The Weight of the Unknown: Writing from the unconstricted throat

We live in a culture that wants to know—we chart, graph, test, outline, classify, name and judge. But what of all the messiness, mystery and unruly potential that breeds beneath our longing for certainty? What would happen when we engage, as Adrienne Rich writes, with “the weight of the unknown, the untracked, the unrealized?” In this workshop we’ll explore how we might draw strength from “the great muscle of metaphor,” launching our poems and ourselves into the vast realm of possibility. In this workshop, we’ll read poems that lead us deeper into paradox and write our own explorations of what if and what else. Let’s see what even a small bit of wonder might do …

Poetry of Difficult Knowledge

In her essay, “Poetry and Commitment,” A.Rich tells us, “Poetry is not a healing lotion, an emotional massage, a kind of linguistic aromatherapy. Neither is it a blueprint, nor an instruction manual, nor a billboard.”  What, then, in Rich’s view, in yours, is poetry? She characterizes the poet as one committed to “talking back to the world” from a “fearfully alert” space of “difficult knowledge” which offers one’s society an opportunity to change. From the theatre of your own living, how is the personal political? Does poetry need to be overtly political to offer opportunities for social change? In this workshop we will explore all these questions and more in lively discussion and a variety of writing exercises designed to explore your “difficult knowledge.”

"Weighty Words"

Ways to use our words to generate power--the idea being, we don't want to say, I'm in love, tra-la-la; I'm furious; I'm sad. As poets, we want to/need to/must find ways to be evocative, to get our readers/audience to feel/experience/resonate with our words. And we do that by creating feelings and images: the wheelchair-bound couple holding hands and grinning at each other in the nursing home; the bloody shirt on the sidewalk; the skinny, gray-muzzled dog scratching at the door.

“Something I was Forbidden To See”A.Rich writes: But poetry also sometimes finds those who were not looking for it.

Reading these lines a moment after a violent month of reserve duty, which was full of a sense or righteousness of the way, was no easy thing. I remember that for one alarming moment I felt that I was looking at something i was forbidden to see. What this thing was I did not know, but on that same Friday afternoon I went to look for every book by Yitzhak Laor that I could find in the shops.

No Description at this time. But it will be a good workshop, very cerebral.

“Unlocking the Anima Energy Within”

Psychologist Carl Jung has described the Anima as that Feminine energy,

which both men and women can tap into if

they're willing to step out of their controlling

consciousness and into the unconscious realm of the imagination.  During

the workshop we will attempt to get in touch

with the collective unconsciousness among us and to allow the

Anima to reveal the hidden truths

behind our words.

“The Roaring Stillness Across Open Ground”

Don't extinguish the wildfire of your imagination, put it on paper! We will track your writing across open ground to its source. How does it feel, as Jack Hirschman said, to be "soused with words"? We'll also briefly explore wild wordslinging from the Symbolists to the Beats.

As one of Colorado’s best known performance poets, SETH has collaborated with countless musicians, poets, actors, dancers and other performance artists in a never-ending quest to render poetry more entertaining, and thus more accessible, to general audiences.

Valerie Haugen, a practicing poet, is an Associate Artistic Director with Carbondale's Thunder River Theatre Company. She also organizes the annual Karen Chamberlain Poetry Festival. She has performed in over 40 TRTC productions, and serves as the company dramaturg. She builds Literary Night performance pieces for the theatre, and her play “A Tempest of the Mind,” developed with Lon Winston, was produced last year. As part of the Support Women Artists Now celebration, she recently shared excerpts from an autobiographical performance piece about how poetry saves lives .
