PROJEK: WALKWAY BRIDGE DESIGN SUMMARY It is proposed to construct a walkway bridge between two existing buildings as shown on the attached drawing. The bridge can be designed as either, (i) Reinforced concrete slab, beam and column or (ii) Reinforced concrete slab with the beams and columns made of structural steel S275. or (iii) Reinforced concrete for slab and column and the beam is made from steel. Discuss between group members whether to design the bridge as simply supported or continuous construction and the reasons behind the selection. PROJEK: WALKWAY BRIDGE DESIGN

SUMMARY

It is proposed to construct a walkway bridge between two existing buildings as shown on the attached drawing. The bridge can be designed as either,

(i) Reinforced concrete slab, beam and column or(ii) Reinforced concrete slab with the beams and columns made of structural steel

S275. or(iii) Reinforced concrete for slab and column and the beam is made from steel.

Discuss between group members whether to design the bridge as simply supported or continuous construction and the reasons behind the selection.

The distance between the buildings is 12 metres and it is essential that access is maintained with a clear headroom of 3.5 m and two ‘corridors’ of width 6.0 m and 4.5 m respectively.

The new structure is to be considered as a completely separate structure from the two existing buildings and it may be assumed that all necessary access at the required level of entry into the buildings is possible. Similarly it may be assumed that footings for the new structure can be constructed at whatever level and within the confines of the perimeter of the existing buildings as are necessary.

It is your group task, to prepare the necessary calculations and drawings to enable Tender Documents to be prepared.

REQUIREMENTS

You are required to prepared the following:

(a) A Structural General Arrangement Drawing using AUTOCAD showing Plan, Elevation and Sections of your proposed scheme with all necessary dimensions of beams, columns and slabs etc. clearly indicated.

(b) Design calculations for the Walkway Slab, supporting beams, and one typical column and one typical pad footing.

(c) Detail Drawings for the above members.

DESIGN INFORMATION

1. The Reinforced Concrete is to be design according to EC2. If steel is used, the design should comply BS5950.

2. Loadings to be taken from BS 6399:Part 1:1984 (Crowd Loading) – given with this instructions.

3. Walkway will be surfaced with 20 mm of waterproofing using aspalt. 4. Allowable bearing pressure at 1m below ground level is 250 kN/m2.

5. The type of exposure is XC3/4.

COMMENTS

1. Initial member sizing calculations need not be submitted but may be asked for from certain individuals to confirm parts of their work.

2. There are obviously many possible “answer” to this project as all important structural member sizes have been left to you to design. Group individuality will gain marks.

3. Choice of materials (i.e. Grade of Concrete or type of steel reinforcement will be left to your judgement, but must be relevant to EC2 or BS5950).Calculations should include all engineering decisions make together with any explanation necessary to make them clear.

SUBMISSION

1. All calculations are to be written on standard calculation sheets as shown below and bound with cardboard covers to A4 size.

2. All drawings are to be done in Autocad and submitted with the calculations.3. If design software is used, submit the results together with the report.
