The federal government’s estimate of poverty/food insecurity within America has

been increasing over the years, various studies by non-governmental organizations and

academics have established significant rates of increase in poverty.

An example is the Urban Institute’s National Survey of America’s Families which found that “half of all families at 200 percent of poverty

and below had concerns with food shortages or difficulty obtaining food.”
