ABOUT US

Unbound is the creation of three writers. We started the company because we believed there had to be a better deal for both writers and readers. The Unbound website hosts a curated list of projects. Authors share the ideas for the books they want to write. If enough people support the book by pledging for it in advance, we produce a limited, high quality subscribers’ edition. Regular editions and e-book editions are then produced and sold with the widest possible, international distribution. We’re using the internet to build each writer a network of fans. Publishing this way means readers are no longer passive consumers of the books the buy, but can participate in their publication. Authors are free to write the books they really want and receive a fairer return for doing so: half the profit their books earn.

The Author

Raymond Briggs was born in London in 1934, and studied at Wimbledon School of Art and the Slade School of Art, London. He is one the most innovative and popular author-illustrators of classic works such as Father Christmas (1973), Father Christmas Goes on Holiday (1975), Fungus the Bogeyman (1977), The Snowman (1978) When the Wind Blows (1982) The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman (1984). Pure

Rose Bretécher Tragicomic memoir of coming to terms with an of obsessive compulsive disorder that brings instrusive, inappropriate and unwanted thoughts.

Pure is the true story of Rose Bretécher’s life and struggle with ‘Pure O’, a rampant, little-known Obsessive Compulsive Disorder whereby people experience intrusive ‘unthinkable’ thoughts, often of a sexual or violent nature. It tracks her tragicomic decade-long path to redemption, from the moment she was first seized by incessant sexual mental images to her eventual recovery through therapy, acceptance and love. Rose describes the fear, the confusion and the obsessive questioning of her identity, as well as the compulsive search for an answer, including her driving across the world in a double-decker bus.

Eventually, after stepping back from the iron railings of a snow-swept balcony in east London, Rose learns to find joy in the insurmountable truth that when it comes to who we are, there are no neat conclusions.

Ultimately, Pure is about uncertainty and insecurity, finding beauty in oddity, and embracing the unfathomable weirdness of the human mind.

The Author

Rose Bretécher is a twenty-eight year-old writer living in London. Pure is her first book. Rights: World English Extent: 224pp Publication: September, 2015

Letters To A Beekeeper

Alys Fowler and Steve Benbow A beautifully photographed, insect-identifying, honey-tasting, wax-dripping, bee-keeping, recipe-including, how-to book of a sort never seen before.

This the story of how, over the course of a year, Alys, the Guardian gardening writer, learns how to keep bees; and Steve, the urban beekeeper, learns how to plant a pollinator-friendly garden.

Part beautifully designed book, part manifesto, this collection of engaging letters, emails, texts, recipes, notes and glorious photos creates a record of the trials, tribulations, reward and joys of working with, rather than against, nature. And along the way, the reader picks up a wealth of advice, tips and ideas for growing food, making food and keeping pollinators happy and fed.

For lazy gardeners to novice beekeepers (an everyone in between).

The Authors

Steve Benbow is a nomadic beekeeper and spends most of the summer moving his bees away from monocultures, citing them on flint beaches or purple moorland. Random House published his first book The Urban Beekeeper last June.

Alys Fowler likes growing food and flowers. Her flowers are a bit too far away for Steve’s bees, so she’s keeping the pollinators of Birmingham happy instead. She has written four books, presents gardening programmes on TV (including her own show The Edible Garden) and writes for the Guardian. She likes wild swimming, riding bikes and cooking.

Second Hand Stories

Josh Spero

The amazing stories behind the author’s second hand books and the people who owned them.

Every second-hand book has a story. Each person of them has a life filled with love, loss, drama and conflict, sometimes on a grand international scale, other times intensely personal. Those are exactly what Josh Spero found in the lives of the people who used to own his books.

As Josh studied Latin and Greek at university, he went through all his second-hand Classics books, examining the hand-written names and bookplates for clues. What he came up with, after he had tracked down eleven previous owners, was a set of astonishing personal and public stories from around the world, covering a century of triumphs, disasters and intimacies. Tom Dunbabin was a Classics scholar who became a spy, leading the resistance against the Germans in Crete in the Second World War. Peter Levi was a poet and a priest who fell in love with a friend’s wife while at the same time subverting Greece’s military dictatorship. Other tales are more intimate and domestic. All offer testament to the enduring role of the classics and the interconnection of books and people’s lives, the passing down of literature and ideas from one to the next through time and human experience.

The Author Josh Spero has been the editor of Spear’s magazine since 2010, covering everything from finance and philanthropy to art and luxury. He is also Tatler’s art critic and has written for The Independent The Guardian, The Times, The Sunday Times and The Economist.

Sussex Devils

Mark Heal Real life horror story that examines the devastating effects of Satanic hysteria in the 1980s. 'Heartbreaking and breathtaking’. Clive Barker, author of Hellraiser This is a wonderfully written work of true detection that reveals how we can hide the past from ourselves to devastating effect.

Sussex Devils recounts the author’s quest to unearth the true story of Derry Knight, a notorious career criminal and confidence trickster. In 1985 Knight conned over £1m from establishment figures to combat Satanism. Knight claimed to be a fugitive from a Satanic cabal that reached the heights of the British government.

The events of this high profile and salacious case, took place in the village where Marc Heal grew up. Knight was even aided in his endeavour by the Reverend John Baker, a family friend.

Through his investigation, Marc Heal unearths the childhood history he himself has repressed and is forced to confront the reason for the blank: in December 1985, his parents and an elder from their Church, all evangelical Christians of some fanaticism, had forced him to undergo an exorcism to drive out the demons they believed possessed him. And so began a life wrestling with very real psychological demons that it took Marc decades to destroy.

The Author

Marc Heal was a leading member of the 1990s industrial music scene and is a TV producer and composer whose music featured in the film Mortal Kombat , the tv series The Sopranos and in several best-selling games like Gran Turismo, Wing Commander and Command and Conquer. He currently lives in Singapore. Rights: World Extent: 426pp Publication: October 2015

Dead Babies And Seaside Towns

Alice Jolly

Powerful, savagely personal account of the search for an alternative way to create a family. Beautifully written with a novelist’s eye.

The world of dead babies is a silent and shuttered place. You do not know it exists until you find yourself there.

When Alice Jolly’s second child was stillborn and all subsequent attempts to have another baby failed, she started to consider every possible option, no matter how unorthodox. As she battles through miscarriage, IVF and failed adoption attempts, Alice’s only solace from pain is the faded charm of Britain’s crumbling seaside towns. Finally, this search leads her and her husband to a small town in Minnesota and two remarkable women who offer to make the impossible possible. Although frequently harrowing in its detail, the book is shot through with humour and full of hope.

Profits from the book will be donated to SANDS, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity.

The Author

Alice Jolly is a novelist, playwright and teacher of creative writing. Her two novels, What The Eye Doesn’t See and If Only You Knew are published by Simon and Schuster and she was the winner of the 2014 VS Pritchett Memorial.

Escape Everything

Robert Wringham For anyone who has thought about escaping the drudgery of modern office life.

You do not have to go to work. It is not required of you by law, nor is it vital to your personal well being, a civil society, or even a flourishing economy. Working full time does not contribute to the good life and is likely in fact to detract from it.

80% of us hate our jobs, yet we reluctantly spend 87,000 hours at work before dying. Some of us even die at work. We also spend 5,000 hours sitting in trains and buses and traffic jams, getting to and from work, and an untold number of hours preparing for, worrying about, and recovering from work. Despite all this toil most of us are in debt. Escape Everything reveals the mechanisms of this trap, explores the alternatives to it, and collects stories of escape attempts. Finally Escape Everything shows how we might break free from work, consumerism, from loneliness and despair.

The Author Robert Wringham is a writer and performer who lives in Glasgow and Montreal. He’s the editor of New Escapologist, a small-press magazine for people with escape on the brain. The magazine has seen contributions from Alain de Botton, Richard Herring, Ewan Morrison, Tom Hodgkinson, Leo Babauta and Luke Rhinehart. As a performer he does stand-up comedy; as a humourist and essayist, he’s written for the Idler, Playboy, HiLoBrow, the British Comedy Guide, Splitsider and a hundred other magazines and websites.

The Irish Pasha

Louise Foxcroft The extraordinary life of RG Gayer Anderson, a tale of drugs, race, class, family, sex, tomb robbing, two wars, and a collapsing empire.

Based on the journals of RG ‘Pum’ Gayer-Anderson, this historical biography tells of a riotous double life as the British Empire began to decline.

Pum was an Egyptologist, poet, surgeon, soldier, psychic, noted collector and tomb-robber. As a child in the 1880s he crossed an unforgiving America with his entrepreneurial and eccentric Irish parents. As a man he adopted Arab life and immersed himself in it as colonials seldom did; he saw ghosts and witches, sailed the Nile, wrestled Turks and crocodiles, fought at Gallipoli, smoked opium, performed surgery in the desert, gathered and cared for artefacts and boys in his Cairo home. His journals are filled with frank accounts of his exploits and of the illustrious and colourful people who wandered by: Lawrence of Arabia, Gordon, Kitchener, Conan-Doyle, Eric Gill, and Stephen Spender, among others..

As a British Official in Cairo, Pum needed to keep up a respectable front knowing all the while how dangerous his true inclinations and desires were. Pum cherished the ‘peach-cheeks’ of young girl-boys. In order to live the life he wanted he was forced to deceive and manipulate others – including the tragic woman who bore him a son, ‘by arrangement’.

The Author

Louise Foxcroft is a medical historian. She has published three non-fiction books including Hot Flushes, Cold Science: A history of the modern menopause (Granta, 2009), which won the Longman/History Today Book of the Year Award 2009 and Calories and Corsets: A history of dieting over 2,000 years (Profile, 2012). She has written for The Times, Independent, Guardian, New Scientist, London Review of Books, Erotic Review and the New Humanist.

The Power of Soft: The New Art of Negotiation

Hilary Gallo An innovative contribution to the art of negotiation by a master practitioner

The Power of Soft is based on answering four key challenges. An imbalance in any one of these areas can undermine our ability to negotiate. These are the 4Ps: Principles, Power, People and Perception.

The book’s first focus is on inner strength. Here we look at Power and Principles to help us draw our strength to our core. It’s about understanding and improving our relative power in the situation. Then it’s about a more honest, principled, way of understanding our needs and the needs of others rather than the positions we tend to take. This is the Strong Core.

People and Perception come next: making sure we see what is actually there rather than what we assume or judge from the facts.

An open, soft front combined with a strong core allows us to handle a complex negotiation or to prepare and respond to a difficult conversation in an open and helpful way whilst preserving our core. The last bit of the book is about how we listen.

The Power of Soft is a guide to explore the art of the possible more openly and curiously whilst remaining true to your needs. This approach works just as well in social relationships as it does in complex corporate negotiations.

The Author

Hilary spent 20 plus years solving complex negotiations for big organisations like Clifford Chance, Accenture and Capgemini. He negotiated everything with an iron fist, slowly learning that being hard didn’t actually work that well. Years of trying things out, some great mentors, some of the world’s best and worst training and a few good books helped him to find a better way. Hilary is currently a personal and executive coach. Trust Me, PR is Dead: The End of the Age of Mass Manipulation

Robert Phillips One of the founding gurus of the public relations industry argues that the murky world of spin must now be replaced by radical honesty and transparency.

Divided into three sections, Robert analyses the fall of Public Relations, argues for the rise of Public Leadership as an alternative model for communications, and offers tools and advice in how to survive in this new world. From one of the giants of the industry comes a death knoll to PR itself. A mix of anecdotes, memories, hints and tips, Trust Me, PR is Dead is also a crushing critique of the industry in which Robert rose to the top, and a rallying cry for something more, something better.

The Author

Robert Phillips co-founded Jackie Cooper Public Relations in 1987, is a former (EMEA) President & CEO of Edelman, the world’s largest PR firm – and Global Chair of its Public Engagement & Future Strategies group. 98% Pure Potato: The Origins Of Advertising Account Planning How account planning and consumer insight took over advertising.

Account planners are the part of advertising agencies tasked with getting inside people's heads. From the late 1960s they brought the consumer into the process of developing advertising.

The book analyses the true beginnings of the discipline and contrasts what planning was and how it was done with the challenges and opportunities faced today. Interviewees include legendary figures like Stephen King at JWT, and Stanley Pollitt, Jane Newman, John Madell and Jim Williams at BMP. Jane is also the person responsible for exporting planning to the United States and is just one of the many highly influential female planners, like Christine Gray and Lee Godden who describe what it was like to be a woman operating in the world of advertising after the Mad Men era.

In the course of the story the very beginnings many iconic campaigns is told, such as Persil, Oxo, Andrex and the heroes of powdered potato, the Smash Martians.

The Author

John Griffiths has been an account planner for most of his career. He founded the consultancy Planning Above and Beyond, and also commonly writes on the web about planning issues.

Tracey Follows is an advertising professional with over 20 years experience of working in agencies including BBH, Saatchi & Saatchi, AMV, VCCP and Lowe. She was named as a top ten planner by Campaign 2011, 2012 and 2013. She is the Chair of the APG (Account Planning Group) and sits on the Exec of WACL (Women in Advertising and Communications London). Most recently Tracey held the position of Chief Strategy Officer at JWT, one of the two agencies credited as being the birthplace of Planning Rights: World Extent: 284pp Publication: April, 2016

The Wake

Paul Kingsnorth One of the most talked-about novels of 2014.

• Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014 • Shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2014 • Winner of the Gordon Burn Prize 2014 • Longlisted for the Folio Prize 2014/15 • Film rights sold to Mark Rylance’s production company, Shakespeare Road.

Reviews

‘Like William Golding’s The Inheritors, it forces you into another, more ancient way of seeing things’ Sunday Times

‘As beautiful as it is riveting’ Eimear McBride, New Statesman

‘A literary triumph’ The Guardian

‘A thrilling story. It is like nothing else.’ Mark Rylance

Set in the three years after the Norman invasion of 1066, The Wake tells the story of Buccmaster of Holland, a man from the Lincolnshire Fens who, with a fractured band of guerrilla fighters, takes up arms against the invaders. It is a post-apocalyptic story of the brutal shattering of lives, a tale of lost gods and haunted visions, narrated by a man bearing witness to the end of his world.

Written in what the author describes as ‘a shadow tongue’ – a version of Old English updated so as to be legible to the modern reader – The Wake renders the inner life of an Anglo-Saxon man an immediacy rare in historical fiction.

The Author

Paul Kingsnorth is the author of two non-fiction books, One No, Many Yeses (2003) and the highly acclaimed Real England (2008), as well as a collection of award winning poetry, Kidland (2011). The Wake is his first novel. Rights: World Rights Sales: US (Graywolf Press) Extent: 374pp

News from the Clouds

Robert Llewellyn Time-travelling Gavin Meckler reaches his third alternative future.

News from the Clouds, the third and final book in Llewellyn’s eco sci-fi ‘News’ trilogy, sees Gavin Meckler experience a far more challenging environment than he has ever experienced before. Gavin is faced with a planet that is ravaged by storms, seared by winds and scorched by an unforgiving sun.

The driving force behind the News From Gardenia and News From The Squares has been to try and imagine a world where things are better than the present day. This is a world where the human race has two options: to live and work in enormous protected culverts that are reinforced to withstand the ravages of the weather, or float above the torment in delicate, lighter- than-air structures moving with the wind. The technology of the Cloud people is far more advanced than in either of the other two stories and it becomes clear to Gavin that not only do they understand how he ended up slipping through time, but they also understand how to help him get back home. Will he finally be able to return to Kingham in 2011? Will the world he left still be there?

Ex

Laurie Avadis Possibly the wildest, funniest, and most violent book you’ll ever read: the everyday story of a 32-stone policeman determined to kill his son.

Daniel’s father wants to kill him. It’s something of a family tradition. Luckily, he’s a survivor. Ex is a comedy like you’ve never read it before. An absurd, vivid account of one boy’s day-to-day struggle to avoid annihilation. It takes you on a voyage down the Thames on the world’s largest and most deadly wooden potato. Along the way you’ll meet an outrageous array of characters: from a flock of swearing ducks to a cappuccino-swigging lion, a grandmother with a predilection for murdering superheroes to the world’s least successful hostage negotiator.

Despite its violence and its humour, Ex is a book which carries at its heart a message of hope for children who face and overcome incredible adversity. That’s why the author has decided to match pledges with donations to Shooting Star Chase Children's Hospice.

The Author

Laurie Avadis has been an artist, a photographer, an author and a musician and is one of the most popular authors on the online writing community ABCtales.com (23,000+ authors, 100,000+ stories). Laurie is also a family lawyer, and he’s had the unfortunate experience of working with children in situations as bad as, and even worse, than the characters in the book. That’s what started him writing this book. Rights: World Extent: 192pp Publication: August, 2015
