Ice Cream in a BagWhat You Need

• 1 tablespoon Sugar • 1/2 cup Milk or half & half

• 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla • 6 tablespoons Rock salt

• 1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag • 1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag

• Ice cubes  How To Make It1. Fill the large bag half full of ice and add the rock salt. Seal the bag. 2. Put milk, vanilla and sugar into the small bag and seal it. 3. Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully. 4. Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes. 5. Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!

July Is National Ice Cream MonthIn 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by over 90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. About 10.3 percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation’s dairy industry.

Summer’s Best Hydrating Foods Hot summers. Sticky humidity. Water doesn’t quench everything. There are other great healthy options when it comes to staying hydrated during the hot Houston summer months: fresh fruits and vegetables! Choose one or a few of these hydrating summer foods and prepare a decadent salad, smoothie or raw food entrée that will feed your body and your spirit!• Cucumbers - Cucumbers taste great raw, sliced thin, are made of mostly water and are one of the best foods to hydrate the body. You can even float them in your water for a unique, refreshing drink. • Watermelon - Again, this fruit is mostly water and contain essential hydrating salts, calcium, magnesium and potassium. • Cabbage - Cabbage has tons of Vitamin C and is packed with fiber. This summer vegetable is rich in natural probiotics, which help to keep the digestive system working efficiently. • Lettuce - Most lettuces are about 90% water. Be sure to choose the leafy green variety. • Tomatoes - Sliced, wedges or even simply cut in half, tomatoes are refreshing and also very healthy. • Berries - Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are at their peak during the summer. These super fruits are chock full of antioxidants and Vitamin C and are great for detoxing the entire body. • Figs - These summer beauties taste so indulgent. Make a fig chutney, with some medijool dates and enjoy it on whole grain crackers as a potassium and fiber filled treat. • Cherries - Cherries have more antioxidants and Vitamin C than almost any food on the planet. • Grapes - These hydrating balls of goodness are known for their extremely high content of Resveratrol, a substance that acts as an antioxidant and is heart-friendly. • Carrots - Carrots are almost all water. Summer offers some the tastiest carrots, surprisingly grown in more colors than just orange, such as yellow and green. Carrots are natural sources of beta-carotene. Recipes & Gardening Tips

Garden Tips For July

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out.• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week.• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production.• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them.• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia.• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

Simple Creme BruleeYou could make this on National Crème Brulee Day July 27th!

INGREDIENTS:3 tablespoons white sugar1 cup heavy cream3 egg yolks1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract2 tablespoons white sugar, divided

DIRECTIONS:Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Whisk 3 tablespoons sugar and cream in a microwave-safe bowl until well combined; heat the mixture in microwave until warm, 1 to 2 minutes and whisk again to dissolve sugar. Whisk in egg yolks and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour cream mixture into 2 ramekins. Set ramekins into a roasting pan and pour in enough hot water to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake in the preheated oven until creme desserts are set but still slightly jiggly when shaken, about 50 minutes. Remove ramekins from hot water and chill in refrigerator until cold, at least 2 hours. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly over the top of each dessert. Use a kitchen torch to lightly toast and melt the sugar topping until brown and bubbly, about 30 seconds. Let the sugar topping cool before serving. To serve, use a spoon to crack the crisp sugar open to reveal the creamy dessert underneath. Source: http://allrecipes.com/
