ARTS &CULTURE
Through our own instructors and in a unique partnership with the Honolulu Museum of Art, Kroc Center Hawaii brings you art classes to explore your creative side while gaining lifetime skills.
PETER SHEPARD COLEPeter Shepard Cole is an Oahu based artist working
primarily in oil on canvas. His paintings deal with
Hawaii’s unique history and vulnerable environment,
while addressing painting’s historic role in the
representation of cultural identity. He was raised
on the North Shore of Oahu, received his MFA from
the San Francisco Art Institute and his BA from the
University of California San Diego.
JOANNA LAMJoanna Lam was born and raised in the state of
Hawaii, and in 2010 earned her Bachelor degree in
Studio Art, focusing in drawing and painting, and a
minor in dance at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Joanna has studied the techniques of traditional
masters in an Atelier program and is now a working
artist, teaching art classes to children as young as
four years old through adults. Joanna’s heart and
life’s passion is to use the many forms of art and
dance as worship for the glory of God to inspire and
impact people of all generations and nationalities.
JESSE VELASQUEZBorn and raised on the Leeward side of Oahu, Jesse
started dabbling with spray paint at the age of 14.
He now creates murals and art work with spray paint
as his main medium; his artwork is influenced by
culture, graffiti art, and everyday life.
RALPH DELA CRUZ Like Jesse, Ralph enjoys creating murals with
spray paint and is a part of 808 Urban’s Waipahu
Jr. Board. He recently graduated from Waipahu
High School and is excited to be sharing his love
of art with others.
KULAMANU KALA GOODHUEManu has a background in education and floral
design. She was an instructor at the Floral
Design Institute in Portland, Oregon, before
returning home to Hawai’i in 2004. She is
currently an elementary teacher in Nanakuli. In
2013, she launched Posy Parties, a home-based
business specializing in wedding and event
flowers and creative floral design classes.
CINDY BAUGHMANCindy is a wife and mother of two young
adult children. She has been teaching rubber
stamping classes for the past 15 years and enjoys
teaching others to discover their hidden talents
and creativity. She is a Senior Executive with
Stampin’ Up! and enjoys listening to inspirational
music and being a worship leader at her church,
New Hope Leeward. Her passions are sharing
with others, singing, rock climbing and spending
time with family and friends.
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
GARID CHAPMANGarid Chapman was born in Virginia and raised
in Hawaii. Growing up, his family always
encouraged traveling and he made as many trips
as he could to places like Australia, New Zealand,
Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Indonesia. Traveling
had a tremendous impact on his life as he was
able to experience various cultures, art, wildlife
and nature. He graduated from UH Manoa with
a Bachelors of Arts having a focus on ceramic
sculpture. He enjoys making ceramic cartoon
characters painted with bright acrylics, reflecting
his love of wildlife, claymation and his inner child.
He is happy to be able to share his work with
audiences of all ages and especially likes sharing
art through working with kids. It’s great to inspire
young minds and teach them a healthy, productive
and creative outlet.
RACHEL LAVATAIRachel was born and raised here on Oahu. She is
a Meteorology student at UH Manoa and enjoys
music, science classes, hiking, Stand-Up-Paddle,
and all outdoor activities. Making jewelry is a
hobby-turned-business and she loves to share with
others how you don’t have to spend a fortune on
accessories when you can make them yourself!

GETTING STARTEDThere are four levels in the Learn-To-Swim Program. Each level
includes the teaching and assessment of swimming and water
safety skills. Students are moved through the progressive levels as
they accomplish the skills required at each level. Please note that
a student may remain at the same level for multiple sessions until
they master the skills necessary to advance to the next level. The
lessons are taught in small group classes by Certified American
Red Cross Instructors and Aides. Kroc Instructors make swimming
lessons fun and help students develop both swimming skills and
self confidence. Swim lessons range from 25–45 minutes in length.
Five minutes are given between lessons to enter and exit the
pool. For maximum efficiency, please be on time and dressed in
swimwear prior to the lesson start time. Please remember to bring
a towel.

PICKUP GAME POLICY Pickup basketball and volleyball are designed for adults ages 18
and over to play a few friendly games. Players under the age of 18
will need a parent or guardian present in the gym at all times.
If there are multiple players or teams are waiting, a wait list will be
created in the kiosk by the Gym Attendant to sign up your team
for the next game. This will allow an organized way for teams to
compete. The next team on the list will be on the side of the court
keeping score.
BASKETBALL: Games are to 21 by 1’s and 2’s. Since there are no
official referees on–site for basketball, players will have to call their
own fouls and ref their own games. No shooting free throws, as
fouls will be taken out at half court.
VOLLEYBALL: Minimum of 6 players. Games are to 21. Next team
will ref the game by calling serve, net violations, and provide two
(2) line judges.
To allow everyone the opportunity to compete, the winning team
will stay on the court for a maximum of two (2) consecutive games.
On their second win, the losing team will stay on and the winning
team can be placed back on the wait list in the kiosk.
Come join other adults who wish to play sports in an atmosphere
that is compliant with The Salvation Army policies and procedures
of Kroc Center Hawaii. The Kroc Center Hawaii Athletic Center has
a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY — NO CUSSING OR FIGHTING. Players
who do so will be dismissed immediately from the Athletic Center
and be asked NOT to return until the next day. Kroc Center Hawaii
memberships can and will be revoked if deemed necessary by the
Member Services Desk.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Meaningful messages, good tunes,
stuff kids like and a group of friendly people who just want
to make a difference.
Kroc Center Hawaii is more than a fitness club or community center—it is also a place of Christian
worship. Each Sunday, people of all ages and backgrounds come to worship God, celebrate
community, and strengthen family connections. We are simply a group of people with
a common desire to love Jesus and love people. We invite you to join us. Bring
your whole family. We have something for the little keikis as well as the
teenagers. And no need to get dressed up, we’ll be honored to have
you just the way you are. We are looking forward to meeting you.
OHANA GROUPSJoin an Ohana Group today! It’s a small
group of 8–10 people getting together
weekly in a home, office or coffee shop. We
talk about the sermon, open up our Bibles,
pray for one another, and occasionally
eat! This is where friendships are made,
encouragement is found, and growth in
the Lord happens. For more information
or to join an Ohana Group, please contact
Thomas Cheong at (808) 693–8319 or
OHANA PLAYDAYSOhana PlayDays are relaxed, informal
events/activities designed to meet new
people and have a good time! Some
of the exciting Ohana PlayDays that we
have planned include volleyball, indoor
soccer, softball, flag football, ping pong,
bingo, kick ball, dodge ball and board
games. For more information on our
next Ohana PlayDay, please contact

KROC SAFETY INFORMATIONThe Salvation Army is dedicated to keeping children and
vulnerable adults safe from physical, emotional and sexual
harm. We refer to our safety efforts as “Protecting The
Mission.”
Protecting The Mission guidelines ensure The Salvation Army
Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center emphasizes
safety in the following ways:
• Salvation Army personnel (officers, employees and
volunteers) are trained in child abuse prevention and are
mandated reporters of suspected child/vulnerable adult
abuse.
• Salvation Army personnel undergo criminal background
checks.
• Adults accessing the facility may be screened against
public sexual offender registry.
• Instructors are trained in appropriate interactions with
Kroc members to enhance learning by creating a safe
and inviting environment.
• Programs involving children are closely monitored to
ensure adequate supervision and safe interactions
between Kroc personnel and children.
• In order to promote a safe and secure environment, The
Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community
Center has placed video cameras in various locations.
As part of our commitment to the safety of children
and vulnerable persons, Kroc Center Hawaii reserves the
right to consult public sources to determine whether any
member or guest of any member poses an unreasonable
risk of harm to its patrons, staff, or visitors.
• Kroc Center Hawaii constantly adapts and enhances
safety protocols to adjust to needs.
Members and guests are encouraged to report suspicious
behavior. Forms for anonymous reporting, called
Confidential Notices of Concern, are available at the
