The Liturgy of the Word for Sunday, November 3 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Times

Reading I: Wisdom 11: 22—12:2 God is merciful and He loves all His creatures. He gives them all a chance to repent after any wrongdoing they may have done out of this same merciful love.

Reading II: II Thessalonians 1: 11—2:2 God’s grace makes us worthy of the Father’s call. We are to be concerned about doing His work on earth much more than about guessing when He will come again at the end of time.

The Gospel: Luke 19: 1-10 The name Zaccheus means “clean.” Ironically, the crowd of onlookers at this scene think of Zaccheus as “unclean,” and thus they are shocked by what Jesus does. But here again is an instance of Our Lord searching out the lost to save them out of His great mercy.

Saint Mary’s Rosary Society Evening of Reflection

Monday, November 11, 2019 at 7pm in the School Cafeteria

St. Mary’s Rosary Society is privileged to have Father Sam Monaco of St. Anne Parish, Fair Lawn as its guest speaker on this night. Fr. Sam is no stranger to St. Mary’s (sharing his inspiring words at the recent St. Joseph Novena). We welcome all the women of the Parish to join us on this night. Light Refreshments will be served.

THANK YOU FROM ST. MARY’S ROSARY SOCIETY

Our “Yellow Brick Road” Tricky Tray fundraiser was a great success. But this would not have

been possible without a lot of hard work by many people.

Our Chair, Maureen Connor, is the main reason this event went off flawlessly. Her hard work

and attention to detail is amazing. Maureen handled the lion’s share of the work – selling the

tickets, wrapping the gifts, setting up the gift tables and calling the numbers. With her hard

working committee members, they solicited the gifts and donations and ran a well-coordinated

event. Thank you to all of the Rosarians and parishioners, who donated gifts, wrote the letters,

did the decorating, and provided the refreshments. Thank you to all the businesses that

donated gift certificates and gifts. Please be sure to support these restaurants and stores with

your business. Thank you to the wonderful men who sold the raffle tickets, did the running, and

counted and kept track of the ticket money. These men included Joe French, John Saar,

Joseph Mauro, Kevin Mauro, Bill Klecak, John Wlosek, Tony Castelli, and Fr. Jewel.

Thanks to the Priests and Staff of St. Mary’s for their support and help with printing the

program, set up and clean up and banking, especially Lois, Diane, Ole, Teddy, and Marita.

Thanks also to Peter Ferdinando for all of his hard work on the decorations he spent hours

making. And thanks to Michele Ferdinando for the wonderful table centerpieces.

Sincerely,

Linda Fagioli -- St. Mary’s Rosary Society

300 Club News The 300 Club raffle ticket sales have been brisk for the past 3 weeks. If you are planning on buying a ticket as a Christmas gift (for that difficult-to-buy-for person), think about buying one sooner rather than later. Tickets will be on sale after all Masses and available at the parish center Monday through Thursday. Good Luck!

Lord, for your faithful people life is changed, not ended.

Preface for Christian Death I wake up early, open my computer but go no further. The view through the window has taken hold of my attention. It’s not yet 7 a.m. but it is still dark. The rain shimmers as it passes between the streetlights and me. I walk to the window for a better look. When did all these leaves fall? I open the window. It is warmer than I expected. It is as if I am standing on the cusp of summer and fall. The church is also on the cusp of two seasons: Ordinary Time (the end of the current liturgical year) and Advent (the beginning of a new year). Today is the first of three Sundays that precede this transition - The Solemnity of Christ the King. The gospel for Christ the King reminds me of this dark morning. Jesus hangs on the cross and is taunted by the authorities, as well as, a criminal hanging next to him. They see him as just another dying leaf hanging from a tree limb - ready to fall and be swept away. Those with eyes of faith see something different. I am the true vine and my Father is the vine-grower. (John 15:1) During November the church directs our attention to those who have lived, died and returned to the vine-grower. Among these are the saints whose names are known by many like Saint Luke, the recorder of today’s gospel, and the newly canonized Saint John Henry Newman. There are also those whose names are less known but precious to each of us. They are our spouses, parents, grandparents, children, mentors and friends who have died. As we receive the Eucharist we are in communion with them through Jesus. During communion, we will pray the Litany of the Saints (#721). The response “pray for us” is an invocation to the saints for us, as well as, those souls who await entrance into the fullness of God’s kingdom. Blessed to be in ministry at St. Mary’s and honored to be part of the funeral liturgies for your loved ones over these past years.
