FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

Class 1A have been discussing dinosaurs this week …

How much did they weigh? How did they become extinct?

Did they have feathers? Why did they have big teeth?

What did they eat? How long were they?

How many types were there? Where did they lay their eggs?

Why are they so big? How long ago did they live?

Their great artwork is on display outside my office.

STAGE 3 PRESENTATION DAY

Our annual Stage 3 Presentation Day will be held next Tuesday 10 December at 1pm. This is a special assembly for our school community and an important opportunity for us to acknowledge the effort and celebrate the achievement of every student. Teachers observe each day the growth of individual students in many ways, including the areas of social and emotional maturity and academic gains. Underpinning both of these aspects is the hard work and the effort which has contributed to such progress.

On Presentation Day, teachers will be presenting their students with class awards for academic achievement, citizenship and effort. Additional awards, at teacher discretion, will be presented as well as awards by specialist staff.

A special feature of our assembly will be the announcement of 6 major awards. The recipients of these awards are students who have demonstrated qualities consistent with criteria. These include:

• Principal’s Award (Year 6) - Academic effort and achievement. Active participation in class and school activities. Participation in Sport and Performing Arts. Demonstrates citizenship qualities and wears school uniform with pride.

• Frank Marjason Award (Year 5) - A passion for the Arts and a very high level of commitment and dedication towards excellence when participating in creative and performance arts projects as part of the Drummoyne Public School community.

• Young Achiever Award (Year 6) - Academic achievement, diligent worker, demonstrates citizenship qualities and is an excellent role model.

• School Values Award (Year 6) - Consistently demonstrates the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

• Commonwealth Parliamentarian Award (Year 6) - An outstanding student who has made a significant contribution to our community.

• Sydney Secondary College (Balmain) Learning Community Award (Year 6) - A student enrolled at SSC for 2020 for their application, effort and achievement consistent with the school’s values of high expectations and responsibility.

ENRICHMENT

Debating Congratulations to our two debating teams who this week competed against Mercy Catholic College Chatswood's Year 7 and 8 teams. Our students were invited to debate against this high school as the adjudicator was impressed with the skills the Drummoyne teams displayed at an interschool debate last term. After receiving their topic, our debaters had 90 minutes to work together to plan their speeches. This model, although challenging for primary students, was a wonderful opportunity for our Stage 3 students to experience a high school debating competition. Both Drummoyne teams were impressive, with the adjudicator's comments commending our students for their clear definitions, well-structured arguments, the use of examples to support their claims and the appropriate use of eye contact. Both teams won their debates and we were proud of the way each student stepped up and matched their opposition. Congratulations to: Celina Kessal, Isobel McLachlan, Madeleine Vaughan, Ava Watson, Zoe Hayden, Marirose Giann, Allegra Lattuca and Ivy Eastwood.

Visual Arts This week Jonathan Anastasiadis and Gemma Chadwick attended the Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design art workshop for gifted and talented visual arts students. Jonathan and Gemma were nominated by their teacher Ms Dean for this enrichment opportunity where students from a number of schools spent the day working with other high potential students to further their skills under the guidance of passionate and skilled tutors in a specialist studio. Each student learnt dry point etching techniques and experimented with vibrant inks to create two resolved artworks.

ICAS Recently a number of Stage 2 and 3 students participated in the International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS) annual writing, English and mathematics competition. For each assessment, students were nominated by their families and teachers view these assessments as suitable for High Potential students who are willing to complete this independent skills- based assessment outside of school hours. Congratulations to our students who received a Distinction or High Distinction result:

SCRIPTURE CLASS REFLECTIONS

This class has made me a better person in so many different ways. I have opened up to kindness and happiness to lots of my friends, families and even strangers. I am always following sayings from the class such as ‘love god and your neighbour’, ‘thank god for the good things he has already done’ and ‘be grateful for the battles you’ve won’. I have learnt many new ways to show kindness, including smiling and giving many more compliments. I have learnt how to pray with the rosary, I heard stories about God & Jesus and who they are and ways to help everyone. Thank you Mr K for a wonderful year of learning. This class has clearly made me a better person in school and out of school. This year I have learnt more about God and Mary. I have also learnt to give a compliment and give a smile to everyone. Now every night I read a chapter of the bible. It helps me through life and stuff that is going on at home and school that make me sad. This class has taught me so much. Now I basically know the Hail Mary and Our Father prayers and before I didn’t. I’ve been giving compliments every day and putting smiles on people’s faces. I love this class because it has made me a happier more caring and overall better person.

UNIFORM SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The uniform shop needs a few more volunteers to join our small and friendly group. For a tiny commitment (just 50 minutes a fortnight), we promise big rewards (proud

smiles from your kids and a time to catch up with other parents). We’re looking for people most days of the week, so if there’s a day that suits you best, let us know and we’ll pair you up with someone. Or, better yet, pair up with a friend and volunteer as a duo! Shifts run fortnightly from 8:50 to 9:40am, with the shop open 9:00 to 9:30am. During busy times (start of the year and changeover from summer to winter uniforms) shifts may run a little longer. If you’d like to put your hand up or have any questions, please contact Justine Foster at: mailto:[email protected]
