EXTENDEDDEADLINE!St.Mary’sParishChurch,Battersea,seekstoappointanOrganScholarfortheacademicyear2016-17,withthepotentialopportunitytocontinueforasecondyearbymutualagreement.TheOrganScholarreceivesanannualhonorariumof£2,000andgenerousextrafeesforweddings/funerals.MusicatSt.Mary’sMusicplaysanintegralroleinworshipatSt.Mary’s.ThechurchhasaveryableandenthusiasticrobedSATBchoir,supportedbyfourpaidChoralScholars(SATB),whichperformsmusiccoveringavastvarietyofmusicalstylesfromtheRenaissancetothepresentday.RecentperformancesincludeafullscaleproductionofMozart’sRequiemwithorchestrainwhichthe choral scholars took leading roles as soloists and the organ scholar had the opportunity toconducttheorchestrainperformance.TheScholarsandChoirofSt.Mary’shasalsoworkedwithrenowned composer Simon Bainbridge, premiering his work Psalm 23 written for an eveningcelebratingthenewlyrestored1stedition1611BibleatSt.Mary’s.Otherworksperformedrecentlyinclude:Finzi’sLo,thefull,finalsacrificeandVaughan-Williams’FiveMysticalSongs,movementsfrom Bach St. John Passion and Handel’sMessiahwith orchestra. The choir has also recentlyperformedDurufléandFauré’sRequiems.Theorganscholarhasasignificantroleinallmusicmakingaswellastheselargerservices/performances,withopportunitiestoconductensembles/orchestrasaswellasthechoir.Thechoiroftensingsforservices/concertsatSt.Mary’sandothervenuessuchasSouthwarkCathedralandExeterCollege,Oxford.TheChoirofSt.Mary’shavealsoperformedonBBC Radio London as part of the Royal Wedding celebrations in 2011 and included concertperformancesofnewlywrittenworksfromtheChoirbookfortheQueen.IntheSummerof2015,theOrganandChoralScholarsjoinedsomemembersofthechoironatriptoSéesandLeMans,FrancetosinginanorchestralperformancesofDelalande’sDeProfundis.

A typical Sunday Eucharist will contain avoluntarybeforeandafter theservice.Alongwith the hymns, the choir normally sing ananthem,amotet,apsalm (AnglicanchantorResponsorial),aswellasamasssettingwhichis usually congregational. Once per term theChoir of St. Mary’s performs a choral masssetting, such asMozart’s Spatzenmesse withinstrumental accompaniment. The firstSundayoftheMonthissupportedbytheFirstSunday Band and there is no expectation ofcommitmenttotheFirstSundayBandfortheanyofthescholars.

The2ndand4thEvensongsarefullchoralevensongswhichallowthechoirtoexploremorerepertoireincludinglargeeveningsettingssuchasStanfordinGandHowellsCollegiumRegale.Whenchoralevensongdoesnottakeplace,thereareshorteveningserviceswhichcontain2or3hymns.The church is a particularly beautifulGrade I listedGeorgian building on the banks of the riverThamesandisaninspiringplacetowork.Theorganisa1991SaxonAldred,twomanualtrackeractioninstrumentwith27speakingstops.Thereisalsoanew5’5”KawaiGrandPiano.TheOrganScholarisfreetousethechurchanditsinstrumentsfortheirownpractice;teachingandconcerts,etc.

TheRoleThepositionofOrganScholarinvolvesassistingtheDirectorofMusicinallmusicalaspectsoftheservicesandrehearsals.Therewillbemanyopportunitiesforplaying,conductingandcontributingtothegeneralrunningandorganisationofthemusicdepartment,whichwillincludesomeworkinmanaging the choir library. The scholarship can be designed to suit each candidate’s needs,focussingonconducting,playing,orabalanceofthetwo.TheOrganScholarmayalsosingwhennotplayingorconducting.ItmayalsobepossibletoarrangefundingfororganorconductinglessonsfortheOrganScholaraspartofthisscholarshipaswellasopportunityforsoloperformancesandmasterclassesthroughtheyear.Therearealsotworecitalseries,whichruneachyear,aswellaschoralconcerts.Scholarsareableperformatleasttwiceyearlyineachoftheseries.SeveralfestivalsoverthecourseoftheyeardonotfallonSundaysincludingAdventandChristmasservices,AshWednesday,HolyWeekservices,AscensionDay,etc.TheOrganScholarisexpectedtobeavailablefortheseserviceswiththeexceptionofMidnightMass/ChristmasDay.TypicalWeeklyTimetableWednesday 19:30-20:45 ChoirRehearsalSunday (EveryWeekexcept1stSundayofeachmonth)09:45-10:30 ChoirRehearsal11:00-12:15 MorningEucharist

This list is not intended tobe exhaustive and theOrgan Scholarmaybe asked toplay at otherservicesonoccasion.PersonSpecificationThe successful candidatewill likely be a current undergraduate/postgraduate student or recentgraduate, thoughthis isnota requirement.Thecandidateshouldbeofaverygoodstandard inorganplayingandexperienceofchoralconductingishighlydesirable.Asaguide,previousOrganScholarshaveeitheralreadyobtainedorhavebeenlookingtosoonachievetheARCOdiploma.Theprospectivecandidatewillalsobeexpectedtotakeanactiveroleinthelifeofthechurch.Theplaceofmusicwithinthechurchisnotexclusivetoservicesandpreviousscholarshavegivenrecitalsaspartoflocaleventsaswellaspartoftheirdegreeperformanceprojects.TheprospectiveOrganScholarshouldshowgoodinitiativeandhaveexcellentself-managementandorganisationalskills.ITskillswillbebeneficialbutarenotessential.SalaryandFeesThesalaryfortheorganscholar’spositionis£2,000perannum.TherearemanyweddingsandfuneralsthroughtheyearatSt.Mary’sandtheseattractanextrafeeof £100 (plus £25 music administration fee per service for music consultation meetings). Theperformancesfeeisdoubledforservicesthatarerecorded.TheDirectorofMusichasfirstrefusalfortheseextraservices.

• Playtwocontrastingpieceschosenbythecandidate:o OnebyJ.S.Bach;o Theotherwrittenafter1800.

• Play the final two verses of a hymn, provided on the day of audition, followed by animprovisation(suchasoftenrequiredaftertheOffertoryhymn);

• ScorereadashortextractofapieceforSATBvoices,(alsoprovidedataudition);• Playasightreadingtest;• ConductashortSATBanthem(sentatnotificationofshortlisting).TheDirectorofMusicwill

Wedohopeyouenjoyplayingthis1991SaxonAldredinstrument.A2manual,27stoporgan,itisextremely versatile and capable of most repertoire. Please take a moment to read over theinformationbelow.DivisionalandGeneralChannelAllocations:DivisionalchannelsareindicatedbygreennumbersonthecontrolpanelandGeneralChannelsareindicated by red. Channel 1 for both the General and Divisional pistons are set to a generalcrescendo.Pleasefeelfreetousethesebutdonotalterthem.General,Divisional,andSequencersettingsarelockedusingtherockerswitchesonthecontrolpanel.Adotunderthenumberindicatesthatthechannelislocked.Therestofthechannelsareallocatedasfollows:

1-4:DirectorofMusic(pleasedonotalter);5-8:OrganScholar(pleasedonotalter);9-16:VisitingOrganists(freeunlesslocked).
