Students: National Trend in Kinesiology
September 2010 — Inside Higher Ed
• In past 5 years, the number of undergraduates in Kinesiology programs across United States has increased by 50%
• Continued enrollment pressure through 2030
U-M has had the same pressures for increasing Kinesiology enrollments
Undergraduate Students • 852 Undergraduates enrolled — Highest ever
• This year, Kinesiology exceeded its freshman target by 10% with a selectivity rate of 48% (U-M overall 2010 selectivity was 51%)
• In terms of gender diversity, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, we have a 50-50 female-male ratio in student population
• About 12% of our students are under-represented minorities (African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans) (compared with LSA 10%; Eng 7%)
Undergraduate Students • Kinesiology freshman applications for
Fall 2011, from under-represented minorities are up 39% from last fall (average increase for URM for the 6 schools that admit freshmen is 15%). [LSA, Eng, Art & Design, Nursing, Kinesiology, Music-Theater-Dance]
• The states with the largest increases in under-represented minority applications in Kinesiology are California, Illinois, and Texas … in that order.
• We will have to see about actual “yield”.
