Queridos socios: El 2010 será un año clave para el futuro del campo de golf. Aparte de acoger al nuevo Director de Campo Jeff Robinson

como parte del equipo que es el RCG Las Brisas, también nos beneficiaremos de la enorme capacidad de asesoramiento e infraestructura inigualable de STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) de Bingley en el condado de Yorkshire, que supervisará al programa de mantenimiento, en colaboración, por supuesto, con Jeff Robinson. Es la primera vez que Las Brisas haya contratado a tan respetada institución que a lo largo de los años ha establecido nuevas pautas en la industria europea de gestión de césped de golf.

2010 será un año en el que nos miraremos de forma introspectiva, especialmente en cuanto a la financiación se refiere. Será necesario tomar decisiones difíciles y se llevarán a cabo para el bien del Club y sus accionistas. Los tiempos cambian y nosotros también tenemos que cambiar. Lo que antes se consideraba normal ya no lo es. Tenemos que situar al Club en una base económica firme y buscar la forma de recuperar la posición tan destacada que Las Brisas solía ostentar en el golf español. No hay duda de que Las Brisas sigue gozando de una conocida reputación, pero la despiadada realidad es que cuando los visitantes juegan el campo, normalmente quedan decepcionados, y esto es en lo que tenemos que centrarnos. El hecho de que en 2009 Las Brisas atrajo a más socios nuevos que los clubes de Aloha, Los Naranjos, El Paraiso y San Roque Club juntos nos dice que el Club sigue siendo el Club más valorado en Marbella. Sin embargo, la joya más brillante de la corona del RCG Las Brisas solía ser el campo, y eso es lo que quisiéramos

reinvindicar. Conseguir lo anterior costará dinero. Primero, tenemos que liquidar la deuda que tenemos pendiente. Seguidamente, tenemos que aprobar una cuota anual que cubra todos nuestros gastos ordinarios y que nos permita guardar todas las futuras cuotas de admisión exclusivamente para inversiones. Como contraprestación a unas cuotas anuales más altas, yo, como vuestro Director, voy a redactar un plan para evitar todos los gastos que no sean necesarios, reduciendo estos a un mínimo absoluto. Posteriormente, dependerá de la JD el que se apruebe su puesta en marcha o no, lo que inevitablemente dará lugar a algunas decisiones impopulares, aunque procuraré mantener un nivel aceptable. Desde luego no quisiera que el RCG Las Brisas se convirtiera en el “Ryanair” del golf español. Las Brisas goza de un alto nivel de servicios y quisiera mantenerlos. No obstante, para poder realizar esta labor correctamente, no voy a poder hacerlo al gusto de todos. En las

recientes conversaciones con los representantes del sindicato del Club se acordó que se animara a nuestro personal a que hicieran sus propias propuestas para reducir los gastos: medidas que abarcarán desde la reducción de materiales hasta la perfección de rutinas de trabajo. Si actuamos como un equipo, conseguiremos avanzar con mayor propósito e ímpetu.

En cuanto al golf internacional de amateurs, mientras que evidentemente 2008 fue el año de Adrian Morrow, a mayor asombro de todos los corredores de apuestas, ¡2009 resulto ser el año de los que no figuraban entre los favoritos! El equipo Senior alemán de damas (realmente con pocas posibilidades de ganar antes de empezar el Campeonato Europeo del 2009) luchó y venció a los favoritos para quedarse finalmente con tan codiciado trofeo. Nuestra propia Campeona de Señores del Club, Nicolle Eiche Huth formaba parte del victorioso equipo de señoras alemanas. ¡Herzlichen Glückwunsch (Enhorabuena) Nicolle!

Un inglés no sería fiel a sus raíces si no mencionara el tiempo al menos una vez durante el transcurso de una conversación, por lo que tampoco les voy a decepcionar. Faltaría a la verdad si dijera que ha sido el invierno más húmedo de la historia. De hecho la mitad de las precipitaciones de todo un año cayó durante la quincena del 18 de diciembre en adelante.

Nunca se había expuesto el cartel de “Campo cerrado” durante tantos días consecutivos. Aunque procuramos complacer a los socios también tenemos el deber de proteger nuestro campo: Un verdadero campo de minas. El escaso drenaje en ciertas zonas, que se hace más patente cada año, conducirá inevitablemente a más cierres que en años anteriores.

El único aspecto positivo de esta horrorosa secuencia de días lluviosos es que los greens han disfrutado de un muy necesario descanso. Cuando finalmente volvió a abrirse el campo fue muy alentador poder ver unos greenes sin marcas de bolas, y unas calles muy verdes a finales de diciembre después de la resiembra de octubre. Los meses secos de octubre y noviembre habían retrasado la germinación de la semilla de Poa trivialis.

Quisiera terminar deseándoles a todos un exitoso 2010 y a Jeff Robinson un gran principio de su carrera en España.

Dear Members. 2010 is going to be a key year for the future of the golf course. Apart from welcoming the new Course Manager

Jeff Robinson to the RCG Las Brisas fold, we will also be benefitting from the vast advisory capacity and unrivalled infrastructure of STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) from Bingley in Yorkshire to monitor the course maintenance programme, of course working in conjunction with Jeff Robinson. It is the first time that Brisas has contracted such a world renowned, respected institution which has over the years set new benchmarks in the European turf grass management industry.

2010 will be a year where we take an introspective look at ourselves, especially on the financial front. Difficult decisions will have to be made and they will be made for the good of the Club and its shareholders. Times change and we must change with them. What used to be the norm is no longer. Treading water is not good enough, we must put the Club on a sound financial footing and look to regain the prominent position Brisas once commanded in Spanish golf. No doubt Brisas still enjoys a high reputation, but the cruel truth is that visitors are usually disappointed when they play the course and that is where our focus has to be directed. The fact

that in 2009 Brisas attracted more new members than GC Aloha, GC Los Naranjos, GC El Paraiso and The San Roque Club combined tells us that the Club is still very much the Club to join in Marbella. However, the brightest jewel on the crown of RCG Las Brisas used to be the course and that is what we would like to re-establish. This will cost money. Firstly we must clear the debt we currently have. Then we need to arrive at an annual fee which will cover all our overheads and permit us to set aside all future joining fees for investment purposes only. In return for higher annual fees I as manager will be producing a plan to avoid all non essential expenditure, keeping outgoings to an absolute minimum. It will then be up to the EC to approve its implementation. This will inevitably result in some unpopular decisions, but I will try to keep compromises to an acceptable level. The last thing I would want is for RCG Las Brisas to become the Ryanair of Spanish golf. Brisas enjoys high levels of service and I would like

to maintain these. Nonetheless, if I am to carry out this particular task properly, I cannot keep everybody happy. In recent talks with the Club’s union representatives it was agreed that our staff be encouraged to recommend their own cost cutting proposals, ranging from reductions in materials to refining work routines. Acting as a team, we will move forwards with more purpose and momentum.

On the international amateur golf front, 2008 was clearly the year of Adrian Morrow. 2009 turned out to be the year of the outsiders, proving all the bookmakers wrong! The German Senior Ladies team – very much the underdogs before the 2009 European Championship began - fought off favourite after favourite to ultimately carry off the coveted trophy. Our own reigning Lady Club Champion, Nicolle Eiche Huth was part of the ultimately victorious German Ladies Team – Herzlichen Glückwunsch (congratulations) Nicolle!

An Englishman would not be true to his roots if he didn’t talk about the weather at least once in every conversation, so I will not disappoint. To say this was the wettest winter in memory is not telling the whole story. In fact, we had a year’s rainfall in the 15 day period from 18th December. Never was the ”Course Closed” sign out for so many consecutive days. Whilst trying to keep members happy, we must also protect our course - a delicate balance indeed. The poor drainage in certain areas, which becomes more evident every year, will inevitably lead to more closures than in past years.

The only positive which came of this horrendous sequence of rainy days is that the greens were given a much needed rest. When the course eventually reopened it was heartening to see pitch mark free greens and the greening up of the fairways in late December after the over seeding in October. The dry months of October and November had caused a delay in the germination of the poa trivialis seed.

I would like to close by wishing you all a successful 2010 and Jeff Robinson a great start to his career in Spain.

Estimados socios. Finalizado el difícil año 2009, en donde hemos superado las expectativas en el número de acciones vendidas, nos

adentramos en un nuevo año clave que, según todos los expertos financieros, será muy difícil. Esperemos y confiemos pueda crear un punto de inflexión. Soy consciente, al igual que todos, de la necesidad de tener un control mucho más exhaustivo de nuestros gastos, sin que ello conlleve un perjuicio para los socios en lo que a servicios se refiere. Siguiendo un criterio democrático, basado en la encuesta realizada en nuestra página web e intentando dar sentido común al asunto, todos sabréis que se firmó un nuevo contrato con nuestro restaurador en unas mejores condiciones. Debemos sentirnos orgullosos de poder disfrutar de unas instalaciones de esta categoría y agradecer el servicio ofrecido. La tienda de golf está ofreciendo un buen servicio y calidad. De todos modos estoy en

constante comunicación con sus responsables para mejorar en todos los aspectos posibles. Como la mayoría sabéis hemos contratado un nuevo Director de Campo, en período de prueba durante 6 meses, para tomar el relevo de Douglas Anderson. Dada su experiencia y profesionalidad tenemos depositadas en él toda la confianza para poder ofrecer a todos los socios un campo de juego en las mejores condiciones posibles durante todo el año. Quisiera agradecer a Douglas Anderson su trabajo durante tantos años como responsable del mantenimiento de nuestro campo. Para finalizar, y a escasos dos meses de las elecciones a la Junta Directiva, solo desear suerte a todos los candidatos que se presenten para trabajar por el bien del club y el de sus socios. Dear members. Despite the fact that 2009 was a difficult year, we managed to have more golf shares sold than budgeted. 2010 is a

key year that, according to all the finance experts, will be a very difficult one. Let us hope and trust that this represents a starting point for change.

I am aware, as all our members are, that our expenses need to be controlled more exhaustively without being detrimental to the services offered by the Club.

Following a democratic criterion based on the survey carried out through our web site and trying to act in a common sense way, we signed a new contract with improved conditions with the Cafeteria. We should be proud of being able to enjoy first quality premises and be grateful for the service we receive.

The Golf Shop is offering both good service and quality. I am in constant contact with the people in charge to try and improve all the possible aspects related to the Shop.

As most of you know, a new Course Manager has been hired on a 6-month trial to replace Douglas Anderson. The new Course Manager has our complete trust, guaranteed by his vast experience and professionalism, to be able to offer our members a golf course in the best possible condition all the year round.

A word of thanks to Douglas Anderson for being in charge of the maintenance of our golf course during so many years.

Finally, as the election to the Executive Committee will take place in only two months, I would like to wish good luck to the candidates aiming to work in the best interest of all our members.

Mis queridos socios y compañeros: Reflexionando sobre los primeros seis meses como Capitán del Club, el decir

que éste periodo ha estado lleno de incidentes sería una atenuación absurda. Todo empezó bastante tranquilo ya que al poco tiempo después de mi nombramiento llegó el verano y muchos de nuestros socios se fueron de viaje. Sin embargo, al cabo del mes me inundaron las quejas relacionadas con el estado del campo, y especialmente sobre los greens, por parte de aquellos socios y sus invitados que sólo pueden disfrutar de Las Brisas en julio y agosto. Para agosto nuestros greens se asemejaban más a arrozales que a las superficies de juego de renombre internacional por los que se nos solía reconocer.

Tras el nombramiento de nuestro nuevo Director del Campo Jeff Robinson, junta con la Junta Directiva y el Comité de Greens, espero que todos presenciaremos una mejora palpable en el mantenimiento general del campo. Mejoras que, mis queridos amigos, no dejarán de ser más que cosméticos. Principalmente, debido a que las agujas del reloj han seguido su curso y Las Brisas se ha visto desbordado por muchos asuntos sobre los que no se han adoptado medidas, lo que mayormente temo es que parte de los daños causados a nuestro gran campo sean irreversibles. Como ya he

dicho en numerosas ocasiones en el pasado, somos muy afortunados al ser socios de una auténtica parte de la historia del golf y, nos guste o no, tenemos la obligación, mejor dicho “el deber”, de conservarla y mantenerla.

En una nota menos sombría, estoy muy emocionado con el nombramiento de Graeme Potter como Capitán adjunto y agradezco eternamente el magnífico apoyo que me ha brindado él y la Capitana de Señoras Kerrie Daniels.

Respecto del tema de las competiciones, me resultó muy grato el nivel de interés que produjo la competición de los sábados mediante el cual es posible acceder al Match-Play del Club en octubre. Sin embargo, después de las cuatro primeras semanas hubo menos interés y fue necesario cancelar tres sábados consecutivos debido a la falta de competidores. He pedido El Trofeo Walter Bonnici para el ganador final del Match-Play y agradecería profundamente vuestro apoyo para este encuentro.

Por último, quisiera agradecerles de nuevo el honor de haberme hecho su Capitán y por todo el apoyo sincero que me han brindado.

My Dear Fellow Members. As I reflect on the first six months as Club Captain, to call it eventful would be a silly understatement. It

started quietly enough as soon after my appointment many of our members departed for the summer, but after a month or so I was inundated with complaints about the condition of the course and particularly the greens by members and their guests who are only fortunate to benefit from Las Brisas in July and August. By August our greens bore closer resemblance to paddy fields than to the world class surface they were renowned for.

With the appointment of our new Head Green keeper Jeff Robinson, along with the Junta and Greens Committee, I hope we shall all see a marked improvement in the general maintenance of the course. But, my friends, these shall be cosmetic, mainly because the hands of time have caught up on many aspects of Las Brisas and without action to tackle these issues my fear is some of the damage caused to our great course may be irreversible. As I have said many times in the past,

we are fortunate to be members of a true piece of golfing history and like it or not we have a responsibility – no - a duty to upkeep and maintain it.

On a lighter note, I am thrilled with the appointment of Graeme Potter as my assistant Captain and I am eternally grateful to him and the Lady Captain Kerrie Daniels for their magnificent support.

On the matter of competitions I was very pleased in the initial interest shown in the Saturday competition qualifying for the Club Match-Play in October, but after the first four weeks interest waned and we have had to cancel three in a row due to lack of numbers. I have ordered the Walter Bonnici Trophy for the ultimate winner of the Match-Play and would deeply appreciate your support for this event.

In closing, I would like, again, to thank you for the honour of being your Captain and for all the heartfelt support I have had.

Queridas Socias, Es para mí un gran placer el poder mantenerles al corriente de los últimos acontecimientos golfísticos y novedades.

En septiembre la Sección de Señoras celebró su “Día del Invitado”, que fue bien acogido y los comentarios recibidos de los invitados fueron muy positivos. Mi marido y Bob Porter ofrecieron una copa de Buck’s Fizz a todas las señoras que salieron al campo. También se tomaron fotografías del encuentro y estas aparecerán en el álbum de fotografías para que todas puedan disfrutar de las mismas en la sala de las taquillas de las señoras. Las ganadoras fueron Jackie Porter y su invitada, Liz Fraser de La Quinta con 39pts.

En octubre se celebró el Día de la Capitana. Quisiera volver a agradecer a Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch su generosidad al haber patrocinado a los premios y a los obsequios en las mesas. Fue un día espléndido con un cielo despejado y un ambiente maravilloso tanto en el campo como fuera del mismo. La ganadora de la 1ª categoría fue Jackie Porter con 39 pts y ganadora de la 2ª categoría fue Anne Cecile Ramm Johansen con 36pts

La Cena Navideña de Señoras fue muy divertida. La jornada empezó con una competición de cinco clubes, e Inge Ellis ganó el día con 39 puntos. La

velada empezó con una copa de Cava obsequiada por el Capitán del Club, Gerry McGuiness (Gracias, Gerry) y continuó con la entrega de premios, los discursos y la cena, seguido por una representación de la mano de Alfie Palmer, en homenaje a Michael Buble, hasta bien entrada la medianoche. Todas las señoras bailaron hasta las tantas y luego algunos de sus maridos también se unieron a la fiesta.

Tenemos expectativas de que el año que viene, con Chantel Kerrabroucke y Kristina Bederoff al mando, llegaremos a triunfar en la Liga. También tenemos previsto la celebración de interclubes con La zagaleta, Aloha, San Roque y Sotogrande. Rogamos estudien el tablón de anuncios en el salón de taquillas de las señoras para las fechas de dichos encuentros. En primavera vamos a recibir los polos del equipo Interclub en color lila.

Quisiera desear a Lut, nuestra nueva Vicecapitana, muchísima suerte para el 2010.

Por último, también quisiera desearos a todas, ¡Feliz Año y lo mejor del golf!

Dear Members, It is with great pleasure that I can bring you all up to date with recent golfing events and news.

In September the Ladies Section hosted the Invitation Day. This was well supported and the feedback received from guests was very positive indeed. The fun began with my husband and Bob Porter offering a glass of bucks fizz to all the ladies on the course and photographs were taken at the same time. These will be in the photo album for all to see in the Ladies locker room. Jackie Porter and her guest, Liz Fraser from La Quinta won the day with 39pts.

In October I had my Lady Captain’s Day. I would like to thank again, Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch, for their generosity in sponsoring the prizes and table gifts. The day was beautiful with fine weather and a wonderful atmosphere both on and off the course. The winner in the 1st Category was Jackie Porter with 39 pts and in the 2nd Category Anne Cecile Ramm Johansen with 36pts.

The Ladies Christmas Dinner was great fun. The day started with a 5 club competition, and the winner in

the 1st Category was Nicolle Eicke-Huth with 33 pts and in the 2nd Category was Inge Ellis with 38 pts. The evening started with a glass of Cava provided by the Club Captain, Gerry McGuiness, thank you Gerry. The evening then continued with the prize giving, speeches and dinner. We were then entertained up to midnight by Alfie Palmer, a Michael Bublé tribute act. All the ladies danced the night away and then some of the husbands joined in the fun.

Next year we hope to do well in the Liga with Chantal Kerrabroucke and Kristina Bederoff at the helm. We also have interclubs planned with; La zagaletta, Aloha, San Roque and Sotogrande. Please look at the notice board in the Ladies locker room for the dates. We are going to receive new lilac coloured Interclub shirts in the Spring.

I would like to wish Lut, our new Vice-Captain, the very best of luck for 2010.

Finally, I would like to wish you all Happy New Year and good Golfing! Our Invitation Day has been moved to May 21st

La formalización de un contrato nuevo con Antonio ha dado paso a una relación amistosa entre los miembros del Comité Social y los representantes

del restaurante (Alexis Postigo y Paco García) dando lugar a unas cenas, almuerzos y cócteles agradables, incluyendo el Golf, Cena y Baile de Halloween que fue un gran éxito con 96 concursantes y 110 comensales. Los recientemente adquiridos adornos festivos completaron el ambiente, con un menú atractivo amenizado por la música de Beaky al agrado de todos.

Se ha entregado la cantidad de 2.075,00 € a Cudeca, recaudado por las “Damas de los martes y los miércoles”, “la Organización benéfica del día de la Capitana de Señoras” y “La Copa Carol Carter”. El fotógrafo de nuestro Club, Martin Gutierez, ha tenido la generosidad de donar un retrato fotográfico como premio anual para La Copa Carol Carter. A la ganadora se le presentará la Copa, donada por Ralph el esposo de Carol, y podrá escoger tanto la persona a fotografiar como el escenario para el retrato.

Desafortunadamente, no nos ha acompañado el tiempo durante las Navidades y el periodo de Año Nuevo, con la correspondiente cancelación de muchas competiciones debido a las lluvias torrenciales, incluyendo el cada vez más concurrido evento del Desayuno, Golf y Almuerzo de Ano Nuevo. Sin embargo, aquellos que se atrevieron a luchar contra los elementos acogieron con entusiasmo y disfrutaron mucho de las festividades de Noche Vieja.

The new contract with Antonio has brought with it an amiable relationship between the members of the Social Committee and the

restaurant’s representatives, Alexis Postigo and Paco Garcia resulting in pleasing dinners, lunches and cocktails including the Halloween Golf & Dinner Dance which was a great success with 96 competitors and 110 diners. The newly acquired festive decorations set the scene, with an agreeable menu and music by Beaky to add to every ones enjoyment.

2075€ have been presented to Cudeca raised by the Tuesday and Wednesday Ladies, The Lady Captain’s Day Charity and The Carol Carter Cup. Our Club photographer, Martin Gutierrez has very generously made an annual prize donation of a portrait photograph for the Carol Carter Cup Competition. The winner has the choice of both subject and setting for the portrait as well as being presented with the cup which was donated by Carol’s husband Ralph.

Unfortunately the weather has been a problem over the Christmas and New Year period with many competitions being cancelled due to torrential rain including the ever popular Ano Nuevo Breakfast, Golf and Lunch event, however once again the New Year’s Eve celebrations were well supported and enjoyed by those that braved the weather.

Robert Karlsson (suecia)Robert, hijo de un Greenkeeper, proviene de Katrineholm, Suecia, aunque en la actualidad reside en Mónaco. Comenzó el 2010 con buen pie al ganar el Commercialbank Masters de Qatar patrocinado por Dolphin Energy – la manera ideal de olvidar un 2009 colmado de frustración y protagonizado por un problema ocular debilitante.

Martín Kaymer (Alemania)Una excelente primera temporada en el 2007 marcó el inicio de una carrera de éxitos aún mayores entre el 2008 y el 2010. Su campaña en el 2009 en la Carrera a Dubai sufrió una frenada en seco cuando se rompió cuatro huesos del pie en una carrera de karts, lo que le obligó a abandonar la acción durante dos meses y le supuso descender hasta el tercer puesto en los ranking. Una segunda victoria en tres años en el torneo de Abu Dhabi del 2010 le catapultó al puesto número seis en la clasificación mundial, el mejor número de su carrera profesional.

Charl schwartzel (sudáfrica)Charl, un hombre que cuenta con la licencia de piloto privado, sin duda nos ha demostrado que es capaz de volar muy alto, como lo hizo a principios del 2010, tras ganar los dos primeros acontecimientos golfistas del año, el Africa Open y el Joburg Open. Perpetúa una impecable tradición familiar de golfistas: su padre, George, era un aficionado que demostró tener un gran talento, antes de convertirse en jugador profesional, y su hermano, Adrian, a veces ‘caddie’ de su hermano mayor, también se está forjando su propio nombre en el circuito sudafricano.

Álvaro Quirós (España)Con una altura de 1,92 metros, sin duda álvaro es un jugador con licencia para estremecer. Fan de películas de James Bond, el “longhitter” se llevó su tercer título del Tour Europeo al ganar el Commercialbank Masters de Qatar patrocinado por Dolphin Energy en el año 2009. álvaro alcanzó la victoria en la competición más disputada que se haya dado lugar en un campeonato de la categoría del Tour Europeo, subrayándose así el enorme talento de este héroe de capa y espada, garantizándose así su puesto entre los mejores 30 jugadores del Ranking mundial.

Pablo Martín (España)Entró en los anales de la historia del Tour Europeo al convertirse en el primer aficionado en ganar una competición del Tour Europeo cuando se adueñó del Open de Estoril de Portugal en el 2007 en Quinta da Marinha en Octavos Golfe. Se convirtió en jugador profesional unos meses más tarde pero la transición le fue difícil, manteniendo el tipo a duras penas durante casi dos años antes de recuperar fuerzas y adjudicarse un segundo título del Tour Europeo en el Alfred Dunhill Championship en Sudáfrica, el primer acontecimiento golfista de la Carrera a Dubai del 2010.

Rory Mcilroy (Irlanda del Norte)Desde el momento en el que registró un drive de 36,5 metros a la edad de 2 años, estaba claro que en Irlanda del Norte se había descubierto otra piedra preciosa poco común del mundo del golf. Rory no pudo convertirse en el ganador más joven del trofeo Harry Vardon desde que Seve Ballesteros se hiciera con el título en 1976 ya que quedó segundo por detrás de Lee Westwood en la edición inaugural de la Carrera a Dubai, cuando había liderado su pase de acceso a la competición final de la temporada 2009. Su premio de consolación fue tan sólo convertirse en el segundo veinteañero en hacer brecha entre los diez más grandes del mundo del golf, tras Sergio García.

Ian Poulter (Inglaterra)Ian ha demostrado una tremenda consistencia a lo largo de la temporada 2009, que culminó con la victoria en el Open de Singapur patrocinado por Barclays, en la búsqueda de su octavo título del Tour Europeo, de camino a acabar noveno en la Carrera a Dubai. He continues a fine family tradition of golfers as his father, George, was a useful amateur before turning professional and his brother, Adrian, who caddies for his older sibling on occasions, is also making a name for himself on the South African circuit.

Martin Kaymer (Germany)A superb debut season in 2007 proved to be the forerunner to even greater achievements between 2008 and 2010. His 2009 Race to Dubai campaign halted when he broke four bones in his foot whilst go-karting and was forced out of action for two months, an injury which resulted in him finishing third in the Rankings. A second win in three years at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship propelled him to a career-high sixth in the world.

Alvaro Quiros (spain)Standing at six feet three inches tall, Alvaro is a player clearly licensed to thrill. The big-hitting fan of James Bond films claimed his third European Tour title when he won the 2009 Commercialbank Qatar Masters presented by Dolphin Energy. The fact his victory came against the strongest field ever assembled at a regular European Tour event underlined the enormous talent of this swashbuckling Spaniard and elevated him into the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking.

sergio Garcia (spain)Created European Tour history by winning the first tournament staged in The Race to Dubai at the 2009 HSBC Champions. Defeated Ryder Cup team-mate Oliver Wilson in a sudden-death play-off at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, and, as a result, climbed to a career-high of Number Two on the Official World Golf Ranking. Came agonisingly close to his first Major victory at the US PGA Championship only to be denied by Padraig Harrington, the man who edged him out of The 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie after a dramatic play-off.

Lee Westwood (England)Crowned European Number One after winning the inaugural Race to Dubai with a breath-taking victory in the Dubai World Championship. A brilliant final round course record 64 over the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates capped a magnificent season and lifted him to a career-equalling high of fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking. Victory earned him the €830,675 and a further €996,810 for topping The Race to Dubai Bonus Pool, taking his season’s earnings to a record €4,237,762.

Rory Mcilroy (Northern Ireland)From the moment he recorded a 40 yard drive at the age of two, it was clear that Northern Ireland had unearthed another rare golfing gem. Rory just missed out on becoming the youngest player to win the Harry Vardon Trophy since Seve Ballesteros in 1976 when he finished second behind Lee Westwood in the inaugural Race to Dubai, having led going into the final event of the 2009 season. His consolation was to become only the second 20 year old to break into the World’s top ten, after Sergio Garcia.

¿Qué tal te encuentras aquí?Me siento afortunado y privilegiado. Es un fantástico desafío y una gran oportunidad formar parte de la vida de Las Brisas en esta nueva etapa.

¿Qué opinas del diseño del campo?Creo honestamente que no tengo mucho que ver en este tema. Para esto ya existen expertos. Me encantó encontrarme recientemente con Kyle Phillis, quien está realizando un plan maestro para el campo. Estoy impaciente por ver sus propuestas. He visto algunos de sus trabajos y ciertamente son muy especiales.

¿Qué puedes hacer por nuestros greenes?Hace tres semanas puse en marcha un programa semanal de aireado y pinchado de greenes, pero esto es solo una gota en el océano. Tengo prevista una gran cantidad de medidas correctivas a nivel directivo. Voy a instigar un programa agresivo de aplicación de arena en la superficie del césped, pinchado, ahuecado y escarificado; así como resembrado de las zonas de putting. Esto causará molestias al juego, pero no hay otra opción si queremos mejorar las superficies de juego y alcanzar unos niveles aceptables a medio plazo en un futuro inmediato. Puede ocurrir que a medio plazo las superficies empeoren ligeramente (a nivel de juego) para luego mejorar. En resumen, las conclusiones del informe de STRI coinciden con mi valoración personal sobre la situación de los greenes. Pero ya veremos cómo responden

Esto me lleva a mi segunda pregunta: ¿Cómo ves la colaboración con sTRI Bingley?Agradezco mucho su participación. Espero que colaboremos de forma eficaz. Ambos tenemos algo que ofrecer a Las Brisas. Me alegra especialmente contar con su apoyo y análisis siempre que lo necesite. Nuestras filosofías son concordantes.

¿Cuáles son tus primeras impresiones sobre el personal de mantenimiento del campo?Es pronto todavía, pero mi primera impresión es que es un grupo formado por personas serviciales y amigables. Claramente son trabajadores leales al club y me recibieron con una sonrisa el día de mi presentación. ¡Esto es algo positivo!

¿Cómo va tu español? Estoy aprendiendo algunas palabras cada día. Pronto recibiré clases de español en un grupo reducido, una hora o dos al día. No creo que tarde mucho en aprender lo básico para hacerme entender. Anteriormente pasé algunos años en el extranjero y considero mi obligación hacer un esfuerzo por aprender el idioma del país. Tengo suerte, pues mi número dos, Jesús Blanco, habla bien inglés.

¿Cómo ves el nivel de control de tráfico en el campo?En principio, consideraré la ampliación de los puntos de acceso a las calles. Adicionalmente, utilizaremos las estacas que acaban de llegar para acordonar ciertas áreas y dar descanso a otras zonas durante el invierno.

Tienes experiencia de primera mano en césped de climas cálidos. ¿Dónde y cuándo la adquiriste?Entre 1984-87 fui Superintendente del CC Johannesburg en Sudáfrica. Luego pasé siete años en la consultoría y construcción de campos de golf. Entre mis clientes estaba el Open de Sudáfrica y las sedes del Sunshine Tour Houghton GC, Humewood GC, Port Elizabeth y zwartkop CC en Pretoria. Trabajé en estrecha colaboración con Matkovich y Hayes (arquitectos de campos de golf) y estuve involucrado en numerosos proyectos de nueva construcción.

The following interview took place with Ian Martin three weeks after Jeff’s arrival.

How does it feel to be here?I feel very fortunate and privileged. I see this as being a fantastic challenge and a great opportunity to play a part in the next phase of the life of RCG Las Brisas.

What do you think of the design of the course?In honesty, I do not get too involved in that kind of thing. For that there are experts. I was thrilled to meet Kyle Phillips recently, who is putting together a Masterplan for the course. I cannot wait to see his proposals. I have seen some examples of his work and they are really quite special.

What can you do with our greens?Already, we have initiated a weekly programme of green solid tine aeration three weeks ago, but this is a drop in the ocean. I plan a great deal of corrective management. I will be instigating an aggressive programme of topdressing, hollow coring and scarification; as well as overseeding of the putting surfaces. This will be disruptive to play, but there is simply no alternative to this in order to improve playing surfaces to an acceptable standard for the interim foreseeable future. It could well be that in the short term the surfaces get slightly worse (in terms of playability) in order to get better. In summary the findings of the STRI report concur with my own personal assessment of the greens situation, but let’s see how they respond.

This brings me to the second question: How do you view the collaboration with sTRI Bingley?I really welcome their involvement. I expect we will work together very well. We both have something to offer Las Brisas. I am particularly pleased to have their analysis and support facilities at my disposal, if and when we need them. Our philosophies are consistant.

What are your first impressions of the greens staff?It is early days, but my first impressions are that they are a very willing and amiable group of men. Clearly loyal to the club, and to a man they greeted me with smiling faces upon introduction. That can’t be a bad thing!

How is your spanish coming along?I am picking up some vocabulary every day. In addition I will soon be joining a small Spanish class, which will meet an hour or two per day. I do not think it will take me long to pick up enough to make myself understood. I have previously lived several years abroad and consider it an obligation to make the effort to learn the local language. I am also very fortunate in that my number two Jesus Blanco speaks very good English.

How do you view the level of traffic control on the course?Initially, I will be thinking in terms of widening the current fairway access points. In addition we will be using the newly arrived stakes to rope off certain areas to provide relief to other areas through the winter.

you have had first hand experience in warm weather grasses. Where was that and when?From 1984 – 87 I was Superintendant at CC Johannesburg in South Africa. After that I spent 7 years consulting to and constructing golf courses. Clients included South African Open and Sunshine Tour venues Houghton GC, Humewood GC, Port Elizabeth and zwartkop CC in Pretoria. I worked very closely with Matkovich and Hayes (golf course architects) and was involved with numerous new construction projects.

Are you a “hands on” superintendant?You could say that. I favour a balanced approach. It will not be an uncommon sight to see me “getting my hands dirty”. It is an essential part of building trust and confidence with the team, that they see me “walk the walk”, not just talk the talk!

Queridos socios: El Comité de Campo les desea Feliz Año Nuevo para el 2010. El 2009 no ha sido un año bueno para

el campo. Al igual que ahora, las condiciones meteorológicas extremas pusieron de relieve a los problemas subyacentes del campo, y los greens y las calles volvieron a sufrir debido a un drenaje inadecuado y un sistema de riego defectuoso.

Aquellos que jugaron el campo durante el verano, al igual que los que experimentaron el campo durante diciembre del 2009 y enero del 2010, así lo atestiguarán.

Desde el 2008, varios informes han confirmado los problemas que tiene el campo, ampliamente documentado recientemente en el Informe STRI/Bingley. ¡Fíjense en las fotografías!

Todos sabemos lo que hizo al RCG Las Brisas famoso: Unos greens y unas calles perfectas, y un trazado hermoso en un entorno similar al de un parque botánico. Tenemos una visión: La de devolver al campo a su gloria de antaño. El Informe STRI/Bingley ha confirmado nuestros temores con respecto al estado general del campo. Si todavía no lo han leído, les animamos a que lo hagan. La buena noticia es que el Informe también nos señala el camino a seguir para conseguir nuestro objetivo.

La contratación de un nuevo Director de Campo Jeff Robinson es un paso importante en la dirección acertada. Como persona altamente cualificada y con una amplia experiencia en climas calurosos y fríos, confiamos en que el campo recibirá la atención que merece, mejorándolo en todos los sentidos. No obstante, aunque se mejoren varios aspectos de apariencia y capacidad para el juego del campo, habrá límites respecto de los resultados que podemos esperar.

Entendemos la importancia para muchos de los socios de que nos aseguremos de proteger a los valores Trent Jones en nuestro campo. Cuando estudiábamos a cuál de los arquitectos de golf deberíamos de pedir asesoramiento, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer al arquitecto de golf de renombre, Kyle Phillips, que visitó a nuestro campo en noviembre de 2009 durante una de sus visitas para Valderrama. Los antecedentes Trent Jones de Kyle son inigualables: Durante 16 años fue Vicepresidente de la Trent Jones II Design Company, antes de establecerse como asesor independiente. Se han descrito sus diseños más recientes como nada menos que obras maestras, atrayendo los elogios y la admiración de la prensa golfista mundial. Su filosofía es completamente coherente con la de Trent Jones, y con Kyle Phillips al mando, ningún socio tendrá que temer por el que se ponga en peligro el principio de

diseño original durante la ejecución de las obras. Actualmente estamos en vías de formalizar un contrato con el mismo que incluya un Plan Maestro en el que se facilitarán sugerencias para mejoras.

Confiamos en que Robert Trent Jones hubiera estado de acuerdo con lo anterior. Preguntado cuál de los campos que había terminado era su favorito, éste contestó que –nunca se termina un campo. Posteriormente, explicó que se actualizan, se reforman y se mejoran los campos de golf constantemente para impedir su inevitable degradación en términos de calidad

Se solicitarán ofertas concretas en cuanto el Plan Maestro de Kyle Philips se haya redactado. Sin embargo, con la inclusión en nuestros planes de Kyle Phillips en noviembre de 2009 vamos a necesitar más tiempo del que se había previsto en un principio. Por lo tanto, no vamos a poder presentarles un proyecto completo en la JGO del 2010. En vez de ello, hemos recomendado a la JD que se aplace la propuesta prevista para el proyecto de reconstrucción de los greens hasta una fecha posterior.

Seguiremos nuestro proceso de búsqueda de información, disponiendo del tiempo necesario para poder redactar una descripción completa del proyecto y cuando se haya terminado la misma recomendaremos a la JD que la presente a los socios para su aprobación.

Creemos que el tiempo invertido en una planificación minuciosa y en una negociación acertada de contratos garantizará que nuestro proyecto se gestione de la manera más económica y práctica, dentro de lo presupuestado y dentro del marco cronológico que se decida, con el mínimo de interrupciones posible para el juego.

Una financiación sólida para el proyecto siempre fue una prioridad. A muchos de nuestros socios, que se preocupan por la situación económica global y la del RCG Las Brisas en particular, quisiéramos decirles que compartimos sus inquietudes. Sin embargo, estamos convencidos de que si el Club desea avanzar, tenemos que ser capaces de compaginar la inversión con el ahorro. Confiamos en que si estudian la información disponible, no tardarán en compartir nuestra misma urgencia.

Después de las obras, tendremos un campo magnífico del que todos podremos disfrutar y enorgullecernos. Habremos conseguido volver a posicionar al RCG Las Brisas entre los campos de mayor calidad en la Costa, volviendo a hacerles la competencia una vez más. Habremos hecho realidad nuestra visión y en vez de un pasado glorioso le habremos dado al RCG Las Brisas un futuro prometedor…

Dear members. The Greens Committee wishes you a happy New Year 2010. The year 2009 was not a good year for the golf course. Just

like now, extreme weather conditions highlighted the underlying problems of the course and once again greens and fairways suffered due to our inadequate drainage and faulty irrigation system.

Those of you who played the course in the summer will testify to this, just like those members who experienced the course during December 2009 & January 2010. Since 2008, various reports have testified to the problems of the course. Most recently this was documented by STRI/Bingley. Just have a look at the photos from the report!

We all know what made RCG Las Brisas famous: perfect greens and fairways, and a lovely lay-out in a park like environment. We have a vision of restoring the course to its former glory. The STRI/Bingley report has confirmed our fears with regard to the general state of the course. If you have not yet read it, we urge you to do so. The good news is that the report also charted a path to follow in order to achieve our goal.

The employment of new course manager Jeff Robinson is an important step in the right direction. Highly qualified and with a wealth of experience in hot and cold climates we are confident that the course will receive the attention it deserves, improving it to every extent possible. However, although various aspects of the course’s appearance and playability may be improved there will be limits to the results we can expect.

We are aware of how important it is for many members to make sure that the Trent Jones values of the course are protected. While studying which golf architect to turn to, we had the opportunity to meet with world famous golf course architect Kyle Phillips, who visited the course in November 2009 whilst working at Valderrama. Kyle Phillips’ Trent Jones background is second to none: For 16 years he was Vice President of the Trent Jones II Design Company before branching out on his own. His recent designs have been described as nothing less than masterpieces, drawing acclaim and admiration from the golfing press around the world. His philosophy is completely consistent with that of Trent Jones and no member need fear that the concept of the original design will be compromised

We believe that time invested in detailed planning and well negotiated contracts will guarantee that our project is managed in the most economical and practical way, at the budgeted costs and within the decided time frame, with as little interruption of play as possible.

Sound financing of the project was always a priority. To the many members worrying about the financial situation in the world in general and of RCG Las Brisas in particular, we would like to say that we share their concern. However, we are convinced that if the Club wishes to go forward, investment must go hand in hand with savings. We trust that if you study the information available, you will soon share the urgency we feel.

After the works we will have a magnificent course for all of us to enjoy and be proud of. We will have put RCG Las Brisas back amongst the top quality courses on the Coast, enabling us once again to compete with them. We will have implemented our vision and provided RCG Las Brisas with a bright future as opposed to a glorious past…..

in any way in working with Kyle Phillips. We are currently finalizing a contract with him including a master plan which will provide course enhancements.

We are sure Robert Trent Jones would have agreed to this. When he was asked “which of the courses he has completed was his favorite”, he replied “a golf course is never finished”. He later went on to explain that golf courses are constantly being upgraded, restored and improved upon in order to keep the course from going backwards in terms of quality.

Specific tenders will be obtained as soon as a master plan from Kyle Philips is in place. However, with Kyle Phillips entering our plans only in November 2009 we will need more time than previously anticipated. Therefore, we will not be able to present you with a complete project at the 2010 AGM. Instead, we have recommended the EC to defer the planned proposal of the greens re-construction project to a later date.

We will now continue our fact finding process, taking the necessary time to finalize a complete project description. As soon as this is ready we will recommend the EC to present the project for your approval.

El problema más común que observo entre los aficionados es la incorrecta alineación de hombros. Para hacer un swing en el plano y golpear la bola en línea recta, sus hombros deben estar alineados con el objetivo. Cuando sus hombros están abiertos (apuntando a la izquierda del objetivo, si es diestro) tenderá a realizar un slice (la bola se desvía hacia la derecha). Las personas que hacen slice se sitúan cada vez más hacia la izquierda, forzando un swing exagerado y provocando un slice exagerado. Cuando los hombros están cerrados (apuntando hacia la derecha del objetivo, si se es diestro) provocará

un hook (la bola se desviará hacia la derecha). Las personas que hacen hooks fuerzan la dirección cada vez más hacia la derecha realizando un plano de swing del revés y provocando hooks y blocks (cuando el jugador golpea la bola tarde en el swing).

El swing es a menudo un juego de opuestos – aunque intente corregir el problema, ¡sólo lo está empeorando! – Cuando se sitúe, pida a su compañero de partida que compruebe la posición de sus hombros desde atrás, se asegure que sus hombros están alineados con el objetivo y observe la trayectoria de su bola hasta la bandera el día entero.

The most common set up problem I see among amateurs is their shoulder alignment. To swing on plane and hit the ball straight, your shoulders must be aligned to the target. When your shoulders are open (pointing left of the target if you are right handed), you will tend to slice the ball. People who slice aim further and further left which simply promotes an over-the-top swing path resulting in an exaggerated slice. When the shoulders are closed (pointing right of the target, assuming you are right handed) you will hook the ball. People who hook the golf ball aim further and further right promoting an inside-out swing plane resulting in hooks and blocks.

The golf swing is sometimes a game of opposites - even though you are trying to correct the problem, you are making it worse! During set-up, get your playing partner to check your shoulders from behind. Have your partner make sure your shoulders are aligned to the target and watch your ball fly all day at the pin.

Cada empleado tiene derecho a 14 días festivos por año, aparte de los 30 días naturales de vacaciones anuales. En el reino unido hay sólo 8 festivos, en Irlanda son 10.

Visto lo anterior y teniendo en cuenta el número de empleados implicados en las reparaciones del sistema de riego, de un total de 19 empleados más Douglas, el número de personas que trabajan en un día cualquiera puede oscilar entre 12 y 16.

De vez en cuando es necesario reemplazar a algún miembro del personal de forma temporal. Si ve alguna cara nueva en el Club, tenga la seguridad que se trata de una sustitución. Por ejemplo, José en el Cuarto de Palos sustituye a Amparo, quien acaba de dar a luz a gemelos. Desde enero de 2008 no se ha contratado a nadie más y se ha reducido la plantilla en 4 empleados:

Oficina de Administración: Manolo Muñoz (ex Jefe de Contabilidad) Se ha jubilado anticipadamente a la edad de 61. Lo reemplaza Isabel Delgado, pero solo hasta que Manolo cumpla 65 años, lo cual ocurrirá en agosto de 2012; hasta ese momento Manolo trabaja un 15% e Isabel un 85%. Manolo emplea su 15% sustituyendo a los trabajadores que toman vacaciones y esta situación finalizará en 2012, al igual que el contrato de Isabel.

Paco Moreno (Asistente de Greenkeeper) se jubiló anticipadamente a la edad de 64 años en 2008. Fue reemplazado por otro trabajador durante un año (hasta que Paco cumplió 65 años) y dicho trabajador ya ha sido despedido, reduciendo la plantilla en un trabajador.

Desde el 1.1.09, el Director del Club asumió las funciones de Secretario del RCG Las Brisas, ahorrando anualmente al Club 25.000€. Este cargo era desempeñado anteriormente por Idoia Torres, abogada del Club.

Los empleados de mantenimiento del campo que trabajan los fines de semana tienen derecho a un día libre por cada cuatro horas trabajadas.

Baja por paternidad: 15 días

Por cambio de vivienda: 2 días

Vacaciones anuales de cada empleado: 30 días

El despido injustificado da derecho a 45 días de indemnización por cada año trabajado.

Por matrimonio: 20 días

Por hospitalización de familiares cercanos: 2 días (3 días fuera de la provincia de Málaga)

Por fallecimiento de un familiar cercano: 3 días (5 días fuera de la provincia de Málaga)

Durante la “Feria de San Pedro” los trabajadores del campo terminan su jornada a las 12:00 cada día de esa semana. Esto se acordó de forma contractual hace algunos años.

Nuestro campo es mantenido “de lado a lado”. Es decir, se trabaja el 100% de su superficie. Las zonas “rough” de la mayor parte de los campos del norte de Europa constituyen un 50% del total del campo – estas zonas NUNCA se mantienen, se dejan simplemente en su estado natural.

La maquinaria del campo de golf de Las Brisas tiene un periodo de inactividad cero, se usa continuamente y necesita un mantenimiento costoso. En UK y países del norte de Europa la maquinaria del campo no se utiliza durante 5 – 7 meses cada año, permitiendo un programa de mantenimiento de maquinaria mucho más riguroso.

Los 556 olivos de Las Brisas necesitan al menos una poda anual.

Las aproximadamente 400 palmeras necesitan limpieza al menos 1 – 2 veces al año.

El tratamiento de parasitos de plantas e insectos consume una gran cantidad de horas de trabajo, en contra de lo que sucede en los campos del norte de Europa

Nuestro campo se riega “de lado a lado”, contamos con 1.650 aspersores que requieren un mantenimiento constante. En los campos de UK existe una media de 800.

Las Brisas es un campo de césped Bermuda. Los Bunkers en los campos con Bermuda requieren un 300% más de mantenimiento que en otros campos con una variedad de césped distinta.

Nuestro campo crece durante todo el año. Los campos del norte de Europa tienen un periodo de crecimiento de entre 4 – 7 meses. Fuera de la época de crecimiento, no es necesario cortar el césped ni tratar con herbicidas.

Considerando solo estos tres puntos, la cantidad de mano de obra necesaria para este tipo de campo en esta región climática es aproximadamente un 200 - 300% superior a su equivalente en UK y norte de Europa. Ahora es más fácil comprender por qué necesitamos 18 personas para mantener nuestro campo, en comparación con las 6 – 8 personas que se necesitan en campos de otros países. Se podría comparar de forma justa con los campos de golf de Florida, Arizona o del sur de California. En el clima cálido de USA la cifra media es de un empleado por hoyo además del mecánico y el Superintendente del Campo.

Each employee has the right to 14 bank holidays per year, apart from the 30 days official annual holidays. This compares with 8 bank holidays in the UK and 10 in Ireland.

Knowing all this, and aware of the number of staff tied up with repairs to the irrigation system, from a total of 19 golf course workers plus Douglas, the number of men actually working on a given day would vary between 12 and 16.

It is periodically necessary to replace key workers on a temporary basis. If you see a new face about the Club, be assured it is a substitute worker. For example Jose in the club store is substituting Amparo who has just had twins. Since January 2008, no additions and 4 staff reductions have been made:

The local “Feria de San Pedro” means that all course workers finish work at 12:00 every day that week. This was contractually agreed several years ago.

Our course is maintained “wall to wall”. That is to say 100% of the area is manicured. The rough areas on most golf courses in the North of Europe constitute up to 50% of the total acreage of the course – these areas are NEVER maintained, they are just left to nature.

The golf course machinery in Brisas has zero downtime. It is constantly in use and requires costly, on going maintenance. In the UK and North of Europe course machinery is allowed between 5 – 7 months rest each year. This allows a more thorough machinery maintenance programme.

The 556 olive trees on Brisas require pruning at least once per year.

The over 400 palm trees require cleaning 1 – 2 times per year.

The treatment for bugs and insects consumes a substantial amount of man/hours and resources, as opposed to most courses in Northern Europe.

Our course has “wall to wall” irrigation, i.e. 1.650 sprinkler heads requiring very frequent maintenance. This compares with an average of 800 on UK courses.

Las Brisas is a Bermuda grass course. Bunkers on Bermudas grass courses require 300% more maintenance than courses with other types of grasses.

Our course has year round growth. This compares with courses in Northern Europe where the growth period ranges from 4 – 7 months. Outside of the growth period, regular grass cutting and herbicide treatments are not required.

Taking only these first three points into consideration, the amount of man hours required for this type of course in this climatic region are approximately 200 - 300% higher than an equivalent course in the UK and Northern Europe. One can now begin to understand why it takes a staff of around 18 to keep our course in shape, compared to maybe 6 – 8 in your country. A fair comparison would be with courses in Florida, Arizona or Southern California. The US warm weather states standard workers to course ratio is one worker per hole, plus mechanic and plus Superintendant.
