Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson HSC Trial Examinations Year 12 have moved one step closer to their HSC exams after completing the first week of their trials. The trials will continue into next week. The marks students obtain in their trials will form a significant component of their school based assessment mark. The school based assessment mark contributes 50% of the final HSC mark in most courses. In many cases, the trial exams are the most realistic experi- ence students will have of the HSC exams later in the year. In keeping with the HSC experience the trial exams provide students, the opportunity to be guided by the same exam invigilators who will supervise students during their HSC exams later this year. We wish Year 12 all the best for the final week of their trial exams. Year 9 Camp On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week normal classes for Year 9 were suspended to make way for the annual ski camp. The first day the group travelled to the snow via Canberra. The stop over in Canberra was for most of the day with visits to many of our national capital s highlights including the War Memorial and Parliament House. By the end of the first day the group had arrived in Berridale, their base for the next two days for their visit to the snow. They were lucky to have it actually snowing while they were there, although they did have to cope with some very cold weather. Not all of Year 9 travelled to the snow. A group of approximately 25 students remained at school and followed an excit- ing and innovative school based program. On Wednesday it was all about Art. Following an art workshop at school, the group made their way to the city to visit the Art Gallery and see the Archibald exhibition. On Thursday it was all about food. Following a food based science lesson, students participated in a hospitality class and prepared their own lunch. On Friday it was literature. The students had a lesson on Hamlet that focused on the parallels between Hamlet and Disneys The Lion King. I am not sure how many of the students knew that The Lion King was based on Hamlet! Fol- lowing this, the group travelled to the cinema at Hornsby to watch the latest Lion King movie. What great experiences! Thanks go to Mrs Bodley for organising both the ski and alternative camp. Thanks also to Ms Paterson for her support organising the ski camp and to all of the teachers who helped supervise. High AchieversMorning Tea The high achieving students from Years 7 to 10 from Semester 1 were invited to a morning tea on Monday this week. To receive an invitation, a student had to be in the top 10 achievers in their year group. Students were selected based upon their performance across all of their subjects. Thanks go to Mrs Gettens for organising the morning tea. Congratu- lations to the following students who were invited to the morning tea; Year 10: Youjin L, Nina K, Jessica B, Kirsten F, Keetan S, Philippa R, Taffany M-H, Mai M, Matthew V, Suane B Year 9: Gemma L-S, Alice R, Isabella B, Hana J, Ethan R, Zoe T, Emily D, Aryan M, Hayley G Year 8: William S, Aden Z, Vania Z, Chanel C, Jessica W, Zack R, Jasmin L, Sophie H, Frida B, Mia S Year 7: Zoe J, Naomi S, Nate R, Lily R, Caitlin H, Olivia M, Jessica O, Aeryn O, Carolyn T Term 3 Week 3 9 August 2019

Duke Of Edinburgh BBQ A group of students are working their way towards the gold Duke of Edinburgh award. To receive the award, a student must undertake a number of challenges, each of which is more substantial to the challenges for bronze and silver awards. One of these is an adventurous journey. Our group is planning to undertake their adventurous journey as a walk in Tasma-nia later this year. On Monday this week the group held a lunch time barbeque to raise funds for their Tassie adventure. Thanks go to Mrs Paterson for organising the barbeque and the Tasmanian expedition.

Congratulations Nina Congratulations to Nina K, Year 10. Nina recently took part in the Mathematics Challenge quiz receiving a High Distinction in the Maths Challenge for Young Australians. Nina was a certainty for a High Distinction since she achieved a perfect score in the quiz. Building Update Over the school holidays, temporary fencing was placed around the site for the stadium development and the C-Block refurbishment. As a result, we have made some adjustments to the use of the playground. The grassed area in front of the canteen on the Horace Street side of the school has been opened to all students as a passive area. The basketball hoops from the old outdoor courts have been relocated to the quad for student use. Building work has begun on the re-furbishment of C-Block over the school holidays. The first stage of the works has been demolition work. These photos show the work during week 2 of this term. The next stage will be the construction of the new and renewed teaching spaces. Work will begin on the stadium when all Council approvals are in place. It is anticipated that these are only weeks away. In the meantime, design planning and pre-commencement meetings have taken place.

P&C Fund Raising – My Community Project If you live in the Davidson electorate, please remember to vote for the P&C’s proposal to fund an upgrade of the facilities in the school hall. If we are successful with the application, we would have funds available to improve the sound and lighting in the hall and to add to the hall’s facilities with items such as temporary stage equipment. These additions would improve the versatility of our facilities and be suitable for all types of performance and presentations. See the flyer in this newsletter with details on how to vote. Voting closes on August 15, so time is running out. Best wishes Mark Watson Principal

NSW STATE WIND BAND

Last week Luke B represented St Ives High School as a Percussionist for the NSW State Junior Wind Band in the incredible 2019 Festival of Instrumental Music. The Festival was presented by the NSW Department of Education Arts Unit at the prestigious Sydney Opera House. Luke played in the Jacaranda Concert on Wednes-day 31 July 2019 and the Mimosa Concert on Thursday 1 August 2019. Luke was honoured to have been selected and he thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of represent-ing his school.

DRAWING CLASSES This week was our first week of drawing classes. Students from years 7, 10 and 11 joined for 2 hours of drawing... such bliss! Emma, our dance model kept the students engaged with some interesting poses, even challenging the students to draw her as she danced! Utilising a range of media the students worked from quick warm sketches through to sustained 20-minute poses. The group will meet again over the next two weeks and a selection of their work will be exhibited in the Art Exhibition in week 7. Tania McGurgan Visual Arts Teacher

YEARS 7X AND 7T VISIT THE TANKEN CENTRE Students of 7X and 7T who are learning Japanese got a wonderful opportunity to experience Japanese culture and food with two native Japanese teachers at the Tanken Centre in Kirrawee. Removing shoes and wearing slippers indoors, sitting on zabuton on the tatami mats were some of the first time experiences for the students. With games and various activities, they explored the interior of a typical Japanese house, used Japanese numbers to solve basic math problems, used their knowledge of Hiragana to spot the characters on a board. The students had fun shaping the rice into trian-gles to make onigiri and enjoyed Japanese food in a traditional obento at lunch-time. The highlight of the day was dress-ing up and posing for a photo shoot in their teams. Students were awarded certificates as a souvenir of the day. The students gave the excursion a huge ‘thumbs up’ and were very excited at the end of the day. Ms Khush Patel and Ms Lyndel Champion

ARCHIBALD PRIZE VISIT This week, 26 year 9 students have engaged in an alternative program while their peers have travelled to Canberra and the NSW Ski Fields. On Wednesday, their day began with a lesson from Ms Gettens on the Archibald Prize. Ms Doherty and Ms Cartwright then accompanied the students to the NSW Art Gallery to view finalists for 2019. The students were highly engaged in viewing the artworks, marvelling at the techniques used by the artists to capture their subjects so strik-ingly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and we were particularly proud that a member of the public wrote a lovely email complementing our students on their mature and pleasant demeanour.
