The semester one report provides you with a snapshot of your child’s academic achievements using the descriptions of outstanding, high, sound, basic and limited in each key learning area. These various levels of achievement are an important indicator of your child’s progress at school. As you know, these descriptors correspond to a five point A-E scale. Remember that a ‘sound’ grade (C) means a child is on track. As a result their report grade will most likely indicate a lower level than they achieved in the previous year. give you the proportion of children in the group in the relevant achievement levels. If you would like this information, please contact the Assistant Principal for your child’s year. Our commitment is to provide a meaningful report to parents that focuses on what your child can do and fosters the wellbeing of all students. Given this we are asking parents to email any feedback on the reporting process.

Activitython Thank You Congratulations to class 5D, who raised the most money from the Activitython and will receive a pizza party prize. Congratulations to the following students, who raised the most monies individually, for their outstanding efforts: namely Sam Warburton KC, Annabelle Bissaker 5P, Zac Georgalis KR, Alexander Georgalis 3A and James Georgalis 5D.

Recognition of the Canteen Congratulations to Eugenie and the school canteen, who have met the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy requirements. The canteen was assessed against a government criteria and the findings included:

At least 75% of the menu is classified as ‘Everyday’ and no more than 25% of the menu are ‘Occasional’ foods and drinks.

All the Occasional packaged foods and drinks in the canteen have a Health Star Rating of 3.5 Stars and above.

Portion limits were met for all Occasional foods and drinks and Everyday flavoured milk, juices and hot meals on the menu.

The canteen displays prices favourably, promotes and advertises only Everyday choices.

Sugar-sweetened drinks are not sold in the school canteen or in vending machines.

Suggestions were made on how our school can achieve an even healthier canteen. We would like to thank Eugenie and the P&C for their ongoing support of the school and parent community in providing the school canteen.

Tickets for Stage 2 Performance

Tickets for the Stage 2 evening performance of Lights, Camera, Action! are sold out. Even so, there are tickets available for the matinee performance at 1pm. If any family has purchased tickets for the evening performance that they no longer need, please return them to the front office for a refund. Families will be alerted to any tickets made available to the school.

Use of the playgrounds after school As part of the lease for before and after school care, Gowrie NSW uses the school hall and school playgrounds after school. Families are asked to vacate the playgrounds to allow Gowrie to run their programs outside. Please remind children who are waiting for after school activities (language classes, music lessons) to wait at

the front of the school. This is a ‘waiting time not a playing time’ as there are no teachers on playground duty after school. Ethics Classes I would like to sincerely thank each faithful teacher of our Ethics program who each week take classes across the school. If you would like to find out more about Ethics classes at the school and how you could help, please

contact Nicky Batt on [email protected]

With best wishes for the week ahead,

The Forest by 2K

2K have written a senses poem based on the story 'The Fox and the Star' by Coralie Bickford-Smith. They have used sight, smell, sound and emotion to describe being in the forest. Similes, descriptive noun groups and vivid verbs were added to enhance their poems. Please stop by my office to see their outstanding classwork!

KEEPING SAFE ONLINE This week Senior Constable James Bottalico, our police youth liason officer, conducted a parent seminar on ways to ensure our children remain safe when engaging with mobile phones, iPads and other devices. Practical strategies to use at home include:

creating a family contract together (see website below)

tailoring access to specific sites, apps and features

using a paraphrase instead of a password

know the age restrictions - users of Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube are required to be 13 years old

ensure privacy settings are enabled to mitigate unwanted contact

know who your child is ‘friends with’ online

be aware of how to block and report on the games, apps and site your child is using

keep devices away from bedrooms and have a public area where they are kept overnight

Active monitoring is important when allowing children to engage with technology. Looking for teachable moments to inform our children of dangers and highlighting the importance of time away from the screen is a great reminder for every parent. We encourage our students to

come to you, their teacher or a trusted adult if they see something online that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Please refer to the parent fact sheet on https://www.thinkuknow.org.au where further recommendations can be found.

DIM WINTER SOIREE

On Monday night, family and friends filled the hall for the Directions in Music Winter Soiree. The Junior and Senior Bands, Junior and Senior Strings and Stage 2 Choir performed a variety of items they have been working on over the semester. It was fantastic to see how far all groups have come this year and the amount of time students have put into practicing their instruments was obvious. A special thanks to our Directions in Music tutors and conductors, as well as Ms Arruzza and Ms Champion, for helping our students on their music journey. We look forward to hearing their continued progress later this year.

DEBATE REPORT On the 26th June, Drummoyne PS debated Birchgrove PS in the inner-west debating tournament. The topic was:`We should all be vegetarian’. The speakers for the Affirmative team were: 1st Ava Burns Bonnici, 2nd: Allegra Lattuca, 3rd: Marirose Giann and team advisor Aaliyah Didzar. The speakers for the Negative team were: 1st Celina Kessel 2nd: Alexa Salmon, 3rd: Isobel Mclauclan and team advisor: Stephanie Mcguire.

Both teams presented their case strongly, winning both debates. Birchgrove were gracious in defeat here and at their school. The speakers on the day, chosen by the team advisors were: Ava Burns Bonnici from the affirmative team, who included exceptional statistics, and presented it with confidence. As for the negative team, both Isobel McLauchlan and Madeline Vaughan were chosen as speakers of the day, Madeline helped write her speech and Isobel presented it beautifully.

We would also like to thank Ria Giann and Jada Dizdar for driving the Affirmative team to Birchgrove Public School.

SCHOOL NEWS

Student Attendance Regular school attendance is a priority in all schools and ensures the best chance for children to achieve their full potential. The Department of Education has reminded the school of procedures that are to be followed when a student is late to arrive or absent from school.

Whole Day Absence

If a student is absent from school for the whole day, a note is to be returned with the student on the first day of the students’ return to school and handed to the class teacher for recording on the class roll. This is in keeping with the Department of Education’s policy.

A verbal notification by phone or email to the school on the day of absence/or prior is also supported and will be forwarded to the class teacher.

The school will follow up absences if a notification has not been made within 2 days.

Partial Day Absence

Students arriving after the bell are expected to go to the school office to be marked as late to school and the reason will be recorded. They are given a late notice and this is handed in to the teacher on arrival to class.

Students requiring an early pickup are called to the office after the parents have notified the office staff. The reason for the absence is entered on the roll and recorded as an absence.

Reports Class 1A reports will go home today, Friday, with other class reports to follow next week.

2020 Kindergarten Enrolments Applications are now being accepted for Kindergarten 2020. If your child turns 5 before July 31, 2020 they are eligible to start school next year. We would appreciate if our local area enrolments would submit their

applications as soon as possible. This will allow us to determine if we have any ‘out of area’ places available. Please let your friends and neighbours know.

School Bus Routes & Timetables For information about the school bus routes, timetables and Opal cards, or to give feedback on these services please go to the Transport for NSW website: https://transportnsw.info/routes/bus

For lost property please contact them on 131 500, otherwise contact the Leichhardt Depot.

Lost Property As part of the year 6 leadership program, two groups of students will be looking after lost property and returning items twice a week to students’ classrooms. They can only return a child’s hat, lunchbox, jumper etc. if it is clearly labelled with the child’s full name. All unnamed and unclaimed lost property will be cleared regularly.

Entertainment Books

Each year we raise vital funds for our school and the children via selling Entertainment Books or Entertainment Mobile Membership (mobile apps).

There is a limited number of books available for pick up from the school office, however the digital (mobile app) version of the membership is highly recommended as it can be shared between several people. The cost of the book/ digital membership is $70 and the school receives 20% ($14).

Also, if you have a digital membership and are travelling to other major cities in Australia, NZ or Bali, you can purchase a 30-day Holiday Digital Membership for $30 to save on your holidays.

Recently, I saw a mother give a simple, yet profound resilience lesson to her school-aged child, after he missed a much-anticipated excursion due to poor behaviour at school. Replying to the child’s protests about teacher unfairness and his over-reaction to missing out on a learning opportunity his mum simply replied, “Oh well!” Then she busied herself with other tasks. The child stunned by her reaction, shrugged and headed off to complete his homework.

Adult reactions matterIt’s in our reactions to children’s and young people’s every day mistakes, mess-ups, muck-ups and hurts where the real lessons in resilience lay.

The lessons for this child were simple but profound. “Oh well” meant:

Stuff happens

Don’t look for fault or blame

Keep your perspective

Pick yourself off and continue with what you were doing

How to reactThe resilience lesson for this mother were equally as profound. When a minor mishap with a child or teenager occurs:

Match your response to the incident

Stay calm and be positive

Don’t look for fault or blame

Remember, stuff happens

Resilience lesson for parents – “Oh well”Every day there are opportunities for parents to give their children lessons in resilience.

A child misses being picked for a team that he had his heart set on joining. “Oh well. Let’s see how you go next time”

When a boy experiences rejection in the playground at school. “Oh well. You’ll find that some people don’t want to be your friend.”

When a teenage girl doesn’t get the mark she thinks she deserves in an assignment. “Oh well. Sometimes we don’t get the marks we think we deserve.”

Match your response to the challenge to promote resilience

There are times when “Oh well” won’t cut it. When a child is bullied he needs your continued support.

When a student’s continuous efforts at improvement are constantly met with criticism then you may need to act on his behalf and meet with a teacher.

When a child always struggles to make the grade and is never picked for a team then you may need to help him make different choices.

These types of situations also present opportunities for daily lessons in resilience, but they require more parental support and teaching.

The resilience lessons learned are deeper and include concepts such as ‘things will eventually go you way,’ ‘there are times when you need to seek help’ and ‘this too shall pass.’

Promoting personal resilience focuses on helping kids cope with life’s hurts, disappointments and challenges in the present, while building strengths for the future.

Daily lessons in resilience are everywhere. You just need to be ready to make the most of these valuable lessons when they come your way.
