Parent Parking Please do not use the Admin car park at the front of the school to drop off or pick up your children. We have noced that some parents are coming into the car park and parking their car where there is no designated bay, blocking cars that are parked in bays. This is an unsafe pracce, and if cars need to leave the car park urgently it can be difficult to locate the offending driver. We do not allow students to walk through this car park so please support us by not parking your car there. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers, Our Pre-Primary students have nearly completed the On-Entry Assessment which is a requirement of the Department of Education. At the completion of the testing, we will be sending home reports to parents indicating their child’s performance. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please make an appointment to see their teacher.

Congratulations to the Lyle family who were the inaugural winners of the ‘Privileged Parent Parking’ (PPP) bay for Term 1. If you would like to be in the draw to win the bay for Term 2, all you need to do is volunteer half an hour in the school over the remainder of this term, see Emma or Claire in the front office and they will put your name on a raffle ticket. You can also pay your voluntary contributions for the term $15 per child, or for the whole year, and you will get a raffle ticket for each term that you have paid. The draw will take place on the last Friday of Term 1 and the winner will be contacted. You will then have PPP for Term 2. Good luck!

Just a reminder that this Monday, 6th March, is the Labour Day public holiday. We hope you enjoy a lovely long weekend with your family.

Parent Parking Please do not use the Admin car park at the front of the school to drop off or pick up your children. We have noticed that some parents are coming into the car park and parking their car where there is no designated bay, blocking cars that are parked in bays. This is an unsafe practice, and if cars need to leave the car park urgently it can be difficult to locate the offending driver. We do not allow students to walk through this car park so please support us by not parking your car there.

Swimming Lessons In-term swimming lessons commence in Week 9, Monday 27th March for all students in Pre-Primary to Year 6 at the Aquatic Centre. Forms will be going home this week and need to be returned by the 15th March. Swimming lessons are an integral component of our Physical Education program as it is a vital skill to be able to swim confidently and competently. It is expected that all students will participate unless a child has a medical certificate or significant health reasons outlined in a letter from parents.

Being safe to and from school Many of our children walk or ride to and from school. At the start of every year, it is important to remind your children how they should keep themselves safe. Here are a few guidelines you can discuss with your children:

always travel in a group

walk on the right hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic

wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway

stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres)

be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably

if you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number

if a passing car stops nearby, never get too close

run from a situation if you feel at risk report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school and the police

if you can get it safely, try to photograph or remember the number plate of the car

Please remember to create a CareMonkey profile for your child/ren. Detailed information was provided in the last newsletter. If you have any problems or queries please do not hesitate to contact Emma Kime in the office 9527 1802.

Information Meeting with Staff from Rockingham Senior High School Parents/Carers of year 5 and 6 students are invited to attend a short meeting with representatives from Rockingham Senior High School on Tuesday, 14th March at 8:30am in our undercover area. Year 6 students will bring home enrolment packages for Rockingham High School, please complete if your child is attending RSHS in 2018.

Punctuality Students are reminded that they need to be at school by 8:15am when classes will be open for them to get organised and complete their morning activities. We have many students arriving after 8:45am which means they miss the important first fifteen minutes of the school day where teachers preview the day’s lessons and begin teaching. Being punctual is a very important life skill so the earlier children can develop the habit of being on time the better. If students do arrive after 8:40am, they must get a ‘Late Note’ from the office before going to class. We will be contacting parents if students are regularly late to school.

Rotary Club of Rockingham 2017 Calendar Our school has formed a valuable partnership with the Rotary Club of Rockingham. They are committed to supporting our school in whatever way they can. Each year, the Rotary Club produce a wall calendar with photographs of various locations around the Rockingham area. It is a beautiful calendar highlighting the amazing landscapes of our area. They have kindly offered to donate all proceeds to our school. Calendars are $5 each and available in our front office. Thank you for your support.

P&C Committee Thank you to parents who attended last week’s AGM and General Meeting. Your P&C Office Bearers for 2017 are:

President: Cassie Cugley Vice President: Renae Owens Secretary: Jessi Glauser Treasurer: Luke Spiers & volunteer Bookkeeper? Fundraising Coordinator: Sarah Rogers Committee: Sian Jones, Tegan Jeakes, Luke Spiers Canteen Co-ordinator: Donna Busk Committee: Sandra, Kerry White Uniform Co-ordinator: Renae Owens

A huge thank you to all those parents who volunteered to help out on the various committees. You are vital to our school and we appreciate your willingness to volunteer your precious time. It would be fantastic to see more of our parents, including new families to the school, attend the meetings as we need your feedback and input to continue to ‘Aspire and Achieve Together’.

The next P&C meeting will be at 6pm on Monday 20th March in the staffroom. We look forward to seeing you there!

Attendance Our attendance rate for the first four weeks of term was 94.7%. Withdrawing students during the school term to take a family holiday is considered an unacceptable reason for a child’s absence as per Department of Education policy. Requests need to be discussed with the Principal prior to extended absences.

Kind regards, Jacqui O’Donnell Principal

MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS

During peak office hours it is sometimes very difficult for office staff to deliver personal messages to students. If you

have a message for your child please call the office by 2pm. It would also be helpful if you could organise a pick up

location with your child in the morning so that they know where to wait for you after school. Please advise your child

that if you are not at the pre- arranged pick-up location to come to the office and we will try to make contact with you.

Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

A note from the Chaplain: Here is some great info from http://raisingchildren.net.au a fabulous resource! Healthy screen time for your child. Screens are a part of life for most children aged 6-11 years.

If you’re thinking about whether your child should watch YouTube or play on a tablet, here’s a key question to ask: is this program, video or app good quality? Good-quality media can support your child’s learning, especially if it ties in with his interests, sparks his imagination or ties into something he’s learning at school.

For example, a seven-year-old can get a lot out of spending 30 minutes creating an animation on a screen. This develops her problem-solving skills as she maps out the events in the story line. It’s much better than if she spends 30 minutes watching online animations that advertise and sell toys.

PRIVILEGED PARENT PARKING Congratulations to the Lyle family who were the lucky winners of our Privileged Parent Parking bay! The next draw will take place on the last Friday of Term 1. If you want to be in the draw you need to pay your Voluntary Contributions by 6 April 2017 or volunteer half and hour or more of your time to the school.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

When dropping your children off at Helping Hands before school early in the morning please use the Kiss and Drop Zone and not the teacher parking bays. To ensure extra safety for our after school care children the school gates will be closed at 3pm. For your convenience please use the Administration car park when collecting your child after this time.
