I look forward to 2009 as a year of financial and social consolidation, a year of stability with no more building works and a year where the Club will once again elect a new President. It caused me - and all who had the privilege to know him - great personal sadness to witness the gradual demise of our dear late President Walter Bonnici, whom I was honoured to know and serve under. He is greatly missed. I am sure Walter´s successor will share his unselfish passion for the well being of his beloved Las Brisas.

I am confident that the flow of information from the Junta to the members will continue to improve. For this I would like to thank Marilyn Cook in particular, the Junta’s Communications Officer, whose input has been of extreme help to me. Our No. 1 tool in the communication process to the members is undoubtedly the new website www.realclubdegolflasbrisas.com. Its main advantages over the old one are that it has a password protected members only area and it allows members to book tee times from the comfort of their own PC or PDA. The new site also allows me a far higher degree of back office accessibility to update and vary text and photos. This was not possible with the old site without incurring substantial costs each time.

Our members should know that despite a number of staff reductions in 2008, the Executive Committee has given assurances to our employees that there will be no further reductions in 2009. This serves as a necessary and most deserved vote of confidence to all our staff, who are understandably nervous in these uncertain times.

The dormant nature of the bermuda grass on our fairways, resulting in the current discolouration, is a direct consequence of a conscious decision not to overseed this winter. Top agronomists agree that a respite from overseeding every 5 - 6 years is a necessary measure to ensure more effective growth in the long term. GC Valderrama does not overseed. This fact alone underlines the conclusion that the overriding motives are of an agronomic, not economic, nature.

What has become evident is the degree of weed content in the fairways, and as an immediate response an eradication programme has already begun. The Greens Committee has also reacted positively by giving absolute priority to put together an action plan for a comprehensive drainage improvement, in particular for the worst areas on the front nine. I am proud of the publications we have produced in the past year, both for their excellent design quality and the fact that they represent big savings. The eNewsletters now replace the old magazines, resulting in an annual saving of over 16.000€. The new course guide and pin placement card technology, which would normally cost in excess of 15.000€ not only came in at zero cost to the Club, but by the time the first order is sold out will actually generate a profit of 20.000€. The Club retains these profits, not Golf’us. The new glossy 2009 tournament calendar replaces the old fixture card. All printing costs for this vastly superior item were covered by the sponsor, Jyske Bank. Finally the Club was paid 19.000€ by our scorecard sponsor, Reale Insurance,

in return for a 2 year agreement. It is clear that the accumulated savings / revenues in this area have been substantial without compromising on quality or service. I am pleased to say that I have received many new photographs from Gerry McGuinness, Karl Dammertz, Martin Gutierrez, Michael Denker and Brenda Holland. My sincere thanks to them.

Historically, downward trends in Golf Club share prices have been caused by external economic conditions and have not been a result of internal Club policies. The brand Real Club de Golf Las Brisas is precious both to its shareholders and to its Executive Committee. Together we will continue to strive to uphold traditions and sustain the attractiveness of being a part of arguably the most sought after members Club on the coast.

Finally, on the golfing front, now the 2009 tournament calendar has started handicaps will soon come tumbling down and people will then concentrate on the most important issue of all - their golf game and the enjoyment thereof. Happy New Year!

hacia todo nuestro personal que está comprensiblemente inquieto ante estos tiempos tan inciertos.El carácter aletargado de la Bermuda en nuestras calles, que tiene como resultado su actual decoloración, es consecuencia directa de una decisión deliberada de no realizar resiembra este invierno. Ingenieros agrónomos de primer nivel están de acuerdo en que un descanso en la resiembra cada 5 ó 6 años es una medida necesaria para asegurar un crecimiento más eficiente a largo plazo. El Club de Golf Valderrama no realiza resiembra. Esto por sí sólo, subraya el hecho de que los motivos fundamentales son de naturaleza técnica y no económica.

Por no haber resembrado las calles, es por lo que se ve tal cantidad de malas hierbas. Por ese motivo se ha iniciado de forma inmediata un programa de eliminación de las mismas. La reacción del Comité de Campo también ha sido positiva, dando prioridad absoluta a un completo plan de acción de mejora del drenaje, principalmente para las áreas más afectadas de los nueve primeros hoyos para este invierno.

Me siento orgulloso de las publicaciones que hemos realizado en este último año, tanto por la excelente calidad de su diseño como por el hecho de que han supuesto un gran ahorro. La circular electrónica sustituye a las antiguas circulares impresas, lo cual supone un ahorro anual que supera los 16.000 €. La nueva guía del campo y la tecnología para la colocación de banderas, que normalmente costaría más de 15.000 € no sólo supuso un coste cero para el Club, sino que para cuando se venda el primer pedido

Espero que el 2009 se presente como un año de consolidación económica y social, un año de estabilidad, sin más obras, en definitiva, un año durante el cual el club elegirá una vez más a un nuevo Presidente. Tanto para mí como para todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerle, la pérdida de nuestro querido Presidente Walter Bonnici fue muy sentida. Considero un honor el haber estado a su disposición. Se le echa mucho en falta. Estoy seguro de que el sucesor de Walter compartirá su pasión desinteresada por el bienestar de su querido Las Brisas.

Confío en que continúe mejorando el flujo de información de la Junta a los miembros. Quiero agradecer a Marilyn Cook en concreto, como parte del equipo de comunicación de la Junta, su colaboración que me ha sido de infinita ayuda. Nuestra herramienta principal en el proceso de comunicación con los miembros es sin duda el nueva sitio web www.realclubdegolflasbrisas.com. Su principal ventaja frente al antiguo es contar con una zona de acceso sólo para socios protegida por una clave y que permite a los socios reservar horas de salida desde la comodidad de su propio ordenador o PDA. El nuevo sitio también me permite un nivel de acceso mayor a la hora de actualizar y modificar el texto y las fotografías. Esto no era posible con el sitio antiguo sin incurrir en costes considerables cada vez.

Nuestros socios deberían saber que, a pesar de los recortes de personal durante el 2008, la Junta Directiva ha asegurado a nuestros empleados que no habrá más recortes en el 2009. Esto sirve a modo de voto de confianza, necesario y más que merecido,

ya habrá generado un beneficio de 20.000 €. El Club conserva estos beneficios y no Golf Ús. El nuevo calendario de torneos para 2009 en papel satinado sustituye a la antigua cartilla de encuentros. Los costes de impresión de este artículo de calidad, claramente superior, han sido cubiertos por Jyske Bank como patrocinador. Por último, mencionar que el Club recibió 19.000 € de nuestro patrocinador de la tarjeta de recorrido, Reale Insurance, a cambio de un contrato de 2 años. Está claro que los ingresos y ahorros acumulados en este sector han sido sustanciosos sin comprometer la calidad o el servicio.Me complace decir que he recibido muchas fotografías nuevas de Gerry McGuinness, Karl Dammertz, Martin Gutierrez, Michael Denker y Brenda Holland.Mi más sincero agradecimiento a todos ellos.

Históricamente, la tendencia a la baja de los precios de las acciones de Clubs de Golf se debía a factores económicos externos y no a políticas internas del Club. La marca Real Club de Golf Las Brisas tiene un valor precioso tanto para sus accionistas como para su Junta Directiva. Juntos, continuaremos esforzándonos en mantener las tradiciones y sustentar el atractivo de pertenecer al Club de socios que podría definirse como el más codiciado de la costa.

Por último, en lo que respecta al golf, el calendario de torneos de 2009 ya está en pleno apogeo, los hándicaps comienzan a rodar y los socios se concentran en lo más importante, su juego y disfrutar del mismo.

With the passing away of our President, Walter Bonnici, I have on your behalf passed on our deepest sympathies to Carmen and her family. It has been a difficult year in more ways than one. Your Board has had to make some awkward decisions. However the reduction of staff levels will show, in the next few years, a substantial decrease in staff salaries. The problems with the Catering will hopefully be resolved in the near future and hopefully it will be to the satisfaction of the majority of members. The Professional Shop is progressing and we are receiving a satisfactory return for our investment. We have installed new methods of access to starting times i.e. they are no longer available by telephone but via the web page or fax, or indeed physically in the Pro Shop. There may be some initial teething problems but these will resolved, sooner rather than later. On behalf of the Board I would like to wish everyone good health and happy golfing in 2009.

Con motivo del fallecimiento de nuestro Presidente, Walter Bonnici, presenté nuestro más sincero pésame en vuestro nombre a Carmen y a su familia.

Ha sido un año difícil en más de un aspecto. Vuestra Junta tuvo que tomar algunas decisiones complicadas. Sin embargo, el recorte de empleados conllevará en los próximos años una disminución importante en gastos salariales. Los problemas con el Catering esperamos se resuelvan en un futuro próximo para que el servicio sea de la satisfacción de la mayoría de los socios. La tienda de golf va progresando y estamos obteniendo un beneficio satisfactorio por nuestra inversión.

Hemos instalado nuevos métodos de acceso para los horarios de salida, esto supone que ya no estarán disponibles para su reserva por teléfono sino a través de la página web o por fax, o en persona a través de la tienda de golf. Puede que surjan otros problemas iniciales pero se irán resolviendo cuanto antes.

En nombre de la Junta, me gustaría desearos a todos un feliz comienzo de temporada lleno de salud y felicidad para este 2009.

To be held annually, the tournament will be open to the leading 60 players on the ‘Race to Dubai’, formally the European Order of Merit - with players also being given the opportunity to compete for an addition $10,000,000 bonus fund.

The inaugural Race to Dubai will visit a minimum of ten destinations in the fi rst four months following the announcement of the opening sector of The 2009 European Tour International Schedule.

Starting November 6 with the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, The Race to Dubai – which replaces the Order of Merit – will take in China, Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Dubai, India, Malaysia and the United States through to the end of February.

The Race to Dubai comprises all events on The European Tour International Schedule including all European Tour tournaments, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships (WGC’s) ensuring the cream of world golf will qualify for the end-of-season Dubai World Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai, UAE, on November 19-22, 2009.

All players numbered 1 to 60 in The Race to Dubai will be eligible to compete in the Dubai World Championship, the world’s richest golf tournament with a US$10,000,000 prize fund from which the winner will earn US$1,666,660.

The Race to Dubai provides an annual Bonus Pool of US$10,000,000 with the Number

One player receiving US$2,000,000 and The Harry Vardon Trophy, the runner-up US$1,500,000 and the third placed player US$1,000,000 with prizes down to the 15th player who will earn US$250,000.

Both The Race to Dubai and the Dubai World Championship are the creation from the partnership between The European Tour and Leisurecorp, the company developing Dubai’s leading residential golf community at Jumeirah Golf Estates, which is initially in place for fi ve years with an option to extend for a further fi ve years.

George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: “We are especially excited to announce the opening sector of The 2009 European Tour International Schedule as this will launch The Race to Dubai and with it bring a new dimension to our season as all the best players in the world are given the opportunity to compete in the world’s richest golf tournament.

“With the combined prize funds of The Race to Dubai and The Dubai World Championship we can look forward to a momentous season culminating with the prospect of a player standing over a putt for US$3,600,000.”

The winner of The Race to Dubai will also receive a ten year European Tour exemption and the winner of the Dubai World Championship will receive a fi ve year European Tour exemption. From 2010 it is anticipated that The Race to Dubai will commence in January with The Dubai World Championship completing the season in November.

I would like to take the opportunity of wishing you all happy golfing in 2009. Welcome to Kerrie Daniells our new lady captain. We wish her and the ladies section a very successful year.

I hope you are enjoying this new type of newsletter and finding items of interest. The last few months have seen more changes which are designed to improve the club. Las Brisas is a very cosmopolitan club and consequently it is difficult to please everyone but please be assured that we are trying to keep all the members happy. We welcome any constructive suggestions so please address them to Ian Martin our general manager and the board of directors. We commit to reply to all your communications.

As we get into the swing of 2009 we will experience some of the recent changes listed.

Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para desearos a todos una feliz temporada de golf 2009. Doy la bienvenida a Kerrie Daniels como nueva Capitana de Señoras. Le deseamos a ella y a todas las demás señoras un año repleto de éxitos.

Espero que disfrutéis de esta nueva circular y que encontréis en ella artículos de vuestro interés. En los últimos meses hemos sido testigos de muchos cambios que tienen como objetivo la mejora del club. Las Brisas es un club muy cosmopolita y en consecuencia es difícil complacer a todos. Sin embargo, os aseguramos que intentamos que todos los socios estén contentos. Agradeceremos cualquier crítica constructiva que os rogamos dirijáis a nuestro Director General, Ian Martin, y a la Junta Directiva. Nos comprometemos a responder a todas vuestras comunicaciones.

Durante mi estancia como Vicecapitana espero haber prestado a Margaret todo el apoyo posible dentro de mis habilidades. Sé que he adquirido un amplio conocimiento de la sección de señoras en el transcurso del año y espero que ésto me haya dado la experiencia necesaria para hacer que el cambio sea lo más suave posible. Me he encargado también de llevar la Liga que ahora es acogida por Las Brisas. El equipo de señoras de Aloha Golf Club ganó por segundo año consecutivo. A pesar de haber sido en algunos momentos una experiencia ajetreada, he disfrutado plenamente de este reto. Mi equipo siempre estuvo disponible para jugar, ¡incluso bajo la lluvia! Me gustaría agradecerles su dedicación y su espíritu de equipo.

Kim Proctor, nuestra nueva Vicecapitana, ha aceptado hacerse cargo de la Liga durante el 2009 y le deseo tanto a ella como a su equipo toda la suerte del mundo así como un año lleno de éxitos.

Por ultimo, me gustaría felicitar a Margaret por este magnífico año. Les deseo a ambos, Margaret y Austin, un Feliz Año Nuevo y espero que cuando vuelvan a Las Brisas en primavera hayan descansado y estén listos para jugar.

I am very pleased and honoured to be appointed as Lady Captain for the year 2009, and I look forward to seeing you all around the course during the year. I was very lucky indeed when my husband decided to buy me a share at Las Brisas. Not least because of the fantastic facilities that Las Brisas offers, but that I would be able to play what is known to be one of the best golf courses on the Costa del Sol. I never thought for one moment that I would become Lady Captain, and certainly not after 4 years of membership. During my time as Vice Captain I hope that I have supported Margaret to the best of my ability. I know that I have gained a wide knowledge of the Ladies Section over the year, so I hope this will provide me with the experience

needed for a smooth takeover. I have also been running the Liga, which has been hosted by Las Brisas. The Aloha Golf Club Ladies team won for the 2nd year running. Although hectic at times, I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. My team have always been available for play, even in the rain! I would like to thank all of them for their commitment and team spirit. Kim Proctor, our new Vice Captain, has agreed to run the Liga for 2009, and I wish Kim and her team the very best of luck and I hope she has a successful year. Finally, I would like to congratulate Margaret on a successful year. I wish both Margaret and Austin a Happy New Year and hope that when they return to Las Brisas in the spring they will be well rested and ready for golf.

would have to be extensive with drainage lines in close proximity and be totally independent of old existing drains. A major obstacle with installing a new system will be the outstanding work on the sewage system, which has to be completed on the west side of the course. This work involves deep trenching crossing holes three, five and six to house large diameter pipes bringing waste water to the new main, which was installed two years ago. In my opinion the services of a land surveyor would be vital in order to prepare a detailed plan of new drainage and the so called “Phase 3” of the sewage system. This plan should also include new drainage for holes one, two and nine.Thankfully there are few such issues on the second nine where we were even able to cut fairways following some forty-eight hours of almost continuous rain.

The first three weeks of December were colder than at any time during the past fifteen years, with early morning temperatures around zero and white frost covering the course sending the Bermuda into total dormancy.

Prior to this cold period all fairways were fumigated with pre-emergent herbicide to control germination of annual meadow grass as overseeding was not carried out in the autumn. Further fumigation has not been possible due to rainfall, which since September has been twice the average for autumn/early winter. The amount of rainfall has now caused serious problems, particularly on the third and fifth holes where water flows onto the course and filters through the clay subsoil from adjacent land and streets. The only way to put an end to this problem will be considerable investment in new drainage which

In my opinion overseeding should be avoided if possible although the opinion and “feel good” factor of members must of course also be considered. The eradication of weed grasses is difficult when overseeding is practiced on a regular basis, as pre-emergent herbicides cannot be used less than 90 days before overseeding. In all probability, the majority of members would prefer green manicured fairways during the winter months, which favour cool season cultivars. In this case a compromise would be necessary where overseeding could be omitted, say, every five years if the practice of continuous overseeding were to be having a detrimental effect on the long term health of the Bermuda. Las Brisas fairways were planted with Tifgreen 328, which is a more delicate hybrid than Tifway 419 planted on most courses.

Uno de los obstáculos más importantes en la instalación de este nuevo sistema sería el trabajo todavía pendiente en la red de desagüe que debe completarse en el ala oeste del campo. Este trabajo incluye la excavación de zanjas profundas que cruzarían los hoyos tres, cinco y seis para albergar canalizaciones de gran diámetro que conducirían el agua al colector principal que se instaló hace dos años. En mi opinión, sería fundamental contar con los servicios de un topógrafo que preparara un plano detallado de la nueva red y de la denominada “Fase 3” del sistema de drenaje. Dicho plano debería también incluir nuevas canalizaciones para los hoyos uno, dos y nueve. Afortunadamente son pocas las cuestiones de este tipo que afecten a los últimos nueve hoyos, en el que hemos sido incluso capaces de cortar las calles tras prácticamente

Las primeras tres semanas de diciembre fueron las más frías de los últimos quince años, con temperaturas por las mañanas que rozaban los cero grados y con el campo cubierto de escarcha blanca haciendo que la Bermuda quedara completamente aletargada. Antes de este período de frío se habían fumigado todas las calles con herbicida preemergente para controlar el germinado de la Poa ya que no se llevó a cabo la resiembra en otoño. No pudo realizarse un fumigado adicional debido a las lluvias que desde septiembre han duplicado la media habitual de precipitaciones en otoño/principios de invierno. La elevada pluviosidad ya ha ocasionado serios problemas, en concreto en el tercer y quinto hoyo en los que el agua ha inundado el campo y se ha filtrado a través del subsuelo de arcilla a los terrenos y calles colindantes. La única forma de atajar este problema sería realizando una inversión considerable en una

cuarenta y ocho horas de lluvia continua. En mi opinión, la resiembre debería evitarse si es posible, aunque por supuesto, debería tenerse en cuenta el sentir y la sensación de bienestar de los socios. La erradicación de malas hierbas es difícil cuando se practica la resiembre de forma regular ya que los herbicidas preemergentes no pueden utilizarse dentro de los 90 días antes de la resiembre. Con toda probabilidad, la mayoría de los socios preferirían calles verdes y muy cuidadas durante los meses de invierno a las que las variedades de temporada fría se adaptan mejor. En ese caso sería necesario adoptar una estrategia más flexible en el que se omitiría la resiembra, por ejemplo cada cinco años, si la práctica continua de la resiembra estuviera ejerciendo un efecto en detrimento de la salud de la Bermuda a largo plazo. Las calles de Las Brisas se plantaron con Tifgreen 328 que es un híbrido más delicado que el Tifway 419 plantado en la mayoría de los campos.

Dear members,

What has happened this year? I trust there will be as many answers as there are members in Las Brisas. Here are some details we would like you to focus on:

Hopefully, you have found the Golf course looking more open and inviting as a result of an extensive tidying up taking place during the spring & summer of 2008. You will probably also have noticed the re-construction of the 1st tee, making this starting point a better place to begin a round of golf,and one suitable for a great golf course.

You will also have spotted the changes on the 15th hole! This was done in order to prevent balls from regularly flying into the garden to the right and it has been a real success story: Almost no balls in the garden at all, and no further problems for and with the owner, as well as a different playing experience,

with a clear definition of the water alongside the hole.It will be further improved by bunkering and possibly mounding alongside the water for better definition,as we learn more about its playability.

What you might not have noticed are our 2 new watertanks! These tanks will ensure the collection of good quality water to be used on the greens, particularly during dry periods. Other not so obvious changes are the verticutting of fairways, in order to make them appear more dense as well as the decision not to overseed this year. This is done in order to allow the Bermuda to grow strong next year without having to fight new grass. By the way, it also saves money!

So much for what we already did...What we plan to do is far more

important! Hopefully most of you have studied the articles in the last E-newsletter, explaining the scientific studies and the ensuing decision, if you approve, to re-construct the greens. Therefore, I will only briefly touch upon this and later focus on the financing plan as well as the time schedule we wish to propose to the members at the AGM in April.

We know that many members feel the course is really “good enough” as it is. However, it has since long been obvious to many players that particularly the greens have been rapidly deteriorating for the last 6-7 years. To give you an example: Douglas Anderson recently informed us that if we verticut the greens to a depth below 2 mm, a high percentage of the putting surfaces would be destroyed

with recovery taking several weeks. So much for the quality of our “good enough” greens...

Consequently, the Greens Committee decided to ask 4 independent expert companies to advise us properly on the subject. The answers were almost identical: All experts identified the single most important reason for this deterioration as lack of drainage. They also explained that at this stage this process cannot be reversed as both the roots of the grass and the soil underneath is affected. They also informed us that the only real long term solution to our problems would be to re-construct the greens to USGA Standards.There was no disagreement on this point.

Through the years several attempts have been done to improve the situation (returfing etc). However, with poor results. Therefore, we decided that this time we would take expert advice and follow it. We have now understood that the only way to lasting firm greens with perfect drainage is to re-construct them to the highest standards possible (USGA standards). Therefore, this is what we intend to do, again with your approval ! This Greens Committee will only deal with the very best. We will only allow Las Brisas to be involved in high quality, long term solutions, ensuring value for money .

As already mentioned, you will find all details behind this recommendation to the Board and

to the members in the November E-newsletter. In this summary we would like to inform you of the next steps we have taken in order to make things happen in the best possible way:

This autumn we received suggestions for 2 different holes from two golfarchitects who both come highly recommended by members of the Greens Committee. We wanted to see various approaches to our course as well as enable us to get cost estimates etc. from different companies in the golf course construction business based on the exact drawings & plans from these architects. Needless to say that both suggestions are based on USGA standards.

We are well aware that it may always be argued that the course is good enough as it is and that the costs of reconstruction should be pushed forward to a time with a better overall economic climate in the world. In a way, this is also our plan as the works would only begin in 2010. Please note that the expected rise of the annual fee has nothing to do with the project of re-constructing the greens! Our finance plan will be completely separated from the annual budget.

As I referred to earlier , we are in the process of bringing together a finance plan as well as a time schedule for the proposed works. The exact details of this plan will be presented to you when all figures are in place.

We recommend that the re-construction take place in 2 stages. Nine holes at a time. We believe this to be the most practical way as well as the most economical. The members will always have at least 9 holes to play. Each stage will presumably

However, in our point of view none of this is valid. Instead, we are convinced that we have a fantastic window of opportunity right now:

- We believe that the current economic situation will enable us to negotiate the best possible prices for the job to be done,and we will only have the work done by main contractors with proper guarantees in place. Our greens superintendent and staff will continue everyday work on the course until the new one is handed over to us and will not be involved in building our new greens .

- Moreover, the present Greens Committee has unique experience at its disposal for this very complex assignment, and is greatly to the benefit of the Club that I can have this assistance whilst they retain their enthusiasm.

Also, please remember that this course was constructed 40 years ago and never expected to endure more than 40000 rounds of golf each year as is currently the case. This situation is simply not sustainable as the course is inevitably deteriorating year on year. We wish to ask all members for their support and understanding in order to make Las Brisas once again one of the best golf courses on the coast ! If I may add a personal note,we have been passed a wonderful golf course into our safe keeping and I believe it is our duty and privilege to pass it on to our future generations in the great shape we received it. Posterity will not think well of us if we do not!

Estimados socios:

¿Qué ha ocurrido en este último año? Confío en que a esta pregunta habrá tantas respuestas como socios en Las Brisas. Paso a detallar algunos datos en los que querría centrar vuestra atención:

Con un poco de suerte, habréis visto que el campo de golf tiene un aspecto más abierto y acogedor debido a una operación de limpieza de envergadura que tuvo lugar durante la primavera y verano de 2008. Posiblemente también hayáis notado la reconstrucción del primer tee, que lo convierte en un lugar de salida mejor a la hora de comenzar un partido de golf y más apropiado para lo que es un gran campo.

¡Me imagino que habréis notado los cambios en el hoyo 15! Se llevaron a cabo con el fin de evitar que las bolas volaran periódicamente al jardín de la derecha y ha sido un absoluto éxito. No ha habido

prácticamente ninguna bola en el jardín ni más problemas añadidos con y para el propietario, además de constituir una experiencia de juego diferente con una definición clara del agua a lo largo del hoyo. Se mejorará todavía más con el búnker y posiblemente elevando el terreno a lo largo del agua para una mejor definición conforme vayamos sabiendo más sobre sus posibilidades de juego.

Lo que puede que no hayáis notado son los 2 nuevos depósitos de agua. Dichos depósitos asegurarán la recogida de agua de buena calidad para ser usada en los greens, particularmente durante períodos de sequía. Otros cambios no tan obvios son el corte vertical de las calles para hacerlas parecer más densas así como la decisión de no realizar resiembra este año. El objetivo perseguido es permitir que el año que viene la Bermuda crezca más fuerte sin tener que luchar contra

nuevas malas hierbas. A propósito, ¡también supone un ahorro!

Y dejando atrás lo que ya hicimos…

¡Nuestros planes para el futuro son de lejos mucho más importantes! Puede que la mayoría de vosotros haya estudiado los artículos que figuraban en la última circular electrónica en los que se explicaban los estudios científicos y la decisión que sigue, si la aprobáis, de reconstruir los greens. Por lo tanto, mencionaré de pasada este tema y más adelante me centraré en los planes de financiación así como en los plazos que deseo proponer a los socios en la Junta General Ordinaria de Abril.

Sabemos que muchos socios piensan que el campo está “lo bastante bien” como está. Sin embargo, para muchos jugadores resulta obvio desde hace tiempo que los greens se han deteriorado con rapidez en los últimos 6 ó

7 años. Por ejemplo: Douglas Anderson recientemente nos informó que si procediéramos al corte vertical de los greens a una profundidad superior a los 2mm, se destruiría un gran porcentaje de las superficies de putt y su recuperación tardaría varias semanas. A pesar de la “excelente” calidad de nuestros greens…

Por lo tanto, el Comité de Campo decidió pedir a 4 empresas expertas independientes que nos asesoraran correctamente sobre el tema. Las respuestas fueron prácticamente idénticas: Todos los especialistas identificaron la falta de drenaje como el factor más importante causante de dicho deterioro. También explicaron que, llegados a este punto, el

proceso era irreversible ya que tanto las raíces del césped como el subsuelo estaban afectados. Nos informaron igualmente que la única solución real a largo plazo para nuestro problema era la de reconstruir los greens de acuerdo con los estándares de la USGA. Ninguno mostró desacuerdo alguno sobre este punto.

A lo largo de los años se han realizado varios intentos a mejorar de la situación (recolocación de tepes, etc.). Sin embargo, los resultados han sido pobres. Por lo tanto, esta vez decidimos que aceptaríamos el consejo de los especialistas y lo pondríamos en práctica. Entendemos que la única manera de conseguir unos greens duraderos y firmes

con un drenaje perfecto es la de reconstruirlos al más alto nivel posible (al estándar de la USGA). Y eso es lo que tenemos la intención de hacer, pero de nuevo siempre con vuestra autorización. Este Comité de Campo sólo tratará con los mejores asesores. Sólo permitiremos que en Las Brisas se realicen soluciones a largo plazo de alta calidad que aseguren la mejor relación calidad precio.

Como ya he mencionado, encontraréis todos los detalles que respaldan la recomendación dada a la Junta y a los socios en la circular electrónica de noviembre. En este resumen, nos gustaría informaros de los pasos siguientes que hemos seguido para hacer realidad este proyecto

de la mejor manera posible:Este otoño pasado recibimos la sugerencia para dos hoyos distintos por parte de dos arquitectos de golf recomendados fervientemente por socios del Comité de Campo. Queríamos contar con varios enfoques para nuestro campo, así como conseguir presupuestos, costes, etc. de distintas empresas en el negocio de la construcción de campos de golf con los planos y diseños exactos de estos arquitectos. Ni que decir tiene que ambas sugerencias se basaban en los estándares de la USGA.

Como mencionaba anteriormente, estamos en vías de elaborar un plan de financiación así como un calendario para la ejecución de los trabajos propuestos. Los detalles concretos de dicho plan se os presentarán cuando hayamos concretado todas las cifras.

Nuestro consejo para los trabajos de reconstrucción es que se lleven a cabo en dos fases. Cada fase se ocuparía de nueve hoyos. Creemos que este sería el enfoque más práctico así como el más económico. De este modo, los socios siempre tendrán a su disposición al menos 9 hoyos para jugar. Prevemos que cada fase tarde de 3 a 4 meses y que se ejecutarían probablemente entre mayo y agosto.

Somos conscientes de que podría argumentarse que el campo está suficientemente bien como está y que los costes de reconstrucción deben aplazarse para tiempos con mejores perspectivas económicas. En cierto modo, éste es también nuestro plan ya que los trabajos deberían dar comienzo en el

2010. Independientemente de esto, el aumento previsto de la cuota anual no tiene nada que ver con el proyecto de reconstrucción de los greens. Nuestro plan de financiación será completamente independiente del presupuesto anual.

Sin embargo, desde nuestro punto de vista ningún argumento en contra tiene fundamento, sino que estamos convencidos de que la situación actual nos concede una oportunidad magnífica ahora mismo.

Creemos que la situación económica nos permitirá negociar el mejor precio para la realización de los trabajos. Un trabajo que sólo encargaremos a constructores que nos presenten las garantías adecuadas. El superintendente de greens de nuestro campo y su personal continuará su labor diaria en el campo hasta que nos sea entregado el nuevo y no intervendrán en la construcción de nuestros nuevos greens.

Es más, el Comité de Campo actual cuenta con conocimientos únicos a su disposición gracias a socios que se ofrecen a trabajar de forma gratuita en este encargo de gran complejidad en beneficio del Club. Cuento con su ayuda al tiempo que aportan su entusiasmo.

Asimismo, no se olviden de que el campo fue construido hace 40 años y nunca se consideró que tuviera que acoger más de 40.000 partidos anuales como es el caso en la actualidad. Esta situación es simplemente insostenible ya que el campo se está deteriorando inevitablemente año tras año.

Nos gustaría contar con el apoyo y comprensión de todos los socios para convertir Las Brisas una vez más en uno de los mejores campos de golf de la costa. Me gustaría añadir que personalmente siento que hemos heredado un campo de golf maravilloso para que lo cuidemos y creo que es nuestro deber y privilegio hacer que llegue a las generaciones futuras en el estado tan excelente en el que lo recibimos. ¡Qué pensaría la posteridad de nosotros si no lo hiciéramos así!

COMPETITION STABLEFORD ADJUSTMENT (CSA)

On January 1st 2008, The Royal Spanish Golf Federation, following the recommendation of the European Golf Association, adopted a system similar to CSS, Competition Scratch Score, which will be familiar to golfers from Britain and Ireland. The basic principle is that, when calculating the adjustment of handicaps following a competition, allowance will be made for unusual conditions - the relative ease or difficulty of play on the day in question, usually as a result of abnormal weather conditions, by adjusting the day’s par.

By means of Frequently Asked Questions, I shall try to explain the system as briefly and clearly as possible. A full explanation of the rather complex method of calculation of the adjustment is set out in the EGA Handicap System booklets issued by the EGA and the RFEG, both of which are accessible via the internet. Alternatively, Ricardo or I would be delighted to respond to your questions.

Q: How are the unusual conditions which trigger CSA actually measured?Obviously it would be impractical to set a yardstick based on, say, temperature, wind or rainfall. Instead, the main determining factor is the level of scoring of the whole field of players: the fewer scores of 34 points or more, the more likely the course par is to be adjusted for the day.

Q: What other factors are taken into consideration?The actual amount of adjustment will also vary according to the quality of the field of players: for example, the higher the percentage of category 1 (i.e. low) handicap players, the greater the impact on the par for the day.

Q: Any more factors?The size of the field: the adjustment is greater if the number of players exceeds 30.

Q: How much is the adjustment of par for the day?Depending on these factors, the day’s par can be increased by up to 3 strokes or reduced by one.

Q: In a recent competition, I scored only 26 points but my handicap did not increase by 0.1. Why was that?If the general level of scoring is exceptionally poor, in addition to the 3 strokes adjustment to the day’s par, no handicaps will be adjusted upwards. For example, in the recent Jose Banus competition, only 2 players in a field of 39 scored 34 or more points, with the result that the handicaps of no players were increased (even if it appeared on the results sheet as if the handicaps of those who did not hand in cards had increased by 0.1, that was an error, and the handicaps in question were not increased).

Q. How will I know if the day’s par has been adjusted?The results sheet will show “ASC” and the adjustment figure (i.e. +3, +2, +1, -1) or in the case of extreme conditions, “ASC SB” (Reduction Only).

El 1 de enero de 2008, la Real Federación Española de Golf (RFEG), siguiendo la recomendación de la Asociación de Golf Europea (EGA), adoptó un sistema similar al de la CSS (puntuación de competición scratch), con el que probablemente ya estén familiarizados los golfistas británicos e irlandeses. El principio básico está en que al calcular el ajuste de los hándicaps tras una competición se dejará margen para condiciones inusuales, tales como la relativa facilidad o dificultad para jugar en el día en cuestión debido normalmente a condiciones climáticas anormales, a través de un ajuste del par del día.

Por medio de las respuestas a las siguientes preguntas frecuentes, trataré de explicar el sistema lo más breve y claramente posible. Encontraréis una explicación completa de este sistema más bien complejo de cálculo del ajuste en los folletos sobre el sistema de hándicaps de la EGA publicadas por la EGA y la RFEG, ambos disponibles en formato electrónico a través de Internet. P: ¿Cómo se calculan en realidad las condiciones inusuales que desencadenan el ASC?Evidentemente, no sería práctico establecer un criterio basado por ejemplo en la temperatura, el viento o la pluviosidad. En lugar

Hole 4: My drive is plugged (embedded) in the face above the left-hand bunker - do I get relief?

Hole 5: I slice my third shot to the right of the green. After 5 minutes of searching, we have not found it and I return to play another from where I last hit the lost ball. After I have played the second ball, my playing partners find the first one in play. Can I play it?

Hole 6: In match play, we’re all on the green and my putt hits my partner’s ball. What is the penalty?

Hole 7: This time I slice on to the 10th fairway. We’re playing winter rules – can I take a “preferred lie”?

Hole 8: I hook my drive and the ball comes to rest exactly in the centre of the buggy path. I am right-handed and wish to take relief from the path. Which side do I drop? Nearest the fairway or the other side?

Hole 9: My second finishes on the apron beyond the left hand bunker. We are playing winter rules and I replace the ball correctly. I then decide to use a wedge, but on my way back from collecting the club from my bag, a puff of wind starts the ball rolling downhill onto the green and it finishes in the hole. What happens next?

THE ANSWERS: Hole 1: Disqualification (Rule 6-3). Hole 2: True (Rule 26-1c). Hole 3: Yes (local rule). Hole 4: No - it’s not a closely-mown area (Rule 25-2). Hole 5: No. The first one was no longer in play after 5 minutes or when you hit the 2nd ball (Rule 27 -1 a & b). Hole 6: No penalty in match play (rule 19-5). Hole 7: Yes (winter rules apply “through the green”). Hole 8: The Nearest Point of Relief will be on the side furthest from the fairway (Rule 24 -2b). Hole 9: Congratulations on your eagle! (Rule 20-4) - and if you got it wrong, don’t despair, you’re in good company: so did Jack Nicklaus and a Referee on the 15th at Augusta a few years ago!

Visitors are now being logged in by caddy master staff. Due to slope, exit is automatic.• New sentry service daily from 13:30h – 23:00. This area is being covered by our staff until 19:00 each day. >From this time on a security agency will cover the premises until 23:00h.

Members must get accustomed to carry their cards with them at all times. If you lose your card, our administration office will issue you with a new one, deactivating the old one. For those of you who prefer to use a remote control for car park entry, you may purchase one from the office Monday through Friday from 8:00h onwards for a price of 50€. Sorry, but previous remote controls cannot be taken in part exchange. When you invite guests to play with you, please:• Remember that they may arrive before you, so please advise the caddy master staff who they are and they will be allowed to park in the underground car

park. Their names and vehicle information will be duly logged.• Advise them that they may request a day card in the Golf Shop, which will give them access to the locker rooms. For this, a returnable deposit will be requested at the reception desk. This card will be active until the next morning, then automatically deactivated. • Remember even if you have guests for lunch or dinner, they may arrive before you, so please follow the same procedure and there will be no embarrassment. KEEP YOUR HEAD STILLThe biggest thing I worked on this year was keeping my head and body still during my putting. It’s the hardest thing in the world for me because I am always so eager to see where the ball is going.

The slightest movement in my head can throw the putter blade off line resulting in a lip out and a missed putt. Keeping your head still is also a worry-free way for me to putt. I know that if I stroke it well and stay still, the ball will

always go in the hole. So if I keep my head down well after the ball is rolling, nothing can interfere with my stroke. Watch the best putters in the world like Tiger and Aaron Baddley, and you will see they don’t move an inch.

MANTENGA LA CABEZA QUIETAUna de las cosas más importantes sobre la que he estado trabajando este año ha sido el mantener mi cabeza y cuerpo quietos durante el putt. Esto es lo más difícil del mundo para mí porque siempre estoy impaciente por ver dónde va la bola.

El más mínimo movimiento con la cabeza puede hacer que la cara del putter se desplace en otra dirección dando lugar a un lip out y fallando el putt. Mantener la cabeza quieta es la forma más segura de hacer el putt. Sé que si golpeo bien y me quedo quieta, la bola siempre irá al

hoyo. De modo que si mantengo mi cabeza mirando hacia abajo incluso después de que la bola haya comenzado a rodar, nada interfi ere en mi golpe. Observen a los mejores jugadores del mundo tales como Tiger o Aaron Baddley y verán que al hacer el putt no se mueven ni un milímetro.
