The safety and well-being of all our pupils at Rossall School is our highest priority. Our business is to know everyone as an individual and to provide a secure and caring environment, so that every pupil can learn in safety. We expect respect, good manners and fair play to be shown by everyone so that every pupil can develop his/her full potential and feel positive about him/herself as an individual. All pupils should care for and support each other.

Rossall prides itself on its culture of open and effective communication between staff and pupils.

Our aims are to:a) create an environment in our School which is safe and secure for all pupilsb) encourage our pupils to establish satisfying relationships with their families, with peers and with other adultsc) encourage children to develop a sense of autonomy and independenced) work with parents to build their understanding of and commitment to the welfare of all pupils.

Who to turn to:All pupils know that there are adults to whom they can turn to if they are worried, including Houseparents, the Designated Senior Lead (Mr Pryor and Mrs Lee), the Head, Deputy Head, Senior Teachers, Chaplain and the Medical Staff.

All pupils have access to a telephone helpline, enabling them to call for support in private.

Every child is given a care card which contains guidance on where to turn for advice, including confidential help lines and web addresses for external specialists.

Our notice boards around school, the Medical Centre and all Houses display advice on where pupils can seek help, e.g. Child Line and External Listener.

Forms of Child Abuse:Child abuse can be of a sexual, emotional or physical nature, it can also be the result of neglect.

Concerns or suspicions may arise through either direct allegation, direct observation or by changes in attitude or behaviour. All members of the teaching and support staff receive Safeguarding training on an annual basis.

LAST WORD

Last word….

Rossall Hockey or RossHockey is a unique form of hockey played only at Rossall and is played on the beach during the Lent term. It dates back to the 19th century and started as a derivation of Rossall Rugby Football, when pitches were too wet. It is thought to be an adaptation of the Eton field game introduced to the school in 1857 by a school master who had been a student at Eton College. It is one of the few school coded sports to have remained in use despite the dominance of other national codes in modern sport. The only other examples of school coded sport that remain are those of the various Fives codes; of which Rossall has its own, as well as Harrow football, Winchester College football, the Eton wall game and the Eton field game.

The beach game is played with hockey-like sticks by all senior pupils at the school. Initially the rules of RossHockey were slightly different from those of today, with scoring occurring by a system of goals and rougeable. It is also known that there were no restrictions on the number of players in a game and there was no fixed time of play - indeed one game lasted for two days.

The official rules were drawn up in 1873 and two years later the first House RossHockey competition took place. The rules were amended again in 1900 to abolish rougeables. Emphasis has always been placed on the game being one of skill and dribbling - as well as one of brute force.

In 1997 the game was nearly abandoned after over 130 years of history when the supplier of the sticks went bankrupt. Fortunately after an appeal was made in the press and on television, a replacement supplier was found in Eccles where they had made lacrosse sticks for many years. The new sticks are slightly less ornate than the traditional ones and also made of hickory rather than ash but the game play has not been affected.
