From Father Zywan

A National Day of Remembrance This Monday, May 25 marks the annual celebration of Memorial Day. This day has been set aside to remember the brave and generous men and women who have served our nation in the armed services in times of war and conflict. They have paid the ultimate price for our freedom with their lives. Certainly, freedom is not free. It has come to us at a great price by those who have sacrificed greatly on our behalf. Unfortunately, we all too often take for granted what those who have gone before us, and those who currently serve in the military have accomplished or are doing on our behalf in defending the freedoms and rights we enjoy. Previously recognized as “Decoration Day,” this day was designated after the Civil War as a day to pay tribute to the fallen Confederate and Union solders by placing flowers on their graves. Thus, it was given the name “Decoration Day.” After World War I, this day was designated as a national holiday dedicated to remembering all those who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives and renamed Memorial Day. Be sure to remember in your prayers those members of your family and all who have laid down their lives in service to our nation. By their sacrifices, how richly blessed we truly are. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

UPDATE ON REOPENING CHURCHES, ON-SITE WORSHIP AND RETURN TO

PUBLIC MASSES As promised, we are providing this detailed update on the status of phasing in our church buildings' return to public worship. It is essential to understand that although we may receive PERMISSION to reinstitute a particular practice on a specific date, we must comply with all safety protocols before acting on that permission. The diocese has provided a 43-page report outlining those safety protocols, which include provisions for worship practices, attendance by congregants, sacramental practice, and workplace practices. Complying with those protocols will be extensive, time-consuming, expensive and burdensome, and will take some time to implement and communicate. We have begun the process and assure you that we are moving with speed to make our worship spaces and practices available as soon as possible and permitted. Understand that although no one is happy about the additional burdens and conditions that we face on our public worship, they are, as Bishop Zubik has written, a Pro-Life Issue. Compliance with these protocols is designed not only to protect the health of those in our faith community, but primarily to protect those not necessarily in our faith community, but those to whom we may come in contact. It is our Christian duty to avoid being the instruments of someone else's unnecessary illness or death, especially for those who are most vulnerable. With this in mind, we reluctantly must discourage anyone over 65, anyone who has been exposed within 14 days before a positive test COVID person, anyone who is feeling slightly ill and anyone with a compromised immuned system or may be susceptible to COVID. This would include pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and respiratory conditions such as COPD or asthma) from attending any public worship services, either by private prayer in our public spaces or, when resumed, from attending Mass. The obligation to attend Mass every week remains suspended, and we will continue to live-stream Masses for the foreseeable future. Returning to a more normalized worship practice within our holy spaces is essential to our obligation to provide spiritual nourishment to our members. However, these trying times require that we balance our love of God through the practice of our faith with our love of neighbor by not becoming avenues for sickness and death by helping to spread a potentially deadly disease. That balancing dictates that we DO reinstitute our public worship practice, but that we do so with prudence (the first cardinal virtue – (Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1804) in the safest reasonable way.

continued . . . This update is broken into four areas: 1. An explanation of the anticipated phase-in structure, with potential dates for each phase; 2. General Safety protocols applicable to all on-site Church activities for a.) Parish members; b.) Our parish administration and clergy; 3.Safety Protocols specific to Mass attendance a.) Generally and b.) Specific to the sacrament of the Eucharist; 4. Additional Sacramental and Worship Practices. 1. The Phase-in Structure The diocese has established a four-phase process to return to public worship. Phase 1 was the phase we just left, which involved the closure of churches and limited opportunity for participation in the sacraments (only live-stream Masses and outdoor confessions). Phase 2, our present status, allows us to open our buildings as long as we comply with the safety protocols, for private prayer and gatherings for weddings, baptisms and funerals up to 25 people, as long as CDC recommendations for social distancing and masking are followed. We made the St. Alexis church building available for private prayer from noon to 4:00 pm. Phase 3A, which we hope and anticipate will be permitted on June 1, will also allow a return of DAILY Masses, limited to 25 people, still following CDC guidelines. Phase 3B, which is anticipated to be by June 7, will allow a return to SUNDAY Masses, with an undetermined limitation on the number of congregants, (potentially as many as 1/3 church capacity or as few as 25 -50), at the discretion of State Authorities. Under all phases, the Sunday obligation remains suspended and live streaming of Mass will continue. 2. General Safety Protocols

The diocese mandates the following safety protocols

for all parishioners coming onto a Church site. -wash hands thoroughly before coming on-site -wear a face mask or face covering at all times -use hand sanitizers provided at the entrance of the

building when entering -use hand sanitizer provided at the exit of the

building when leaving -maintain 6 feet of social distancing between anyone

not a member of your household -refrain from physical contact with any other person

or any surfaces (“don’t touch”) as much as possible

-limit gatherings to no more than 25 persons -place any donations in the “no contact” donation

box -only one person at a time in the single designated

restroom (family restroom) -place all trash in single designated “no-touch” trash

receptacle

-do not use water fountains. It is permissible to bring your own water

-follow posted directions, abide by marked ingress and egress and seating instructions

The following safety protocols are prerequisites for

the Parish to exercise any permissions to re-open public worship.

-Create a COVID Safety Task Force comprised of

Staff, Medical Professionals and representatives of the parish greeters/ushers and liturgical ministers to determine HOW the Parish will comply with the safety protocols

-Create a COVID Safety Team comprised of staff or trained volunteers, who will be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) to clean, sanitize and disinfect spaces open to the public after every use. It will be done with CDC approved cleaning and sanitizing agents, to be obtained through pre-approved commercial vendors provided by the diocese.

-Due to the need to thoroughly clean, sanitize and disinfect every public space after every use, designate only one site for public use

-Designate only one entrance and one exit for the public space

-Designate ONLY ONE bathroom for public use -Mark off designated seating, entry and exit routes

and limited use space -Create a process to “roster” each person who enters

the space with contact information for purposes of contact tracing in the event someone tests positive for COVID who has utilized the space

-Train all ushers/greeters and liturgical ministers -Limit all public worship to 25 persons (possibly by

a pre-reservation system) -Secure and guard donation box -Create a method to screen attendees for masks and

apparent signs of illness -Create an exit process to ensure social distancing -Monitor parking lots to prevent outdoor gatherings on church property -Designate an isolated area for anyone who becomes ill to retire to. -Remove worship aids (hymnals, missals, etc.) provide for no-touch alternatives -Maximize ventilation in the building whenever worshippers are present by keeping all doors and windows open and utilizing highest settings on HVAC -Communicate with all parishioners regarding these requirements and ongoing spiritual opportunities, but do not use physical means such as bulletins or newsletters (no touch only, i.e. email, social media etc.)

continued . . . 3. Safety Protocols Specific to Mass Attendance The following protocols apply to all Masses at all times.

-Those over 65 and with pre-existing health conditions should not attend Mass -6 feet social distancing to be observed at all times -face masks must be worn at all times -attendance not to exceed designated limits

-Choirs are not be used. Music limited to organist and cantor ONLY

-Congregants are NOT TO SING; please enjoy the organist and cantor

-Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should be avoided unless absolutely necessary

-Younger adult ministers (Priests, deacons, altar servers, ministers) are to be preferred, but numbers kept to a minimum

-Outdoor Masses are discouraged due to difficulty of maintaining reverence and lack of amplification for attendees, who, if outdoor Mass is utilized, MUST remain in cars

-there will be no offertory procession -there will be no sign of peace -holy water fonts will remain dry -attendees must comply with all seating and floor

markings The following protocols are specific to the

Sacrament of the Eucharist at Mass -Mask will be removed by attendees immediately

before receiving - Eucharistic ministers must wear masks at all times -The precious blood will not be available to the

attendees -Communion on the tongue is discouraged -Communion will be distributed AFTER Mass, not

during. -One household group or individual will approach at

a time. -Immediately upon receipt of the Eucharist, each

attendee must leave the church, go to their car and leave the premises, do not gather in the parking lots.

-Each Eucharistic minister will stand beside a small table with an ablution dish and hand sanitizer and will purify and sanitize any time the minister senses contact with any attendee’s hand or mouth

-Those receiving in the hand should place their dominant hand under the other hand, extend their arms, make their palms perfectly flat, and HOLD STILL to receive, in order to avoid contact with the minister

-Those receiving on the tongue are to tilt their heads back, open their mouth, extend their tongue and HOLD STILL so that the minister may drop the host on your tongue and avoid contact. Because COVID virus potentially is in saliva particles on your breath, Communion on the tongue is discouraged.

-The Eucharist is not be administered by or to a gloved hand (NO GLOVES)

4. Additional Provisions

The 43-page document includes specific provisions for Anointing the Sick, Confessions, 1st Communions, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. If you have specific questions about these sacraments, please contact Deacon Jeff, who will be the liaison to the COVID Task Force. For now, confessions will continue to be heard each Saturday in Father Rodgers Hall (the old Saint Alexis Church Building) and adoration will continue to be available on Tuesday evenings from the parking lot of that same facility.

So, . . . this ain’t fun for any of us folks, and we know this is a lot to take in, but please bear with us as we do our best to move past this pandemic. We can and will return to a different but good, reverent and holy normal. In the meantime, be hopeful, be healthy, keep others healthy and most importantly, continue to strive for holiness. We love you all.

Making a Spiritual Communion

Without access to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is important to still keep the Lord’s Day holy! You can do this by intentionally praying the rosary, singing hymns or praise and worship songs, praying with Scripture, and making a spiritual communion, like the one below. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

FAITH FORMATION IN THE ERA OF COVID-19

The call to hand on the Faith to others is essential to our life as disciples of Jesus Christ. While the current pandemic has presented the Faith Formation program with some real challenges, technology and a willingness to try new approaches have made it possible for us to continue spreading the word of God in these difficult times. The cessation of our Monday and Wednesday evening classes presented the biggest challenge for us. However, our exceptional catechists truly rose to the occasion, customizing and emailing home lessons for their students and keeping track of their progress. At the same time, the parents and guardians did phenomenal work guiding their little ones to complete lessons at home. Since home instruction is not a normal part of the Monday and Wednesday programs, I’m all the more impressed and grateful for everyone’s flexibility and efforts. Learning at home is central to our Family-based Catechesis program. Ordinarily, parents and guardians in this program would receive instruction on the various doctrines and practices of our Faith at monthly meetings, which in turn they would disseminate to their children at home through various activities and lessons.

Through livestream technology, we were able to conduct our final two parent meetings for the year. Teaching an online faith class to about 40 individuals can seem like a daunting task. The virtual format took some getting used to and there were a few glitches to iron out, but in the end it proved to be a tremendous blessing to us. This same technology has assisted us in RCIA and RCIC as well. I want to make special mention of Maya Evans and Peyton Marston, our two RCIC students. These extraordinary young people, whose faith formation was interrupted for a time, recently expressed their desire to resume learning the Faith, and so have been joining me for virtual classes for more than a month now to help them get caught up and ready to receive Confirmation in the fall. We are prayerfully looking forward to the day the restrictions are lifted and we are able to return to Sunday Mass. Perhaps one of the blessings in the midst of this crisis will be an increased love and appreciation for being able to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. In the interim, though, God in His goodness has provided us with the means to continue teaching and learning our Holy Catholic Faith.

PRAYER FOR VETERANS

God of mercy we ask for blessings on all those who have served their country

in the armed forces. We ask for healing for the veterans

who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe.

We pray especially for the young men and women, in the thousands, who are coming home

from Iraq and Afghanistan with injured bodies and traumatized spirits.

Bring solace to them, O Lord. May we pray for them when they cannot pray.

Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam,

and peace to the regions they fought in. Bless all the soldiers who served

in non-combative posts. May their calling to serve

continue in their lives in many positive ways. Give us all here present today creative vision

and so moves beyond war. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
