Reason and Prerequisites

You are deploying (or have already deployed) BW on SAP HANA and needinformation about various system landscape configuration options, such as:

- Multiple BW systems running "on" one SAP HANA appliance (multiple DBs oneSAP HANA)

- BW on HANA together with SAP HANA custom data marts or with otherpackaged applications designed to run on SAP HANA.

Solution

Overview

SAP note 1661202 outlines important information about support for multipleapplications on a single SAP HANA system. It is recommended to read SAPnote 1661202 first.

SAP note 1681092 provides information about multiple databases running onone SAP HANA system.

The note you are presently reading (1666670) contains information specificto BW on HANA within the context described in notea 1661202 and 1681092. Itprovides important information about the current status of specific systemlandscape configuration scenarios involving BW on HANA, and it alsoprovides information about important limitations and furtherconsiderations.

The term "BW on HANA" refers to "SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 or 7.4, powered bySAP HANA". In the BW on HANA configuration, the DB server of the BW systemis running in a schema deployed within the SAP HANA database. The BWcentral instance and all application servers are not installed on the SAPHANA system, they are installed on separate servers.

Current Status:

Please see the "further considerations" section of SAP note 1661202 forimportant information to take into account when evaluating any of thevarious scenarios described here.

Scenario - Multiple BW systems on one SAP HANA system:

SAP does not support the deployment of multiple SAP NetWeaver BW systemson one production SAP HANA system.

SAP does support the deployment of multiple SAP NetWeaver BW systemswithin a single-node or scale out non-production SAP HANA system (withone DB for each SAP BW system). For important information, see SAP note1681092 about "Multiple DBs one SAP HANA" system.

Scenario - BW and "exceptions" applications residing on the sameproduction SAP HANA system:

SAP does support the deployment of BW residing on the same production SAPHANA system together with other applications listed in the "exceptions"section of SAP note 1661202 (important: see restrictions in the furtherconsiderations" section of SAP note 1661202...these must be taken intoaccount). Mixed license types are allowed on one SAP HANA system. Thismeans it is supported to run BW on one production SAP HANA system withother applications/scenarios listed in note 1661202, with distinct licensetypes for the BW portion and for the other use cases, respectively.

Scenario - BW and any other packaged application residing on the sameproduction SAP HANA system:

SAP does not support the deployment of BW with any other packagedapplication or scenario (that are not on the "White List" in SAP note1661202) on the same production SAP HANA system . In other words, if theapplication is not listed in the "exceptions" section of SAP note 1661202,it is not supported to run together with SAP BW on SAP HANA..

Exception - Non-production environments:SAP does support running BW together with any other SAP appliction or otherscenario for non-production environments (Development, Quality Assurance, etc). Refer to the "further considerations" section of SAP note 1661202.

Current Release Information (Including Recommendations):

BW on SAP NetWeaver 7.4 is generally available, however in general SAPrecommends for the majority of BW on SAP HANA customers to run BW on SAPNetWeaver 7.31 for the time being. Here is the set of recommendations aboutreleases:

- Customers currently running BW on SAP NetWeaver 7.31 standalone on SAPHANA have no compelling reason to upgrade to SAP NetWeaver 7.4 since nosignificant new features or benefits are provided for BW standalone on SAP

HANA prior to SAP NetWeaver 7.4 SP5.

- BW on SAP NetWeaver 7.4 is currently generally available, but the onlysignificant new features were added with SP2 to enable the "embedded BW"use case; in other words for SAP Business Suite on SAP HANA cases where theBW inside the Suite SAP NetWeaver system is actually in use.

- BW on NW 7.4 SP5 will deliver significant new features, and is planned tobe available the end of this year. This is the recommended target releasefor current BW standalone on SAP HANA customers (and ones planningimplementations).

- It is now possible for customers to run BW on SAP HANA with all parts ofthe BW system running on the SAP HANA DB; presently the SAP NetWeaver ABAPpart should be 7.31 and the BI-JAVA part should be 7.4 SP3 (or higher).Note 1645590 provides some information about supported combinations of theSAP NetWeaver ABAP part of BW with the BI-JAVA part. Thus, it is notnecessary to bring the SAP NetWeaver ABAP part of a BW system to 7.4 simplybecause the BI-JAVA part is 7.4. As always, it is recommended to keep SPsas current as possible within those release versions.

The aforementioned recommendations in regards to release versions arelargely driven by the current state while looking ahead to plans fordelivery of new features. These recommendations take into account thepractical situation at customer sites regarding the effort involved inupgrading combined with the expected benefits. When SAP NetWeaver 7.4 SP5is delivered, significant value will be provided in the form of new featuresfor BW on SAP HANA, and thus upgrade will be advised at that time.
