Economics is not just money. It's businesses and how they work. It's lemonade stands and

how many dollars they take in. It's toy collecting and baseball card collections. It's taxesand allowances. It's stocks and bonds. Economics is part of almost everything you could

    SWEDEN IN THE CREATIVE AGE

A copy of the book is available in the library.

35% of the Swedish workforce is engaged in creative types of occupation, belonging to what we callCreative Class: managers, professionals, researchers, artists and other associated professional figures.

However, such transformation and results are not evenly spread out in the country. Sweden exhibits avery high degree of concentration in its creative resources: 30% of all Swedish Creative Class is locatedin the Stockholms ln, and almost 60% of all Swedish Creative Class is concentrated in three regions:Stockholms ln, Skne ln (the Malm-Lund region), and Vstra Gtalands ln (the Gteborg region).

Innovation activities also appear strongly concentrated. Although several smaller regions exhibit very

innovative economic structures, still, in absolute values, about 47% of all high tech patents applicationsare concentrated in the Stockholm area.

These and other findings suggest that large, dense, and well connected city-regions have a clear advantagein their ability to attract, leverage high stocks of creative talent, and to nurture the necessary social andeconomic diversity to sustain their growth.

The three regions around Stockholm, Gteborg, and Malm attract 64% of all the foreign born population(while they account for 50% of national population). These regions also have a special edge in attractingpeople engaged in artistic and performing activities (what we called bohemians). Stockholm aloneaccounts for 43% of the Swedish total bohemians, and if we add the Vstra Gtaland and Skneregions, the three of them make up for about 70% of the Swedish Total.

    Gothenburg: an economic overview

Gothenburgs 500,000-strong population makes it the second-largest city in Sweden afterStockholm, and the fifth-largest city in Scandinavia.

    Economy

Gothenburg has the largest port in Scandinavia. This and its advantageous central location have

established the city as an important centre for trade and shipping, and the economy continues tothrive through these sectors.

Manufacturing and heavy industry also contribute significantly to the citys economy. Majorcompanies in these sectors include SKF, Ericsson and Volvo. The latter is the largest employerin these sectors in Gothenburg. Although these industries are gradually being replaced by high-tech industries, they retain an important role in the citys economy.

Banking and finance are also important, as is the tourism industry, thanks to Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport, which lies approximately 20 miles outside the city.

    Immigration

Like most Swedish metropolitan areas, Gothenburg has a large immigrant population. Accordingto Statistics Sweden, around 20% of Gothenburgs inhabitants are an immigrant population, comprised almost entirely by Finnish and Iranian people.
