What is Litter?
Litter is caused by people, and can refer to anything from a crisp packet or cigarette butt to a bag of rubbish.
All litter is unsightly and makes our local areas look untidy and uncared for.
Common things seen as litter include fast-food packaging, sweet wrappers, drinks cans, bottles and smoking related litter.
Litter
• Litter does not clean itself away! • It can take years to degrade • It can harm wildlife and habitats • It can contribute to crime and make
people feel less safe (Stats)• It can discourage people from investing in
areas • It can attract pigeons and vermin such as
rats • It is a criminal offence to drop litter and
you could be fined
Future Initiatives – Takeaway Waste
As people live busier lives, work later and eat on the move more frequently, they also drop more litter. With Bolton’s thriving night time economy also adding to this problem, consumer patterns increasingly take place over a 24 hour period.
The Council is intending to create a ‘Voluntary Code of Practice’ for reducing litter caused by food on the go establishments throughout Bolton
