Visits Service &Teacher programme changes

• The Visits Service has recently been merged with the Teacher Programmes into a new section (headed by Mick Storr [email protected]) in the education group which moved to PH.

• At all levels there is nowadays awareness of the importance of high school visits.

• Access to the underground installations will soon be impossible. Alternatives have to be found which is a real challenge !! ( BUT Permanent Globe exhibition, ATLAS AVC, Delphi, superconductivity, computing,....)

“Study”-visitors top 4 by country

• 1) Italy 27%• 2) Switzerland 14%• 3) France 13%, Germany 13%• 4) UK 10%

• Holland 2%, Spain 2%, Finland 2%• Norway, Sweden 0.2%• REMARKS:• Numbers somewhat uncertain as there are also (school)visits

not organized by the visit service• Constraints vary with distance !!• My personal impression is that virtually without exception the

visits are highly appreciated (evaluation?)

Goals

• Find ways to accommodate more visitors, create enticing tours of CERN highlights

• Make the permanent Globe exhibition into a success (starting 1 January 2010)

• So that people leave CERN well informed, inspired, curious to know more, and act as ambassadors for CERN after going home

Summary

• Invite Mick Storr for a discussion• There is support at all levels• To go down in an underground area is really

the highlight (DELPHI??)• Organize CERN open day during 2010-2011

shutdown???• Need of more guide, in particular young

guides from LHC experiments
