Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson Congratulations St Ives High School! We did it! We have successfully obtained a My Community Project grant for $200,000 for our Revitalising Our Hallapplication. The money will allow us to upgrade the hall, in particular the sound and lighting used for performances. Modifications to the sound and lighting mixing desks will hopefully provide us with flexibility that will allow us to seat more people; a benefit to all users of our hall. It truly has been a community project. Winning applications were determined by the number of votes received for the project from residents of the Davidson electorate. A big thank you to everyone who got behind our application and voted for it. Thanks go to the P&C who have driven the application. They identified the grant, wrote the application and promoted it in the community. We are grateful for everyones support. Senior School Leaders for 2020 Last week candidates for the positions for Senior School Leaders were finalised with speeches and voting from Year 11 and staff. There were 17 candidates for 8 positions. The candidature was strong and all should be proud of their efforts. 2020 Senior Leaders are: School Captains: Emmanuel N & Georgina F School Vice Captains: Alexander L & Nikki P SRC Executive: Chiara B, Elliana S-G, Roy H & Gavin R HSC Update We are currently in a very busy period for Year 12 students, especially for those with major works, oral exams and per- formance exams. These are all due, or held at this time before the HSC written exams in Term 4. Over 20 of our lan- guage students have sat their oral exams over recent weekends. Major works from Industrial Technology Timber stu- dents were marked last weekend. Last weeks Music Soiree (pictures in last weeks newsletter) show-cased the perfor- mance pieces from our HSC candidates. These will be performed for, and marked by the HSC examiners next week. Art works have been submitted for marking and have been on display (see below) at the art exhibition this week prior to marking. Art Exhibition An amazing display of student artwork was exhibited in the hall this week. Our annual art exhibition showcases the depth of artistic talent of our students to the community. Works exhibited included the Year 12 major art works for the HSC and there were many positive comments about these from visitors to the exhibition. Another exciting aspect to the exhibition was the huge variety of works reflecting the different visual art courses offered by the Creative and Performing Arts KLA. The tre- mendous development in maturity and style from Year 7 to Year 12 was obvious from the works on display. The exhibition ran for three days with Tuesday evening focusing on the Year 12 works and Thursday evening a night for Year 7. Thanks go to the dedicated art teachers Ms Gettens, Miss McGurgan, Mrs Melville and Mrs Skilton for the exhibition and their wonderful work with students. Industrial Technology Timber HSC Marking Last Saturday a team of HSC markers from NESA arrived at school to mark the Industrial Technology Timber major works. A huge variety of works were assembled for the markers including pieces from furniture to toys and musical in- struments. Congratulations to all of the students and thanks to their teacher Mr Hunt. Year 7 Survey Another great initiative of the P&C has been our parent surveys. The data collected allows us to review our programs, continuing to do what we know works and modifying what needs adjusting. The number of years the surveys have been conducted now gives us some longitudinal data against which we can measure our performance. The response rate for this years Year 7 survey is just over 50%. Links to the survey have been emailed to parents including a reminder on Tuesday this week. The Survey will close on Saturday at 5pm, so if you are a Year 7 parent reading this before then, please complete the survey to push our response rate even higher. Term 3 Week 7 6 September 2019

Timber major works and their portfolios were marked last Saturday by Board of Studies HSC markers. Our year 12 stu-dents, under the guidance of Mr Hunt, have worked consistently over the last 4 terms on their major works and should be proud of the results.

ART EXHIBITION WRAP UP

This week highlighted the importance of Visual Arts at St Ives High. The school hall was transformed, over 3 days, to a large gallery space to hold over 2000 items of art!! From the fun thong installation from Year 7 which made up of over 200 pieces, to the sophisticated year 12 HSC works, there was much to admire no matter what your taste or level of interest in Visual Arts. Year 12 were the VIP guests at a special early session on Tuesday evening. Their teacher Mrs Melville gave all her students an "Art pack" to remember their time in her class. Many students, parents and friends, past and present, came to visit. Years 9 and 10 Visual Arts classes were very well represented from Still Life to Landscape and Portraits, to the more abstract concepts developed by Year 11. Elective works included visual design objects such as Game of Thrones costumes, to kites, puppets, shoes, bowls and more. Slick photographs and quirky videos could be seen from the Photomedia elective classes. A popular Year 8 course is Illustration with some wonderful drawings from our Year 8 classes. The mandatory classes in Year 7 and 8 offered so many experiences from spray painting street art to whimsical machine drawing bugs. The highlight for Year 7 was a special night on Thursday to announce the Archies winners. There were so many great entries a number of awards were given: First Overall winner: Lazar R Second place: Kenny C Third place: Nate R Further prizes were given for Highly commended works, a P& C award and a Principal's award and an award to the work most popular with staff. An extra award was given to the best piece of journalism where students were asked to write a report as if it were to be considered for publishing in an exhibition catalogue. Carolyn T was the overall winner but many other students also submitted great pieces of writing. Excerpts from students art writing: Carolyn T: As soon as I walked into the exhibition I was immediately wowed by the year 7 Archies. Looking at all the perspectives of our teachers was very entertaining and enjoyable, it was one of my favourite exhibits."Meltdown" by Kate F was an amazing piece of year 12 art.Not only was it extremely detailed and lifelike, it conveyed a message to us, showing the effects of global warming and how we have to take e consequences of our decisions. Annabel C : “The face of the City” by Caitlin S is unquestionably a work of art that you must lay your eyes on! The glis-tening street lights to the reflection off the car lights onto the road and the glimmering of the city makes you feel at home and gives you that delightful sense of reality, and the imagery so vivid that you could almost smell the rain and hear the sound of a busy road, makes you so happy inside and then you just want to take the painting and run, but then again, you have to raid the cheese platter first, then you can run.
