Review Ripon November 2008

O ur fantastic front cover photo this month

comes courtesy of Review Ripon reader and talented amateur photographer Mark Eden and shows the illuminated cellarium at Fountains Abbey. If you have any high quality digital seasonal photos of local scenes or landmarks and would like to see them featured on the front cover of Review Ripon, please get in touch. November seems to be a month when people start new ventures, as there are a number of celebratory features and adverts in this issue as local businesses toast to their ‘birthdays’. It’s a very welcome change to read about the successes of established local businesses. As we approach the third anniversary of the launch of Review Ripon magazine, we are extremely pleased to announce that our distribution is expanding once again to 10,000 copies per month. New areas include Dishforth and more saturation in Masham. Don’t forget you can still pick up copies of Review Ripon in the first week of the new month at shops, cafes and businesses in Ripon and Masham if you don’t live in the home delivery area.

E very parent wants their young child to learn and grow to the best of their potential, and for them to

have fun and make friends at the same time. In Ripon, parents and pre-school children can attend the Socatot classes at Hugh Ripley Hall that are run by local resident Brian McNair. But what can football classes teach our kids...apart from how to play football? Socatots is a nationwide phenomenon that was first developed in Leeds by Simon Clifford, a former English teacher. He imported Brazilian soccer skills and training methods into the UK and then used them as a basis to develop the Brazilian Soccer Schools and the Socatots programme. The emphasis in Brazilian style training is on ball skills, footwork and improving a player’s affinity with the ball. Of course a child attending the classes will significantly improve their footie skills, but as Socatots was developed for pre-schoolers - its not just all about football! As well as making the classes attractive to children who already enjoy football, they appeal to many children, both boys and girls, as they are active, fun and engaging. The football skills are used as a medium to stimulate other areas of learning and development in a safe and creative way. Parents are involved in the classes and help their child with many of the exercises, which include essentials such as basic counting, colour and shape recognition. Through the various activities and exercises, the children can build on their communication skills by learning how to listen, follow instructions, concentrate and work both as part of a team and as individuals. Fitness, balance, motor skills and co-ordination are all improved. In these ways, Socatots offers children a way of enhancing their physical, social and educational skills from an early age before they attend school, which can have a positive impact on their self-confidence. “All the children receive a matching Socatots uniform which they love,” says Brian, who has two young

children of his own, “it makes them feel part of a team so this helps them interact with the other ‘team members’.” At the end of the session, each child is awarded a new sticker to put in their Socatots book to show what they’ve achieved and a round of applause from their team, which makes the kids beam from ear to ear. Brian runs Socatots classes in Ripon at Hugh Ripley Hall for age groups 2 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you cannot attend during the week, Brian also runs Socatots sessions in Thirsk on Saturdays. So if you have a budding Beckham in

the family, whether a boy or girl, call Brian for more details or to book, or visit his website. “Positive encouragement to aid learning is what our sessions are all about,” continues Brian, “and hopefully all the children will go on to have healthy active lifestyles in the future and enjoy playing football...maybe even at professional level!” Contact Brian MacNair on 01765 620374 (mobile 07811 109437) email him at [email protected] or visit www.socatots.com/york&ripon

At the moment Brazilian Soccer School classes are available for boys and girls of any ability from school age to 9 years (upper age limit will increase to 16 years). “The emphasis in these sessions is developing improved ball control and football skills that can be incorporated into competitive games,” says Brian. Each complex skill is broken down into simple steps that are easily learned by the children, who repeat the steps until they become very accomplished. First they do this individually, then with partners, then they play against each other in small sided games incorporating the skills they have learned. Brazilian Soccer Schools is much more than just developing technical skills as more and more players are graduating from Brazilian Soccer Schools into professional football clubs. Micah Richards (Manchester City), John Bostock (Tottenham Hotspur) and Aiden White, who at 17 years old has broken into the Leeds United first team, are all examples of professional players who have graduated from Brazilian Soccer Schools. Vincent (in the Newcastle strip) has been going to Socatot classes, then BSS, for almost two years. His father says “He practises all the time at home and he just loves the classes! Brian is incredible - he keeps the kids entertained whilst they are learning, and he’s very fair and encourages them all. I noticed Vincent really improve after just the first couple of lessons.” Learning respect for others and good manners is also a part of the ethos of the classes, as it is with Socatots. The children learn how to listen, follow instructions and communicate more effectively and how to play in the games with an edge of competitiveness yet still show good sportsmanship. Brazilian Soccer School sessions run after school on Wednesday and on Saturday afternoons in Ripon at St. Wilfrids Primary School. So if you have a football enthusiast in the family, whether a boy or girl, call Brian on 01765 620374 or email [email protected] for more details.

Dish's…where good food is on the menu all year round!

Mixed Bean Curry (serves 4 - 6)

This is a flavoursome curry with bags of taste and texture that’s guaranteed to impress your veggie friends. Even a confirmed carnivore such as me barely misses the meat. Like a barbeque or a chilli, curry is the kind of dish that persuades the man about the house that cooking is his job. If you have leftovers, this curry freezes very well and will make a quick easy tea at a later date. Whether you cook it or he does, enjoy! 6 cloves garlic, crushed 2 red chillies, finely diced (remove the seeds first if you like it mild!) a 1 inch chunk of fresh ginger, peeled and very finely diced 1 medium size brown onion, roughly diced 1 red pepper, roughly diced 6 mushrooms, finely sliced 2 tsp ground coriander 2 tsp ground ginger 2 dessert spoons of ground cumin ½ tsp ground star anise (optional) a generous pinch of saffron 1 can of chickpeas 1 can of red kidney beans 1 can of pinto beans 1 can of black eye peas 1 can of butter beans 1 small can tomato puree 2 cans chopped tomatoes 1 can of coconut milk a good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped salt and pepper to taste Enough rice for the number of people you are serving, cooked according to the instructions on the packet Natural yoghurt and a few naan breads if you fancy. In your largest pan, heat about 2 tablespoons of veg oil and a generous knob of butter until the butter starts to foam. Add the garlic, chilli and fresh ginger. Fry gently for 2 or 3 minutes and then add the onion, pepper and mushrooms. Continue to fry gently until it’s all just starting to colour. Add the ground ginger, cumin, coriander, anise (if using) and saffron and stir in, frying for a minute or two. Add the tomato puree and cook, stirring constantly for about another minute. Drain the beans into a large colander and rinse well with cold water, giving them a good mix as you do. Drain well and add all the beans, along with the chopped tomatoes into the pan, giving it all a good stir as you do before pouring in the coconut milk. Stir well and bring up to the boil, continuing to stir occasionally. Turn down the heat and then leave it to simmer, stirring occasionally, for around 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the sauce has reduced a bit and thickened. Dependant on the cooking time suggested for your rice and naan breads, get them on to cook at the appropriate time, as the curry is just about ready. Just prior to serving, stir in the chopped fresh coriander and season the curry to taste. Serve with the rice, naans and a dollop of yoghurt.

Eat, move and think your way to

better health with Dr Debbie Saxton

I am now in my 20th year of practice and my views on health and chiropractic have changed hugely over those years. When I left college I thought chiropractic had the answer to everything, but I wasn’t in practice long before I realised it didn’t! Why did some patients get well and not others? I searched for answers in new techniques and courses and broadened my knowledge hugely but always came back to the same question that every patient asked – What caused my problem? Well the honest answer to this is “you did!” We all become the product of what we do in our lives and understanding the reality to patients problems has led me into an area of Wellness health care not just purely chiropractic i.e. restoration of health not just pain alleviation. I appreciate the enormous benefit chiropractic care has to offer but now understand fully the role it plays in healthcare. I have been studying with a world leader in Wellness health care for the last few years and am thrilled to be bringing a series of lectures to the area. The format for the events are free Introductory talks that introduce you to the idea of Health care and not sickness care, and help explain why some people get sick and others don’t….and just how we’ve got it so wrong. Then there is a series of talks addressing three areas: how we Eat, Move and Think. In each of these individual talks, the separate areas will be addressed in detail. Most excitingly is the opportunity to bring a full day workshop to Ripon, all three topics will be covered in individual lectures, exercise sessions will be given and the food we eat will start you on the road to understanding how we can eat delicious, nutritious food that will keep our bodies functioning perfectly. It is an exceptional opportunity for the people in this area to learn how to prevent chronic ill health and for me an extremely exciting time in my career. Any further details can be obtained by contacting the clinic, but in summary there is – An introductory talk on November 7th in Harrogate. A Move Well talk on 11th November in Harrogate. A Workshop day on 15th November here in Ripon.

I look forward to seeing anyone at any of the events that has an interest in their Health. No fads, no dieting, just an action plan for great health … for life. Eat, Move and Think your way to Better Health! E-mail: [email protected]

Now is a good time to consider asking for professional help. Marwood Landscapes is a Ripon-based hard landscaping company that have been solving garden problems for householders for over 12 years. Run by Antony Marshall, the company has an excellent well-established reputation for quality work and a comprehensive portfolio which shows just what Antony and his team are capable of. Antony has always loved gardening and spent a lot of time working as a plantsman at a local nursery, Orchard House at Wormald Green. This love of plants led on to an interest in design and hard landscaping and how all aspects of a garden must fit together to produce a beautiful yet practical garden. “We start with a chat with the homeowners to find out what they really want from their garden and how they want to use it, and also how much maintenance they want to do in the future,” explains Antony. “Of course we also take into account the style and location of the house, the shape of the land and the client’s budget.” A free initial consultation and preliminary design sketch is prepared, which allows the clients to envisage just what can be achieved, and the concepts and ideas can be honed from there. Each garden that Marwood Landscapes build is a unique design, custom-made for that property and to the homeowners wishes. Antony can suggest ideas that clients might not have considered, such as water features, decorative features or statement sculptures, as well as give experienced advice on all the other

aspects of garden planning. It is a very creative process. Once the garden is finished, the clients are given full details of each plant and its care instructions and tips on future maintenance. Much time goes into the careful selection and positioning of materials and plants to ensure that the garden develops and matures over time to look its best. “The wide knowledge of plants that I learnt working as a plantsman means that I can confidently predict how the plants in the garden are going to look in one, two, five or ten year’s time,” continues Antony, “a common mistake is placing plants in the wrong areas where conditions aren’t right for them, so they fail to thrive or even die...or else the plants are the wrong colour and so spoil the colour blend of the garden, or grow too large for their position and in time the balance of the garden is lost. We avoid these mistakes and develop a garden for them which ticks all the boxes and continues to look fantastic year after year.” There is a bewildering array of hard landscaping materials available these days, which can make it difficult to decide which to choose. In order to showcase the range of products (and demonstrate how they look in situ rather than trying to guess from a catalogue photo), Marwood Landscapes have teamed up with Boroughbridge Brick and Tile (on Milby Lane, tel 01423 324626) have laid out a show garden. Visitors are encouraged to take a wander around it and take a look at all the choices in materials. This makes it easier to decide which they like best and which would suit their own garden. Antony and his team also install indoor paving and tiles, so if your kitchen, hallway or conservatory needs a new floor, they can help. Tax-Saving Tips for Couples - Part One 25

Here’s the start of a new series guiding you through the basics of how you can save tax as a couple. I hope you enjoy it! The Basics of Taxation for Couples The transfer of income must be absolutely genuine in order to work effectively. You have to trust your partner! If you’re not willing to share you’re wealth (some people have good reason for this) this will hamper creative tax planning. If you don’t trust your partner, a higher tax bill is better than the risk of losing everything! Your legal status makes an enormous difference to your tax planning. If you’re married or in a civil partnership, you have a special tax status. If either you, your spouse or both of you are in business (even if you’re only renting out a property you own), there are tons more opportunities to save tax! If you’re separated, divorced, or one of you dies, you have a different status with different opportunities to save tax. Understanding Tax Bands Each of you has a tax-free allowance of £6035 (Personal Allowance) You then pay 20% on the next £36000 (They call it a Basic Rate!) Anything above this is taxed at a whopping 40% (Higher Rate) Keep in mind that these rates do not apply to all types of income (the government takes great pleasure in making it as complicated as possible) - Income from is dividends is taxed differently, and there’s a 10% rate of tax if your taxable non-savings income is under £2320 Doubling Your Allowances Each of you has the following Tax Allowances that you can use to simply double your tax relief every year: Income Tax: The personal allowance, and the basic

rate band Capital Gains Tax: An Annual Exemption (£9,600), plus Private letting relief Inheritance Tax: The Nil Rate band, Annual Exemption and Small Gifts Exemption National Insurance: The Small Earnings Exemption for class 2 NICs Maximum Tax Savings for couples using Tax Bands and Allowances On Capital Gains Tax Just over £11,000 Annually Plus £16,000 per property (using private letting relief) On Income Tax £9600 on rental income Over £7,000 on self-employed profits (this includes savings on National Insurance) £9400 on Dividend income Over £9,600 on Savings Income On Inheritance Tax £125,000 (on death) £1,200 on lifetime gifts £100 on small lifetime gifts £2000 per child, at the time of their marriage These figures represent maximum savings if the couple’s joint income is about £80,000 per year. But couples who earn less are also able to make considerable savings in many different ways. So, having worked out just what your potential for tax-saving is, as a couple, we shall from now onwards focus on how to maximize this potential! See you next month.

Since 1997, the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) has promoted a special week in November to make the public aware of the fact that more than 4,000 British children are waiting in care to be adopted in the UK. Many are siblings, children with special needs or ethnic minorities. The Chief Executive of the BAAF, David Holmes says “The process of adopting is rigorous, as it needs to be, but there are no blanket bans so please don’t think you’ll be turned down because you are single, over 40 or don’t own your own home. What these children need are people who can offer a supportive, loving family environment to them for life...people who can help a child recover from the reasons they came into care in the first place and then help them grow and thrive in their new families.” During this week, a variety of events are planned around the UK which aim to highlight and publicise the idea of adoption and to encourage prospective adopters are asked to come forward and learn more about how the process works. There is a national information day in Leeds on November 26th where a number of regional adoption

agencies will be attending. If you are interested in going, please call 0870 750 2173. Adoption is a lifelong commitment to a child - or children - and this isn’t always easy, but it can be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. For more information about what is involved in adopting or fostering, please go to www.nationaladoptionweek.org.uk and see also www.bemyparent.org.uk for featured children in care who are waiting for a new family.

Last month at the end of October, the team at Ripon Natural Health Centre gathered together with clients and supporters to celebrate their 25th anniversary of founding the Centre. The Centre occupies a suite of rooms above Boots, which are accessed through a side door located just through the archway off the Market Place. At RNHC, clients can benefit from homeopathy, osteopathy, acupuncture and aromatherapy. Recently added to the Centre were past life regression and reiki therapy, which are both proving incredibly popular. The experienced team of eight therapists can offer treatment to clients suffering from musculo-skeletal injuries or pain, which encompasses a wide range of conditions. Chronic pain and the mental and physical effects of stress are also major reasons why clients seek treatment. Clients are very welcome to approach the Centre directly although some are referred by their GPs. “Since we first founded the Centre, we have seen the therapies we specialise in become increasingly accepted by mainstream health services in general. These days we see complementary and alternative therapies working closely alongside traditional approaches,” says Jocelyn Young. “Here in Ripon we’ve had a huge amount of support and welcome from the local community since the very earliest days of the Centre opening, which we are very thankful for.” Mark thinks that their longevity is due in part to the individual service they can give their clients. “We are a small and personal business and work well as a team,” he says “and have an optimum balance between the size of the Centre and the services we offer. We take the time to really listen and understand our clients mental, physical and emotional needs without imposing our own views, and so can develop a close working relationship based on trust, communication and flexibility.” Looking forward to 2009, the team plan to offer a variety of courses on meditation, massage and homeopathic first aid, which introduces the methods of treating basic illnesses such as coughs and colds with homeopathic remedies. A new topic for 2009 is biography, which is the study of life patterns and critical life stages and how to help yourself deal with them. This includes life stages such as adolescence or menopause. “Through this course, people can gain more insight into themselves and their own health, and then take steps to prevent themselves becoming ill in the first place,” says Mark. “We’d all like to acknowledge and thank all our supporters and clients who have helped make Ripon Natural Health Centre a success for twenty five years, and hope we continue to see them all and work together to improve their health and wellbeing in the future.”

“I don’t want to make a fuss...but…” Time and again I find that our good old fashioned British reserve is really not doing us any favours. In this article I will outline some all too common examples, where you really need to put yourself first.

Road Accidents. If you have a car accident, even a minor one, please make sure you get the name and address of the other driver. Clients often say: “I never thought to ask” or “I have their mobile number, isn’t that enough?” No its not. Ensure you get a name and address and don’t let your policy of polite reserve get the better of you. Why is this important? If the accident was not your fault you will want the other driver to compensate you for your damaged vehicle and possibly your injury.

Why the name and address? If they don’t pay up you may need to sue them (or at least write to them threatening proceedings) which is difficult without their name and address. Don’t forget lots of vehicle are driven on Fleet motor insurance purchased by their employer, so the address of the insured might be an employer not the actual driver’s address. It is always advisable to get the home address of the other driver, just in case. Don’t be fobbed off by an offer of a mobile phone number written on the back of a cigarette packet. Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 requires the driver (no-one else) to give their name and address following an accident to anyone who reasonably requests it. To fail to do so is an offence. And while we are on the subject of RTAs…a picture is worth a thousand words. Many of us have cameras built into our mobile phones. If you have an accident, why not take a few photos of the other vehicle, including its registration plate. That way it’s difficult for the driver to say he was never there. If you have a car accident you should also tell

your insurer without delay. As long as you are not claiming on your policy it should not affect your no claims discount. If it’s the other drivers fault you will be claiming on his policy and not yours. If you have Legal Expenses Insurance a lawyer will be appointed for you by your insurer. However you do not have to accept that nomination. You can choose to be represented by your friendly local solicitor (that would be me) if you so choose. So if you would prefer to use your local solicitor, insist on it. “I took a product back to a shop but the assistant says I am not entitled to a refund as I have no receipt.” There are two issues here. If the goods are faulty, you have a right to a refund as long as you take them back within a reasonable time. What is a reasonable time depends on the product. If the good are not faulty, you just have changed your mind or the goods are not suitable for you, you do not have a right to an exchange or refund – it’s at the discretion of the retailer. Some do offer this, but it is over and above your statutory rights. So, assuming there is a fault with the goods, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 says goods should be of ‘satisfactory quality’. If they are not, your remedy is either a refund or exchange depending on how bad the defect is. Whether you still have the receipt or not is less of an issue if you can prove you did buy the goods from that retailer (if it is an ‘own brand good, for example). Also for larger items (say a television) you may have purchased it using a credit card, and there will be a corresponding entry in your monthly statement confirming where, when and what you bought. A special word of warning relating to cars –especially second hand ones. Never was the maxim ‘caveat emptor’ (let the buyer beware) more relevant. The Sale of Goods Act does apply to cars – the same as other goods, but you will seldom have a right to reject the car even if it subsequently breaks down. This is because you lose the right to reject the goods once you are deemed to have accepted them. And with used cars you don’t get very long (according to the law) before you are deemed to have accepted the goods. So always insist on a long test drive and put the car through its paces before you buy it. If you are looking to buy a used car, unless you are a mechanic yourself, always do two things: 1. Get the car credit checked through a company such as HPI. They will check the car does not have

outstanding finance on it and that it has not been previously damaged in an accident. Ask the selling garage if they HPI’d the car before they bought it, and can you see the report. No garage I have dealt with has ever said no. If the vehicle does have outstanding finance – it still belongs to the finance company, you will therefore not be the legal owner – even though you have paid for it in full. 2. The other thing to do is get the car checked out before you buy it, either by your own garage or one of the motoring organisations which offers this service. Yes it costs a bit more, but if things are flagged in the report, you can use that information to negotiate a reduction in the price of the car. Don’t forget, if the car has previously been in an accident you don’t really want to be driving it. “I slipped over in a restaurant. I thought I had only bruised myself (and my pride) but it turns out I have a broken ankle...what should I do?” Very often the injured person is too embarrassed to make a fuss, even if they think the floor was slippery, covered in spilled drinks or whatever. They generally just want to go home, so they don’t report it. It’s important to report any accident to the manager. At least they should do something about the slippery floor so someone else doesn’t fall as well. The manager should also put the details of the incident into the Accident Book, that way the fall is logged and the premises owner will not be able to deny the fact of the fall later on. If you want to make the matter further, by sending a letter of complaint, for example, if there is no entry in the accident book the owner is likely to deny all knowledge of the incident.

Ritchie is a stunning looking male dog who is believed to be a border collie cross Dalmatian. He came into the Jerry Green Dog Rescue centre at Catton near Thirsk as his owners didn’t have enough time to care for him. He is quite a large dog about four years old and is looking for an active home where he would get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, as he is a lively and intelligent dog. Ideally his new home would not have any other pets or children. He is house trained and walks nicely on the lead. If you'd like to know more about Ritchie or any of the other dogs in our centre needing good homes, please call 01845 567456 or visit between 1.30pm and 4pm any day except Wednesdays. Also online at www.jerrygreendogs.org.uk

Ritchie says hello!
