Dear Parents:

This is the final newsletter of the 2016/17 school year. On behalf of

Mr. Zadeiks and the staff at Chimney Hill I would like to wish everyone a safe

and enjoyable summer!

It has been a great privilege to get to know many of you and to work

with your children. Chimney Hill will always hold a special place in my

memories. Quite frankly, I have loved my time here. This is a very special

Community. Being your principal has been a privilege.

School Opening in September

On Tuesday, September 5th our school will be in session

for grades 1 – 7 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. During that time

teachers will take attendance and review school procedures.

We will have a list posted in the front of the school to indicate

which rooms the students will go to for the first day.

Students in grades 1, 2 and 3 will be dismissed from the same

location at 11:00 a.m.

Late in the summer, parents of new Kindergarten

students will receive letters containing information about their

schedule for the first week of school.

Due to the uncertainty regarding our enrolment,

students in grades 1-7 may spend the first week in grade

groups and they will have contact with all the teachers at their

level. This provides an opportunity to get to know our new

students and create balanced classes. We thank parents in

advance for your patience during the opening days. We are a

very large school and experience has taught us that it is worth

taking the time to build classes carefully. We endeavor to form

classes as quickly as possible.

Student Placements

We place students in classes very carefully

and use the following criteria:

Student intellectual, social and emotional

development

Learning styles and strengths of students

Degrees of independence in students’ work

habits

Integration of special needs students

Separating students who do not work well

together

Adhering to class size limits

As always, at our school there may be combined

grade (split grade) classes at most grade levels.

There is a good chance that most Chimney Hill

students will be placed in a combined class two or

three times during their elementary school years.

There has been much research that shows students

perform just as well or better in combined classes.

Grade Seven Students Compete in 2017 Gauss

Contest

Thirty of our grade seven students recently

competed in the 2017 Gauss Mathematics Contest

organized by the University of Waterloo. The test,

which is considered quite challenging, was comprised of

25 questions that progressively got more difficult.

While it is out of a possible 150 points, a score over 100

on this test is considered very good and over 125 is

considered exceptional. Anaya Jhutti achieved a score

of 117, Faizan Saheed earned 116, Sanjana Duhra, Jovan

Gill, and Jesslynn Hayer each scored 111, while Liam

Penados received 109. Also scoring over 100 were

Keerat Jhangria and Hassan Shafi. The grade seven teachers are very proud that almost 40% of our grade seven students participated in this very difficult contest.
