder McInerney and our young guns: Jack Foley, Riley Fletcher, Jack Roser, Jayden Seckold, Eloise Fisher, Sophie Luscomb and Chloe Smith.
We experienced a range of success with some students winning their event at the Zone Carnival. We are now waiting for the results from the Hunter School Office to see who progresses to the Hunter Regional Carnival in Maitland on the 3rd of March. A big thank you to all parents and grandparents who helped transport our students, days like this would not be possible without your continued support of our school sport programs. Written by Loren Heath CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS Our School Canteen needs extra help. If you have some time available on a regular basis, even for an hour or two, our canteen would love to have you join the fun. No experience is required. ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES Regular attendance at school is essential for students to achieve quality life outcomes. Schools, in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. Parents or carers of children of compulsory school age are responsible for ensuring their child attends school every day. Children must commence school by age 6 and then complete year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17, students must be:
in school or registered for home schooling or in approved education or training (e.g. TAFE, traineeship, apprenticeship) or in full-time, paid employment (average 25 hours/week) or in a combination of work, education and/or training.
The brochure Compulsory school attendance - information for parents (PDF 420.5KB) provides more details on the importance of compulsory schooling. Enrolled students 17 years and over are required to attend school regularly to meet Higher School Certificate course requirements. Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
being sick or having an infectious disease having an unavoidable medical appointment being required to attend a recognised religious holiday exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral.
Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student's record.
