Hurricane Joaquin may have spared the eastcoast, but South Carolina wasn’t spared theeffects of extreme weather earlier this week.Record rainfall across the state triggered ma- jor flash floods, causing property damage andmore than a dozen deaths. Knowing firsthand

the effects of major flooding from our owncatastrophe almost three years ago, the com-munity is coming together to help those downsouth.

Breezy Point resident Maura Buckley is hop-ing to pay it forward to the victims of the flood-ing in South Carolina with the help of her or-ganization, Operation Kid Comfort. Buckleyhas started a gift card collection to help those who were affected. “I saw what was happen-ing in South Carolina and it’s pretty much what we went through up here with Sandy. We knowfirsthand that basically, we wouldn’t have beenable to get through those times without thesupport of small groups. People are still strug-gling to get back after relying on help from

city and government agencies. It’s these typesof volunteer organizations and regular peoplethat can help immediately and we want to payit forward and let those people know that we’rehere for them like they were there for us,” Buck-ley said.

Buckley says the events taking place inSouth Carolina hit close to home on an emo-tional level. “Everyone thought Hurricane Joa-quin might hit us and all of that fear and emo-tion came back. My son heard hurricane on the

news and he was nervous to go to school andstarted making a list of what he wanted to takein case we had to evacuate. Luckily it went outto sea, but it brings back these memories and when we see the pictures from South Carolina, you know exactly what these people are feeling

and what they’re going through, and you knowthey could use help,” Buckley said.

So she put out a call for action through hergroup, Operation Kid Comfort, which startedin December 2012 as a way to bring comfort

October marks the three-yearanniversary of Superstorm

    Sandy. Our neighborhoods were

devastated. Most of us wereleft with damage to our homesand significant collateral damage which became apparent in thedays and weeks that followed.

One local business ownercontinues to support all commu-nities affected by Sandy. Queens

resident, Joseph DiBenedetto, is a prominent attor-ney and owner of Marquis Auto of Queens – one ofthe largest leasing companies in New York with over20 years of experience in the automotive industry. On

this 3-year anniversary, DiBenedetto pledges to con-tinue to provide support to our community by issuinga one thousand dollar ($1,000.00) voucher redeemableagainst any vehicle lease, finance or purchase.

The Queens location has been open a little over two years and DiBenedetto attributes Sandy as a main rea-son for its formation. “Like many others, I and most ofour staff lived through Sandy. I had four feet of waterin my home and I lost two automobiles. My story isn’tunique. All of my neighbors were in the same positionas me. We all wanted a sense of normalcy and triedto piece our lives together as quickly as possible. Most

rushed to purchase or lease automobiles out of neces-sity and in the process overpaid. It was upsetting tosee a community in need taken advantage of and so I

decided to open a Queens-based office.”“These terrible leases are set to expire in the upcom-

ing months and my office is dedicated to providingexceptional service and pricing to all of our customers. Our voucher of $1,000.00 marks our continued com-mitment to rebuilding all communities damaged bySandy. Redeeming the voucher is simple. During yourinitial call or visit to our office, simply inform us that you wish to redeem your voucher and we will apply a$1,000.00 credit. It’s that easy.”

Marquis Auto of Queens offers all makes and mod-els for less than dealerships and their competitors.

They have built a reputation on exceptional service andpricing. Like your trusted stock broker and real estateagent, Marquis Auto of Queens brokers the best dealon the automobile of your choice. They purchase auto-mobiles directly from a manufacturer’s fleet depart-ment, bypassing dealerships, and pass the savings onto their customers. Given their vast network of fleetdepartments, Marquis Auto of Queens has the abilityto locate hard-to-find automobiles. They also specializein helping customers get out of their bad leases. Their white-glove service also includes free delivery to yourhome or business.

October is Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month at St. John’s EpiscopalHospital and across the country. According to the American CancerSociety, one in eight women (12 per-cent) of women in the U.S. will de-velop invasive breast cancer duringtheir lifetimes, and sadly over 40,000 will die from the disease this year. St.John’s encouraged all women to beaware of the factors that can lead toincrease in the risk of getting breastcancer, including a family history ofthis and ovarian cancer.  Ways to decrease the risk of getting

diagnosed include decreasing alco-hol intake, a healthy diet consistingof fruits and vegetables and less redmeat and fatty foods, and weight loss. Women over 40 should get annualmammograms or earlier for people with some of the stated risk factors as well as clinical breast exams. Finally,it is important to simply know yourbody by giving self-breast exams andcontacting a doctor immediately inthe event of any changes or abnor-malities. To schedule a mammogramat St. John’s call 718-869-7780.

Community Board 14 will holdtheir monthly meeting on Tuesday,October 13 at 7:15 p.m. On the agen-da for the meeting is an informa-tional presentation by the NYC Eco-nomic Development Corporation, which will provide an update on theRockaway ferry. The Budget Com-mittee will go over a draft of the capi-

tal and expense budget for fiscal year2017, with brief public participationallowed. Later, the Parks and PublicSafety Committee will provide up-dates on the sand piper playgroundand boardwalk reconstruction. Fi-nally, the Transportation Committee will discuss the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s plan to get bike lanes onthe Rockaway Freeway.  As always public speakers will begiven three minutes to discuss issuesimportant to them provided theysign in before the meeting starts.Community Board 14’s meeting takeplace at the Knights of Columbus lo-

cated at 333 Beach 90th Street.

With the constant droning of air-plane engines still a daily fact of lifefor residents of Queens, a congress- woman representing parts of theborough has introduced legislationto take responsibility of the noise

away from the Federal Aviation Ad-ministration (FAA) and back into inthe hands of the Environmental Pro-tection Agency (EPA). Grace Meng, who represents neighborhoods suchas Flushing, Rego Park, and ForestHills, said that the Quiet Commu-nities Act of 2015 would restore theEPA’s Office of Noise Abatement andControl, which previously oversawthe nation’s noise control activitiesuntil it was defunded by the Reagan Administration in 1981 due to bud-

get cuts. The bill would also requirethe EPA to do studies on airport noiseand examine the FAA’s noise mea-surement methods.  “Noise is an environmental issueand the EPA has handled mitiga-

tion efforts in the past,” Meng said.“It’s time to take noise control awayfrom the FAA, and give the EPA a try.” Airplane noise has greatly increasedsince 2012 when the FAA changedflight patterns for planes departingLaGuardia Airport, causing themto frequently fly over residentialneighborhoods. The bill has beenco-sponsored by a number of localCongressional Democrats, includingSteve Israel, Joe Crowley, and Kath-leen Rice.

One of my favorite thingsto do in New York is to walkthrough the neighborhoodsand imagine the history of thestreets. An even better way to

get that sense is to go on a pubcrawl of the bars of the 1800s ofNew York. There aren’t as manyleft as you might imagine, someare famous, others less so. Butthey all tell a story, a piece offabric, that is New York. So hereare some of my favorite placesalong one of my walks, the WallStreet to Village tour.

Start off at Fraunces Tavernat the foot of Broad Street. Thisplace is amazing and worth avisit just by itself. It is whereGeorge Washington said good-bye to his troops after the Revo-lutionary War, and has a greatmuseum upstairs. The bar wasredone recently but it has thatcolonial feel to it. On the week-ends they have Irish music.

Around the corner is a newfavorite, it’s not from the 1800sbut feels like it, and since it wasopened by a friend, gets a men-tion here: The Dead Rabbit. It was named best cocktai l bar a

few years ago when it opened, and the name comes straightout of the Gangs of New York.Try to get upstairs i f you can, it’sa cool place.

At this early junction youhave a choice, should you walk,

train or cab it to the next spot.I always walk, but people getmad at me because I alwayssay it’s only a few more blocks.By the way, a word of caution if you are ever with me, it neveris a few more blocks. So off toNorth Moore and Varick Streetsto Walkers Bar, a place wi th realtin ceilings and an old time feel.It qualifies as a bar from the1800s because, it is. A good sec-ond stop along the way north.

The next stop is a little fur-ther west and north, SpringStreet and Hudson to the EarInn. The Ear Inn is a designat-ed landmark and was built inthe late 18th century. The namecame to be because the wordBar lit up in fluorescent lightslost some of its luster and onlyshowed Ear, so it became theEar Inn. Check out the historyon the walls and the book onthe bar describing the history;read it over a pint.

From here we walk again,up Hudson Street to West 11th

Street to the White Horse Tavernbuilt in 1880. The White Horseis famous for all the literary pa-trons that once drank there in-cluding Norman Mailer, JamesBaldwin, Jack Kerouac and AllenGinsberg. But the most famoushowever was Dylan Thomas who wrot e “do not go gentle int o thatgood night.” He drank himselfinto oblivion in 1953 and died.

Rage on Dylan. Now we head east toward

Third Avenue and East 7th streethome to McSorley’s Ale House.McSorley’s has been aroundsince about 1860. Abe Lincoln,Ulysses Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Woody Gurt hie and HunterThompson were all known tohave imbibed at McSorley’s. And you can add my name tothat list too. If you are a real

to children in Newtown, CT af-ter the tragic Sandy Hook El-ementary School shooting. Withthe help of Matt Piccione, theRockaway Point Volunteer FireDepartment, and other families, organizations and individuals,

the group collected thousandsof stuffed animals and deliv-ered them throughout Newtownshortly before Christmas.

Carrying on with the missionof helping others through trag-edy, Operation Kid Comfort hascontinued to help others acrossthe country during their own ca-tastrophes such as Oklahoma af-ter the May 2013 tornadoes andColorado after severe flooding inSeptember 2013. The group hasalso collected toys for Stony BrookHospital and for Secret SandyClaus events. In February of this

year, Buckley started a GoFund-Me fundraiser for the Darcey fam-ily of Belle Harbor after KathrynDarcey and her 3-year-old son,Declan were left immobile afterbeing hit by a car while walkinghome from Mass. Buckley raised$30k through the campaign, al-lowing the family to pay for medi-cal expenses and more. Now themission is South Carolina.

In order to get those in needsome immediate help, Opera-tion Kid Comfort is currentlyonly collecting gift cards as theyare easy for the victims to useto get what they need and areeasier to ship out quickly and inhigh volume. “We are request-ing gift cards to Home Depot,Lowes, Visa, MasterCard, Amex,Bed Bath & Beyond, Sears, Ba-bies & Toys R Us, Walmart, etc.Basically cards that the familiescan use to help in the recovery

and rebuild efforts that will fol-low,” Buckley said in a post onthe group’s Facebook page.

Buckley says she has family inunaffected areas of South Caro-lina that are helping to put herin touch with area churches andother organizations that can ac-cept the gift cards and distributethem appropriately.

A few residents of South Caro-lina responded to Buckley’s callto action, showing their appreci-ation for the effort. “As a SC resi-dent who was affected, seeingthis makes me feel amazed byhumanity. Thank you OKC,” Ai-mee Louise said. “Oh my good-ness. I am in SC and just want tosay thank you for your kindnessand generosity! So many havelost so much. God Bless!” GlendaBranch Shelton said.  Buckley says she has already

started to receive gift card do-nations from different parts ofthe neighborhood, especiallyBroad Channel, and individu-als have stepped up to help withcollecting like Cindy ColleranMangan and Vikki Apice, whovolunteered her gym, CyberzoneHealth Center, as a drop-off sitefor donations. Gift cards can

also be mailed directly to MauraBuckley c/o Operation Kid Com-fort, 12 ½ Neptune Walk, Rocka- way Point, NY 11697. For moreinformation, follow the “Op-eration Kid Comfort” FacebookPage. Buckley can be reacheddirectly at 917-855-4683 or [email protected].“Let’s make it a Three Year Anni-versary of Hurricane Sandy PayIt Forward project and get thisdone!” she said.  Even after the South Carolinacollection is complete, Buckleysays the work of Operation KidComfort won’t be done anytimesoon. “I’ll probably continuethis as long as I’m able to. Itfeels great to help people, but Idon’t do it to feel good. It’s justthe right thing to do,” she said, adding that she hopes otherscontinue to pay it forward. “We

live in this crazy, twisted world.Every time I turn on the news, there are stories about killings orsomeone hurting someone, so Ifeel in my own little way, I can tryto make a difference. The morepeople you can get involved andthe more you have people doinggood, it might actually changehow things are working in the world.”

There’s a chill in the air but theRockaway Beach Surf Club is keep-ing things warm with its Fall WarmUp featuring a new culinary de-light by Andrew Field, chef of Ta-coway Beach. Field has introducedramen to the peninsula with Noo-dle Beach, but it’s not your 10-centcollege noodle soup.

Coming off a successful firstsummer of Tacoway Beach, Fieldis switching gears for the off sea-son. “Tacos, the way that we cameup with them eight years ago, aredesigned for the summer. The top-pings are cold and are good for warmer climates,” Field said, butfor the colder season, he’s tryingout something he’s wanted to doover the past few years. With ac-cess to the inside bar of the RBSC,the opportunity to introduce acold weather delicacy has present-

ed itself. “At 96th Street, I wouldhave run into some hurdles duringthe winter, but with the bar here, people can bring food inside,”Field said. “This was good timing.Food habits change based on the weather and this was the climateto have something super warmlike ramen.”  The last day for tacos was Sep-tember 27. After a week of transi-

tion, Field reopened on Saturday,October 3 as Noodle Beach andthe first day was a hit. “It was awe-some. There’s been way more sup-port than I had anticipated,” hesaid. Customers currently havetwo menu options at NoodleBeach: meat or veggie. “The meatoption is a bone broth with a bro-ken sausage meatball, pork fat, green onions and other toppings,”Field said. “The veggie option isa mushroom broth with kombuseaweed, marinated tofu skin andsautéed mushrooms.” Both op-tions contain fresh noodles fromSun Noodle, not the dried versionfrom Top Ramen or Maruchan.  The Japanese noodle soup filledbellies and warmed bones of those who came out to try it as the aromafilled the crisp fall air. Inside, bar-tenders served seasonal drinks likehot apple cider, dark and stormy’sand hot toddies. However the food

and drinks aren’t the only hot as-pect of the Fall Warm Up. Field hasasked other local businesses to join in on the food market everySunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fieldis selling items like homemade hotsauces through Rockaway Foods. Also joining in is Edgemere Farm, which had a full supply of freshvegetables, fruits and herbs grownright on the local farm, homemade

breads by Arts & Parts and cheesesfrom upstate diary farms. “We’vebeen selling produce to TacowayBeach all summer and when An-drew approached us to be one ofthe vendors, we were more thanhappy to participate,” MichelleCashen of Edgemere Farm said. “Ithink people struggle with Rocka- way being a beach community, soany way to extend the season is sosignificant. It gets people to con-tinue to come out here,” Marymi-chael D’Onofrio said.  Those who stop by the marketcan also do some retail shoppingfrom vendors like Goldie’s andZingara Vintage. Sarah Trogdonof Goldie’s Natural Beauty sells acollection of homemade beautyand bath products, which are alsoavailable in some local shops. ErinSilvers opened her vintage cloth-ing shop Zingara Vintage on Beach91st Street this summer and is

sharing her collection of clothingfrom the Victorian era to the 1990sat the market.

Field says having other localvendors is a good way to attract avaried crowd. “If it were just thebar, you’d have a handful of a cer-tain type of crowd, but with moremixed types of human energy, youhave more of a chance of creat-ing a scene. Business brings more

business. Having that collectivebit make it a little bit warmer,” hesaid.  Field is planning a large fall har-vest market on October 18 and aholiday market on December 13. As of now, the regular market is

open every Sunday and NoodleBeach is open every Saturdayfrom 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundaysfrom 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as long as itproves popular. “We’ll keep doingthis until nobody shows up. This will be an interesting experiment,”he said.  The Rockaway Beach Surf Clubis located off the Rockaway Free- way at 302 Beach 87th Street.

This is the first in a series of ar-ticles about the neighborhoods ofRockaway. In an effort to profilethese areas, we’ve talked to resi-dents and business owners abouttheir little slice of the peninsula, starting with Belle Harbor.

According to Wikipedia, BelleHarbor is “typically referred to thearea between Beach 126th andBeach 141st Streets.” But as a near-lifelong resident of this particularneighborhood, Belle Harbor forme begins at the block-long Cron-ston Triangle between Beach 124thand Beach 123rd Street. For years,I would take my dog Veronica toplay there, despite the signs tellingus not to. The triangle offers someof Rockaway’s most pristine viewsof the Manhattan skyline; one ofthe indelible images etched into

my mind is the seemingly weeks-long lingering smoke from the ru-ins of the Twin Towers. Heading upBeach Channel Drive, the woodenflower boxes at the triangle werean instantaneous reminder of myhouse right up on the 400s block ofBeach 124th Street. And no matter

what Wikipedia says, I wrote myaddress from the age of eight tothe age of 23 as Belle Harbor, NY,11694.

Wikipedia again states, “Themakings of Belle Harbor began in1900, when a New York State judgeordered that the land west of Rock-

away Park be put up for auction. The area that makes up Belle Har-bor and the neighboring commu-nity of Neponsit was bought by Ed-

ward P. Hatch, whom after a couple years, sold it to the West RockawayLand Company in 1907.” A majorlandmark of the neighborhood isthe gorgeous Belle Harbor YachtClub, founded in 1905 when “agrant [agreement] was made be-tween the West Rockaway Land Co.and the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, stating that the grant was intendedto convey 20 plots of upland andthat to such extent the West Rock-away Land Company guaranteed. The purchase price for the BelleHarbor property was $4000, whichincluded 200 square feet on land,”according to their website.

Belle Harbor has since growninto one of Rockaway’s most resi-dential and tight-knit areas. “It’s a

well-established community, andpeople have strong roots in thiscommunity,” Hank Iori, presidentof the Belle Harbor Property Own-ers Association, said. He has livedin Belle Harbor for 36 years. “Mostpeople know every neighbor ontheir block. They’ve watched theirkids grow up.” When asked what he

liked about growing up in the area,Nicholas Cheng, 18, said “It has to

be the small community. You wereable to go place to place, on footor on a bike and every person youpass is either someone you know,or someone you’ve seen.”

I grew up across the street fromSeth Krakauer, who has spent hisentire life in the same blue house

with the large open porch onBeach 124th Street. He even as-serts that his name is still carvedsomewhere in the PS114 school-

yard circa 1968. “I guess the bestpart was I could just walk around, ride my bike,” Krakauer, 60, said.“But the beach has always beenmy primary. I could hang thereanytime I wanted, whether it washot or cold.”

Belle Harbor differs from otherRockaway neighborhoods in itsproximity to water. No house ismore than four blocks from eitherthe bay or the ocean. Once I could

ride a bike, nothing beat headingto the beach on my black Iron-horse cruiser, chair strapped to myback and maybe a boogieboarddangling by its strap. In other areasof the peninsula, where the housesare more separate from the beach, this may be a much more dauntingtask.

Perhaps the heart of the neigh-borhood is Beach 129th Street, oneof Rockaway’s primary commer-cial areas between Cronston Av-enue and Newport Avenue and St.Francis de Sales Church betweenNewport Avenue and Rockaway

Beach Boulevard. The street ishome to some of the area’s oldestestablishments such as Jameson’sand Mr. Giuseppe’s Barber Shop.

Another mainstay of the block hasbeen John Maroney. Along with his

wife Laura, he has operated theMini Mall for 37 years in the samelocation, right in the middle of theblock.

“The amount of ‘hellos’ I say perday is ridiculous,” he said. “There’sa lot of love and friendship in thisneighborhood. My customersare also my friends. I don’t knowif I could necessarily say that if I

worked on 116th Street.” He alsospoke on the size of his customerbase. “It’s a large area [in Rocka-

way] but there’s only so many peo-ple. Compare it to the same sizearea in Brooklyn and there wouldbe quadruple that number of peo-ple.”

Rockaway has certainly gonethrough times of turmoil but BelleHarbor has been through morethan most. The area was hard hitby 9/11 due to high concentra-tion of FDNY and NYPD personnelin the area; just two months anda day later, Flight 587 crashed onBeach 131st, killing five people on

the ground and leveling multiplehouses. And in October 2012, the

effects of Hurricane Sandy causedseveral homes and businesses toburn down, including neighbor-

hood mainstay the Harbor Lighton Beach 130th Street. While someof the houses have been rebuilt, many remain empty lots, includ-ing the aforementioned restau-rant.

While Sandy has changed theneighborhood, in some ways per-manently, Belle Harbor has keptits character intact. “Physically,

and even after the storm it re-ally looks very much the same,”Krakauer said. “There hasn’t been

any kind of major construction tochange the old style homes. Thechange would be only the cost ofowning a home. $15,000 in theearly ‘60s is now out of reach formy most people.” In fact, 129thStreet-based Rockaway Proper-ties sold a house for $3 million just

     weeks ago. “When Sandy came

Quiet Your MindLast summer one of my col-

umns dealt with smoking cessa-tion. I briefly touched on elec-tronic or e-cigarettes but did notgo into detail. I thought that look-ing closer at e-cigarettes wouldmake for an interesting topic. I,probably like most people, as-sumed that they were essentiallynicotine and water. While doingresearch for this column it helpedthat I had a degree in organicchemistry. It turns out that theyare much more than nicotine and water.

As e-cigarettes are not mar-keted for any specific use ortreatment they are not regulatedby the government. This meansthat there is no quality testingso the manufacturer can essen-tially put anything they like intothe product. One study that ana-lyzed the product found that theliquid part contained 66 percent

propylene glycol (used to maketheater fog, used as a solvent inpharmaceutical manufacturingand used as antifreeze for boatand RV water systems. Low tox-icity if swallowed. Not to be con-fused with ethylene glycol whichis automotive antifreeze and ishighly toxic), 24 percent glycer-ine (a lubricant used in supposi-tories for constipation) and fla-vorings of less that 0.1 percent.Prolonged inhalation of propyl-ene glycol can cause throat irrita-tion, cough, eye irritation, head-ache, dizziness and drowsiness.

A number of other studiesfound unlisted substances in e-cigarettes. Included in these sub-stances were tobacco-specific ni-trosamines (TSNAs), diethylene

glycol, formaldehyde (a knowncarcinogen), acetaldehyde andother organic substances. TSNAsare cancer-causing and can alsobe formed in the body from in-haling nicotine. Reading the listof chemicals that was found re-minded me of an experience mydad and I had many years ago. We used to love drinking Borden’scanned milkshakes until one day we read the list of ingredients. They contained so many chemi-cals that we decided that since we couldn’t pronounce them, weshouldn’t consume them.

Many will argue that e-cig-arettes are safer and less toxicthan smoking tobacco. Whilethat argument may have merite-cigarettes are turning out to beless safe than originally thought. However there was one review ofa number of studies that lookedat possible contaminant expo-

sures and compared them to oc-cupational hygiene (OSHA) stan-dards. They concluded that there was no cause for concern aboutincreased health risk from thechemicals in the e-cigarettes butremember that’s what the gov-ernment said about the air qual-ity at Ground Zero after 9/11/01.

The bottom line is that nico-tine is highly addictive. Those wishing to quit smoking shoulduse traditional nicotine-replace-ment therapies and kids shouldnot start smoking e-cigarettes.They will get addicted to nicotineand will be inhaling a potentiallytoxic mist.

     About Those Cigarettes

    By Peter Galvin, MD

The practice of yoga, onevery beneficial health tool, helps us to “unite” or balancethe body, mind and spirit. Howdoes this happen? Throughfocusing on the present be-ing on the mat, tuning in to abreathing practice and movingthe body into and out of pos-

es, bringing an almost suddenawareness of energy flowing inthe body from the crown of thehead to the tips of the toes.

There is another great addi-tional tool to arrive at this bal-ance. It is “quieting the mind.”Quiet your mind for five min-utes and you will begin to feelmore whole and balanced. Youdon’t even have to put a timeon it – just stay for as long as you want knowi ng that as youdo it every day, you’ll find that you will want to st ay longer!

Sit on a chair with the back

straight – perhaps a pillow be-hind the back – and feet plant-ed on the floor un der the knees, arms on armrests or resting on your thighs. Rol l t he shouldersup, back and down opening upthe heart-space. Take a deepbreath into the belly and let allof the air out of the mouth. Dothat two or three times. Close your eyes and just begin to no-tice the breath going in andgoing out. Follow the breath inthis way for as long a s you like. What ever thoughts come into your mind, j ust l et them go out– no inner dialogue – just fora few minutes. You can alsorepeat a word to yourself onthe inhale and exhale such aspeace or love or whatever you

want to br in g in to your being. This helps to center in and bepresent. After a while you canlet go of this word and just riseand fall with the breath inhala-tions and exhalations.

That inner dialogue couldget in the way. “I’ll go to thestore later. What do I need?”

etc. etc. Stop it at “I’ll go tothe store later.” Just let those words fl oat out of your head.Back to that later. Soon thethoughts will be somewhereout there and your mind qui-et. Even sounds that may bearound you will begin to bemuffled as you just breathe inand out nor mally.

Quieting the mind is notthe same as relaxing or sleep-ing. Relaxing, reading a book,or watching a movie is differ-ent. Even though you’re notdoing anything, your mind is

engaged with the content. Theidea is to just be – no talking, thinking, feeling, smelling, tasting, hearing, seeing. It isalso different from sleeping.

“ . . . The real value of medi-tation goes far beyond rest; itis how we awaken to our trueselves and attain our full hu-man potential. Sleep does notgive you that.” (Deepak Cho-pra, from “Chopra CenteredLifestyle”)

Give it a try for a couple of wee ks and n otic e a new a ware-ness of self and a feeling ofpeace.

May you be happy, may yoube free, may you let go of thingsthat do not serve you, may youhave inner peace.

For some time, accent walls were just walls you painted adifferent color. The look of a wood accent wall is comingback though. It adds characterto a room and lighting can bebuilt into it for a special touch. Accent walls can be made with 1 by4’s or 1 by 6’s. For a rustic look, re-claimed wood (as used in the pho-to) requires a little more skill. Us-ing different wood of the same sizesuch as pine and treated will give ita two toned look when stained.  You can choose to run the wood parallel to the floor or ona 45-degree angle (higher skilllevel required) for a more cre-ative look. Though you will losea few inches off the room, fram-ing your wall and adding somerecessed light is a ni ce touch. Aft er choosing the wood you want to use and picking the an-

gle, it’s time to start installing. You can nai l your wood to the

wall but be sure to use a lit tleliquid nail behind each piece.Starting at the ceiling, work your way down toward the floor.Complete each row before start-ing a new one. Alternate over-laps if you’re coming around acorner with your accent wall. When cutt ing your wood, besure to save your sawdust. Once your wall is complete you wil lbe mixing it with some Elmer’sglue to make a natural looking wood fil l for any spaces.  When you get to the bottomof your wall, you may find youcan’t fit a full piece in. This is why you started at the top. You wil l need to cut a piece long ways. Don’t worr y if it is not atight fit, that’s why we left thispart for the bottom. Once youput molding on, you will not seeany small space at the bottom.  Tell me what you would like toread about in future DIYer articles.

“Fetisov for the Devils playsit cross-ice, into the far corner.Matteau swoops in to intercept.Matteau behind the net, swingsit in front. He scores! Matteau!Matteau! Matteau! Stephane

Matteau! And the Rangers haveone more hill to climb, baby, and it’s Mount Vancouver! TheRangers are headed to the Fi-nals!”  Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!Or Plateau! plateau! plateau!  The first one made Rangerfans deliriously happy 21 yearsago. The second has been thedownfall of dieters for 21 cen-turies.  Why and what can we do toget over our Mount Vancouver wit hout quitti ng and gai ningall our weight back. It is a genu-ine fear of mine, so I did some

research and found some solidsuggestions on how to fight our“devil.”  Some really good advice Ifound is to make a change.  Change something. Any-thing. Do it now.  If (for example) you are eat-ing a moderate diet that ishigher in carbohydrates, eatless carbs and more protein.

As you are los ing wei ght , itcan be tempting to cut caloriestoo low to shed pounds faster.I think this has begun to hap-pen with me. Why is this not

good? There is a downside tothis technique: you start burn-ing muscle instead of fat forenergy and this gradually slows your met abo lism and a slow ingof your metabolism means thepounds take much longer tocome off.  What else can you (and I )do?  Focus on quality. Bustingthrough a weight-loss plateauis more than calories in andcalories out. Processed foods

won’t cut it an ymo re, t hus qual-ity whole foods like vegetables, beans, high-fiber fruits andlean proteins are needed for you r e ngi ne to bur n body fat.

Eat more protein. Proteinhas the highest thermic effecton food, meaning eating pro-

tein burns more calories dur-ing digestion. Protein also con-tains an amino acid, leucine, that numerous research stud-ies have identified as a potentcatalyst for burning body fat.  Truth be told, I mostly thinkof plateaus as a myth. My phi-losophy on weight-loss pla-teaus is that someone claim-ing to have hit one isn’t payingenough attention to detail. When you first sta rt a diet andfitness program, you makedrastic changes — maybe yougave up soda and candy and icecream. Your body responded to

that and you lost wei ght fast. Tocontinue to lose weight, you’llneed to create a consistent cal-orie deficit, which means you’llneed to start paying attentionto what really matters — howmany calories you’re consum-ing and how many you’re burn-ing. The only way to track thisaccurately is to count caloriesat every single meal. I knowthat it can be time-consum-ing and tedious, but this hasbeen proven again and againby researchers. A study in the Ame rican Jour nal of Prev ent ive

Medicine showed that the moreregularly a dieter kept a foodlog, the more weight they lost.

Above al l, do not get dis-couraged. Having a stretch where you r w eig ht los s s lows tonothing is a natural phenom-enon. You’re consuming fewercalories than you used to, so you r met aboli sm has sloweddown to conserve them. Keepin mind that, as long as youstick with your workouts andhealthy eating, you’ll typically

The Hotel Pierce on Fifth Avenue(now Beach 116th Street), in Rocka- way Park was built in late 1912 andopened for the 1913 season in theRockaways.

The full color postcard view seentoday was postmarked on June 2,1913 and many unwanted itemssuch as the spider web of powerlines, the overhead trolley powerlines, as well as utility & trolley poles

were washed out for photo clar-ity. The trolley tracks to Washington(now Memorial) Circle on the boule-vard (lower left) are also gone.

The multi-story beautiful brickbuilding contained 30 rooms, 8baths, and private suites with baths,6 bowling alleys, a large dining roomand heat during the winter months.

In 1918, with O. Greissefier asproprietor, the Pierce Hotel sportedan orange grove and futurist room(also known as a “character loung-er”, cabaret dancing and souvenirs

for the ladies! In May of 1919 the Pierce Hotel

was sold to brothers James and Cor-nelius Rogers, formerly from Ken-tucky, and renamed The Roger’s Ho-tel.

The building has changed its facea few times on the northwest cornerand in the last century it was knownas Maher’s Hotel for a time. Trolleytracks can be seen on Fifth Avenueat lower right heading towards New-port Avenue and the L.I.R.R. Station.

    Tiernan’s Windsor Hotel is shown

on the right.I wonder if that’s an orange tree infront of the Cabaret. I love the porch! The Park Theatre and the Firehousealso opened in 1913 as well as aNeveloff Store near the old Park Inn.

Also in 1913, the boulevard name was changed from Washington Av-enue to St. Marks Avenue.

Sheffield Avenue came later butin 1920 a continuous RockawayBeach Boulevard and streets withnumbers were adopted to end theconfusion.
