Alexandra Page, MD Women who choose orthopaedics share an uncommon bond. Celebrating, promoting, and advancing our pro- fessional identity while supporting the other aspects of our lives defines RJOS. Reminiscing on my first meeting in the early 1990’s, the only significant difference over 25 years was that we enjoyed lunch rather than our current dinner. I sat with a group of women who shared my orthopaedic interest, eager to share their stories and hear mine. Over the decades, the central role of RJOS as forum for us, the female minority, con- tinues. However, we have evolved to offer more value. Over my year as president, I hope to increase the value of your RJOS membership as well as build our society by demonstrating what RJOS can bring to prospective members and to other supporting partners. For the society, my goals this year include: • Enhance the mentoring program. Grow- ing women in orthopaedics requires developing the pipeline. We hope to roll out an online mentoring match in the next few months. • Aggressively expand membership be- yond women in orthopaedics, notably our male colleagues and department chairs/ program directors. • Broaden research and traveling fellow- ship opportunities support and career development. • Strengthen RJOS financial status. Pro- viding programs requires funding and overhead. However, a subsidized dues structure which encourages medical student and resident members limits revenue. Currently, we are operating in the ‘red’ and have been for a few years. The budgeted loss this year is $26,000, which is a deficit. Our mission is to promote the professional development of and for women in orthopaedics throughout all stages of their careers. We focus on professional development, mentorship, research, and organizational excellence. We offer multiple scholarships for medical students and residents to attend the RJOS and AAOS annual meetings. RJOS also supports academic traveling fellowships, and funds multiple clinical and basic science grants.
