Th e biggest and longest run-ning New Year’s Day ocean plunge is Beach 145th Street at noon but plenty of other brave
souls jump in at various spots along the beach. Forecast is for a balmy 45 degrees. Hey, last year was 34.

Path From Belt To Bridge
Gets BrighterOne of the more harrow-
ing strips of pavement around Rockaway is a late-night drive down Flatbush Avenue be-tween the Marine Parkway Bridge and the Belt Parkway. Th e mile-and-a-half road is often pitch black once the sun sets, leaving drivers vulnerable to potholes, soon-to-be-road-kill, accidents, and a host of other dangers. To remedy the problem, the Brooklyn Depart-ment of Transportation has installed new LED streetlights. Th e change comes following eff orts to raise awareness of the situation from Assembly-man Phil Goldfeder and other community leaders. In Octo-ber, Goldfeder wrote to DOT Brooklyn Borough Commis-sioner Keith Bray to request the replacement of the lights after receiving numerous complaints
from area residents.Safe and eff ective driving
is especially important along that part of Flatbush Avenue, as it is one of only three major evacuation routes in the event of another natural disaster. Ac-cording to DOT offi cials, the in-stallation is part of a multi-year city-wide program to upgrade lighting infrastructure and re-duce energy use.
“So many families depend on Flatbush Avenue every day to get to work or school. Re-placing the streetlights along this busy thoroughfare will en-sure a brighter, safer commute and help prevent accidents,” Goldfeder said. “I give tremen-dous credit to the Department of Transportation for making our families’ safety a priority, especially during these dark winter months.”

New Year’s“Where we’re going, we don’t

In com-memoration of the fi lm and in their own look to the future, the House on the Rock Church, located at 91-88 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, will be host-ing a family-friendly Back to the Future-themed New Year’s Eve party beginning Th ursday at 9 p.m. 1950s, 1980s, Western, or “future” attire is required to refl ect both the original fi lm and its two sequels. New Year Welcomes a New Veterinarian
By Katie McFadden
Insuffi cient healthcare is a known problem on the pen-insula, and that even goes for pets. However that’s about to change for our furry friends. Pet owners will have more local options for their pets’ medical needs when Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services opens on Monday, January 4.
Following Hurricane Sandy, the Belle Harbor Animal Clinic on Beach 129th Street closed. Th e Animal Hospital of the Rockaways, located at 114-10 Beach Channel Drive has con-tinued to serve the peninsula
since 1977. Central Veterinary Associates says their Rocka-way Animal Hospital located at 1833 Cornaga Avenue re-mains open. Now there will be a more centralized location on the peninsula with Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services at 92-02 Rockaway Beach Boule-vard.
On January 4, Dr. Howard Hollander and Dr. Joanne Rug-giero will start a brand new venture, but they both bring many years of professional experience, including many years working together. Dr. Hollander, of Rockaway, has experience running a veteri-narian offi ce, as he owned his
own practice at the Bay Ridge Animal Hospital for 35 years. “I opened my practice in 1981. It started out as a one-man prac-tice and I grew it into a fi ve or six doctor practice and it was probably one of the largest practices in the metropolitan area with 6,000 square-feet of hospital and a staff of 35 at one time. It was a great learn-ing experience,” Dr. Hollander said. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) for about four years. Dr. Ruggiero, of Brooklyn, spent many years working with Dr. Hollander. “I started working for him when
I was a kid in junior high. I worked with him until I went to vet school,” Dr. Ruggiero said. She went back to working with Dr. Hollander at Bay Ridge An-imal Hospital after completing school in 2009 and most re-cently worked at Bensonhurst Veterinary Care for about three years.
Dr. Hollander slowly retired from the Bay Ridge practice but found that retirement wasn’t for him. “I just can’t see re-tirement. I love what I do and I’m very happy do it alongside Dr. Ruggiero,” he said. “When I fi nished vet school, I wanted to start a practice and he want-

ed to start a practice when he retired, so it was the perfect combo,” Dr. Ruggiero said. A longtime Rockaway resident, Dr. Hollander wanted to start a practice in his hometown. “I always thought of opening a place in the area and after Sandy, I thought it would be a great idea to give something back to the community because we desperately need another veterinary hospital in the area,” Dr. Hollander said. “Th ere’s an abundance of pets here and not many veterinary options,” Dr. Ruggiero said.
Dr. Hollander and Dr. Ruggie-ro came across the open space near Beach 92nd and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. “Th is loca-tion is the best. It’s centrally lo-cated on the peninsula. Th ere’s a lot of foot traffi c here. It’s right in the middle of everything and you have all of these great plac-es opening up in this area,” Dr. Ruggiero said. Construction began on the bare-bones offi ce in September with the help of contractor Shlomi Bros and the fi nishing touches are coming together. “Th e contractor has been a blessing. Th ey’re very creative and they’re the same contractors that worked on Rockaway Roasters next door. When you see the place from fl oor to ceiling, it’s going to be beautiful,” Dr. Hollander said. Th e doctors were hoping to open around Th anksgiving, but the construction process is nev-er a quick one, so they moved opening day to January 4. “Why not start the new year off with a new animal hospital?” Dr. Rug-giero said.
Once it opens, Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services will be a full service veterinary hos-pital and will off er surgeries, ultrasound capabilities, radiol-ogy, a dental facility with dig-ital dental x-rays, an ICU unit, an isolation unit for animals for infectious diseases and more. It will almost exclusively serve cats and dogs. Some may notice music playing within the offi ce, as the doctors say it has been found to be extremely benefi -cial for animal patients in re-gards to relieving anxiety and speeding up recovery time.
Th e doctors hope the business
will not only serve as a place to treat animals, but a place to properly educate pet owners. “I hope to provide an educa-tional atmosphere and encour-age people to spay and neuter their cats. We’ll off er tons of brochures and informational packets and we want people to feel free to stop by and ask us questions. We also want people to take their time and not feel rushed, but also not keep peo-ple waiting long,” Dr. Ruggiero said. Th e offi ce will encourage appointments, but won’t turn anyone away. “We’ll try to ac-cept walk-ins but we will also go by appointments and they’ll be lengthy so we can have lots of time with our clientele,” Dr. Hollander said, adding that a normal appointment will last about 30 minutes.
Th e offi ce will have a full staff , most of which are locals who are passionate about animals. “We have a really interesting, loving, happy staff from all dif-ferent walks of life. One guy is a retired fi refi ghter who always wanted to work with animals. He wanted to volunteer and we off ered him a job. One of our re-ceptionists has been working in fi nance, but she always wanted to work with animals as well,” Dr. Hollander said. “Th ey’re all very excited,” Dr. Ruggiero said.
Th e staff members aren’t the only ones who are excited. “We launched a Facebook page and the response on there has been overwhelming. I feel like the community is very excited to see us open,” Dr. Ruggiero said. “We’ve had very positive feedback from the community so far. I’ve had a lot of clientele from the Rockaways that came to me in Brooklyn and they’re excited that I’m opening here and some of my clientele from Brooklyn say they’ll be coming out here. I think we’ll be inun-dated with business from the get go, just based on the excite-ment, but we’ll see,” Dr. Hol-lander said.
Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services will be open six days a week, from 9 a.m to 7 p.m. Mondays through Th ursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m on Saturdays. For appointments, call 718-408-7287 (RBVS).

Momentum: 2015 Brought Many New Additions
By Katie McFadden
As noted in the Rockaway Times throughout 2015, Rock-away has the “Big Mo.” 2015 was the Year of Momentum. As the peninsula continues its recovery from Hurricane Sandy, many invested in the community by opening new businesses throughout the year. It was also a major year for recovery progress with the opening of the first phases of the boardwalk.
By Memorial Day weekend, the momentum was clear when Rockaway saw the re-turn of the boardwalk be-tween Beach 86th and Beach 97th Street. By July 4th, Rock-away had a full mile of board-walk for the summer when Phase II from Beach 97th to Beach 106th Street opened. The progress continues and the Parks Department prom-
ises we’ll have a continuous boardwalk from Beach 9th to Beach 126th by 2016, and by 2017, the entire brand new boardwalk will be complete.
Over the last few years, sev-eral new eateries have opened, especially in Rockaway Beach, sparking a Rockaway Renais-sance. That momentum con-tinued with the addition of even more varied cuisines. In February, the gourmet cof-fee shop, Rockaway Roasters opened up on Beach 92nd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Soon after, Rock-away got its first taste of Pe-ruvian cuisine when the Yrala sisters opened Chicks to Go in March. The new eatery at Beach 97th Street and Rock-away Beach Boulevard serves up rotisserie chicken, sides like rice and beans, chicken empanadas and more. A few months later in May, Terrence
Chen opened A+A Chinese Cuisine, bringing a different, authentic and healthy take on Chinese food to the peninsu-la, along with bubble tea. The new tenant of the old Irish Cir-cle finally arrived in August. Kelley Brooke and the Joseph family brought the Commu-nity House to the community. The interior of the building faced a major transformation, with the most notable aspect being a 3,000-sq-ft back pa-tio, covered by a retractable roof. “Opening a business in Rockaway has been a really positive experience. Most of our neighbors have been re-ally patient and supportive. We have seen a lot of positive changes in Rockaway Beach in the last year and we believe that 2016 will be very excit-ing,” Brooke said.
Rockaway got its first taste of frozen yogurt this year.
The Shannon sisters intro-duced the tasty frozen treat to Beach 108th Street when they opened Coastal Frozen Yogurt in August. They offer 10 self-serve flavors that rotate regu-larly, plus dozens of toppings to choose from. This fall, they also introduced Brooklyn Cupcakes. “We have been so grateful for such a positive response from the commu-nity. We are happy to bring something new and exciting to Rockaway,” Morgan Shan-non said. Not long after, Belle Harbor also got a taste of fro-zen yogurt when the Breen family opened Surf & Swirl on Beach 129th Street in Septem-ber. Surf & Swirl also offers self-serve frozen yogurt with 12 flavors and recently intro-duced gourmet hot choco-late and coffee. Frozen yogurt wasn’t the only tasty treat that

came to Beach 129th. A few doors down, Breezy Shakes & Dogs got its first storefront when Maria Binder opened in April. The business has long operated out of a food truck, usually stationed at Fort Til-den, but it expanded by going brick and mortar and offer-ing more than 170 flavors of milkshakes, plus snack foods like burgers, tacos, gyros and more. New treats also came 74-16 Beach Channel Drive in Arverne with the opening of the walk-up smoothie bar, Smoothie Haven, in June.
While eateries have led the business boom in Rockaway in recent years, 2015 was all about fashion and retail. Lola Star made her big Rockaway debut on Beach 116th Street. She’d already made a name for herself in Coney Island, but in May, Lola opened her Rocka-way shop featuring plenty of souvenirs, Rockaway apparel, roller skates and others fun odd and ends. “I knew that amaz-ing things were about to hap-pen in Rockaway in 2015 but the explosion of awesomeness that took place this past year exceeded my wildest expecta-tions! It was truly a mind-blow-ing year for Rockaway and Lola Star! I’m thrilled to be a part of these positive changes and honored to contribute my Lola Star magic to making Rockaway a more fabulous place!” Lola said, adding that the she feels like she’s been adopted into a “family. I’ve been so impressed by the wonderful way my shop was embraced and welcomed. I really feel like I found my home here in Rockaway. I’m so thankful for all the new friends I’ve met this year and grateful to be a part of your amazing community,” she said.
In June, Rockaway Beach had some brand new retail additions with its first vintage store Zingara Vintage and the upscale boutique Off Season along Rockaway Beach Boule-vard. Erin Silvers’ Zingara Vintage is a treasure trove of thrifty clothing spanning sev-eral decades, along with oth-er gifts, while Abra Boero’s Off Season features original, vi-brantly colored clothing and
more. Beach 129th Street also got some retail therapy with the addition of Polly & Esther and End of the A. Jamie Stuart Mcleod opened Polly & Es-ther boutique, which features trendy clothing for young women, in August. Beth Way-towich and Tara McKiernan introduced End of the A in the form of a mobile bou-tique based out of a large pink truck in 2014, but in Septem-ber, they went brick and mor-tar and opened up their first storefront. The store features various clothing, accessories, jewelry, bags and more.
The summer also saw some big changes. Shocking news came in the spring when it was announced that the pop-ular Rockaway Taco wasn’t coming back. However, a shift occurred. The co-own-ers started different ventures. Andrew Field brought his ta-cos to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club with the opening of Tacoway Beach in the summer, which he later transformed into a ramen shop in the fall with Noodle Beach. David Selig made use of the old Rockaway Taco location by opening Th e Summer Shift, which featured a rotation of Latin-American chefs throughout the summer. Across the street, he made a further impression when he brought real palm trees to the peninsula and opened a cultur-al event space called Th e Palms in late July. Riis Park also saw some huge changes this year with the introduction of Riis Park Beach Bazaar. Th e new event venue brought food, a bar, pop-up shops, games and live music to Bay 9, further boosting the popularity of the “People’s Beach” for the summer, and it became a year-round spot in autumn with the Wildfeast at Riis restaurant. “Th e inaugural season of Riis Park Beach Ba-zaar really surpassed our ex-pectations. Th e overwhelming positive response and support, especially from the Rockaway community, was awesome,” owner Belvy Klein said. “We are really looking to another awe-some season for 2016.”
Th is year, the Rockaway Times got a few neighbors at Rockaway Landing. In addi-tion to the Rockaway Times
offi ce and Rockaway Gliders, the bayside Beach 114th Street center saw the addition of Joe Keenan’s Law Offi ce in Janu-ary. In April, Andrew and Amy Dima brought Rockaway its first paddleboard shop with A-Team Paddleboarding. The duo also offers paddleboard-ing lessons. In May, Lana’s Loft moved from Beach 116th Street to Rockaway Land-ing, helping boost the look of Beach Channel Drive in the process. Lana’s lavender boutique features classic and trendy clothing for women of all ages.
Some other notable changes this year include CROM Phys-ical Culture, which opened its new, larger Beach 92nd Street location in January. After ma-jor renovations, Peninsula Library finally reopened in August and the Beach 108th Hockey Rink reopened in Oc-tober. The inaugural Posei-don’s Parade was held on the boardwalk in September and it was a big hit. Waldbaum’s is officially no more. The long-time supermarket closed in
November and another Stop & Shop took over shortly after. Some short-lived businesses included Beach Sliders and Rockaway Beach Ink, which both opened and closed with-in a few months this year.
Next year will be all about the rebirth. Longtime busi-nesses that were destroyed by Sandy are expected to come back in 2016. Bayview in Broad Channel is expect-ed to open in time for the Su-per Bowl. In Breezy Point, the new Bayhouse and the rebuilt Sugar Bowl should be open in time for Memorial Day week-end. Another much anticipat-ed comeback is the Harbor Light in Belle Harbor, where major developments have just begun.

Far Rock Teen Wins Big At National
PageantBy Dylan Watton
In August, Toni Edwards’ nerves were out of control as she walked on stage and be-gan her speech. Surrounded by seasoned professionals and at times looked down upon for where she came from, Ed-wards persevered and took the National America Miss state finals by storm, taking first runner-up in both the casual wear and spokesmodel por-tions, earning her a spot in the pageant’s national finals in Anaheim, California. The Far Rockaway native said that preparing for the competition this time was easier due to her newfound confidence.
“I practiced my person-al introduction in front of friends and family,” she said speaking from the Cayman Islands, where she spent part of youth. “My mom would ask me questions after questions [to prepare]. I also went to the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) and they pretend-ed to be judges and ask me questions to help practice as well.” Prior to journeying out to California Edwards raised sponsorships locally by going door-to-door to various Mott Avenue businesses. She also received money from friends, family, and peers at Fredrick Douglass Academy at the Far Rockaway High School cam-pus.
Once again Edwards would focus her speaking portions on mental illness, which she struggles with personally. “I spoke about my struggles with it but how I chose to be a victor instead if a victim,” she said. Edwards also modeled this time around for Mon Cheri, a company that designs prom dresses and wedding gowns. “They told us we couldn’t even smile! We were modeling the clothes, not ourselves.”
Edwards said that the na-
tional finals were a far more daunting task but her prior experience led her to be calm and prepared. “There were a lot of girls, 116 in my division alone. Some of them have been doing it for years and years. The stage was way big-ger.” There were 12 judges, one of them being Nina Davuluri, the Miss America (and Miss New York) winner from 2014. “I wasn’t judged this time as I was last time being that I was from Far Rockaway. I had to be good at what I did to be there. And I was motivated every day I was there. I wish every girl could have that experience in their lives.”
While Edwards didn’t win the grand prize of being Na-tional American Miss, she did win National Cover Girl due to her strong advocacy for men-tal illness awareness. “I hold the title from now until 2016. I go out and do community service projects and represent the pageant,” she explained. For all of her success Edwards thanked the RDRC, her school, the Far Rockaway teen library, and the Queens Law Associa-tion.
In the coming months Ed-wards will graduate from high school and is currently apply-ing to colleges. “

CALL AHEAD FOR FAST TAKE OUTHO
92-01 Roc92
By Rick Horan
2015 is nearly a wrap so it’s time for looking back and as-sessing what went right and what went wrong. It’s a time to refl ect, to learn and to make changes so that next year is better than the last.
From a transportation per-spective there is much room for improvement. Here are some year-end ideas for faster, safer and well, smarter trans-portation...1. Follow-up on a recommen-
dation by the American In-stitute of Architects to re-place the confusing gaggle of traffi c lights on the north end of Beach 116th Street and
Beach Channel Drive with a traffi c circle. Th is will help prevent rear end collisions involving cars turning into Duane Reade’s parking lot.
2. Demand a written guaran-tee from the Economic De-velopment Corporation that we will get the promised fer-ry in 2017 and with it, a boat and schedule designed for success.
3. Insist that the Department of Transportation replace their dumbest timed traffi c lights with actuated ones that stay green on the main road until a car, pedestrian or bike rider needs to cross.
4. All the elected offi cials who answered our questionnaire
agreed that Rockaway needs more transportation options and support the idea of a QueensRail feasibility study.
5. Like all important infra-structure projects of the past, QueensRail is a long-term project that will take leaders with courage and foresight to actively promote and support them. Sadly, Rockaway has but one.
6. DOT should be forced to stop operating in secrecy and post traffi c studies and other taxpayer-funded in-formation on their website.
7. Don’t implement Select BS on Woodhaven Boulevard, that slows down twice as many motorists as the bus
riders it purports to speed up. Instead, install proven, cost-eff ective intelligent traffi c lights that will speed up ALL traffi c, including buses.
8. Th e A train should be ex-press 24 hours a day. All local service should be pro-vided by the C train includ-ing all stops between Euclid Blvd and Leff erts Blvd.
9. All Eastbound A train ser-vice would terminate in Far Rockaway. Leff erts bound passengers must change at Rockaway Boulevard.
10. Th row the Rockaway Park Shuttle schedule in the gar-bage. It’s simple, the mo-ment the A train leaves the Broad Channel station the Shuttle should pull in right behind it.
11. Zero Vision in Action - Put a governor on the Mayor’s car that prevents it from going more than 25 MPH. After all, he’s twice as likely to kill someone if he’s going 30.
12. Right on Red should be per-mitted except where posted.
On the Road to 2016…Albeit a Very, Very Slow Road

Yellow Light for Red Lights
Dear Editor:I saw your piece about
speed cameras. Just in case you are also concerned about red light camer-as, I want to bring the following to your attention. Staff at the City of San Francisco MTA - which operates the City’s large red light camera program - recently published a report in which they looked at the effect the nine-teen-year-old program has had upon the incidence of broadside crashes with injury. While their report leads off with an impressive graph showing a dramatic decrease in crashes citywide, the intersec-tion-by-intersection charts for just the intersections having red light cameras tell a very different story: At the vast majority of those inter-sections, the red light camera(s) clearly had no beneficial effect.
Instead, the times when crashes dropped coincided with changes like making the yellows longer, add-ing an all-red interval (both of which are cheap for a city to do), the addi-tion of an arrow for left turns, or a general upgrade to the signal.
Jim Lissner
Readers: FYIDear Editor:I would like to let people
know that a police car sits in the driveway at the Shell station on Beach 116th street and Beach Channel
Drive just waiting to catch people on cell phones or without their seat belts. I would like to let people know that Beach Channel Drive across from the National Grid site gong westbound around Beach 109th Street the road is buckling and it is like driving over a bag of asphalt potato chips. I hope by putting this in the paper the De-partment of Transportation is put on notice and gets around to fi xing this sooner rather than later. With the road so close to the bay I bet it has been undermined and a dis-aster is waiting to happen. I would like to let people know that a lot of clothes bins are scams. Th ere is one near the old Key Food On Beach 105th Street and another one behind Stop & Shop (the old Waldbaum’s). Th e clothing and shoes put in these are sold in thrift shops and other places at a profi t for the scammers. Thank you.

13. Mandate DOT to warn drivers that they are ap-proaching a school zone, especially when there is a speed camera in use.
14. Get rid of the Cross Bay Bridge tolls permanently.
15. Demand that DOT put back all the lanes it stole from our roads over the past decade.
16. Forget about erecting tolls on the East River Crossing in in Midtown Manhattan. Motorists already “contrib-ute” hundreds of millions of dollars a year in mass transit subsidies.
17. Ask CB 14 to explain why chunks of Rockaway Free-way were de-mapped and given to a private developer.
18. Privatize the DOT.19. Expand Jamaica Bay
Greenway so bicycle rid-ers have a safe and scenic route through Rockaway.
20. Implement a system where emergency vehicles get all green lights.
21. Make MTA employees ride
the buses and trains so they feel our pain.
22. Tie MTA employees pay to wait-time and on-time performance.
23. Tie DOT employees pay to reducing average commut-ing time.
24. Invent an automatic, ve-hicle mounted system that will detect a shock from hitting a pothole and transmit the location di-rectly to the DOT for re-pair. Vehicles can also log these impacts for billing the City for repairs.
25. Some entrepreneur should buy one of those amphib-ious Duck Tour boats. It can ride through Rocka-way picking up people on the street like a bus and then drive right into the bay and off to lower Man-hattan and midtown.
I could go on but my head hurts. See you in traffi c next year. Got an idea for Smarter Transportation? Send your ar-ticle to: [email protected]

The Lazer Speaks2016! Time to Organize the Sock Drawer
By Lou Pastina
Happy New Year! Now is the time to review the last year and to organize for the coming year. And what bet-ter time than now to organ-ize the sock drawer. Oh come on, don’t tell me you don’t do this every year. You know how some socks stay with their mate for life, and well there are those others, that just can’t seem to stick with the one who brought them to the dance.
It’s true, we all try to put socks into the washer and dryer together, but some-how when they go back into the sock drawer, there are some who are always single! Why is that? I honestly don’t know. I once thought that the kids were raiding Dad’s sock drawer, and would search their rooms for lone socks. Occasionally I would reunite a lost pair. Mostly it was done in vain. Can’t blame the mer-maid, she has flippers.
So it must be that some of these socks have minds of their own and drift off with other more exciting socks than the ones who look like them. That’s cool, I’m all for diversi-ty, but I can be kind of a stick-ler when it comes to wearing matching socks. Most of my socks come in two colors, ei-ther black or white. So that makes me pretty simple mind-ed when it comes to socks.
But this is the time of year when I dive into the sock drawer. Unfortunately for some of them, I determine that after a year of being on their own, and not being able to connect with any of their brethren, they must move on. And so, I remove them from the drawer for good. Once this is done I move on to the t-shirts.
You know living in Rocka-way means that you accumu-late t-shirts like shells wash-ing up on the shore. There are more events at this beach that provide a t-shirt as a to-ken of your support than you can shake a stick at. And once a year it’s time to go through the t-shirt bin and decide who stays and who goes. This takes a bit of discipline be-cause it’s hard to remember if the purple Graybeard Rocka-way Run t-shirt was this year or last year, or five years ago. I never won a championship in the Graybeard basketball league but somehow wound up with a classic long sleeve
Tee. I never wore it because I figured someone would say that I never won a champion-ship, and they would be right. I know this must be a terrible dilemma for my friend Bugsy because I believe he has the most extensive t-shirt collec-tion on the peninsula!
The most difficult decision however awaits me. Having retired from the active work-force in 2014, I no longer drag my carcass out of bed at 5 a.m. every morning and put on the uniform, the suit. Over the years I have accu-mulated quite a few of these uniforms, in different colors, styles, and unfortunate-ly, sizes. Having moved on to consulting, I discovered consultants don’t wear suits, they are much more casual, and so I had to hit The Gap and Banana Republic to up my casual game. But what to
do with the suits? I mean, do I harbor some psychological longing that one day I will return to that “suit world” again? Don’t I have the same discipline that I apply to socks and t-shirts? Why can’t I get rid of the suits? Now granted the socks and t-shirts don’t cost as much as a suit, even though I was a fan of Sy Syms; God I loved that family. Can’t it be that I just can’t accept that I am no longer in that world, and have moved on to whatever it is I do now! I mean, writ-ers don’t wear socks, no less suits.
Yes, its time to clean out all the drawers and closets, and start the year anew. Be fearless I tell myself….. but maybe I will hang on to a few suits, the purple Graybeard t-shirt, and at least one single sock for Auld Lang Syne.

ForOver
60Years
By Peter Galvin, MD
The human body has a num-ber of defense mechanisms against infections. Coughing is one of them. When faced with a lung infection that produces mucus in the lungs coughing helps to clear the mucus from the lungs. Another defense mechanism is fever. By raising its body temperature the in-fectious agent may be killed or compromised. Our body raises its temperature by chills and shakes – the muscle quivering and spasms create heat. Then when the body detects that its temperature is too high it ini-tiates sweating which lowers
the body temperature – when the sweat evaporates it cools the skin (the same reasoning applies to exertion and exer-cise).
Recently I read an article in a medical journal about a 75-year-old woman who pre-sented to a clinic with com-plaints of a persistent cough and shortness of breath. The article described her as be-ing very polite, calm, well-groomed and well-dressed. A CAT scan of her chest revealed scattered small nodules and a culture of her sputum grew non-tuberculous mycobac-teria (mycobacterium tuber-culosis causes its namesake).
She was diagnosed with Lady Windermere syndrome.
Lady Windermere syndrome was first described more than 20 years ago. It gets its name from the lead character in an Oscar Wilde play Lady Win-dermere’s Fan. The play is a satire of the strict morals and polite manners typical of Victorian Great Britain. The typical patient with this syn-drome is usually a thin, lean,
well-mannered older woman who voluntarily suppresses her cough out of politeness. Suppression of the cough is thought to lead to the devel-opment of a lung infection by allowing secretions to pool in the airways. One study found that 95 percent of the patients were women who were tall and lean. Many had scoliosis and mitral valve prolapse and the average age was 60. Over time if untreated the syndrome may lead to lung damage and more serious lung issues.
The causative agent (M avi-um-intracellulare) is found pretty much everywhere in the environment including soil
and water. Treatment is direct-ed at eliminating the organism before lung damage occurs and, like with tuberculosis, multiple antibiotics are used because of the high risk of re-sistance to just one drug.
So the moral of the story is if you feel the need to cough or feel that you may have a lung infection, cough away (of course, see your doctor too) and don’t hold back. Please always remember to cover your mouth with your elbow while coughing as well!
This column is published biweekly. Questions and com-ments may be sent to [email protected].

Rockaway Times Online Year In Review: Sunsets, Mets, And All The Rest
By Dylan WattonFacebook founder Mark Zuck-
erberg may not be giving away his billions to just anybody who shares a faux status, but regardless the Harvard grad’s maligned yet be-loved creation of Facebook is an indelible part of many of our daily lives. More than 1.18 billion people use the social networking service. Facebook’s reach and popularity has changed the way companies market products and interact with their customers. Journalism is no exception, and the Rockaway Times experienced widespread growth in its online presence in 2015. Just last week, Th e Rockaway Times received its 5000th “Like.”
Of all the stories and pictures we posted, the paper’s biggest hit by far was Assistant Editor Katie Mc-Fadden’s 13 second video stunner of a pristine Rockaway sunset on Beach 127th Street. “I’ve traveled a lot and I’ve always been attract-ed to the beauty of [sunsets]. It’s an amazing natural event,” she said. “I was sitting at home on a Sun-
day [November 22nd] and I saw my house start to light up and then the other houses on my block too. I rode my bike down to the beach and started taking pictures and a 13-second video. It was one of those sunsets that took your breath away. Th e colors were amazing, the deep reds, the purple sky.” Th e video, panning over a cotton-can-dy heaven with waves and a single fi shing pole in the foreground, was viewed over 66,000 times, shared nearly 1,500 times, and reached over 240,000 people. Th e accom-panying photograph garnered 1,237 likes and made the cover of this year’s Th anksgiving issue. “We don’t even have 200,000 people in Rockaway. It’s nice to be able to share that with other people,” Mc-Fadden said.
McFadden had another grand slam post just over a month earlier. As the New York Mets made their unexpected run to an eventual World Series appearance, the city and Rockaway got swept up in Mets fever. On October 17, the night that
the National League Champion-ship Series (NLCS) against the Chicago Cubs began, McFadden got inspired to show off her Mets pride and created a sand-sculpture of the team’s logo. “I used sand and my hands and blue-and-orange colored hairspray that you get right around Halloween,” she said. Th e mini-Mets mountain gathered 559 likes and 115 shares as Daniel Mur-phy and the rest of the team swept the Cubs to win their fi rst NL pen-nant since 2000.
All news can’t always be feel-good, however, and some of the Rockaway Times’ most popular posts involved the loss of locals and moments of refl ection. Justin Zemser, a 20-year-old Naval Acad-emy Midshipman from Rockaway Beach, tragically died in an Amtrak derailment outside Philadelphia on May 12. Th e paper’s story and photo of Zemser got 617 likes and 548 shares, along with hundreds of comments sending thoughts and prayers to his family. On October 20, police offi cer and Far Rockaway
native Randolph Holder was shot and killed while on duty in East Harlem, and the Times’ photo of him had 470 likes and 331 shares. A video of a fi reboat display at Trib-ute Park on September 11th had over 3,200 views and information about the Dylan Smith paddle-out celebrating the local hero got near-ly 200 likes.
Unsurprisingly a couple of ce-lebrity cameos got a lot of play online. Th e Times shared a photo from the band U2’s Instagram ac-count of drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. pointing at a sign on Beach 116th Street that got 531 likes and 149 shares. In April, the paper ran the story (written by columnist Beef-chip) of Charlie Heeran, who lost his life on 9/11 while working for Cantor Fitzgerald. Heeran’s moth-er Barbara met Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player of all time, and gave him a mass card of Char-lie, who was a big fan; Gretzky said he would keep the card for the rest of his life, and true to his promise

Other big posts for the paper included the closing/rebirth of Rockaway Taco/Tacoway Beach (over 75 shares), videos of surfers and sledders braving the cold in January (nearly 8,000 views com-bined), and photos and videos of
Christmas festivities at the Little North Pole and St. Francis de Sales (together having over 430 likes and 8,600 views).
“2015 has been a great year,” McFadden said. “We started in 2014 and we had a good run the last half that year. We’ve grown in size and now we have a lot more advertisers. We’re very grateful for our advertisers and readers. I think we’ll see more big things to come in 2016.” Even without Zucker-berg’s billions, the future is bright in Rockaway.

Women of the Peninsula: Marilyn Harvey of Breezy Tour & TravelBy Katie McFadden
Who runs the peninsula? Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated by fe-males, or female co-owners. And they deserve recognition. As part of an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profi l-ing local female entrepreneurs each week. Th is week is Marilyn Harvey, owner of Breezy Tour & Travel.
Looking for an adventure? Let Marilyn Harvey be your go-to guide. Since 2007, Har-vey, of Breezy Point, has helped residents meet their travel needs, providing ways for people to explore beyond the peninsula. Many may have booked bus tours to the Philadelphia Flower Show, various casinos, wineries in Long Island, trips to Niaga-ra Falls, Nashville or beyond with Harvey, many of which are guided by Harvey her-self. She also helps book river cruises, regular cruises and detailed vacation packages to places like the Caribbean and Ireland. Harvey makes traveling as convenient as possible, booking everything from hotels, to bus opera-tors, attractions and more, providing a full itinerary and a guaranteed good time. She makes sure to be on call at all times to help any of her cli-ents through things that may not be part of the plan, like sudden illnesses while on va-cation.
Harvey’s career path itself has been an adventure. While in college, she worked as an EMT for the National Parks Service, but she always had the travel bug. “I always want-ed to travel, but my father got sick and we didn’t have money, so I needed to figure out how I could travel. I got a bunch of brochures and saw there was this cross-country tour that was led by a tour guide, so I called the com-
pany, Aventours, and asked how I could be a tour guide. It just so happened that they were interviewing for a training trip, so I went into Manhattan the next day and I was accept-ed,” Harvey said. “It was this three-week training trip where you take people camping across America and we learned how to set up a campground and cook for 40 people and divide chores and provide information about nearby attractions. We start-ed off in New York and went to D.C. and Florida and then to California. I was at the top of my class by the time it was done.”
Harvey was planning on continuing cross-country tours, but she was encour-aged to start working in the restaurant business. “It was getting close to the holi-days and someone told me to go work for restaurants as I could make a lot of money doing coat-check. I went to Tavern on the Green in Man-hattan and I was hired on the spot for front desk and coat check work. I started working for the general manager and within a year I became man-ager and was working for the owners doing product devel-opment and design. I helped bring the retail store up from $350,000 to $1 million in a year. I had a great career at Tavern on the Green. From there I went on to Madison Square Garden and was part of a team to open up their first team store and run the mer-chandise concession,” Har-vey said. By working at MSG, she developed an interest in production from seeing the many concerts and events at the venue. She continued on a product development path, helping to open a midtown restaurant called the Motown Café and then helped open a retail store for Radio City Music Hall. She then started working in the film and tele-vision industry and became a production assistant, doing on-air promos for ABC and CBS
and shows like Th e Amazing Race, soap operas and she also worked on movies. “I’ve had an interesting career path,” she said.
Her career once again changed due to an injury. “I had gotten hurt and I was in a lot of pain and had diffi culty moving and I didn’t want to subject an employer to the fact that there would be days where I wouldn’t be able to come into work. So, I went back to my travel roots. Travel was something I loved and I thought it was a good way to look past the limitation that I had and start a business that I could control myself. Owning my own business gave me the opportunity to make my own schedule and have more con-trol over my day,” she said. She started Breezy Tour & Travel in 2007, opening up an offi ce near the ball field at 61 Point Breeze Ave.
Harvey felt there was a need to bring a good travel ser-vice to the peninsula. “I’ve traveled all over the world, but Breezy Point has always been my home. I wanted to provide a service here where
if someone spent a year, or maybe five years saving up for a vacation and it might be their only vacation, I wanted to make sure it would be the best vacation they could get,” she said. Harvey runs the business alone but says she has had great support from the beginning. “My broth-er and sister have always been extremely supportive and when I first started, the Batista family had a mov-ing company and they pro-vided me with furniture for my office. I’ve had longtime customers. The Rasmussen family was my first customer and I planned the first group cruise for Janet Corcoran and they’ve continued to plan a cruise through me every year since. I’ve been lucky in the support that I’ve had from my clients,” she said.
The Internet age has pro-vided some challenges for Harvey, but she does what she can to keep up with the competition. “Breezy Tour & Travel is changing to meet the current demand of the climate. I try to price match when I can and I offer things like cancellation insurance, upgraded hotel rooms and personalized assistance if there’s a problem during a trip. I also like to add person-al touches like putting little gifts in travel documents or surprising people with some-thing at their hotel room. When people come back and tell me that their trip was awe-some and that they appreciat-ed all of the details and they say that I’m good at my job, it is the best feeling. If I can make people happy and they had a good time, it makes me happy,” Harvey said.
If interested in booking a va-cation, or seeing what Breezy Tour & Travel has to offer, call 718-945-3989 or check out www.breezytourandtravel .com.

Far Rock Synagougue Struggles To Bounce
Back From Sandy
A local synagogue that has history dating back almost a century is turning to the pub-lic for help after not being able to rebuild following sub-stantial damage from Hur-ricane Sandy. Congregation Shaare Zedek, located at 315 Beach 30th Street, opened in in 1918 and moved to its cur-rent location in 1973, accord-ing to a CBS New York report. The building was flooded during Sandy and the con-gregation received no money from FEMA or their insurance company, nor did they have
flood insurance. “It’s sad, this was a thriv-
ing congregation — a brand new floor was put in a few months before Sandy,” Rab-bi Yussie Beirach said in the report. Shaare Zedek still de-livers food to local seniors and would like to establish a food bank once the building is rebuilt. Beirach said the congregation is looking for around $200,000 to complete repairs. Any inquiries or do-nations can be sent to the rab-bi at [email protected] or call him at 646-492-4136.

Well, it’s certainly been a challenging year for the RBSA and general Rockaway surf community trying to expand some surfi ng beaches in the summer time of 2016 and mov-ing forward. It’s generally in the NYC Parks Department’s hands now to OK what the CB14 has passed, based in part on what distinct community groups de-clared, and in a few areas, what the actual residents wanted,
which was, thankfully, new surf beaches to grow that area eco-nomically.
As of this writing, I’m in glo-rious Taghazout, Morocco, the land of right points as they call it. While Taghazout has been on the Moroccan map for millennia, it’s really only been the last ten or fi fteen years its’ really blown up. Th ere are literally tens of thou-sands of acres dedicated to new construction all based on the in-fl ux of surfers to this area, both new and veteran.
In the town of Taghazout, surf shops and board/wetsuit re-pair stores out number the res-taurants and cafes combined. Another fact, 80 percent of the
hotels are geared specifi cally for surf-related tourism. One thing that really strikes you here is the openness and friendliness of the locals.
Th ough obviously an Arabic country, the French infl uence is huge and that language is fairly predominant, as is the presence of French tourist surfers. In the few days here, we have had all manner of swells, but the inter-esting bit is, if one place isn’t
working, a 20-30 km drive either north or south will net you some amazing waves.
Today Taghazout is about 5-6’, a local tipped me off that Immou-sane, a mile-long point break 45 minutes north is double the size, so off we go and hopefully with some pics to come.
We’re staying at La Source, a great fi ring right-hander smack dab in the middle between An-chor Point and Killers. My son and I surfed Killers yesterday at 8-10’, but with the current, long paddle out and 10-foot tidal swings, getting waves was a chal-lenge, but when you got one you could get a 200-300 yard ride of pure stoke.
Th ere is an old Irish curse which goes something like this: “May those that love us love us and those that don’t love us may God turn their hearts. If he can’t turn their hearts, may he turn their an-kles so that we may know them by their limping.”
I mention this because somewhere along the line dur-ing 2015 the Good Lord must have encountered some dif-ficulty in “turning” my heart because I recently sustained what I initially thought was nothing more than a badly sprained ankle. Grace and the girls took one look at it and stated in unison, “That looks bad, why don’t you go to the doctor and get an X-ray?”
Needless to say, my ex-Ma-rine male ego chafed at the thought of seeking medical attention for such a slight ail-ment and I stoically (stupid-ly?) assured everyone that the condition would take care of itself over a week or so. After hopping around on it for al-most two weeks the pain and swelling had yet to subside and late last week my family staged yet another interven-
tion similar to the one sever-al weeks ago when they made me seek medical attention for what I claimed was a “slight cold” and ultimately turned out to be pneumonia.
One doctor visit and several X-rays later, my attending phy-sician looked at me somewhat quizzically and stated, “I have good news, bad news and then a serious question. The good news is that you didn’t sprain your ankle but unfortunately, the bad news is that you broke your foot in two places. My question is what the hell took you almost two weeks to get in here to have it looked at?” The physician’s assistant present in the area started laughing and turned and walked out of the examining room stating, “It’s not his foot that needs an X-ray, it’s his head!”
Of course, it only got worse from that point as it was ex-plained to me in detail that the fractured bones had attempted to knit over the past two weeks but were prevented from do-ing so by my bouncing around on the broken foot like a luna-tic. What is even worse are the vociferous chidings that ema-nate from my beloved family (“Told you so….If you were a dog we would have to put you to sleep…Look, it’s Gomer Pyle on crutches!”…etc.)
As 2015 draws to a close this week I am armed with crutch-es, a cane, a soft boot and a myriad of other accessories that can be found in the Frac-tured Foot First Aid for Dum-mies text book as I await my initial appointment with a po-diatrist in the initial days of 2016 armed with the knowl-edge that someone, some-where, now knows I’m ap-proaching because I’m limping like a square wheel!

ROCKAWAY TIMES

By Helen Kilgallen
Planting the seed to trans-form in 2016 is a good start. We all want to change in a positive way and what bet-ter time to do this than in the New Year. The problem is we set ourselves up for failure by having unreasonable goals. We cannot change everything we do regularly but rather we can take small steps and be consistent. Patience and consistence! We live in a so-ciety that expects instant re-sults however abrupt chang-es are rarely lifelong. Set small goals and work towards
them. If there is a setback, accept it and start over.
Willpower is key. Your inner strength will be important for you to take action and handle any discomfort. Temptations will be there and you must learn to overcome them. The most difficult times will be in social environments and your willpower will prevail if you focus on your intentions. Self-discipline is the compo-nent. Whatever you choose to do, deliberate actions are necessary. “Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success.” ~Swa-
mi Sivananda You have a whole year to
live up to your New Year’s Resolution. Maybe you want to improve or change your diet, do more yoga, meditate on a regular basis, run, spin or swim better. Whatever it is, start small with little expec-tations. Never judge yourself for slipping. It happens and you are human thank God! Most people set high expec-tations and when they fail they give up or are very hard on themselves. Small victo-ries on a regular basis are key. Set your goals too high and you will suffer if for some reason it doesn’t work out.
Welcome the New Year with joy and happiness. Be-gin by writing down your expectations. Yes, write it down so you can read it and have a friendly reminder of some things you are work-ing on. Writing things on paper makes it real and per-sonal. Try not to have too many things on your agenda. Change happens slowly. Be consistent and changes will
happen naturally. Be authen-tic and know that nothing is perfect in life. To be hu-man is a gift, there is no such thing as perfect. We are here to support and guide one an-other. Everyone has some-thing to offer. Accept, be kind and do the right thing. Find your “thing you want to do” and work towards it.
Writing down New Year Resolutions makes it real. Here are mine:
1. Write this column a day before the deadline
2. Start running again3. Take more yoga classes4. Eat more vegetables 5. Be patient and kind with
my husband and children
Ok that’s enough for one year, hopefully I get to make more next year. Never be afraid to change. Every day is a brand new day to start over. How lucky are we? May you be happy, healthy and truly enlightened. See you in 2016.

Buildup in a dryer vent can easily start a fi re. It can also cause the lint to back up into your dryer and lead to expen-sive repair bills to have the dryer opened and cleaned. Th e photo below supplied by my friend Tom of Tom’s Appliance Repairs in Chicago shows how bad the lint can back up into your dryer. Th is kind of lint backup in your dryer can easily cause a fi re in the unit.
I fi nd it is most common-ly recommended to have your dryer vent cleaned at least once a year, however for dryers with heavy use I would recommend twice a year.
To properly clean your vent, you will need to remove the vent from the rear of the dryer and
check that there is no back up into the unit. Th en using a vent brush, clean out the vent hose. For longer runs, you may need to open the vent line and clean it from more than one point.
If the dryer vent line is so bad-ly coated that you can’t clean it or if it is kinked and/or restrict-ing the fl ow of the lint, replace the vent line.
Be sure to check where the vent exits the house. Make sure it is free from lint and properly covered to prevent small ani-
Keeping Your Dryer Vent Clean
and Safe Walnut Ginger Salmon
By Sharon FeldmanPantry ingredients combine for a delightful marinade that lightly glazes this tender, moist salmonServes: 41 tablespoon brown sugar1 tablespoon Dijon mustard1 tablespoon soy sauce1 teaspoon ground ginger4 skinless salmon fillets (4 ounces each)¼ cup chopped walnutsIn a large, resalable bag, combine the brown sugar, mustard, soy sauce and ginger; add the salmon. Seal the bag and turn to coat. Refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning occasionally.Drain and discard the marinade. Place salmon on a foil lined baking sheet coated with co oking spray. Broil 4-6 inches from the heat 7-9 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork, sprinkling with walnuts during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
mals and birds from getting in. A screened vent cover is highly recommended.
If moving the dryer is too much for you or the outside vent is too high for you to clean properly, it is time to call some-one in to do it for you. Should you fi nd the lint already backed up into your dryer, don’t take chances. Call someone in to re-move the covers from the dryer and properly clean it.
Remember, there are more than 15,000 fi res a year in the US due to lint build up in dry-er vents and dryers. Don’t risk your home and family over something that can easily pre-vented.
