Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson Year 12s Final Week This week was the final week of classes for the class of 2019. When they return next term, it will be to sit their HSC exams. On Monday and Tuesday, Year 12 attended their final lessons as school students. It was a great opportunity for teachers and students to thank each other and say goodbye. Normal classes were held for the first three lessons each day with special activities for the remainder of the day. On Monday the students had a presentation on safe partying from Red Frogs. On Tuesday there was a car washing fundraiser and a Year 12 vs Staff game of Oztag, the staff being too good for the students! Year 12 Formal The Year 12 Formal was held on Wednesday night at Lauriston House in Dundas Valley. This year it was a St Ives High School only event with invitations to students who joined the year group from 2014 onwards. The Lauriston House venue was perfect, it was the right size, we were able to move to the gardens for a change of scene and there was a wonderful view of the lights of Parramatta. Year 12 Graduation On Thursday evening Year 12 gathered again, this time at school with their families for the Graduation ceremony. The format for the evening followed that of recent years with finger food prepared and served by our Year 11 Hospitality students. Every student in Year 12 was presented with a certificate during the formal graduation assembly. The occasional ad- dress was given by Sam Collett, one of the school captains from 2014 when Year 12 were in Year 7. Chloe Williams and Isobel Norris performed musical interludes. Isobel was a soloist with the Jazz Combo. The formal ceremony was followed by a supper, which included the Year 12 cake. A Big Thank You To All Involved With Year 12 The entire week of celebrations for Year 12 would not have been possible without the support of a number of people. Thanks go to Ms Lovell, Year 12s Advisor, for all of her planning for the week. Not only was she involved in every aspect of the week, her planning for the formal, with the support of her committee of Year 12 students, had been working on the formal for some years. Thanks to Mrs Doherty and her Year 11 Hospitality stu- dents for catering for the Graduation. Thanks also to Ms Morante for her meticulous planning of the graduation assembly. Thanks also to Mr Lawler for all of his support for the week and to all of the staff who participated. The graduation would not have been possible without the P&C. Thanks to all of our parent volunteers. A special thank you to the P&C graduation committee, Mrs Habibi, Mrs Cameron, Mrs Paul and Mr Parsanejad. Year 12 Survey The school and the P&C will conduct a survey of Year 12 parents to gain feedback about this week s activities, Year 12 and overall school performance. The survey is scheduled to go out on Friday 27 th after 1pm. Please take the time to complete the survey, your feedback is most welcomed. You will receive an individual email inviting you to complete the survey. If you cannot see the invitation, check your spam/junk mail folder in case it has been moved there. You will receive a reminder Friday next week to complete the survey. We intend to close the survey Thursday 10 October, however, this will depend upon the response rate. HSC Holiday classes There will be much activity at the school over the holidays. During Term 4 we will hold our biannual musical Matilda. The holidays will provide a wonderful opportunity for lots of rehearsals. There will also be much activity with holiday classes being held for Year 12. A table of dates and activities has been emailed to Year 12. We encourage students to attend these if they are studying the course. Thanks go to the parents and staff who will be on duty over the holidays. P&C Musical Grant Success Great news! We've been successful with a Ku-ring-gai Council grant of $5,000 to support the school musical. Council met on 17 September and this week we received confirmation that the grant was successful. We are thrilled to receive this grant! Thanks to all the parents involved with the application. NAPLAN Update We received NAPLAN results for Years 7 and 9 last week and these were distributed to students last Friday to take home. By now you should have received your child’s NAPLAN results. If you have not, you should check their school bag. If you do not have a copy, contact the office. Building Update Work on C-Block is progressing at a rapid pace. It is intended to have it finished by the end of the year so that teachers can move their classes back into C-Block. This week additional fencing was placed along side the demountables in readiness for the arrival of additional demountables for the IEC. We do not have a specific date set aside for their delivery.

Term 4 This is a reminder that Term 4 will begin on Monday 14 October. There is not a school development day at the start of Term 4 so students and teachers will start on the same day with normal classes. Congratulations This week congratulations to:

Adam L (Year 8). Adam recently won the Gold Medal at the regional Brazilian Ju-Jitsu tournament. Adam clinched the Gold with a 12-0 and submission of his opponents.

All the students who took part in the RAISE Mentoring program and graduated this week (see news item elsewhere in this newsletter.)

All the students who took part in the Drumbeat program. They learned how to express their mood and feelings through the beating of a drum.

Best Wishes Mark Watson Principal

CAREERS UPDATES YEAR 10 Work Experience Reminder With the holidays fast approaching it will be a good opportunity to source a work experience employer and have the work experience forms signed. Work Experience is held during term 4 week 8 from 2-6 December 2019 and is compulsory for all year 10. There are no classes that week as this week has been set aside so students can experience the world of work, test a possible future career or gain some important skills, which may lead to a casual job. Signed forms are due back to me on or before 15 November so that I have time to enter the details into the database and allocate teachers to supervise students during the week. Students are wel-come to look over my list of work experience contacts from previous years.
