Out and about ODRC Members’ Cross Country Success Report by Louise Frary It was Sunday 19th August, usually my favourite weekend as Dean Valley hosts their Summer Cross Country event. Much to my horse Dolly’s disappointment, she couldn’t go this year as she was still recovering from a foot injury. I was still wanting to go and see what we were missing out on and to cheer on Martha Tibbot and Mischief Maker. The morning started quite bright and pleasant in Saddleworth so I had hopes for good weather over in Woodford , but unfortunately the rain started to come down before I arrived at the venue and didn’t seem to want to stop. However, this had obviously done nothing to dampen spirits. Shortly after I arrived I immediately spotted some beaming smiles from other ODRC members, who had already completed their rounds in the Trainers class. It was no surprise to see Dean Valley regulars Ann and John Thompson, but standing next to them and looking very happy was also our own Minda Wigley. I can remember speaking to Minda a few times about trying out the course at Dean Valley, but she hadn’t yet been convinced to give it a go. On Sunday, Minda was absolutely thrilled with Claude as they had jumped clear round the cross country course at their first competition there, which I think everyone will agree is impressive. After some quick congratulations I then had to dash off as Martha Tibbot was about to start in the Novice class and I had promised to try and take some photos of Mischief. It was clear from the start that they were not hanging around, jumping fluently and even overtaking the previous competitor half way round. This ‘blink and you’d miss it’ round was soon over, with another great clear for one of our members. Before catching up with Martha again it was time for the Trainers results to be

announced. Not only had Minda and Claude jumped clear, but they were placed 4th, with Ann and George going one better and claiming the 3rd place rosette - fantastic results! After a while enjoying some more rain (!), it was finally time for the Novice results to be announced. Martha and Mischief won the class, coming home 27 seconds faster than the 2nd placed rider!. In addition to the rosette, class winners at Dean Valley also win a free day’s hunting with the North East Cheshire Drag Hunt, which I am sure Mischief will be enjoying in the near future.

Out and about continued

There were not many ODRC riders at Dean Valley this time (probably in part as they were at the show jumping at Friezland), which makes our results seem even better. I am sure everyone would like to congratulate them in their achievements.

If anyone is thinking of giving Cross country a go then I would definitely recommend Dean Valley, whether you just want a bit of fun or are taking it quite seriously. It’s usually on twice a year (April and August), the course is always good, the organisers are very welcoming and the atmosphere is great. Just ask Ann and John Thompson (they’re always there), or maybe Minda, who I feel quietly confident will be venturing there again with Claude.

Wilmslow Cross Country – 2 September 2012

A couple of weeks after the Dean Valley Cross Country, Wilmslow Riding Club held their final cross country of the season and O&DRC members were once again out in force. Lisa Wake demonstrated that her comeback after having a baby is going very well. She and Buster won the Senior Novice class. Minda Wigley came 6th in the Starter class, and Ann Thompson (with George) and John Thompson (with Rupert) did the pairs class. Whilst these two had great fun it was apparent that there is some work to do on Rupert’s brakes! Ann and John are on the case and have organised some training with Laura Grise (formerly Laura Fortune).

Dean Valley Dressage – 2 September 2012

Martha Tibbot and Mischief Maker are making good progress with their dressage and came 2nd in the Elementary class at Dean Valley.

Olympia 2012

Sarah Dean, a relatively new member of O&DRC has had a super season with Harry (Milltyme Arian Star), not only doing well in dressage, but the partnership have also qualified for Olympia this year in the Veteran class. If any of you have been Out and About doing events outside of O&DRC, do let me know how you’ve gone on (with pics if there are any!) E-mail me at [email protected]. You don’t have to have won – it’s just good to know that people are out there having fun with their horses.

Show jumping show - 19 august 2012 - report

First of all thank you to all the helpers ....including people who did not put their name down to help, but nonetheless mucked in on the day. The names are as follows, Marco, Sharon Hardisity, Arthur Prowse, Jackie Knight, Summer Baker (Hayley Bakers Daughter), Shelley Pritt, Maggie Dickinson, Sue Hollingworth, Abi Atherton and Abi's other half, Mark. Also, a mention must go to Deb Prowse who was ragwort picking around the grounds of Freizland. Without the helpers the show could not go ahead so thank you!

The day started off dry and bright and we managed to get through the Clear Round and most of the Beginners novice before anyone got wet! Summer Baker rode her mum's horse Bienedante for the first time and went on to get a Clear Round! She then kindly went on to provide her help with other parts of the show. Sarah Broadbent and Echo Lady were another pair to get a clear round (and they probably would have been placed highly if it was against the clock. ha ha)

There were lots of smiles and most of these continued even when the heavens opened!! We had a slight hitch with the timing equipment and poor Elizabeth Kershaw and Solitaire had to do their jump off twice! The timer got slightly wet (well very wet..ha ha) and went on the blink. You've got to love the English weather. Elizabeth and Solitaire didn't let this faze them and went on to win the class!! Marco made sure he kept the timer under his waterproof cape/poncho and thankfully it worked for the rest of the show. The ponchos certainly did come in handy....once the rain started it didn't really stop. There was still quite a good turnout though.

We didn't have enough entries to run the pairs jumping which a fun class against the clock. We had one person express an interest in it but we'd have to have a few more participants to run it. If there is more interest expressed at the next show on the 9th September (and the ground is safe enough) we might run that class. We'll have to wait and see.

There were only four entries for the 3ft class and by this point the ground was a little worse for wear. Lucky really that there were no entries for the higher classes. Hopefully we will get another spell of dry weather and the field will be ready for the next show jumping event in September. Thank you to all who attended and competed

Ridden & In Hand showing (without working hunter)

– 26 august 2012 by Lesley Sanders, co-organiser

Fantastic turnout for our last show! Very well done to everyone :) Thanks to the helpers: Krystina Bamber, Jane Lees, Maggie Dickinson, Kelso McAleese, Joel Broadbent and Jacky Knight. Huge thanks to Jade Taylor, Alison Read and Hayley Thornycroft, without their help there would have been no Showing Show this year. Jade and I would like to compete in the showing shows next year and Hayley is starting to show her horse Darcy. So with regret we will not be running this show next year. It has been a fab experience and I would like to do it again in the future when I have the time. Huge thanks to my helpers who worked hard to make these shows run smoothly. Thanks also for the behind the scenes helpers – Minda Wigley for sorting the results and Sue Hollingworth for her help and advice. I would also like to thank the entrants to my shows. The positive comments from judges with regard to our polite and well behaved riders and the standard of turnout made me very proud of our club. Very well done to everyone who qualified for Festival Association, UK showing and Blue Chip. Super job everyone :):) xx Showing Clinic Janet Kershaw, the judge from this show together with Haley Thornycroft (co-organiser) have offered to do a showing clinic. Janet commented that some of the entrants in the classes just needed a bit of tweaking to improve their placings. If anyone is interested please let me know so I can sort a venue, date and cost etc. (Contact Lesley on 07764 151616 or e-mail her at [email protected]

Showjumping show – 9 september 2012 By Lauren Jackson and Jane Fielding, Show organisers We were very lucky. When I went to check the ground during the week, for once this season it was remarkably dry! The weather on the morning was perfect for us. We set the course up early and, thanks to the hard work from all our helpers, we were set up ready with time to spare. The classes still went ahead even though the turn out was a bit low, but I’m sure everyone who came along had a good day out. We were even lucky enough to run the pairs class for the first time this season, which was a great deal of fun. Thank you to all the helpers who included: Arthur and Deb Prowse, Heide Newton, Jacqui Horrocks, Julie Swindells, Joyce Bromley, Lesley Jackson, the paramedic, Dianne Allcock, Jake Hepworth, Denzil Edwards and a big thank you to Patrick for being there at the crack of dawn. Well Done to all who took part.

Did you see this in the Oldham Chronicle on 16 August 2012? (Sorry the article was a bit too big to scan it in full.) This is our own Lesley Sanders, co-organiser of this year’s Showing Shows.

more on road safety by Andrea Armitage

There is an article in this months "horse magazine" and I feel that it is something that would benefit all Riders so I am asking you to get involved.

The article reads as follows: “Riders are being urged to speak up if they feel lowering the speed limits will make roads safer. The Government has launched a consultation on guidance for setting local speed limits, which has been welcomed by the British Horse Society. According to the charity hundreds of horses and riders are involved in accidents on the roads each year. In 2011 the figure reported to the accident-report web site www.horseaccidents.org.uk was 225, including 8 rider fatalities but it is felt this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The British Horse Society plans to respond to the consultation before it closes in October and wants equestrians to put across their views to enable it to formulate a response. To submit your comments please email: [email protected]

Many thanks to all that take the time to read this and hopefully make a difference.

Bridleways etiquette??

On the day of the Showjumping Show held on 19 August two riders who had just left the show were riding along the bridle path on their way back home. It was pouring with rain and they were soaked and understandably cranky!. However, a dog walker coming in the opposite direction and carrying an umbrella moved off the path to make way for them. He was dismayed that they were so busy chatting to each other that they didn’t even acknowledge his presence. He made some comment along the lines of “A thank you would be nice!” The response he received from the riders was, sadly, discourteous and included the words “This is a bridle path and we have right of way” and then “F**k off”.

I’ve included this anecdote for two reasons:

• Firstly, to alert members to the fact that the term “bridle path” simply implies that horses are PERMITED to travel along them. It does NOT give horses priority.

• Secondly we horse riders SHARE the bridle paths with cyclists and walkers (with or without dogs, prams, children or umbrellas) and must all show consideration for and courtesy to each other.

We must therefore acknowledge and be considerate to other users who may be more vulnerable than us. Conversely we are fully entitled to expect that those other users will show equal consideration and courtesy to us – but if they fail to do so, it doesn’t help our cause if we are then abusive! So if you find yourself in a similar situation to these two riders, it might be worth remembering that “Discretion is the better part of valour”. It is better to say nothing than to give horse riders a bad name.

Do unto others?

The three articles above (Lesley Sanders article from the Oldham Chronicle on inconsiderate car drivers, Andrea Armitage’s plea for horse riders to take action on speed limits, and then the item on horse rider behaviour on bridle paths) I have just realised have a common thread. We horse riders should behave towards those on foot in the same way as we wish those in cars to behave towards us – with consideration for their vulnerability!
