POETRY COMPETITION RESULTS A huge thank you the whole student body who participated in our annual Youth Poetry Competition last Wednesday in our school hall. The standard was very high and I’m sure all audience members were extremely impressed with our talented students.

The competition opened with the Infants Section. Congratulations to 1T who won the Stage One Choral Verse Speaking section. 2S were second and 2H third. KR were awarded first place in the Early Stage One class performances, with KH and KW both receiving Highly Commended honours.

Congratulations to Emily, who was our only entrant in the Australian Individual Performance section in Year One. Emily recited a poem she wrote herself and received very positive feedback from our adjudicators.

Lucy was our only entrant in the Early Stage One Individual Poetry Free Choice section. She did very well and also received affirming, constructive comments from our judges.

Well done to Cooper who came first in the Individual Free Choice Year One section. Archie was second and Lachlan and Isabelle both received Highly Commended.

Year 2 Individual Free Choice section saw Shoshana awarded first place, Athena second and Amaya came third.

Our Infants children who individually recited a poem were all complemented on their appropriate use of natural actions, their animated, clear diction and good use of the microphone. Many chose very lengthy poems and this was also admired by all listening.

We had one small group performance from Infants. Amaya, Grace, Hannah and Layla performed very well and were complimented on their obvious high level of commitment to rehearsing their poem. They gave a very polished performance.

In the Primary section of our competition Olivia S and Ava were the only entry in the Year 3 Small Group Performance section. They did very well and looked as though they thoroughly enjoyed the experience

The Year 3 Individual Free Choice section was hotly contested between four students. The standard was very high and congratulations goes to Adelaide who placed first, Lacey came a close second and Olivia S and Rozenna were awarded equal third place.

We had one student in the Year 3 Australian section. Alina recited a poem written by her Aunty and presented a beautiful rendition.

Year 4 had two small group performances. Congratulations to Atticus and Zoran who came first and Charesse, Beth and Isabelle were placed second.

Term 1 Week 11 Tuesday 10 April 2018 Phoebe and Charesse both performed creditably in the Year 4 Individual Free Choice category. Congratulations to Phoebe who came first with Charesse our runner up.

Our Year 4 Individual Australian section saw Beth recite a very entertaining poem. She received encouraging feedback from our adjudicators.

There was only one entry in our Year 5 Small Group Performance category. Well done Chloe and Eva who did a great job performing, and our judges agreed.

Year 5 Individual Free Choice section was a very close contest. Congratulations to Hallie who came first, Eloise was second and Lauren third.

Lachlan deserves high praise for his excellent individual Australian poem recitation. Congratulations to Hannah who came in second.

Individual performances from Year 6 were exceptional. Both Mackenzie and Lilly were amazingly well rehearsed. They competed in separate sections of our competition and both received glowing responses from our adjudicators.

The Primary Choral Verse speaking aspect of our competition saw all Primary classes recite a poem. Congratulations to 3B who won this section, 5/6L came second and 4S third. The standard of our choral verse speaking this year was outstanding. All Infants and Primary class performances were exceptional. Our judges commented upon the self-discipline of all students, evident in the way they watched their teacher conducting them during their performance, their appropriate actions, varied voices and clear articulation. Gratitude goes to our teachers who prepared students so thoroughly and with great aplomb for this annual highlight in our year.

Both Infants and Primary students were exemplary in the way they listened intently and with respect to all performers. Well done students!

Many thanks to our adjudicators, Mrs Molyneux, Miss Prentice and Mr Rayner who had the unenviable job of deciding our winners.

Individual and group winners will be invited to progress to the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Eisteddfod in early June next term. We wish them every success as they perform on the wider stage within our district.

Certificates will be distributed at Friday’s Infants and Primary Assemblies. Please feel free to join us if you can. Nicole Borg

SRC – A TERM IN REVIEW This term our 2018 SRC members have been very busy. We started off the term with our Induction assembly where we heard Upper Hunter mayor Wayne Bedggood and Scone High School student, Amelia Meier speak about the qualities of a good leader. A big thank you to our term 1 year 2 SRC representatives. We raised awareness of Bullying and Epilepsy through our “wear a bit of pink” and “wear a bit of purple” days.

Term 1 Week 11 Tuesday 10 April 2018 Emma and Ella spoke about our multicultural society with the message that everyone belongs though their presentation on Harmony Day. Students also completed activities in their classrooms. Our annual Easter raffled raised $941 for our local farmers in drought. We danced the night away with our Term 1 Disco. The students will be deciding where the money raised will be going during our next meeting. On behalf of the SRC I would like to thank you for all of your support this term. We cannot wait to see what the next 3 terms will bring.

COLES VOUCHERS Thank you to the community members who have helped count the Coles Sports Vouchers. As of last week, we had over 50 000 points to spend. As this has now finished can everyone please make sure that all vouchers are sent in this week.

SPORT TERM 2 Athletics will continue to be Stage 2 and 3 sport until Week 5. As we are moving into cooler weather, sport will be between 12 and 1:30pm. Students will be walking to Bill Rose Complex at this time. Students who have music lessons at this time are advised to talk to the Conservatorium or they will remain at school with high jump students.

CROSS COUNTRY Cross country will be held Friday 13 April. Students will leave the school at 9.30am and walk to Bill Rose to begin their race. The race is for 8 year olds and above. Parents are welcome to attend to cheer their child on.

BAND TRY OUTS The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of music will be available to show students the different instruments required for the school band and give those interested students the opportunity to try them out. Try outs will be held during lunch break on Wednesday 11 April. Students must return the permission form that can be collected from their class teachers.

ANZAC DAY SERVICE Anzac Day is fast approaching. Once again we ask that all students represent our school by marching in the Anzac Day March on Wednesday 25 April.

Students will need to meet in front of the Red Cross building by 10.30am. The march steps off at 10.45am. The Anzac Commemoration Service in Kelly Street at the War Memorial, outside Barwick House will commence at 11.00am. At the end of the service students can be collected from outside Millers clothing shop.

All students will need to be dressed in full summer uniform including hats. Students who have medals from grandparents or other relatives may wear these on the right hand side of their chest. Students should also carry a small bottle of water with them so that they remain hydrated during the service. We have found in previous years that heat has been an issue.

In previous years many of our students have shown an interest in attending the Dawn Service. For those students interested in attending this service it will be held at the Scone War Memorial Swimming Pool commencing at 6.00am.

We look forward to a large number of students participating on this important day. Our Year 5 students may use this community event as part of their leadership portfolio.

Our school Anzac Service will be held early in Term 2.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 12 March and 13 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 16 March, 2018. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

NDIS SCHOOL PROCESS FOR THE PROVISION OF SUPPORT DURING SCHOOL HOURS We have had a number of service providers, (eg. Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Counselling Services) contacting the school to organise a time to provide support or therapy to students in the school setting. As a result of this influx and demand our school has set up the following procedures to ensure the safety and clear communication of expectations to any parent requiring a service provision in the school.

1. The parent is to make the first contact with the school to outline who will be providing a service to their child and the nature of this service (Documented request see Appendix 6 Request for service provision to be conducted during school hours).

2. Meeting with parent and school staff (Principal or Deputy Principal) to establish whether a service provider should provide a service within the school setting. This decision takes into consideration the individual circumstances of the student or group of students and wider needs of the school.

3. The service provider must enter into an Engagement Agreement (Appendix 5). 4. The service provider must provide the school with appropriate Working With Children Check (WWCC)

documentation (this includes 100 points of ID) prior to starting their service at the school. 5. The service provider must undergo an induction at the school prior to commencing services. 6. The school has the responsibility to review the service provision and withdraw external provider access if it

is no longer in the student’s educational interest or it has adverse consequences for other students, staff or the general running of the school. This will be communicated to the parents and carers.

HILARIOUS FAMILY SHOW COMING TO SCONE Kaput, the multi-award winning family show has melted hearts of all ages around the world with its glorious brand of slapstick, acrobatics and total silliness. Be swept up in the mayhem that is the larger-than-life ‘elegant buffoon’ Tom Flanagan, as one man’s life is flipped upside-down by the lonely, dust-covered world that surrounds him. This clumsy ‘Mr. Fixit’ takes one step forward and two-steps back in a highly skilled, hilariously funny and beautifully poignant bit of madness. Tom’s first solo show – Kaput – opened early 2012 to a premier sold-out season at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in the Garden of Unearthly Delights, where it was nominated for Best Circus & Physical Theatre. It then went on to receive critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where the show won Mervyn Stutter’s Spirit of the Fringe Award, and was listed by the Scotsman as one of the top 5 comedy shows at the Fringe. Since then Tom Flanagan’s silent slapstick acrobatic comedy show Kaput has toured four continents, won countless awards and collected fans from 5 to 95 years old.
