Respect, Responsibility, Resilience. Dear Parents/Carers Arts Alive Choir Last Thursday the Senior Choir, accompanied by Miss Chamberlain, performed in the Arts Alive Choral concert at the Opera House. I was very excited to attend again this year and thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I could see our students clearly and they are to be congratulated for their enthusiastic singing and behaviour during the concert. It was a lovely evening and I was a very proud of our students. A big thank you to the parents for attending and making this event possible for their children and especially to Miss Chamberlain for her teaching of the choir and for the time she has dedicated to these students. Holiday Reading Have you visited our office yet and taken home some factsheets on a range of topics from managing social media with children to mindfulness. Please come in and select a few items for your holiday reading. Fact sheets will be replaced by new ones early next term. Resilience Workshop At Oakhill Drive we are working to create a resilient culture for our students through our ‘Quality Relationships and Wellbeing’ Program. A resilient culture is a kind culture that allows students to develop and maintain positive relationships, be accepting and forgiving of themselves and others, bounce back from adversity, manage their emotions, value themselves, appreciate their strengths and be motivated and engaged learners. An increasing number of studies are showing that resilient people are the happiest and most successful in all areas of their lives. To support you as parents in developing resilience in your children we have organised a parent workshop for next term. The workshop will be held at school on Wednesday 7 November from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The workshop will be presented by Learning Links, a charitable not for profit organisation that works collaboratively with schools to support students in their learning and wellbeing. This ‘Developing Resilience in Children’ workshop helps parents gain knowledge about resilience, looks at how it is developed and what external factors can effect resilience. It also looks at how to promote your child’s resilience and examines what resources are available to parents. Please put this date on your calendar. More information will be sent out next term. Resilience Project, who discusses why so many kids are struggling with mental illness and what we can do to help them in TODAY's Agenda. It is a very interesting interview and I recommend it to all parents. https://www.9now.com.au/today/2018/extras/clips/clip-cjlobfcm6002z0snqtg60dj74 Happy Holidays “Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life!” Albert Einstein As the holidays approach, I would like to thank all the teachers and staff at Oakhill Drive for their dedication to our students this term. It has been a very busy term and together we have supported our students to enjoy wonderful experiences and achieve great things. I wish all families a happy and safe holiday. Please spend some time relaxing and enjoying precious family time. The best gift we can give our children is our time, so turn off the devices, get out the board games, go to the park, explore the bushland, garden together etc. and enjoy being together. See you all in Term 4, wearing Summer uniform. Helen Paris Relieving Principal Selective High School Today, Year 5 families received a note in regards to applying for a selective high school in 2020. What are selective high schools? Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, using specialised teaching methods and materials at the appropriate level.

If you are interested in applying for a selective high school (Year 7 in 2020) for your child currently in Year 5, please return the ‘Intention to apply’ note which you received today by this Friday 28 September. An information afternoon on the process of Selective High schools will be held in Term 4 Week 2, Tuesday 23 October, at 4:00pm. An invitation will be sent home in Week 1 of Term 4. If you would like more information about selective high schools please click on the link below: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 Mrs Marsaus and Mrs Brito Relieving Deputy Principal Flexible Learning at Oakhill Drive Public School Metacognition and self-regulation approaches aim to help students think about their own learning more explicitly, often by teaching them specific strategies for planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning. Self-regulated learning can be broken into three essential components:

cognition - the mental process involved in knowing, understanding, and learning; metacognition - often defined as ‘learning to learn’; and motivation - willingness to engage our metacognitive and cognitive skills.

Studies on metacognition and self-regulation approaches have consistently high levels of impact. These strategies are usually more effective when taught in collaborative groups so that learners can support each other and make their thinking explicit through discussion. Last week, I joined a conversation in 5FB where students were reflecting on their learning. It was evident that the students knew what they were learning (to use their knowledge learnt in history to write a creative narrative) and what they had to do to be successful in their learning.

Teachers spend time teaching students to develop their creative and critical thinking to find new solutions by evaluating knowledge and ideas. They also develop students’ personal and social capability through providing opportunities to reflect on their own and others’ learning with increasing confidence and independence. By creating a flexible learning environment, students are encouraged to have sustained dialogue and learn collaboratively. Furniture is now available which is easy to adjust for a range of students and purposes, e.g. by altering its height or reconfiguring it to accommodate a variety of learners. Photos below illustrate some of the furniture recently purchased for our Lib Lab and other traditional furniture which has been customised for our classrooms. With time, we aim to have a greater variety of furniture in classrooms that can easily facilitate choice for students to actively develop self-regulation and metacognition.

Julie Torney Deputy Principal Arts Alive Choir On Thursday 20 September the Stage 3 choir attended Sydney Opera House for the Arts Alive Choral Festival for 2018. All students are to be commended for their commitment to Stage 3 choir. They have given up lunchtimes to rehearse the 10 song repertoire all year. After a huge day of rehearsals, the evening concert was a great success with all students representing Oakhill Drive Public School with pride. A special thank you to all the parents and carers for their support to creative arts and choral performance opportunities for their children. I also thank you for your attendance at the concert and transporting your children at the end of what was a long day! Next term, we are going to start Trash Free Tuesday instead of Waste Free Wednesday. Students are welcome to bring a waste free lunch every day, however, we thought that by changing the days we might see different results. This term teacher and parent volunteers have been taking our disposable plastic bottles, cans and poppers to Return and Earn donation stations which give us 10 cents for every item we recycle. We will provide details next term regarding how these funds will be used. Thank you to all the volunteers that have been helping us with this initiative each week. We appreciate your support!
