Dear Herberich Families, I cannot believe we only have five weeks left of school. I would like to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to teach your child. Before I know it, the classrooms and hallways will be way too quiet. Please take time over the summer to make those special memories with family and friends. Our 3 rd and 4 th grade students will be taking their Ohio Achievement Assessments on May 5 th and May 7 th . If you need to schedule doctor appointments, I ask that the appointments are in the afternoon since testing will be conducted both mornings until noon. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast next week. I will be meeting with all students to discuss building expectations and school rules as the school year comes to an end. One of the topics I will be discussing is flip flops. The wearing of flip flops will be highly discouraged as this has created a few injuries and several malfunctions (shoes falling apart) in the past. For your child’s safety, I ask that they come to school with shoes they can run in and support their feet. Communication is key as we end the 2013/2014 school year. The months of May/June have many planned activities. If you have not done so, please take a minute to sign up for CFCS Connect. This only takes a few minutes and can be completed through the Herberich website. Signing up is free and will keep you up to date with the latest news. Dear Herberich Families,

I cannot believe we only have five weeks left of school. I would like to thank

you for allowing us the opportunity to teach your child. Before I know it, the

Adapted from : http://carrotsareorange.com/7-tips-motivate-children-summer/

With summer and the end of school approaching, now is the perfect time to create a plan that will

help motivate children to continue learning during the warmer months ahead. Studies show that summer break often leads to a loss of learning, setting kids behind in a variety of subjects when school starts again in the fall. Here are a few simple ideas for parents to help motivate children to continue learning and avoid the summer brain drain. Have a Plan Think about what you would like to help your child learn in the next few months and create an action plan. Ask your child’s teacher for suggestions or look over past report cards for ideas. Don’t just look at things from an academic angle; summer is a great time to work on building life skills like learning to ride a bike or basic cooking. Make it Fun Sometimes the best way to learn is to sneak learning into a fun activity. For example, use an online program like Raz-Kids or EM online. Create a Routine Creating a consistent routine will give your child something to look forward to each day. For example, each morning you could have them spend 15 minutes learning from a workbook and then spend 15 minutes reading each evening. Fitting in little chunks of learning throughout the day will add up by the end of summer and will help keep your child’s mind actively engaged. Build Anticipation Create a list of learning activities and make a goal to complete one each day. Make it visual by putting the activities into a format like a calendar or on paper strips that can be drawn from a jar. The activities can be as simple as writing a letter, finishing a puzzle or reading a new book. Give Rewards A reward system can be a great way to motivate children to reach various goals. Points, fake money or stickers can be given for completing various tasks. Once the child reaches a certain number of points they can exchange them for a prize or privilege. Keep it Social Involve grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friends in learning activities to help motivate kids. Learning with someone who isn’t a parent or teacher often helps encourage kids or gives them a new perspective. Praise the Effort Be sure to praise your child’s effort for a job well done, for working hard and for learning something new. Taking this approach costs nothing and can be a helpful motivator for learning and building self-esteem.

It is so hard to believe that we are at the end of the school year already! I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing summer and I look forward to seeing you all in August!

We have been quite busy in physical education class learning how to engage

in regular physical activity both inside and outside of school to meet national

recommendations for daily physical activity (60 minutes a day). The students

learned what type of activities count towards their daily physical activity

minutes, and what type of activities to cut back on. The students then were

asked to recall the different activities they participated in over a seven day

period from PE class, recess, at home, and in the community. This lesson is a

valuable tool to becoming life-long movers.

Just as a reminder as the weather starts to finally warm up, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for physical education class; loose clothing to move around in, shorts under skirts, and tennis shoes.

Here are some important dates to remember as we start to close out a wonderful school year:

3rd

/4th

GRADE FUN FITNESS RUN: Monday May 12th

at 3:00. Student MUST have a signed permission slip to

participate (look for a permission slip coming home shortly).

K-3rd

GRADE FIELD DAY: Monday May 19th

9:30-11:30: a.m. Kindergarten, 1st and 3

rd grade classes

1:30-3:30: p.m. Kindergarten, 2nd

and 4th grade classes

If you would like to volunteer for either of these two fun events, please email me your availability. These events could not be possible without the amazing volunteers here at Herberich. [email protected]

Way to go Herberich!! This year we raised over $4,000 dollars for The American Heart Association. If you child earned prizes, they will be distributed in PE class. Thank you to all who participated - It takes Heart to be a Hero!!

Remember- Keep Moving!! Mrs. Amy Belles Physical Education Teacher

Congratulations to the Music Star Student from the 3rd

Quarter- Alyssa!

Alyssa is a 3rd

grader in Mrs. Wade’s class. Alyssa is always cheerful and has

a great attitude in the music classroom. She comes to music eager and ready

to participate and have fun. She was also a member of the Herberich Choir

this year! Alyssa won a prize of movie treats to go along with our music class

behavior theme this year- “Lights, Camera, Act…Your Best!”

All students have the opportunity to earn Star Student tickets throughout each

quarter to be entered into a drawing for the Star Student prize. Students earn

tickets by demonstrating exceptional behavior, being great student leaders,

going above and beyond what they are asked to do, and/or showing their

musical knowledge by answering tough questions. There were a lot of tickets

entered into the drawing, proving what fantastic students we have here at

Herberich! All students should keep working hard to earn tickets for a chance

to be our 4th Quarter Music Star Student.

Great job Alyssa- you’re a STAR!!!

Many thanks to all of our Herberich families for the wonderful book donations to our library!

Laura Numeroff is our “Author of the Month”. She has written many books about the adventures of some

of our favorite characters – Mouse, Moose, Pig and Cat. She has always been an avid reader herself, and realized that writing for children combined her three favorite things to do: writing stories, drawing, and read-ing! If You Give a Mouse a Cookie was the tenth book she wrote. The idea came to her on a long, boring car trip. Our library has an extensive collection

of her books that we enjoy reading!

There is a key that can take you around the world. It can take you back in time. It can even take you into the homes and lives of famous people.

It is a key to knowledge, a key to adventure, and a key to enjoyment. And this key is available to everyone! What is the key?

Greetings Parents and Young Artists!

Can you believe that summer is almost upon us!? What an amazing year this has been and I want to thank everyone for their support and involvement in the Art program. We had a fantastic turn out for this year’s Art Show and I want to thank all of the parents, families, friends and students who came out to see the amazing work that Herberich’s young artists came up with throughout the year. I know how hard they all have been working and everyone should be proud of the work they have done.

Our Kindergarteners have grown so much since the beginning of the year and have finally completed their color wheels which

will be coming home with them soon! Please keep this as an Art tool that your student can refer back to throughout their elementary years. We have explored a variety of content and creatures in our last few months. Each student has worked with collage for our Eric Carle ladybugs, weaving our butterfly overlay pieces, and using coffee filters to make our own 3-D butterflies. I am excited about the progress that this group has made and look forward to seeing them in 1st grade.

The First grade will be taking on flowers and faces as we sweep through Spring. The First grade has been getting into the season, though it may not seem like it outside, as we study Georgia O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe is very well known for her large scale paintings of bold flower blooms, often only showing a single flower in so much detail that it fills the whole frame. Our bold blooms are working with oil pastels and as students learned about the parts of a flower and blending to create soft, beautiful color. Each student created their own unique flower and they are doing a fantastic job working on their drawing skills. The first-grade classes will take a break from Art for a “Social Studies Lesson” on Face Maps this month. We will be learning how to draw the face as if it were a map of “Egg Island” and students will take what they learn and apply it to their own self-portraits. We also imagine Spring in full bloom and as we learn about how to paint a field of spring flowers with all different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures.

We have been working on self-portraits in Second grade that have been transformed and adapted as each students’ desires, inspired by one of our featured Artists of the Month, Pablo Picasso. These colorful portraits are awesome abstractions of our second graders and I love seeing the creative choices each student made to make the drawing of them unique. Second graders will be working with oil pastels and blending to create the soft look that is Georgia O’Keeffe’s trademark for their upcoming magnified blooms. Students will continue learning about what colors they can blend together for their drawing by working with the color wheel. This group is really developing into a great group of artists and they have a lot of talent.

The Third grade has been hard at work with our last couple projects. The still-life vases turned out absolutely beautiful and students created amazingly unique designs with their pieces. We have also been learning about architecture and perspective for our current project that is inspired by the work of the artist, Marz Jr. Marz’s work uses bold outlining and constrasts black and white drawn elements with bright colors to highlight the focal point of his work. Each student is using a photograph to draw a building of their choice in perspective. This is a very creative group! Keep up the good work Third grade and I look forward to having you again for your final year at Herberich!

The Fourth grade artists are becoming pros at portrait drawing! The group has been learning about the contemporary portrait

artist, Chuck Close, over the past month and taken inspiration from his work. Close creates large scale portraits and self-portraits in which he draws a grid to section off the painting. The grid on both the photo he works from and his canvas help him to look at small sections at a time and recreate what he sees on a larger scale. While Chuck Close fills in each square in the grid with small abstract paintings that come together to make an image when you step back, the Fourth graders are using their grid to follow the outlines from a photo of themselves. I am completely blown away by the students’ efforts with these self-portraits. They look fantastic so far and look forward to displaying them in the school and sharing them with all of you.

Fourth graders will finish up our last week with cartooning as a fun way to tell a story and convey new ideas. Each student is working on a 3 frame cartoon which tells a story and develops characters using pictures and expressions rather than words to convey meaning. I wish all of you a wonderful summer and the best of luck to the as you continue your creative journey at the Middle School. I will definitely miss the fourth graders, but look forward to seeing their creations in the future and to seeing them grow into the amazing artists they are!

Best wishes for an amazing summer.

Until next time, keep creating!

Artfully Yours,

Mrs. Ely
