In NUTRICIA we pay special attention to education concerning baby and toddler nutrition
because we are convinced that nutrition is an investment in the health of future generations. Studies supported by
the NUTRICIA Foundation show that dietetic knowledge is still insufficient. At the same time, more and more experts
highlight the fact that we can influence baby’s health and development from conception and even earlier, from the time
when parents start thinking about enlarging their family. We are greatly involved in initiatives aimed at acquiring a deeper
insight into baby and toddler diet in Poland. We support doctors and parents at every stage of parenthood by offering
them reliable evidence-base knowledge. And above all, we share the information in a clear and straightforward way.
Educational activities matter for us because we believe that healthy babies make healthy future.
Adam Aleksiejuk Medical Director, Medical Nutrition Division,
NUtrICIA poland
In NUTRICIA, we know that food quality significantly influences our health.
We also know that patient nutrition is the key to effective treatment. Being the leader
of the Polish medical nutrition market, we feel responsible for education concerning medical nutrition. Apart from
top quality products, we offer a well-structured training system for health care professionals, patients and NUTRI-
CIA employees. Within our structures, we have established a specialised medical department dedicated to specific
therapeutic issues such as: commercial enteral nutrition formulas, allergology, oncology, rare diseases (e.g. phenyl-
ketonuria), neurological conditions (e.g. cerebral stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, paediatric cerebral palsy), preoperative
period and advanced enteral nutrition devices (such as tubes and pumps). Our educational activities are both local
and national in scope. Reliable consumer information lies at the foundation of our business development. We offer
high quality products and, at the same time, deliver knowledge and solutions for patients and health care professio-
nals. Supporting medical nutritional in Poland is our priority.

Nutrition is the key factor determining human health. Bad eating habits cause adverse health consequences
in smallest children and increase the risk of civilisation diseases – such as diabetes mellitus and cardiac
conditions – in adulthood. The report of KPMG made in cooperation with the NUTRICIA Foundation1 shows
that we are already facing epidemics of these diseases. It is forecasted that in 2030, the total cost of diabetes
and heart diseases treatment will exceed above 23 billion euro annually. Bad nutrition in infancy and adultho-
od causes health problems in Polish population and hits the national economy.
These alarming forecasts motivate us to undertake new initiatives in nutritional education. Good nutrition is impor-
tant at every stage of life, irrespective of health condition. We believe that it is better to be safe than sorry so
we educate pregnant women, parents and caretakers of the smallest children. We also stress the need of appropriate
nutrition in sickness as an important factor facilitating the therapy. Out activities are targeted at all age groups.

The NUTRICIA Foundation – health protection and promotion through nutrition
In NUTRICIA, we are convinced that good nutrition is the key to ensure adequate life
quality. Thanks to the activity of the NUTRICIA Foundation, for 18 years we have been
able to protect, promote and guarantee health through nutrition is three areas:
• human nutrition research• dietetic education for the society• dietetic education for health care professionals

Scientific Council Chairman,
NUTRICIA Foundation
This year, for the 18th time, we have assessed scientific projects submitted in grant com-
petitions. We hope that by choosing the best ones we will be able to continue to satisfy
the main objective of the Foundation and Scientific Board that is to raise the quality
of scientific and clinical research in Poland and – with rational financing – increase access
to scientific studies for paediatricians, including young doctors. Among other activities of
our Foundation and Scientific Board we should mention short and long-term foreign study
grants. Grant beneficiaries have acquired skills that they can now use in Polish clinics and
hospitals. The Foundation and Scientific Board, with their 18 years of activity, are now
a permanent point in the calendar of grant competitions in Poland and without doubt they
have contributed to the improvement of the quality of submitted projects and enhancement
of clinical trial standards.

▼ Workshops on feeding disorders We see a need to help children struggling with feeding disorders. It is estimated that the problem concerns infants
and babies till 3-4 years of life who refuse to eat, cannot eat or have eating problems. In response to this issue,
a team of experts from the Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Immunology Clinic of the Children’s Memorial Health
Institute has developed workshops on feeding disorders with the objective of preparing specialist teams to care for
patients with feeding disorders. The workshops are organised and funded by the NUTRICIA Foundation.
▼ The Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) CourseWe are convinced that continuous education
and qualification increase ensure development.
That is why every year we initiate the EBM Course
(Evidence-Based Medicine) concerning medical
research planning. The two-day programme
includes lectures and workshops on the clinical
trial theory and practice. Participants of the seminar
acquire comprehensive knowledge of research

Infancy is a very important period for shaping eating habits. The key is the way babies are fed.
However a study conducted by the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in cooperation with
the NUTRICIA Foundation has demonstrated as follows:
Properly composed, well-balanced and varied diet of a child older than 1 year influences their development and
contributes to reduction of diet-dependent disease risk at senior age – obesity, cardiovascular diseases,
diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Experts directed by Prof. Halina Weker from the Institute of Mother and Child
in cooperation with the NUTRICIA Foundation made a study report in 2011 which demonstrated areas for improve-
ment with respect to awareness of baby feeding principles.
We share our knowledge to support adequate baby and toddler nutrition
The NUTRICIA Foundation has supported two important studies by experts from removed Polish
centres who assessed baby and toddler nutrition in Poland.

Food Banks
Food Banks regularly provide food to parents and caretakers of small children in difficult
situation. Studies of the NUTRICIA Foundation have revealed gaps in nutritional knowledge
in poor families too. Thus we have decided to take part in the First 1000 Days programme.
Face to face meetings, workshops and consultancy are the simplest and most effective
ways to share knowledge and experiences. Last year we educated 2000 people. In 2014,
we are extending our activities and start cooperating with hospitals, nurseries and universities.
Thanks to the cooperation with the NUTRICIA Foundation in the First 1000 Days programme,
Food Banks have attracted more partners and volunteers. The project is a very precious
experience for Food Banks.

Educational programmes in response to real needs
▼ Eating healthily – growing healthily This educational programme was initiated in 2011 in response to alarming results of studies concerning baby
and toddler nutrition. Our activity is targeted at nursery personnel who in special way care for baby nutrition.
In the framework of the programme, among other initiatives, we offer training for nursery staff and educational
competitions. Nursery employees can also receive an electronic newsletter with current information on baby
nutrition. Representatives of nurseries and parents who register in the programme can benefit form precious
support in shaping healthy eating habits in babies below 3 years of life.

giving birth to the child. The fundamental tool is
an on-line questionnaire for mothers and expecting
women. The questionnaire gathers insights into

NUTRICIA For health care professionalsWe support doctors and specialists during face-to face meetings, workshops and conferences and by providing
them with recent scientific reports. We develop on-line platforms for doctors to present reliable evidence-based
medical information.
▼ The NUTRICIA scientific symposium The NUTRICIA Baby Nutrition Scientific Symposium - an annual conference organised since 2010 – provides
a platform for recent medical report sharing. The main topics of the ‘Early childhood and later quality of life’
conference in 2012 were: infant and toddler nutrition and its impact on health as well as social and economic
consequences of bad diet in early childhood.

The Medical Nutrition Division of NUTRICIAto promote knowledge on patient and senior nutritionMedical nutrition makes an integral part of effective therapy. Its main objective is to provide the patient with extra
nutrients that he or she is not able to absorb with food. Our experience shows that the knowledge on medical
nutrition in society is not adequate. That is why we emphasise the need of education of patients – children, adults,
seniors, patients and their families – concerning good nutrition in different medical conditions.
▼ Oncological Package For the StartThis project has been developed and executed by
the Medical Nutrition Division of NUTRICIA.
In 2013 and at the beginning of 2014 it was one of
the main actions in our company targeted at oncological
patients. The idea behind the For the Star Package was
to provide patients beginning their anti-tumour therapy
with information and advice on what to eat during treat-
ment, how to manage side effects and how to support
their organism during disease. The Oncological Package
For the Start included informational materials and ‘Feeding in Oncological Disease’ and ‘Facts and Myths of
Oncological Disease’ manuals. The manuals included useful information for patients and caretakers on how to ensu-
re proper nutrition during disease. Additionally, every package included Nutridrink Compact Protein
– a special medical nutrition preparation for oncological patients.
▼ The Healthy Seniors CampaignThe Healthy Seniors Campaign is a national action addressed at old people
focused on a range of aspects of senior life. NUTRICIA, as a strategic partner
of the campaign, has become engaged in activities targeted at education on senior patient nutrition. This issue is
often underestimated whereas nutrition plays a very important role during therapy, especially in seniors and people
with diseases, especially chronic ones. During the campaign, between October and December 2013 a range of
promotional activities were undertaken, such as press conferences, advertisement spots, lectures at the University
of the Third Age and meetings with seniors in shopping centres in different cities of Poland. Seniors were informed
about the impact of diet on health. An important tool in the campaign was the zdrowiwiekowi.pl website. Its users
had access to articles on topics tackled during the campaign. The campaign was joined by many experts and public
figures, e.g. jolanta kwaśniewska, Andrzej Supron and krystyna Czubówna.

in 2011. It is one of the ways to manifest our Best Care policy the objective
of which is to ensure best care for our patients and their families. The website is intended to educate and support
senior and patient caretakers by providing them with access to information on diseases, good nutrition and care
in disease and patient assistance. The website gives access to individual advice of experts in different fields:
doctors, psychologists, therapist and legal advisor. For more information read: www.opiekanadchorym.pl.

Phenylketonuria is a genetically conditioned phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency that
blocks phenylalanine conversion to tyrosine. Patients with phenylketonuria, from diagnosis
throughout their life have to apply low-phenylalanine diet to prevent deep intellectual
disability. Patient education consists in informing them about the required diet, the ways
to introduce new low-phenylalanine foods and methods to diversify their menu.
It is tremendously important for women with phenylketonuria who prepare for pregnancy
to strictly observe the diet in order to prevent congenital disorders in the baby. Already
at school age, phenylketonuria patients should be informed that if they disobey the diet
at puberty they should introduce it again prior to conception.

▼ NUTRICIA supports Harold Harold, the sheep in a hospital is a project that prepares children for hospitalisation
and supports their parents with the necessary information. The book written
by Małgorzata Ohme, a paediatric psychologist and psychotherapist, informs
the smallest patients about rules of hospital stay. Harold, the sheep talks about
what happens in hospital wards and helps children understand that hospitalisation
is not a punishment but a way to quick recovery. The project includes also: a website
– Small Patient Compendium – and a lovely soft toy, Harold the sheep, that cares for
small patients in hospitals. NUTRICIA supports the programme in several ways -
by financing book reprinting, production of Harold soft toys and establishment
of Harold Play Room in the paediatric ward of Siemianowice Hospital.

NUTRICIA for years has supported educational programmes for doctors, dieticians and pharmacists. Together
we try to broaden the knowledge on medical nutrition, malnutrition and diet-dependent metabolic diseases.
Since 2013, NUTRICIA has been the main sponsor of the Nutrition in Oncology Academy. This is a project implemen-
ted in cooperation with the Polish Oncology Society and the Polish Society of Parenteral Nutrition, Enteral Nutrition
and Metabolism with the objective of educating oncologists in the biggest oncological centres in Poland. In this
way we want to tackle the subject of the role of nutrition in oncological therapy. Till today, the Academy programme
has been participated by 500 doctors from different parts of Poland. Moreover, for several years, in cooperation
with doctors from local centres, we have been organising regional meetings to extend the knowledge and share
experiences associated with medical nutrition. In 2013 we focused on the role of medical nutrition in neurological
patient therapy. The Eastern European Metabolic Society (EEMA) is an initiative that for the last 5 years has grouped
doctors who treat rare metabolic diseases (such as phenylketonuria) in the Central and Eastern Europe.
By supporting the conference, NUTRICIA facilitates experience sharing in dietetic management of rare disorders.

Opole in cooperation with Opole University students tutored kids form the Orphanage
in Tarnów Opolski. During the sixth edition of the programme children visited
the Collegium Maius and University Museum. Awards for good scores in school
were handled by Andrzej Drosik, Director at NUTRICIA Opole and Prof. Andrzej Ciuk,
Dean of Philology Faculty. The ‘Language and Heart’ programme is a part of the
‘Supporting Life’ campaign of NUTRICIA. We want to show children the opportunities
that our own, systematic work can give. We are convinced that this form of support
to children will bear fruit in future.
For many years NUTRICIA has been engaged in activities supporting phenylketonuria
patients. One of our recent initiatives is the PkUconnect.pl portal – a unique space
designed to satisfy the needs of people with phenylketonuria. The portal offers:
•PkUpedia – a database with information on the disease•Database of low-protein recipes•Cooking blog run by teenagers with phenylketonuria•Database of phenylketonuria-friendly places (restaurants, kindergartens, hotels in which people with phenylketonuria can eat low-protein meals)

MUMMY, TOGETHER WE CAN learn How To breasTfeeD!
Under this slogan, in May 2014, we started a new edu-
cational campaign of the First 1000 Days programme
run by the NUTRICIA Foundation. Breastfeeding is an
important element in the early life nutrition programming.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends ex-
clusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months and its
continuation after weaning even till the child is 2 years old. Mothers have
very different experiences with breastfeeding. Sometimes the success in natural
feeding is not instant and mothers have to repeat their attempts many times.
We want to make women aware of the fact that breastfeeding can be learned.
In the educational campaign titled ‘Mummy, together we can learn how to
breastfeed’, being a part of the First 1000 Days programme, we have prepared
and implemented the following activities:
•A questionnaire-based study on breastfeeding on nearly 3,500 mothers and pregnant women
•Educational workshops for parents and future parents organised by grant beneficiaries across Poland
•Educational posters and congratulation cards available in maternity hospitals across Poland
• Educational media campaign.More information of healthy diet during the first 1000 days, educational materials
and practical tools are available at: www.1000dni.pl.
‘PaTIenTs for PaTIenTs’ CAMPAIGN
‘Patients for Patients’ is an educational campaign designed by the Polish Coalition of Oncolo-
gical Patients whose main partner is NUTRICIA. The campaign provides education to onco-
logical patients on healthy nutrition in oncological disease and informs about medial nutrition
products. The activity was started in March 2014 and will continue till the end of this year.
So far, 9 meetings were held and each of them was attended by ca. 40-50 patients.
The following 7 meetings will take place in the second half of 2014.
One of the assumptions in the campaign, suggested by its name, was to talk to patients
in their own language – every person leading the meeting has or had oncological disease.
Thus the meeting leader not only makes a lecture on nutrition in oncological disease but
also shares their experiences associated with the therapy and runs the discussion.
The campaign has been offered the patronage of the Polish Clinical Oncology Society.
