Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson End of Term As this week draws to a close, we have also reached the end of the second term. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable winter break. It s that time of year to find a warm and comfy spot and snuggle up with a good book. The school office will be closed from this Friday 5 July and re-open again on Monday 22 July. Staff will return on the 22 nd for a school development day and stu- dents in all year groups will return on Tuesday 23 July when normal classes will resume for the third term. This newsletter contains a number of reports on recent activities, including junior debating, the Engadine Band- fest, Mufti Day fundraising, Term 2 Drama, Year 8 Medieval Japanese project and an Hospitality industry immersion week for a lucky staff member, Mrs Doherty. Enjoy. Year 8 into 9 Subject Selections While we are only half way through the 2019 school year, planning is well under way for the 2020 school year. Year 10 have completed their subject choices for next year and now it is Year 8’s turn to choose subjects for 2020. The process will get underway when we return next term. Year 8 will attend briefing sessions during the first week of term 3. These sessions will introduce the elective choices to students. On Thursday 25 July (Week 1, Term 3), we will hold an infor- mation evening for Year 8 students and parents. The evening will cover HSC minimum standards in literacy and numeracy; Elective course selections for 2020; study pathways for students from Year 9 and beyond and tips from past students on how to choose elective courses. The evening will run between 7:00-8:00pm in our school hall. We look forward to seeing you on the night. Bushfire Drill An evacuation drill was held on Monday morning to practice our emergency action plan in case we are under attack from a bushfire. While it is not fire season at the moment, the dry winter will increase the threat of bushfires in the late spring and early summer. In the case of a bushfire, our action plan is to meet in the Quad before making our way to St Ives Shops. A careful analysis of the drill allows us to iron out any complications before we have a real emergency. Sports Awards As we had all of the students together in the quad following the bushfire drill, Mrs Terrey made the most of the oppor- tunity to present sporting awards to a number of students. The girls A futsal team who won their zone grade sport competition during the autumn sporting season received a sporting medal and special mention was made of the seven Zone Cross Country students who have made it through to State Cross Country. Parent Teacher Night We held our final parent teacher interviews/conferences on Tuesday evening this week. Parents of students in Years 7 and 9 had their turn to meet with teachers and many parents had their children with them to attend the meetings. Building Works Update It is our understanding that work will begin on both of our building projects over the school holidays. ACH Clifford has been awarded the contract to refurbish C-Block and they intend to begin work next week. It is anticipated that this project will be completed at the end of this year with classes in the upgraded facilities being held from the begin- ning of next year. St Hilliers have been awarded the contract to build the new stadium. Work will not begin on this project until its Development Application has been approved by Ku-ring-gai Council. In preparation, hoarding will be placed around the construction site making it out of bounds for students and staff. We had initially been advised that this would occur this week but it will now take place from next Monday. The outdoor basketball hoops will be relocated on the Quad while the building works are underway. Holiday Activities Year 12 and Matilda While we are on break for the next two weeks, Year 12 students will be focused on study. Their trial examinations are being held in weeks 3 and 4 of next term. Many teachers are giving up time over the holidays to work with their students. In fact it is so many we have had to organise a timetable so that there are no clashes and Year 12 students can get to all sessions. The timetable is: Term 2 Week 10 5 July 2019

SWAGS FOR THE HOMELESS FUNDRAISER

On Wednesday 26 June, the Year 12 Community and Family Studies ran a fundraiser to raise money to buy swags for the homeless. The class have recently been studying groups within society, and decided that together, they wanted to raise enough money to buy five swags to donate to the homeless and make a difference for those in need. The students created a video for awareness of the need for homeless individuals to have a bed and shelter every night and created a mufti day with the theme of beanies, scarves and gloves. They then ran a sausage sizzle and brought in baked goods from home to sell and raise money to buy swags. Baked goods were also donated by grandparents to give to the cause. A Year 7 student by the name of Libbie D-S even made cupcakes that were decorated with mini scarves and beanies! Together with a generous donation from St Ives Lions Club, the students raised over $1000 and will be purchasing the Street Swags by the end of the term. Emily Brown TAS Teacher

U15 BOYS KNOCKOUT BASKETBALL

Last Friday our students travelled to Homebush Boys HS to play in round two of the Sydney North Knockout Competition. Our boys put in a competitive performance but unfortunately were not able to match the height and three-point shooting of the opposition eventually losing 69 – 51. Strong performances by Seth S, Gavin H, Zac L and Caerwyn S kept St Ives in the hunt for most of the match. Special praise for Seth S who displayed outstanding coaching ability and leadership in our training sessions and throughout the match. Thank you Mrs Larratt & Mrs Hakim for helping to provide transportation to and from the game. Michael Kettels Head Teacher PDHPE

A BUSY TERM 2 FOR DRAMA STUDENTS

It has been a busy and exciting term for Drama. In Week 5, the Fools in Progress Theatre Company performed at the school for all of Year 7 and 8 Drama students. The Year 8 Drama class also were involved in a Commedia Dell’arte per-formance workshop, where they learnt how to use a range of commedia techniques. They all had a fun day and learnt many new performance skills. One Year 9 Drama class has also been busy making films for the Videos for Change program, with the help of filmmak-er, Mark Taylor. Watch out for their films. On Tuesday, Drama, Music and Philosophy students from Year s8 and 9 went to the Sydney Opera House to see the play The Red Tree, based on Shaun Tan’s acclaimed picture book. The students had a great day and thoroughly en-joyed the eye-catching musical performance. Cate Whittle English and Drama Teacher

TEACHERS INDUSTRY IMMERSION WEEK

This week I participated in the Teachers Industry Immersion Week, a joint initiative between the Department of Education and William Angliss Institute. It is specifically for teachers of Kitchen Operations (back of house) and Hospitality (front of house). At St Ives we deliver both - Kitchen Operations to Years 11 and 12 and Hospitality to Year 10. I applied for a position in the Hospitality program and feel extremely privileged to have been successful. Over 100 teachers applied for the program in 2019 and only 20 teachers from across NSW were selected. Each day we have participated in industry workshops delivered by experts in their field, including molec-ular gastronomy, tea tasting, cold press coffee, wine matching, poke bowl creation, working with choco-late and latte art. The week concluded with a long lunch in which Principals, RTO members and repre-sentatives from the department of education attended. The menu included crab and cauliflower cappuc-cino, qual sausage with truffle and cherries, beef tataki and an assortment of desserts that were perfect-ly paired with Dilmah fine Teas. In addition to the lunch, Thursday night we hosted a formal fine dining dinner for 60 guests. We worked with a guest chef who has two Michelin hats, Alessandro Pavoni and served industry representatives and Directors of Education. I have definitely been inspired and have learnt so many wonderful skills that I would like to bring to the classroom. My students are definitely going to reap the benefits of my participation. My Year 11 class can look forward to making Poke bowls and having a go at molecular gastronomy in order to enhance and garnish their work and year 10 can look forward to learning about tea and using tea to make some fun, tasty mocktails. DEBATING NEWS

On Friday 28 June, eight students from Years 9 and 10 travelled to Killara High School for a packed day of debating for the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Year 9 team was up first, competing against the Year 10 Killara team. The topic of the first debate was ‘That animals should be banned from all sports’. The team argued in the affirmative and despite their best efforts, the debate narrowly fell to Killara. The Year 10 St Ives team followed on and debated in the negative on the topic ‘That performance enhancing drugs be legalised in sports’ and were successful in what was an impressive battle. St Ives defeat-ed the Year 9 Killara team. Overall it was a great day with all teams having furthered their skills and developed as debaters. Following on from Friday's Round 2 debates at Killara, St Ives hosted Round 3 on Monday 1 July. The first debate was between the two Year 9 teams from St Ives and Killara High School. The topic for the debate was ‘That religious institutions should not be exempt from anti-discrimination laws’. In a fiery debate which touched on anti-discrimination, churches, and the rights of students in school, where St Ives argued in the affirmative, St Ives were successful. This takes the Year 9 team to 2/3 wins which places them in a great position leading into the finals. The second debate between the Year 10 teams was hard fought on the topic of ‘That the voting age be lowered to 16’. St Ives argued again in the affirmative and was narrowly defeated in a very competitive debate. On 2 August, the Year 9 St Ives team will compete against Killara High School's Year 10 team to decide the winner of the zone. The winner of this debate will progress through to the next stage of the Premier's Debating Challenge. Congratulations to the following students for representing St Ives with such enthusiasm. Isabella B, Ashley W, Vishwa D, Emi-ly D, Zoe T, Jack L, Jessie B, Pip R, Isla J, Keetan S, Nina K. On Thursday, Pittwater High School visited St Ives High School for a day of debating between our Year 7 and 8 teams. The first debate between the competing Year 8 teams was on the topic of 'that examinations be banned in the junior school and replaced by assessment tasks'. St Ives argued in the negative and built their argument around the central idea that whilst tests are stressful, stress is a natu-ral component of the modern life, and as schools we need to expose students to healthy levels of stress to ensure success in later life. Pittwater provided healthy rebuttals but were defeated by a fiery St Ives team. The second debate was between the two Year 7 teams was hard fought on the topic that 'All secondary schools should be co-educational'. This was the first debate for our new Year 7 team who have been working hard on perfecting their skills in the Masters Academy workshops. After some hotly contested points, the debate was won by Pittwater High School. Congratulations to all students on a brilliant day. Thank you to Pittwater High School for coming and competing at our school. Daniel Moller English Teacher Learning & Support Coordinator
