Project Narrative1. What is planned?* Describe project plan and indicate which parts of project any NMHC award will fund.

The Photographer Presentations connect award-winning photographers to the public through inspiring presentations, moderated discussions, and audience engagement. The 10 annual photographic awards winners discuss their projects illuminating contemporary social issues. Each of the photographers discusses the subject matter and relevant themes in a power-point multimedia lecture format, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q & A, and then the next photographer presents in a repeating sequence until all ten photographers have presented. The event moderator generates discussions to expand on the presentations and highlight the historical significance of the projects.

Specific topics that examine the human condition will be presented by each photographer. They include: Justin Maxon’s project 'Livin' the Dream,' a participatory media project produced in collaboration with incarcerated individuals in the Humboldt County Correction facility. Maxon utilizes psychology techniques of visual goal-setting to create collages with the incarcerated to help envision a personal aspiration they hope to achieve upon their release. Writing programs were fundamental to the process in which visualizations of spiritual, physical, and emotional obstacles were identified.

Ada Trillo will present the project 'La Caravana Del Diablo', a documentary project following a migrant Caravan from Honduras to the Guatemala/Mexico Border. Trillo documents those fleeing violence and poor economic conditions who traveled with a massive Honduran organized migrant caravan through Guatemala into Mexico. After traveling for 8 days the caravan crossed the Suchiate River into Mexico and was met by the recently established Guardia Nacional comprised of former Federal, Military, and Naval Police. Mexican President, Andrés Manual López Obrador has historically called for safe passage for migrants, but when US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs, Mexico reversed its policy and deployed soldiers to keep Central American migrants from entering Mexico. For many asylum seekers, deportation will result in living a life of extortion, impoverishment, and even death.

Leonard Suryajaya will discuss his winning project, 'False Idol,' which explores themes of camaraderie, fleeing a homeland, and putting down roots. A Chinese-Indonesian immigrant, Suryajaya explores power, authority, and legitimacy in his work. The project 'False Idol' was made throughout his Green card application process to use this body of work as a way to document, re-imagine, and expose that process.

Sandra Chen Weinstein's work focuses on social identity, culture, and minorities. She has dedicated, long-term projects on women, LGBTQIA, minorities, and American pop culture. Chen Weinstein will discuss the project 'Transcend', a story of relationships within the LGBTQIA community centered on her adult child who recently came out as queer, transgender, non-binary at age 28. Her presentation, a collection of intimate portraits and stories of people and their loved ones, families, including her own, from diverse LGBTQIA communities speak to the constant struggles for equality and acceptance.

Kari Wehrs has a deep interest in the techniques, technology, and history of the photographic medium. Wehrs will present her project 'Shot', an exploration of gun violence and right-to-carry culture in the U.S. From scenes of gun violence that make the national news, to her 61-year-old mother who suddenly decided to carry a gun, incidents of gun use haunt Wehrs with curiosity and fear. Having no personal attachment to guns, she is grappling with present-day societal reverberations and implications of the gun in American culture. To create this series, Wehrs set up her darkroom tent and tintype gear at known target shooting locations in the Arizona desert. She meets gun enthusiasts strangers and asked if they are willing to participate in the project. She created their tintype portraits, and when complete, gave them the option to use the image as a target with some taking part and leaving bullet holes in the plate. “Shot” refers simultaneously to her use of the camera and the participant’s use of the gun.

The diversity of topics and presenters offers unique insights into underrepresented communities, issues, and individuals across the world. Over a few hours, New Mexico audiences will be invited to discus a wide

range of human concerns by participating in the Q&A with the photographer and moderator. The moderator will prepare questions for each photographer to contextualize the projects and provide a starting point for discussions. This creates direct opportunities for audience members to dive deeper into the topics and explore the sentiments shared in the presentations. The moderated discussion also offers insights, expanding and re-contextualizing the topics for New Mexico audiences. We will transfer the program to online conferencing software using Zoom if social distancing limits public gathering. Online platforms will offer remote viewing and participation along with chat features that enable the audience to participate online.

The grant funds will support the presenter and evaluator honoraria, the audio visual technician, audio visual equipment, video capture and video editing for inclusion on the website. The grant funds will also support advertising via a half page ad in the Santa Fe New Mexican weekly arts insert, the Pasatiempo.

2. When will it take place?* Planned public program dates and times.

The Photographer Presentations take place on a weekend afternoon to ensure there are minimal schedule conflicts with other events and to maximize attendance. They are currently scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2020, 1-5:00 pm in conjunction with the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival. Virtual live stream recordings will occur at the same time, and archived video documentation will be made available on our websites for future viewing.

Comment: If no public gatherings allowed by this date, will it be recorded for publication later? If so, where and how?

3. Where will it take place?* List communities of public programs, including venues.

The program will be hosted at the Drury Plaza Hotel, Santa Fe. Live stream video will be provided online for remote viewers. If the public gathering is limited, the program will take place online using software for remote access and participation. Zoom is the proposed platform for virtual broadcasting and audience engagement.

5. How does this project involve the humanities disciplines?* The act that established the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) says, “The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism, and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

Images transcend language and cultural barriers, making photography one of the most accessible mediums for engaging with the humanities. CENTER’s focus on photography enables us to review, evaluate, and support many humanities subjects. Our programs reflect on the evolution of photography as a connective

and influential medium. Themes regarding culture, diverse histories, social inequities, family systems, and identity are common topics for our constituents.

The national platform we create with the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival serves as a bridge between meaningful images and an expansive national audience. We provide opportunities for photojournalists, documentarians, multimedia artists and photographers using traditional processes to create new works, share their projects with diverse audiences, and operate in communion with fellow practitioners.

Under that umbrella, the Photographer Presentations are a platform for the exploration of the human condition through visual storytelling. The public presentations offer insights into current human conditions depicted in the subjects of the long-form narrative photographic projects. The projects reflect on humanities topics through lens-based media that include ethics, diversity, politics, household archeology, social science and evolving culture. The presenters come from diverse backgrounds and heritage and as a whole, this program offers a critical investigation to the formation of culture, history, and identity reflective of the current human environment.

6. What are the evaluation criteria for the project?* Consider the impact the project intends to have on its audience and how that will be measured or evaluated by the Project Director and Evaluator.

CENTER's foremost evaluation criterion is raising awareness around critical issues. This goal is measured by evaluating audience engagement with surveys, attendance, media coverage, and online traffic. The independent evaluator and the Project Director measure this goal by assessing the diversity of the presentations’ content and perspective, and analyzing the number of audience questions as well as overall audience attendance.

Evaluation of awareness expansion is specifically addressed in audience surveys. These are distributed online and in-person during public events. Clear questions allow audience members to self-identify if new knowledge was gained from attending the photographer presentations. Some key questions include:

“Was the program engaging?” “Did you learn something new?” “Did the program focus on meaningful issues?”

CENTER tracks our reach with new audiences by collecting zip codes and reviewing email list signups, increase in social media followers, and website traffic. We compare results to previous years to determine the reach to new audiences. Evaluations would include online surveys for virtual audiences that attended through the online platforms.

7. What is the role of each humanities scholar(s) in this project?* Describe the intended contribution of each humanities scholar listed above. What humanities issues will they address?

Arif Khan, ModeratorThe Museum Director, Arif Khan, serves as the event moderator and provides a framework to analyze the

photographic projects' subjects. He creates the discourse around the themes and facilitates the question and answer session with each photographer and the audience in an open exchange. The moderator also provides historical and cultural context to keep the conversations accessible to the audience.

Dr. Evan Anderman; Program Manager and AdvisorAnderman will be a key advisor in the planning of the event ensuring the presentation flow is balanced

with the opportunities to dialogue. He will also introduce the event to the public and offer closing remarks.

8. Proposed targeted audience/participants?* Indicate demographics and/or geographic area and projected size of audience for project events. Identify new or underserved populations that might be included in target audience.

The proposed audiences include the NM public state-wide and Photo Festival attendees, accounting for 150-200 attendees. Outreach to Santa Fe public schools and to New Mexico University students with an interest in photography, media, and visual storytelling, is also planned. University students receive opportunities to volunteer and to engage directly with photographic experts. The event is free and open to the public.

A secondary audience of amateur, semi-professional and professional photographers, journalists, editors, and educators are reached online. Approximately 1,000 additional viewers are anticipated from the CENTER Facebook (11,930 followers), Instagram (4,785 followers), and Twitter (6,303 followers).

9. Planned publicity efforts?* List plans by sponsor organization and partners, types of media to be used and geographic areas to be targeted.

CENTER begins promoting the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival with its Call for Entries mailer in January inviting photographers from across the state and nation to apply. This direct mail piece goes out to 22,000 nationally alongside an email campaign that reaches out to another 100,000 worldwide. During the Call for Entries season, website traffic at VisitCenter.org increases to 30,000 unique visitors. We promote opportunities for participation and announcements about the Photographer Presentations through these efforts.

Review Santa Fe Photo Festival is also promoted via a comprehensive Program Guide, mailed to up to

15,000 photographers nationally and distributed in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The presenting photographers' award winning project descriptions are included. The 2020 Program Guide plans are to include a commissioned curatorial overview by an international scholar providing context for the work within the history of photography. In addition to the photographers presenting and their subjects covered, the Photographer Presentation event details are featured in the Program Guide accounting for a up to one-third of the entire magazine-style publication. The shelf life of the printed piece is ongoing, providing a robust overview of photographic practice and relevant topics to 2020. This is a key outreach piece reaching CENTER's NM 1,200 subscribers and beyond. In addition to the direct mail there is also an digital guide that has upwards of 2,500 impressions. To accompany the Photographer Presentations, we aim to host podcasts with the photographers and scholars leading up to the event, providing additional publicity and engagement opportunities.

CENTER purchases half-page advertisements in Santa Fe New Mexican's weekly insert, the Pasatiempo. There are also targeted press releases sent to culture writers across the U.S.. As a result, Review Santa Fe programs have previously been included in high distribution art publications, including Art in America, Photo District News, TIME Magazine and The New Yorker. These publications guide traffic to the festival and bring more attention to the public events like the Photographer Presentations.

As the photographic audience is technologically proficient and attuned to social media, the promotion also includes a content marketing strategy incorporating Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. CENTER maintains a social media presence with promoted and regular posts. Approximately 6+ posts drive awareness of the overall call for entries to photographers to participate in the photo festival and another 8 more posts are focused on Photographer Presentation program. CENTER promoted posts reach nearly 30,000 photographers in Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. as well as across the state of New Mexico. CENTER hosts Instagram take-overs with esteemed alumni that have thousands of followers. Our most recent take-over included several photographers with 40,000 or more followers. These efforts drive web traffic to the Photographer Presentations.

The Review Santa Fe Photo Festival hosts up to ten blog writers and magazine editors. We also invite up to ten museum curators including Curator of Photography from the J.Paul Getty Museum, Curator for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Assistant Curator from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and many other well-respected institutions and book publishers such as Chronicle and Rizzoli senior editors to attend. The editors aid in drawing more national attention to the Photographer Presentations.

These professionals, and their access to audiences of tens of thousands to millions, raise Santa Fe's national profile. The presenting photographers often promote their participation in the Photographer Presentations to their followings, attracting new audiences to the program. The Review Santa Fe Photo Festival exhibitions showcasing the annual award winners and presenters, attract up to 3,000 attendees. They have previously received the designation of one of the "Ten Best Summer Photography Exhibitions" in the nationally distributed magazine, "American Photo." In this way, CENTER adds to the rich tradition of excellence in photography in New Mexico which provides additional publicity leverage for the Photographer Presentations.

Further promotion for Photographer Presentations will be via CENTER's e-newsletters which have an active subscriber base of 14,780.

10. Value of Project on Audience Members* Describe how a successful project will impact audience members and their communities.

The Photographer Presentations are a portal into underrepresented worlds. The New Mexico residents who engage with these important visual narratives gain deeper insights into the critical issues highlighted. The presentations plays an active role in the distribution and exchange of knowledge, and provides a catalyst for dialogue and connection. The aim is to engage audiences with new information for their own lives and communities. Upwards of 3,000 visitors have attended the public programs that invite people to think beyond the headlines and consider the impacts on real people, fostering an empathetic global citizenry.

The audience is comprised of the weekend conference registrants that includes 100 vetted photographers, the 45 portfolio reviewers and up to 15 New Mexico based volunteers. Many students of NMSU and UNM participate in the programs which provides unparalleled networking opportunities and professional development to New Mexico students. One photo professor who brought her class last year remarked "they haven't stopped talking about it." Photographers and audience members often stay in touch for years due to a shared passion for the subjects. Social media engagements and Facebook groups help to foster ongoing engagements after the event.

The potential impact also includes readers engaged with media outlets such as The New York Times, TIME magazine, National Geographic, Wired, The New Yorker, and other high distribution magazines and blogs. This is due to the editors of these publications attend the conference and share the projects seen during the Photographer Presentations with their audiences, reaching thousands and sometimes millions of viewers. This fosters awareness of the today's important underreported stories and perspectives seen at the event.

11. Condensed Project Description (with credits)* Condense the Project Description into a publicity statement for NMHC use. Include funding support credits for NMHC and NEH in a three-sentence description.

The internationally renowned photographic conference, the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival, hosts free and open to the public Photographer Presentations made possible by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“What’s truer than truth?” The answer to this ancient proverb is “the story.” Humanity’s propensity for stories has been in the making for 27,000 years of evolution. Narrative is integral to human under-standing, learning, and interpretation of events. Research shows that messages delivered as stories can be up to 22 times more memorable than facts alone. In the current tornado of media, facts are dismissed. Artificial intelligence is shaping the public domain; journalists are under attack, while publications are facing a war on truth. At the same time, our appetites for stories have never been heartier, as evidenced by hours of binging on complex long-form narratives. The story and the truth seen through the personal photographic project is at the heart of CENTER. Earlier this year, environmental photographer Cristina Mittermeier said, “We need an army of visual storytellers to create bridges of empathy,” which speaks to one of our creative noble goals. Photography’s unique relationship to truth is positioned to reveal many of today’s critical issues. As we align together on the axis of responsibility, making each individual truth available to the world, we contribute to an engaged and empathetic global citizenship. We invite you, photographers, alumni, reviewers and mission-driven storytellers, to join your allies here in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Here, you will find a profoundly unique sense of place for connecting to landscapes, cultures, and oneself. Please join us in our 25th year as we empower photographers to make and share images that affect minds, hearts, and lives.

Discover Santa Fe

Santa Fe, known as “The City Different,” is home to a wealth of arts, culture, history, and countless breath-taking land-

scapes. Visitors come to our city to connect with nature and culture, and many leave with the sense of the deep

history that makes Santa Fe so special. Originally home to the Tewa people, Santa Fe is one of the longest inhabited

places in the country and the oldest state capitol. The history found here spans generations and cultures. New Mexico’s legacy of

photographic excellence began with some of the medium’s most defining names. Ansel Adams and his image Moonrise over Hernandez, Timothy O’Sul-livan and the many images he made here to Alfred Stieglitz and his partner Georgia O’Keeffe who were both instrumental in the modern art movement. New Mexico has been an important place for photog-raphy and remains a top destination for artists and art lovers alike. Art enthusi-asts journey from around the world inspired by the state’s artistic legacy, the sublime quality of light, rich culture, and expansive landscapes.

Over the course of two days, this workshop focuses on photographic project advancement, including honing a statement of purpose, identifying collabo-rators, securing funding and effective presentations for curators, editors and other image professionals. Learn how to tailor material to fit the museum, gallery or publication — and how to best approach curators and editors for meetings and utilize limited resources to maximize impact.

Participants have the opportunity to receive peer feedback and individual coaching sessions that include specific editing-and-sequencing advice from a curator and editor who take on new work each year. Other topics include networking, artist residencies and opportunities to connect with potential collaborators. This workshop is geared toward mid-career photographers and educators. Pre-registration is required.

AWARDS, GRANTS, AND PROGRAMS

“The unexpected conversation, the searing image, the unforeseen opportunity, or the impact of hearing a fellow artist discuss his or her process can give artists bits of truth and

provocation that tangle, battle, nurture, and ultimately make possible one’s own decisive and particular vision. Moments like these cannot be scheduled, but a place for their

possibility can be created.”

A NOTE FROM CENTER’S FOUNDER

1994 was a momentous year in the birth and soon-to-be future

of CENTER. The organization was founded as Santa Fe Center for the Visual Arts. Its mission was to provide educational scholarships

to deserving and committed photographers in need of financial support to further their paths as storytellers. In July of 1994, Sam Abell and Santa Fe Photographic

Workshops teamed up to offer The Project Workshop for the first time. Sam had long believed in the importance of long-term, personal photographic projects in order to

live a full and rich photographic life. At that time, many personal photographic projects never saw the light of day, but were kept in photo paper boxes and only pulled out

once in a while. The Project Workshop held high the value and significance of personal photographic projects, building a campfire around which committed photographers sat. The response to this new forum was instantaneous in its ability to get personal

projects out into the world and, in many cases, published. It became clear that Santa Fe Center for the Visual Arts, with its ability to offer support to photographers, was the ideal organization to champion long-term, personal photographic projects, which have

been the heartbeat of the organization ever since.

“Review Santa Fe is a wonderful event! It enabled me to have several face-to-face meetings with curators whom I had previously only known from afar, and these meetings resulted in several exhibitions and acquisitions at museums throughout the country.”

“I got one of my very first museum shows from Review Santa Fe. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of the early part of my career. I continue work with artists, museum curators and mentors I met there 13 years ago.“

“These portraits of the Earth’s surface were made during extended periods of solitude while in various states of being lost, cold, hungry or sleep-deprived. Having been stripped of basic human comforts, I’m forced to confront the staggering indifference of the forces that have shaped our existence. In this exhaustion, there’s a moment of surrender to the unforgiving and unknowable.”codycobb.com

“In The Goddess Series I am using vintage photographic portraits of women. I transform each individual with digital collage into a particular mythological goddess. Disturbed and concerned

by the regressive and repressive attitudes towards women found in current in political and religious groups today, I am moved to create images of women who can wield power (in positive

or sometimes in negative behaviors). I am expressing the power, exotic, spiritual, and esoteric qualities of women.”

Ghosts of Segregation photographically explores America’s racism as seen in the vernacular landscape; schools for “colored” children, theatre entrances and restrooms for “colored people,” lynching sites, juke joints, jails, hotels and bus stations. Past is prologue. Segregation is as much

current events as it is history. These ghosts haunt us because they are very much alive. frishphoto.com

For nearly a century, within psychiatric and medical establishments, members of the LGBTQ community were characterized within the psychiatric diagnostic manual, the DSM, as mentally ill,

and treated as such by the community at large. This project highlights the history of mischaracter-izing LGBT members as mentally ill, psychotic, unstable, unhinged, and “crazy” so that society can remember what this community had to struggle through to reach their current status of equality.

Carry Over recalls and subverts historical Orientalist portraits made of Middle Eastern women. Women were often depicted

carrying vessels of bread or water on their head and staged lounging with “oriental” props that built an uncritical fantasy of the

hidden harem for Western audiences. Alshaibi's work amplifies the physical burden of representation found in those photographs, while using traditional processes from the colonial era. The project

resists superficial analysis that reduces Middle Eastern women’s rights and opportunities, which keeps them affixed to assumed

subordinate positions in the imagination of others.

Photography studios were largely run by Western photographers, and the images they produced were valued as characterizations of

the region. The appetite for the exotic, the distant lands and peoples living a simpler time — by Western audiences meant the Orientalist

photographer’s vision of Middle Eastern women were captured to express inferiority, picturesqueness of native culture and as the

exotic sexual object. Alshaibi writes, "I’m interested in the societal impact of unequal power relations between the West and the

Middle East, and how that domination is articulated through photo-graphs. By using Albumen printing, a popular print process of the

19th and early 20th century, I am evoking a near century in which the West controlled the Middle East."

Review Santa Fe Scholar Presentation

In late 1969, Diane Arbus began to work on a portfolio. At the time of her death in 1971, she had completed the printing for eight known sets of A box of ten photographs, of a planned edition of fifty, only four of which she sold during her lifetime. This presentation draws on my research for Diane Arbus: A box of ten photographs, the first exhibition to focus exclusively on the portfolio. Using the recorded voices of those who knew and worked with her, it tracks the evolution of an Arbus canon grounded in her work on the portfolio; the solidification of that canon as a consequence of her untimely death; and the emergence of a discourse as institutions sought to accommodate and respond to its challenges. Considered in relation to the portfolio, the odyssey of Diane Arbus is the odyssey of photography itself---of a field and its language. Bridging Arbus’s career with that of photography as we now know it was the portfolio, A box of ten photographs.

Western photographers working in the Middle East and North Africa in the late 19th and early 20thcenturies often played up the exoticism of people and cultures of those regions in the images theyproduced. In staged portraits of women, for instance, their subjects were sexualized, feeding thefantasy of a harem catering to the whims of men. Alternately, they covered women from head to toe, presenting them as mysterious shrouded figures to be pitied for their lack of freedom and identity andfeared for the mystery of what was hidden beneath their veils. Such images entered the publicconsciousness through postcards, magazines, and newspapers, amplifying false narratives.

“They’re part of what we call ‘othering,’ ” says Iraq-born photographer Sama Alshaibi, a photographyprofessor at the University of Arizona School of Art whose work deals, primarily, with the ways inwhich women from the Middle East and North Africa are represented. “These were all staged portraitsthat were part of scene-making by these photographers,” she says, explaining how photographerscreated images that were intended to look like authentic representations of place. “The women werestaged among other ‘Oriental props,’ like the Oriental carpet, the hookah pipe, painted backdrops ofpalm trees and desert vistas, and traditional, ornate clothing that often included a headdress or vesselfor carrying water over their head.”

Alshaibi is one of the photographers participating in Center’s 19th annual Review Santa Fe PhotoFestival (Thursday, Oct. 17, through Sunday, Oct. 20) at the Drury Plaza Hotel (828 Paseo de Peralta).Center is a Santa Fe-based nonprofit support organization for documentary and fine artphotographers, and sponsors the festival every autumn. Vetted photographers at all stages of theircareers have their work critiqued during the festival. The event also provides networkingopportunities for them to connect with publishers, curators, and other professionals in the field.

During the festival’s run, Alshaibi gives two presentations on her project Carry Over. The first, at6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, is open to festival pass holders. The second (1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.,Saturday, Oct. 19) is part of an event in which Center’s 2019 awards and grants winners discuss theirwork; that presentation is free and open to the public.

Alshaibi is Center’s Project Development Grant winner for 2019. Other Center award categoriesinclude Curator’s Choice, Editor’s Choice, and Director’s Choice. There are also Juror’s awards and anExcellence in Teaching award. The Project Development Grant is given annually to a photojournalist, fine art, or documentary photographer engaged in a project, and includes a $5,000 cash award as wellas an invitation to Review Santa Fe.

Carry Over is a series of powerful images that uses the language of staged photographs from the earlydays of photography — the painted backdrops and other props — and was made with the antiquealbumen photographic process. Carry Over references the albumen tradition, which was among thefirst processes used in commercial photography. But the series isn’t an homage. Rather, it is apowerful statement from a more contemporary perspective. “A lot of the images that I created forCarry Over act as a reclamation or a resistance,” says the 46-year-old photographer, who also appearsin the work. “The body feels far more empowered and strong. That has a lot to do with the subjectbeing the photographer, rather than the subject having no power in her representation.”

The albumen process involves many steps. First, the paper used for the print is coated with anemulsion made from the albumen found in egg whites, which is mixed with salt (sodium orammonium chloride). Then it’s dipped in silver nitrate, which renders the paper light-sensitive.Alshaibi says learning the technique, which she had never worked with before, was an education. “Ibelieve the painstaking process itself created some parameters for photographers back then,” shesays. “There were real practical reasons to be creating these studio constructions right next to whereyou’d be developing and printing.”

In some of the photographs, Alshaibi wears elaborate (if sometimes nonsensical) headdresses. Inothers, she holds some contemporary object over her head in place of the anachronistic water jug. These objects — each created by the photographer — are sculptures with no actual utilitarian function.Even the headdresses, impractical as real headwear, are sculptural and often exaggerated, soaring toabsurd heights over the subject’s head. In several images, her direct gaze — a sharp contrast to theearly depictions of Middle Eastern women — confronts the viewer.

Like Alshaibi, the photographers participating in Review Santa Fe are juried in on the strength oftheir work and artist statements, not their reputations. The jurying process is blind. Center receivesapproximately 500 submissions annually from photographers all over the world, but only has 100slots available for the portfolio reviews. This year, a panel of 47 reviewers are on hand to give expertadvice to the emerging and established photographers. The reviewers include editors, publishers, museum curators, and gallerists.

The review sessions are not open to the public. But the public can view all of the portfolios during anevening portfolio walk (6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18) at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Pavilion (1607Paseo de Peralta). Other free public events include a photographic book fair at the Drury, where you

can find the latest titles from Radius Books, Photo-eye Bookstore, Gnomic Book, and others (10 a.m.to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20).

Review Santa Fe participants represent a broad spectrum of contemporary photography. Digitalphotography proliferates in the information age, but some festival attendees also work with film andtraditional darkroom processes, as Alshaibi did for Carry Over. In 2014, she was awarded a FulbrightScholar Fellowship as part of a residency at the Palestinian Museum outside of Ramallah, where sheencountered examples of the historic prints that inspired the series.

“I had seen these images many times in books, but it was very different seeing actual albumenimages,” she says. “They’re very seductive as photographs, so old and tactile. Think about the timeand effort it took to construct them. I immediately eliminated the idea that I could do this inPhotoshop or use a filter that was digital. There’s always something to learn through the mediumitself.” ◀
