Its 4th of July weekend and Ibet you thought I was going todeclare summer over. I actu-ally did that around Easter this

year. Summer ends earlierevery year because every yeartheres so much to do. Thereslogic in there somewhere.

Anyway, it s 4th of July week-end and Im reminded howmuch America is like family:maddening, crazy, amazing, and necessary. Add your ownadjective, chances are itll fit.

For those of you who dontknow how you could possi-bly be related to that brotheror sister, aunt or uncle, whodrives you nuts I feel thesame way about some of ourfellow Americans. I suspectsome of you like your family

just fine but you dont want tolive next door to them. A lot

of people feel the same wayabout a lot of people. Thats

    America.Fireworks are great on the

4th of July but I dont feel so

patriotic about people who setthem off past midnight in themiddle of the week. Who arethese knuckleheads? Theyrenot even the kind of fireworksthat look good. Theyre justthe big boom type. I gotta askagain who are these knuck-leheads? But theyre family.Theyre Americans, right?

I remember watching a40-year-old man setting off amat of recrackers in the street.I think thats like 4000 recrack-ers. I wonder if he was thinkingabout Tomas Jefferson andBen Franklin. Is this guy cele-brating the birth of the UnitedStates or is he just a moron ofmonumental proportions?

Which, of course, remindsme of a George Carlin quote.Think about how dumb theaverage American is, then re-

alize that half of them are stu-pider than that.

Which, of course remindsme how much I like quota-ble quotes though no one

seems to say anything an-ymore. Pretty much all ofthe good stuff has been saidalready by, or at least attrib-uted to, Yogi Berra, MarkTwain, Winston Churchill, and Bugs Bunny. But I didcome across a few goodiesfrom others that seem timely

    with The Fourth.Stephen Colbert suggested

America should steer clear offoreign affairs. If our Found-ing Fathers wanted us t o careabout the rest of the world, they wouldnt have declaredtheir independence from it.

Newsman Dan Rather hasfound himself in controver-sy from time to time but not

when he said: Americans willput up with anything provid-ed it doesnt block traffic.

    George Carlin was no doubt

thinking about average Amer-icans when he said: In Ameri-ca, anyone can become Presi-dent. Thats the problem.

    Lily Tomlin kinda zeroed in

on the same problem: Ninety-eight percent of the people inthis country are decent, hard-

working, honest people. Itsthe lousy other two percentthat get all the publicity. Butthen, we elected them.

Its kind of easy to findzingers about America be-cause sometimes we canbe a big oaf. Like the guysaid, America will always dothe right thing after tryingeverything else but we do getthere.

So on this birthday weekendof the United States of Amer-ica its time to rememberanother quote from a famousbillionaire: For 240 years it'sbeen a terrible mistake to betagainst America, and now isno time to start. Warren Buf-fett

    Happy 4th

We knew this one (at leastwe knew the urban myth) andgured it would one day end

up in Sean McVeighs Facts YouProbably Dont Need column but

why wait. A reader (Max Haot)sent us a note asking if we knewtheagpole at Riis Park (Bay 9) wasperfectly aligned with the EmpireState Building and he sent Googleimages to back up the claim.

    *****Te Marine Parkway Bridge

was closed at 11 p.m. lastTursday to the surprise andanger of many. Flashing

    warnings were alerting drivers

all week before and the MTA/Bridges and Tunnels had issuedpress releases saying the bridge

would be closed at midnight.midnight. On Tursday, theMTA sent out an email saying thebridge would be closed at 11 p.m.instead. Tat email did not getin our paper (which was alreadyout for delivery) or circulate all

that much. Drivers hustlinghome before the midnight cutoff

were understandably outragedby the early closure, which alsocame with no explanation.

    *****Yay. Te boardwalk from

Beach 117th to Beach 126thwill open on Friday so we will

have a continuous boardwalkfrom Beach 9th to Beach 126th.

We haven't been able to saythat in almost four years! We'llpost a video on Facebook ofthe new stretch as soon as wecan. We gotta say it again: Teboardwalk's back!

*****Phil Goldfeder has his next job

lined up. The NY Assemblymanwill become head of Yeshiva Uni-versity's Government Relations.

*****Reminder: Friday, July 1 is the

annual RIBS golf outing at RiisPark. Reminder 2: Mass On TeBeach is Sunday, July 3 at Beach129th at 9 .m.

    *****We greatly appreciate all letters

and emails we get (send to [email protected] or editor@

    *****Many people have been asking

about Ryan Whelan who wasinjured in a basketball gamerecently. He underwent surgeryand is now working hard inphysical therapy. We and so manyothers wish him a speedy recovery.

    *****Tanks for all the birthday

wishes. Te Rockaway Timesturned two last week. GinnyPaden said:Tanks for the news, fun, and Rockaway Spirit. Tat

    might be our new slogan!*****

Ryan Woerners top basketballplayer list ruffled some feathersbut he did say his list was fromRockaway Beach west. Whathe didnt say is why he left KarlButigian off the list! Tis week,Ryan proles super runner KerriGallagher.

*****Not sure what to call them

other than sand puddles. With the boardwalk nowconcrete sand cant seep or fallthrough cracks and some of itaccumulates in large patches(sand puddles). Biking can behazardous through these little

    dunes.*****

Congressman Greg Meekswas victorious in the Democraticprimary on Tuesday. He beat AliMirza, a businessman from Elmont.

    *****Senator Chuck Schumer came

to Rockaway last week urgingthe Army Corps to get movingon releasing its ReformulationStudy which addresses all kindsofood protection. Tere wasntmuch news to his visit but he did

    some urging.*****

    BREXIT ? WHAT ABOUT ROCKAWEXIT?

    By Lou Pastina

If you havent noticed recentlythe Brits, the bad guys in the playHamilton, and more recently ourbest friends, decided to exit theEuropean Union. Great Britain,a true democracy, put the vote tothe people: and 52 percent vot-ed to leave. Majority wins! Unlikethe United States, which is a rep-resentative democracy, meaningthat we vote for people who votefor us. Remember Al Gore win-ning the popular vote but GeorgeBush winning the Electoral Col-lege? Big difference! Not that I wasupset back then, I voted for Bushand still believe he kept us safe.

It seems the Brits were fed upwith being overrun by immi-grants. Guess they haventguredout those folks coming to theirisland are not immigrants just

former colonized citizens fromtheir former Empire. I personallyhave heard cabbies driving thoseiconic black cabs moaning thatno one is from England anymore.Of course, they were telling that tosomeone who had just arrived in

their country. Gogure!Tey also were fed up with their

legislators, or MPs in Parliament, being overruled by the EU inBrussels. Cant say that I blamethem on that point. Interesting-ly enough the folks in Scotland,Northern Ireland all voted tostay in the Union, while Englandproper did not. Te young votedoverwhelming to stay, while theolder folks wanted out.Te youngrealized that it was to their bene-t to be able to go to any country

with a EU passport to nd work.Te older set had a romanticized

vision of the sun never setting onthe British Empire.

Certainly impacts the rest ofEurope, for sure. Teir reaction

was swift: Dont let the door hityou on the way out, Te Greekswere going to do the same backin 2008, but they really needed

those loans from the EU to opentheir ATMs back up, and to keepthe tourism alive.

Definitely impacts Ireland whowill remain a EU country. But theirrelationship with Northern Irelandcould be impacted, since they are

no longer all part of the EU andnow will be considered differentcountries: one in the EU and onenot. Scotland and Wales will prob-ably look to separate again. In fact,I believe they are running Brave-heart videos 24x7 there now.

Trump thinks this proves whathe has been saying all along. Keepthe immigrants out; make Amer-ica great again; blah, blah, blah.Hillary didnt see the vote goingthat way at all. But we do needBritain, and we need a strongEurope.Tey say it will take two

years to gure out the divorceproceedings. Guess well see.

But maybe the Brits are on tosomething here. I mean thinkabout, Staten Island has beentrying to secede from New Yorkfor decades. Maybe Rockawayshould think of exiting Queensmaybe even New York. We could

hook-up with Britain! Tey arelosing all their colonies again;maybe they would like to securea foothold in the New World? Igure they got the message aboutno taxation without representa-tion, someone from there must

have seen Hamilton?Just think about the boardwalk.

Te federal government award-ed about $450 million, yet it onlycost about $200 million to do theboardwalk. Where did the othermoney go? Hello City Hall! Yeah,I know you are probably saying

we need remen, policemen, and sanitation men: but, we havea large number of those peoplealready living here; now they can

work here too!We would need our own may-

or. Someone could run on a plat-form of keeping the hipsters out.Maybe we can get Trump to builda wall.Tis way we could be likeBritain: ercely independent, proud of our islands heritage, keeping Britain for the British andRockaway for the Rockawayites!

On second thought, lets keepthose bridges open!

That's right friends. Thisis one of those rare, once ina lifetime events that CAN-NOT be missed. It may notmake as much sense to youas it does to me, but let mefill you in. Yes, a semi-proboxing match excites me.However, the draw of thisevent lies in the GrudgeMatches of the Undercard.Legendary FDNY boxingcoach Bobby McGuire hascalled on some of Rock-away's favorite sons. Inthe name of charity andgood will, Bobby has askedChef and FDNY heartthrobMike "The Pressure Cook-er" Egan, Pete "The Heat"Hayden, Marty "The Hand-some Hitter" Tubridy and"Jabbing" JoJo O'Grady tolace up the gloves. True

to their charitable nature, these sons are bravely ris-ing to the occasion.

Let's examine the tale ofthe tape. While Chef Mike"The Pressure Cooker"Egan makes a living eatingsmoke, and occasionallysmokes delicious ribs, he

puts down his "ov" glovesfor a pair of 12 ounce box-ing gloves. The weight ofhis gloves should not bean issue as he has kepta strict training regimenof 12-ounce curls for thelast 25 years. He is wide-ly known for his boyishcharm, deafening whistle, and mild temperament. But I have no doubt, he willmake a worthy opponent tofellow fire buff Pete "TheHeat" Hayden.

    Hoop MemoriesDear Editor:

As someone who spent thefirst 25 years or so of my life, playing on the small, sandy,

windswept basketball courtsof Rockaway, I would like tocommend Ryan Woerner'scolumns about the best WestEnd players. While waitingfor his last installment of thetop 3 players, I was ready topounce on any mistakes, butI believe he got them right. There can be no arguing withDick McGuire's Hall of Famecareer. I was a contempo-rary of Nancy Lieberman'sSt. Francis DeSales CYO teamand they probably could have

beaten the USA Olympic teamof that era and of course theGREAT Brian Winters.

Having grown up on thelegendary basketball blockof Beach 119th street, wehad TWO NBA players fromour block when I was a kid.Everyone knows about Bri-

an Winters, but we also hadthe former Bishop Loughlinstar, member of the AcadiaCollege Sports Hall of Fame,

All Canada College Basket-ball Team and member ofthe 1969 Baltimore Bullets,Brian Heaney! Of course anydiscussion of great Rocka-

way basketball players (notwes t enders) should includea pair of former Far RockawayH.S. and St. John's basketballgreats. Melvin Utley playedfor the Indiana Pacers andthe Cleveland Cavaliers andJohnny Warren who playedon the greatest NYC basket-ball team of all time, the 1969NBA Champions, N.Y. Knick-erbockers.

Every neighborhood has abasketball legend who didn'tgo onto the NBA. Many peo-

ple have heard of NBA greatKarl "The Mailman" Malone.

Well, years before Karl Malo neplayed in the NBA, Rockawayhad the first basketball post-al legend, the mythical Jimmy"The Mailman" Walsh, whohas since moved on to coach-ing young Rockaway ballers

for the last couple of decades. In my grammar school days,

the Winters backyard was theonly basketball court betweenB. 109 Street & B. 129. Aroundthe time I was in the 7thgrade, there were about an-other ten basketball-crazed

youngsters on the block andthe Winters backyard was ourhangout. One Saturday morn-ing we all decided to meetin Winters backyard at 7:00a.m.and play some hoops. Weall showed up at 7:00 a.m. yell-ing, screaming, playing someball and having a good oldtime. The second floor win-dow comes up, Mrs. Winter'shead comes out of the win-dow and she asks us politely"Boys could you please comeback at 9:00 a.m.?" My favoriteRockaway basketball memory

will alw ays be of my mother atall the games, screaming "De-fense, keep your hands up"and yelling at the refs. Rock-away basketball, the way itshould be!

Dear Editor:When I began to plan my

But rumors and rumblingsaround the peninsula haveit that Hayden's trainingcamp consists of a repe-titious chipping and put-ting regimen. Word has it,

"The Heat" is passing onhis knowledge of this new

wo rk ou t ser vin g ic e co ldbeers at the 19th Hole ofThe Rockaway Beach GolfClub. Hayden comes intothis match with a nearlyflawless record in the Rock-away Beach After Hours Di-

His light-ning quick speed has himat even odds with his child-hood friend Egan accord-ing to Las Vegas odds mak-ers. Local Celebrity BertFriedman sees Hayden asa 2-1 favorite in the SuperMiddleweight Division.

    "Jabbing" JoJo O'Grady

proudly reps NY Strongest,DSNY and Belle Harbor'sstaple Jameson's Pub. In abold move, and after ask-ing three unnamed men, hechallenged his opponent,Marty "The Handsome Hit-ter" Tubridy to a test ofmanhood. The challenge

wa s qui ck ly ac ce pt ed ,and soon after the train-ing camps of both teamsgot to work. Under the tu-telage of boxing legendsTommy Cadotte and TimmyMcGuiness , O'Grady hasnearly perfected his untest-ed jab at The Hit Factory inBay Ridge. JoJo comes intothe ring as a formidableopponent to a well-knownBroad Channel native.

Representing the Inter-national Brotherhood ofElectrical Workers andBungalow Bar, Tubridy isknown for his heavy hands.Equally recognizable is hisferocious appetite, andcommitment to the Art ofBlack Out. Trainer AbeSiederman has had his workcut out for him getting the

once handsome hitter intoshape, however he comesinto the ring with a recent

the smiles off of four un-lucky souls that happenedto be bullying a fellowpatron at the beautifullyrenovated establishment.

Wi th Th e Mu rp hy Bro th-ers, (O'Grady's brothers-in-law) as Tubridys cornermen, JoJo certainly has hishands full. BeefChip seesthis bout going at least oneround. According to Ve-gas odds makers, there aremore prop bets on if thematch will go the distance, and who will run out ofbreath first. RockawayOdds Maker Dicko has thisone favored 3-2 OGrady

Chasing Mister Softee:A CHAT WITH ROCKAWAY BEACHS ICE CREAM MAN

    By Katie McFadden

Nothing says summer likehearing the Mister Softee

jingle as he rolls down yourblock. Did you know the songhas lyrics? The creamiest, dreamiest soft ice-cream, youget from Mister Softee! Thats

just one line. If youre a reg-ular customer, he probablyknows your name and what

you want before you order, buthow much do you know aboutthe man behind the truck? Wechased down the RockawayBeach Mister Softee truck andcaught up with Argirios Kos-taras, better known as Ari, tolearn more about him.

Ari lives in Jackson Heights,Queens, but comes from Ko-staria in western Greece. Heleft Greece in 1980 and first

worked in the fur business af-ter coming to America. In thelate 80s, Ari says the business

went downhill and he startedlooking for a different job. In1990, a neighbor who owned aMister Softee truck asked Ari ifhe wanted to work for him. He

worked for his friend Pete for

one season before purchasinghis own franchise in 1991. Arican cover a route from Beach51st to Beach 149th, but hesbecome known as RockawayBeachs ice cream man whilefellow Softee, John, coversmostly uptown.

To answer some commonquestions: Why doesnt he

weigh 400 pounds? Ari says heactually gains more weight inthe winter. I have to taste theice cream every day, but whenI work, I dont eat much. Ialso have good genes, hesaid, but he does enjoy anoccasional soft serve or GoodHumor pop. Does the jingledrive him crazy? If anyone

would complain about themusic, its me because Ivebeen hearing it for so long, but you get used to it, hesaid. He would never changethe song but he admitted tolistening to his own music

while driving. Why does hecome around so late? To ca-

ter to the late night crowd. I

dont work with kids at night, most of my customers areadults, he said.

Ari says youll first see himin late March and he sticksaround until late October.

Ari rarely gets a day off in thesummer, as he works sevendays a week, as long as it i sntraining. Hell start his routearound noon and will work

until 10 p.m., or sometimeslater, but his day extendsmuch more. Mister Soft-ee cant just bring the truckhome with him. Theres ac-tually a Mister Softee Depot. The truck stays in OzonePark in a depot approved bythe Department of Health.

You cant keep the trucksanywhere. They undergoregular inspections by theDOH, Ari said. He wakes uparound 8:30 or 9 a.m. to putin new orders for the dayand to pick up and stock thetruck, and even earlier if thetruck is having problems.

At the end of every shift, Arispends two hours thoroughlycleaning. He usually doesntleave the depot until 1/1:30a.m. Cleaning is somethingIve been very strict about allthese years. I need to finishthe truck at night and makesure its ready for the nextday, he said. His care haspaid off. Hes had the same

truck for 21 years. It does the

job. You have to love the truckso it can love you back, Arisaid.

Ari also takes his cleaningskills into the offseason. I

work as a janitor for the Boardof Education at a school in

Woodside, he said. If he cannd some time off, Ari maytake a two or three-week tripto his homeland in Greece. Ari

is also a photographer in hisfree time. I got my rst cam-era when I was 13 years old,he said. He occasionally pho-tographs customers, after get-ting permission of course, andhell even jump in for a photo ifsomeone asks, but his favoritephotos are of landscapes.I love Rockaway because itgives you so many differentthings to photograph. It hasthe most beautiful sunsets Iveever seen. Sometimes if I donthave camera with me I take10 minutes just to enjoy thebeautiful sunset or rainbowsafter a storm, he said. I dontsell my photos. I just put themon Facebook so people cansee how beautiful Rockawayis, but occasionally someone

will tell me one of my photos ishanging in their living room,he said. Ari had several entriesin this years Rockaway Timesphoto contest, which made theseminalist round.Trough his many years of

    seeing Rockaway through a

lens or a windshield, Ari hasseen some changes, especial-ly when it comes to business. When I started in the 90s,

the streets were packed withpeople and now I think peo-ple spend too much time ontheir phones and computers.Kids used to play ball outside, but theyre not going out asmuch as they used to, he said.

With less people coming out tobuy ice cream, plus the rise ofeverything from insurance totaxes to gas and even ice creamprices, Ari has been forced toraise his prices from $1.25 toabout $2.50 for a cone. Immaking much less now than Idid 25 years ago, he said. Howmuch does he make? I canmake $200 a day or $500 a day.Every day is different. Oneprice has never changed. Ilove to see the smile on a childor adults face. I have custom-ers that are now parents whoused to get ice cream from me

when they were kids. It feelsgood to have people that like

you and grow up with you. Imhappy with all of my custom-ers. No matter where I go, we

have this beautiful relation-ship, he said. Ari says he alsohas a good relationship withthe local police, who offertheir help, even going as faras escorting him to a mechan-ic when his truck was havingproblems. Regular customershave also helped him replacetires on his truck. In return, Arihas given back to the commu-nity when needed. I had justfinished up my season whenSandy happened and becauseI live in Jackson Heights, I wasable to get gas and bring it toRockaway to help people withtheir generators and bringthem water. It was just some-thing nice to do.

Ari says hell continue toserve the community andbring smiles to local faces aslong as he can. I wouldvenever done this job for solong if it wasnt for Rocka-

way Beach and the Rockawaypeople. I love Rockaway andI admire the people. That will

    never change, Ari said.

down just one day after Star gotit. Rockaways roller disco par-ties were slated to start aroundMemorial Day, but as the truckrequired repair, the parties wereput on hold.

After two years of working to-ward her Rockaway roller discodreams, the rst party was heldlast Saturday. Ive been faced

with many obstacles along theway to make this happen andI lost my vision for a while butI worked really hard and Imthrilled that its nally here,Star said. Last Saturday was atrial run and it surpassed myexpectations. I had all thesepeople skating around at sun-set while you could hear thesound of the waves and it wasextraordinary.

Unlike her parties at Lake-side, which cost $18 a person,Rockaways parties are free ofcharge. Instead, she has beenpaying for everything from pur-chasing the rental truck to pay-ing for insurance and even rent

for the rink. Part of the reason

she wanted to bring the gift ofroller disco to the peninsula

was as a thank you to the com-munity. Im so appreciative ofhow supportive the commu-nity has been since I openedmy store. Everyone kept asking

when I was going to bring rollerdisco here and this is my way ofgiving back to the communityfor supporting me, she said. She also believes that rollerdisco is something the commu-nity can use. I love the Rock-away community and I believein the power of roller discoand bringing the communitytogether. Roller disco is betterthan any therapy. Moving to

the music and dressing up is

therapeutic. When my friendsare going through something, Itell them to come to the rollerdisco because you feel so much

better after. Rockaway has beenthrough so much with Sandyand I wanted to bring this giftto the community so everyonecan experience it, Star said.

Star has had a bit of help tobring roller disco to life. A bigpart of roller disco is the tunesto skate to. DJs Max Power andRich Hill will play all your roll-er disco favorites this summerand will keep it going at theirofficial after party at Playland.Teyre going to continue

with a dance party with a sim-ilar vibe to the roller discoparty, Star said. She also cred-its the Rockaway Rockies forshowing her the ropes aroundtheir home rink. Teyvebeen so welcoming and gaveme advice on things like thelighting around the rink, so Ihired some of them as skateguards to help lift people up ifthey fall and make sure peoplefollow the rules to have a fun, safe time, Star said.

    Stars Dreamland Roller Dis-

co parties at Prospect Park often

have performers and weeklythemes to add to the fun, whichStar says she may add down theline. As far as themes go, Im

waiting to see who comes andwhat they respond to. Well testout the tunes and see what kindof people are grooving to most, she said. With performers, the

whole concept of Dreamland ishaving these performers thattransport you into this magicaldreamland. Id love to bring inperformers, but being on a lim-ited budget, I cant afford it atthe moment, she said. Star isopen to accepting donationsto add performers and otherfun elements and may con-sider sponsorships from localbusinesses. For now, the mostimportant thing is getting theparty started. People need tosee roller disco and experiencethese parties rst because itsunlike anything in the world,Star said. Stars biggest dreamis to have her own permanentroller disco rink in the future.

Rock Em Sock EmFDNY VS. LONDON PD IN BOXING DUELS; GRUDGE BRAWLS TOO

    By Dylan Watton

New Yorks bravest boxers,Londons police pugilists, and

locals looking to settle a scorewill compete in matches forcharity on Friday, July 8. Teevent, billed as Te War at theShore, is being held outdoorsat St. Camillus, with the rstbout scheduled to begin at 7p.m. All ghts are sanctionedby USA Metro Boxing.

Rockaway has always been agreat neighborhood to supportre department events, BobbyMcGuire, President of the FD-NYs Bravest Boxing team, saidat the official weigh-in eventat Bungalow Bar on Monday,June 27. We thought it wouldbe great to hold these ghts

just steps away from the beau-tiful new boardwalk.

A total of 12ghts are current-ly scheduled for the evening. In addition to eight FDNY

vs. London Metro Police De-partment contests, four sanc-tioned grudge matches willtake place, including reght-ers taking on their brethren,a CROM Physical Culture vs.

Rockaway Ropes matchup, anda battle of bar owners. A varietyof weight classes and ghtingstyles will be showcased.

FDNY head trainer MikeReno said that the idea forthe transatlantic tilt stemmedfrom the World Police andFire Games, an Olympics-styleevent contested around the

world. We made some con-nections and decided well doit for our charity over here andfor their charity over there,

Reno said. Te London Met-ro PD currently has braggingrights as they were overall vic-torious in the 2015 event held

in the UK.Te FDNY Bravest Boxing

Team was founded in 1982when an organizer of a fund-raising event asked ve re-ghters and ve police officersto battle for charity. (McGuire,a Rockaway native who nowlives in Howard Beach, was ateam captain for many years, retiring from the ring in 1991.)In keeping with the teamsmottoWell ght anyone, anywhere, anytime.as longas its for a good causepro-ceeds from the event will go toBuilding Homes for Heroes, anorganization that builds mort-gage-free houses for injured

veterans. Tis year a home willbe built for USMC CorporalKevin Vaughn of Merrick, who

was wounded in Afghanistan. You see what these vets go

through and they give up somuch, whats getting in thering for three rounds? boxerJack Kirrane said. He will takeon Londons LukeTomas in a

cruiserweight contest and lookto maintain his 5-0 record inthe series. Most of you cantgo in the ring and ght for [the

veterans] but I can and I will.Kirrane said that he has been

boxing on and off since hewas 12 and has been part of theFDNYs ghting squad since2003. He has found it hard tohang up the gloves. You getthe itch. Im always showingup to help out at the shows and

when youre not being one of

the ghters its tough. Im 40so Im not sure how much Ihave left.

Perhaps the most anticipatedght will be between competi-tors who admittedly betweenthem have ve weeks of box-ing experience. Jamesons JoeJoe OGrady challenged Mar-tin Tubridy of Bungalow Bar,

who know each other from theGraybeards basketball leaguebut have never traded com-petitive blows. I was goingthrough the roster looking forsomeone in a similar weightclass and stupid enough toagree, OGrady said.

Tubridy, who describedcompeting in a boxing matchas a bucket list thing, ex-pressed some regret at accept-ing. I gotta be honest with

you, he ruined my summer,he laughed. I had to get myRocky starter kit going andstop drinking beer.

    Both OGrady and Tubridy

    admitted they were anxious

and nervous less than twoweeks prior to the bell. Mar-tins probably more nervousthan me, OGrady quipped.Tubridy did not deny theclaim, saying Its the chanceto get knocked out in front of

your family and friends for theChampionship of Rockaway.Te fear did not deter himfrom adding a little trash talkin an impromptu promo. Wealready have the coldest beerand now were gonna settlethis in the ring.

War at the Shore is spon-sored by Georgi Vodka, Ever-last, Budweiser, Long Trail, and Tullamore Dew. Ticketsfor the event are $25 (ringside$50) and can be purchased at

www.fdnyboxing.com. Chil-dren under 12 are admittedfree. Intermission will featurea performance by the FDNYEmerald Society Bagpipers.Food, drinks, a memorabil-ia auction, and a Cuban cigar

    roller are also advertised.

Jamaica Bay Softball: Week 4 RecapByTe Commissioner

Tings are starting to heat up aswere starting to see who are thecontenders and who are the pre-tenders. Due to make-up games

from Week 1, we had 12 gameson the schedule this week. Fourteams were forced to play fourgames and all but one had a pret-ty good day. Out of the nine teamsin the league only the top sixmake the playoffs.Tere is only adifference of 2.5 games from the7th place team to the 1st placeteam so anything can happen inthe next few weeks.

In the battle of the teams with-out a win, the Chuggernauts tookon the Orioles. Both games wentback and forth, but the Chuggs

were able to edge out the Os 10-8in Game 1 and then 11-7 in Game2. After their rst winning sea-son and nishing 3rd last year, ithasn't been so good for the Ori-oles as they dropped their 8th ina row this year. Rumor has it thatthey were tanking this year tograb the #1 pick in the draft.

Other early game action hadOld Head taking on the youngMoneyballs. A quick 2-0 leadfrom Old Head and chants ofGarbage Balls were heardcoming from their dugout. JackTubridy didn't take that too light-

ly as he had a day at the plateand played a solid 2nd base tohelp the Moneyballs come backto win 4-3. Moneyballs came outthe gate hot in Game 2 and woneasily 7-3. With the sweep, theMoneyballs nd themselves in atie forrst.

Due to being rained out Week1, the Knights of Columbus tookon Morning Wood in the last setof early games. KOC jumpedto a quick lead in Game 1 butMorning Wood battled back andblew open the game to win 11-4.In Game 2 it was the other wayaround. M.W. had a nice leadbut clutch hitting by the Knightsgot them back into the game andeventually the lead. Great playsby Ryan Suglia and James Leekept Morning Wood offthe boardin last few innings and KOC wasable to hold on for a 12-9 win.

Morning Wood wasn't doneplaying as they had to take onthe No-Shows. Game 1 was closefor most of the game but one toomany errors for the No-Shows letM.W. tack on a bunch of runs and

    win 8-3. Game 2 wasn't close at

all as Morning Wood won by themercy rule 14-2. Morning Woodtook 3/4 on the day and are tiedfor the top spot in the league.

On the othereld the Knights ofColumbus took on the hot Mistteam. Te Mists were anythingbut hot as KOC swept the Mists

winning 11-8 and then 11-2. Mis-ts needed only one win to reachtheir win total from last year but

will have to wait another week.KOC had a big day winning 3/4and trying to make a push to nda spot in the postseason.Te Mis-ts are sitting at .500 and holdingon to the last spot in playoffs.

After getting swept early on OldHead had to sit around until allthe games were done to make uptheir Week 1 matchup with theNo-Shows. No-Shows bats nal-ly came alive after being quietin their earlier games but it still

wasn't enough to take down OldHead. Two good close games butOld Head came out on top 7-5 andthen 10-9. No-Shows dropped allfour of their games and are on the

verge of missing the playoffs fortherst time in their young histo-

    GOLF ADVICE

    PUTTINGBy Joel Garyn (U.S.G.T.F. Instruc-tor)

You can hold your putter indifferent ways. I prefer the re-

verse overlap for better feeland keeping putter head ona square alignment. It is themost common one used. Youplace your left index fingerover the little finger of yourright hand (or extend it overall the fingers of your righthand). Both your thumbs arepositioned straight down thegrip. An important aspect ofthe grip is where the puttershaft rests in your hands.Place your putter in the life-lines of your hands. This po-sition reduces any tendencyfor your wrists to hinge andunhinge during the puttingstroke. It also helps to reduceputter face rotation.

In putting, a common faultis for the right hand to over-

power the left hand in the for-

ward stroke and for the putt tobe pulled LEFT of the target. To reduce any tendency forthe right hand to dominate, theright hand is rested gently onthe shaft allowing the left handto guide the putting stroke. Youshould pay close attention to

    the correct alignment of your

shoulders and forearms afteryou have placed your hands onyour putter.

    Stay still to make moreputts.

After you have str uckyour putt, hold your fol-low-through for about 3-6

    seconds after the ball leaves

the club face and check thefollowing: 1. Has your body re-mained in its original addressposition? 2. Is the path of yourputter still on the correct targetline? 3. Has your putter faceremained square to the target?

If any of these three thingshappen, you are losing strokesdue to missed putts.

Last word for this segment.Remember to keep your ad-dress position well after you'vestruck your putt. Tis alone

will help your putting strokestays square to your target andhelp you make more putts.

Stay absolutely quiet or still, the only movement is yourshoulders that move yourarms which will move theputter. I cannot emphasize tostrongly how important that is.Next week we will talk aboutshort putts, long putts, drills tohelp you become a condentputter.

Have a safe and happy week!

Woerners WorldONCE A RUNNER KERRI GALLAGHER PART 1

    By Ryan Patrick Woerner

Te below is the rst in-stallment of a two-part series

chronicling Rockaway residentKerri Gallaghers journey tothis years United States Trackand Field Olympic Trials inthe 1500-meter event. Part II

will appear in next weeks is-sue of Te Rockaway Times inadvance of her rst race at thispivotal meet.

You could point to a mul-titude of turning points thatspurred Belle Harbors KerriGallagher to the starting lineat next weeks United StatesTrack and Field Olympic Tri-als. Was it the parochial schoolmedals she regularly acquiredat small-time meets held in

Van Cortlandt Park or the dryheat of Washington Heights

Armory? Maybe it was herrst Atlantic-10 individual800-meter Title while runningfor Vince Lombardis almamater in the Bronx. One couldposit that it could have beenher Penn Relays Mile victoryin the spring of 2015 at historicFranklin Field in the Womens

Mile over Canadian Olympianand NCAA Champion SheilaReed. Just months before thattriumph in the City of Brother-ly Love, she was lapped (andplaced last) at the MillroseGames in the Womens 3,000Meter Run. Was it that disap-pointing showing in front ofhometown family and friendsthat motivated her to the mostelite class of middle-distancerunners she now nds herselfcompeting against?

Nope, the soft-spokenbut condent Gallagher says.It was right after graduation(from Fordham) at the HarborLight, me and John Lovett metto recap my college career, andhe wanted to gauge my intereston continuing to run post-col-lege. Lovett, who ran the lead-offleg on Manhattan Colleges1973 NCAA Indoor ChampionDistance Medley Relay andserved as Gallaghers trackmentor at Bishop Kearney inBrooklyn, was not trying to

    push her in any speci

    c direc-

tion he simply wanted her toknow a possible opportuni-ty existed in athletics beyondher university years. Afterconvincing the Harbor Lightsunshaven barkeep to switchfrom the Yankee game overto a four-digit cable channelshowing the U.S. Track andField Championships on acorner-spot television, Lovettcut to the chase. Matt Cen-trowitz, a former Olympic har-rier and friend of his throughtheir shared high school almamater (the now-extinct Pow-er Memorial), was operat-ing a professional traininggroup out of the Washington,D.C.-area. Gallagher, who justaccepted a position at MorganStanley in Manhattan, hadtwo choices: follow what herfather, John, aptly labeled adirect trajectory to businesssuccess, or wade in the meta-phoric waters of the dreadedunknown that encapsulates acareer as a professional dis-

    tance runner.

Centrowitz may have hada relationship with Lovettspanning five decades, buthe was no stranger to Gal-lagher either. In addition tomolding professional run-ners under the umbrella ofhis D.C.-based Pacers TrackClub, he serves as the full-time Cross Country/Trackand Field coach at AmericanUniversity. When Gallagh-er was a senior at Kearney,he formally recruited her to

join his college program thathe was starting to build intoregional relevance. Thereare types of kids I am betterat working wit h right away, admits the brash, old-schoolcoach. Running in Rocka-

way is different from runningin Santa Barbara. You haveto be tougher there, smarterthere, and be able to adaptto different things. Gallagh-er hit all three of those keyqualities right on the head

    which made their pairing all

but a no brainer at the time.

But it didnt work out toCentrowitzs liking the rsttime around. Citing not be-ing ready to make a move like

that as her reason for at-tending nearby Fordham over

American, Gallagher went onto have a proud career for theRams. Tere is a difference, however, between the com-mitment required to win a fewindividual conference races ina small Jesuit universitys con-ference and the commitmentnecessitated by competing ata world-class level. To be clear,Gallagher did not qualify forthe NCAA National Champi-onship as an individual she

was relegated to the IC4Ameet, which for all you hoopsfans is an NIT of sorts held atthe end of each season.

Professional running wasnot even on my radar at thatpoint. Not one bit.Tis story becomes even

more compelling at this junc-ture, when Gallagher made

what appeared to some as acursory decision to pack herthings and follow I-95 duesouth to what southerners call

Te DMV, short for wherethe DC-Maryland, and Virgin-ia areas coalesce.

Coach Centrowitz knewthat I felt a bit unfilled with the

way my college career endedand I felt this was an oppor-tunity I would regret passingup on is how Gallagher de-scribed her sentiment at thetime.Tis is where, like most great

stories of success, her exist-ence in the familiar and securesurroundings of her home-town ended, and the challengeof pursuing Track and Fieldgreatness began.

Kerri will be running in theWomens 1500 Meter FirstRound at the U.S. OlympicTeam Trials on Tursday July7, 2016 at 6:26 p.m. PT (9:26p.m. ET). NBC Sports Network(7/7, 7/8) and NBC (7/10) willbe covering the entire eventlive check with your localcable provider. It will also beavailable to stream online at

Yep! Its official kOoK seasonand theres no shortage of may-

hem out in the water.Sitting with the family and

some buddies over the weekendat the main jetty, watching thecarnage of so many collisionsand near misses, it was painfullyobvious so many of these people

are clueless as to what surng et-iquette is and if there are any sortof rules at all.

As for the good surfers ag-onizingly trying to avoid thekOoKs flying down the faceat them, occasionally telling

that kOoK what theyre doingwrong, only to fall on deaf earsand the kOoKs going so far asto say Hey, youre ruiningit for everyone going acrossthe wave!, it seems as thoughthere is no hope for us decent

    S U R F I N G R U L E S

The Surfing Rules are the most important thing you MUST learn before you set foot in the water for the first time. The surfing rules are

a set of guidelines that all surfers must abide by in order for all water users to get along and have fun, stay happy and reduce the risk

of injury. If you enter the water without learning these few surfing rules then chances are you will tick someone off, get shouted at and

worst of all, possibly hurt someone really bad or get hurt yourself.

    1. Have fun, but not at the expense of the other people in the water. Its not just about you,

be aware of ALL people around you, even when youre riding a wave.

    2. Don't drop in, this means don't catch a wave that someone else is already riding.

The surfer on the inside, closest to the breaking part of the wave, has right of way

    3. Don't paddle through the line-up. (This means

don't paddle out where the other surfers are riding, it's very dangerous for all involved).

    4. Dont ditch your board! Always hold on to your board when a wave hits you. Throwing your

board away and allowing your leg rope to do the job for you is very dangerous to the other

    surfers in the water

    5. Don't be a snake! A snake is a surfer who constantly paddles to the inside, or turn inside someone after they started to paddle into

a wave, and then invoke the drop in rule. In other words, try not to be greedy.

    6. The surfer on the wave has right of way, if paddling out, try to stay out of the way, take the

hit from the white water rather than risk ruining another surfers wave. You would not run into

traffic, do not paddle into the line of an oncoming surfer.

    7. Beginners Use common sense where crowds are an issue. If you turn up to a break that is

already heavily crowded, then consider surfing somewhere else. Adding to an already frustrated

and crowded peak won't help you or them.

    8. Wear a leg rope. Occasionally you'll see a surfer in the water who is not using a leg rope, they are usually very experienced andrarely loose control, and they are the only exception to this rule.

    9. Respect, you need to give it before you get it. Both the more experienced surfers and the locals, remember this. When surfing

away from home, you are surfing in someone else's home.

    10. Never use your board as a weapon or as a means of protection from a possible collision. Many beginners

will throw their boards in front of another surfer when afraid of a possible collision. This is incredibly dangerous.

These are the basic rules that have been in force for decades out in the surf. Yet for the last ten years these rules

have been broken on a regular basis, mainly by newcomers to surfing. The result is chaos, and learners have

come to be resented by the more experienced surfers. Learn these rules and apply them, become part of

the solution, rather than a part of the problem.

surfers to get a wave alone.I saw one guy trying to surf

    - hes standing in thigh deepwater waiting for the whitewater to come and then at-tempting to jump to his feet onthe board before the white

    wate r arrive s. Ver y inven-tive I thought, but alas he

wa snt hav ing any luck. SoI give him a hint on how todo it properly (thatll be $90please!) and hes so pissedat me hes almost frothing

at the mouth You know Ivehad sur f less ons b efore!, atthat point I respond Then

you should ge t your mone yback, its going to take you adecade to figure how to do itthat way.

So for all you newbies andfrothing kOoKs, here is a guideto the surfing rules graciouslyprovided by the Gotham SurfClub & Rockaway Times.

    And remember to alwaysPULL IN!!!!
