• Form• Samsung Galaxy S3 - 136.6x70.6x8.6mm, 133g

HTC One X+ - 134.4x69.9x8.9mm, 135g• Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is an attractive looking phone with its neatly curved

shape, evenly spaced bezel round the screen and metallic trim throughout.

• However, although Galaxy S3’s do tend to be reasonably durable in use, the feel of the materials doesn’t exactly instil confidence or indeed any kind of positive vibes you might get from a more premium finish.

• Considering it’s an expensive flagship model this is a real let-down as you’d rightly expect something which feels like that money has been invested in something crafted out of high-grade components.

• Despite the tacky plastic it doesn’t feel like a flimsy handset as there aren’t any creaks or areas where the bodywork gives. It’s solidly put together.

Page 9: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• The HTC One X+, like its stable mates which came before, manages to tick both important boxes as it uses exactly the same body shell as the original One X.

• It has an aesthetically pleasing design with similarly elegant curves and a contoured panel inserted into the front which houses the touch display and projects slightly from the main shell.

• It’s also made of a high-quality polycarbonate with a matte finish which feels great to hold. A downside is that it only comes in black, which is a shame as the white version of the original One X looked very striking.

• We’ll give HTC this round but are hopeful that other colour options will become available in the future.

• Winner – HTC One X+

Display

Page 11: S3 vs htc 0ne x

The Galaxy S3 sports a sizeable 4.8-inch Super AMOLED capacitive multitouch display with a 1280x720 pixel resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and a pixel density of 306 pixels-per-inch (ppi). This is a truly excellent display: brightness, colours, contrast and overall picture and text quality are fantastic. But, the One X+’s touchscreen is no slouch either. It’s the same kit as the One X, which means a 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD2 capacitive display with a 1280x720 pixel resolution and the same Corning Gorilla Glass 2 reinforcement as its opponent. The pixel density is slightly higher than its rival at 312ppi and although this means you get high quality visuals it isn’t going to make a noticeable difference from the Galaxy S3.Both touch displays are top-notch. This one’s a draw.Winner - Draw

Storage

Page 13: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• Samsung has gone with the full set of internal storage options, you can get 16GB or 32GB of onboard memory and there’s also a 64GB variant (although it hasn’t actually been released at time of writing).

• All models also come with a MicroSD slot for cards up to 32GB and high capacity (SDHC) up to 64GB.

• HTC offers 32GB and 64GB variants of the One X+ but there’s no MicroSD slot to be found.

• Samsung takes this round.• Winner – Samsung Galaxy S3

Processor

Page 15: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• The Galaxy S3 uses a quad core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.4GHz on Samsung’s Exynos 4412 chip, which includes 1GB of dual-channel RAM, fast 32 nanometre (nm) semiconductor technology and a quad core Mali-400MP graphics processing unit (GPU).

• Excellent responsiveness and virtually zero lag when navigating and multitasking.

• Gaming and HD video also perform well thanks to that quad core GPU.

• The main difference between the One X+ and its predecessor is the tweak to the processor technology. It’s still Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core based, although this time it runs the AP37 version of the chip clocked at 1.7GHz.

• It’s effectively a turbo-charged variant but it still runs with 40nm semiconductors, single-channel RAM (1GB) and a ULP GeForce GPU.

Page 16: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• For more general interaction, here’s an excerpt from our hands-on first-look: ‘Performance was exemplary, with the camera application opening and firing in rapid succession, and there was zero lag present whilst whizzing around HTC’s Sense UI.’

• So it’ll give a good Android experience and will probably keep up with the Samsung.

• It’s worth pointing out, however, that the Tegra 3 chip is known to run a little hot, which can affect performance over longer periods of use.

• It’s a risk you run with quad core tech, although lower rated nanometre semiconductors, such as Samsung’s, do go some way to alleviating this.

• Winner – Samgsung galaxy S3

Operating System

Page 18: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• The Galaxy S3 shipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Samsung’s TouchWiz interface but it’s currently in the process of being updated to 4.1 Jelly Bean.

• Unlike the original One X, HTC’s One X+ comes with Jelly Bean preinstalled and with HTC Sense version 4+, a new build with some extra tweaks.

• Broadly speaking then, both devices will be offering a very similar experience with Jelly Bean’s improved performance, stability and enhanced navigation thanks to the Butter UI.

• However, the interfaces will look quite different and although both will add things like settings menu toggles to the notifications menu they’ll do so in slightly different ways.

• The Galaxy S3 also comes with Samsung’s own app suite, including things like S-Note and S-Planner, while the One X+ has specialised music and photo apps, plus the ability to take photos from the lock screen.

Camera

Page 20: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• The One X+’s camera setup is mostly the same as the One X’s, which means an 8-megapixel back-illuminated sensor (BSI) with LED flash, a dedicated imaging chip, rapid multishot and simultaneous 1080p HD video and still image capture.

• Other features include touch focus, autofocus, face and smile detection and f/2.0 aperture, video stabilisation and HDR mode.

• However, one key difference over its predecessor is the upgrade to the secondary camera, it’s now 1.6-megapixels instead of 1.3, though it still captures 720p video and can conduct video calls.

• Sense 4+ also adds a special ‘vanity’ filter for mug-shots.

Page 21: S3 vs htc 0ne x

• Samsung has a pretty similar setup in terms of features and functionality, the Galaxy S3 has an 8-megapixel BSI primary with simultaneous 1080 HD video and image capture along with multishot.

• Here you’ve got touch focus, autofocus, face and smile detection, digital image and video stabilisation and HDR mode.

• The aperture isn’t quite as good as HTC's being an f/2.6 model.

• It also has a 2-megapixel secondary with 720p video capture and video calling.

• We’d say this one pretty much balances out to a draw.• Winner - Draw
