The botanical gardens are divided according to the energy gained from the 24 hour cycle of day and night.

There is a division between plants which bloom at daybreak and those which open at sundown. The separation of the day

and night pleasure gardens is achieved using the canal filled with reed grasses which generate electrical energy for the building.

DIURNAL GARDENThe diurnal garden is divided into two layers influenced by the 24 hour cycle of the day. Firstly, there is a division between plants which bloom during the daytime and those which bloom during the night, creating moments of overwhelming nyctinastic movement at sunrise and sunset. Secondly, there is the separation of a pleasure garden of night and day blooming plants, from species which generate electrical energy from photosynthesis. This clear split of spectators and research demonstrates that the continuous steam of visitors and energy generation that is linked to the cycle of day and night.

This point marks the area where the density of the reeds is the greatest, and thus denotes the source of the majority of electrcity generated from the reeds. The flowers are planted according to the time that they bloom, so that a slow promenade around the ramped path throughout the day will allow a visitor to see the movement of the flora greeting them along the path.

EVOLUTION OF THE FORM

10

30˚

The form of the garden is created by spanning the canal diagonally between two solid masses which serve as the greenhouses. A massive skylight is carved out of both shapes to provide adequate light for the plants within, and a spacious ramp circles the boundary of the greenhouse to serve as the main circulation for visitors. This ramp leads from the daytime garden through a mirrored bridge over the reeds and into the night garden, creating a passage between aesthetic and utilitarian plants. The energy generated by the reeds is distributed between the interior and exterior night/day gardens. The plants are arranged in a series of triangular plots fanning out from a central node in the middle of the canal.

Situated on a busy street corner, the hotel offers a spa experience like none other. Clients are whisked

off to an Icelandic retreat surrounded by the serene atmosphere of Japanese-inspired architecture. The heated

pools are scattered in a faceted landscape that extends to an exterior terrace, allowing for a soothing dip even during the middle of

a snowy winter.

The entrance of the hotel is angled towards the intersection of two main roads, inviting visitors from every direction. The glass front façade of the hotel allows the restaurant within to have a vibrant street presence, and glows like a beacon in the night time. Above the restaurant is a private garden accessible by the second floor spa and onsen. The rooms are grouped in the rectilinear tower, which has a corner beveled to create two communal garden areas on the top two floors for the patrons.

DEVELOPMENT OF ONSEN LANDSCAPE

INTERIOR VIEW OF ONSEN

The onsen pools were inspired by the terraced form of rice paddies and natural hot springs in Iceland. Taking a regular gride of 12 squares, the surfaces of a few sections were first pushed up to random heights before being depressed into shallow pools. The remaining surfaces were landscaped with abstractly geometric versions of rolling hills to simulate the environment of a natural spring.

A few of these pools are situated on the exterior terrace, where the temperature of the hot water heats up the exterior patio enough for people to enjoy a hot dip even with the cold Ontario winter climate.

NUMÉRO DE CHAQUE ÉTAGE : METHOD 1

I was given responsibility in the visualization of spaces, design of interior architecture, research and meetings with suppliers, layout for project publication, and wayfinding design. Projects in which I was involved include the opera house at Granada, the culture centre at Besançon, museum competition for poet Rimbaud, and various other projects in Paris and Chamonix.

GRANADA - VIP LOUNGE BALCONY22

In the VIP lounge overlooking the main lobby area of the Granada opera house, I designed the partition that separates the interior seating area and exterior balcony. Wooden slats are used to create the wall, with shorter lengths sliding into the gaps between to form narrow shelves for the self-service bar and bar tables for people to rest their drinks on the balcony. On the other side, a low bench completes the bottom half of the partition. A wayfinding system incorporating the handrail was also designed to direct visitors to the appropriate section of the auditorium.

FINAL DESIGN FOR TABLES - CHOSEN BY CLIENT

EXPERIMENTATION WITH MATERIALITY

A residential tower in Repulse Bay was aiming to renovate the interior and image branding of their restaurant. One of the points of interest was a pair of custom tables and benches in the center of the dining area. I was given free reign to experiment with the form and appearance of these tables as long as they were constructed of wood and steel. There were various proposals for the design of the legs, but the final chosen design was two angled tables with delicate steel legs.

PRESENTATION FORMAT FOR BRANDING PROPOSAL

The restaurant asked the firm to create a new image and logo after changing the name to Breakers. The interior of the restaruant was designed as casual chic, and the client wanted the branding to reflect this same tone. Using a series of logo proposals, a set of take-away cups and in-house dishes and cutlery were designed.

FINAL LAYOUT FOR APP

29

Each residential unit at the De Ricou tower in Repulse Bay was designed to have the lighting, heating/cooling, and environmental system controlled with an interactive app on the iPad. I created a layout for each utility using the blue scheme of the residential branding and designed easily-recognizable icons for the individual function. Upon request by the manufacturer of the app, the icons were converted into a font to facilitate the insertion of the icons as workable buttons.

The Stingray Observatory is an extension of the New York Aquarium for a view of Brooklyn’s local sea life.

The building’s name refers to its mimicry of the stingray’s physique and elegant movement in the shallow waters. The

stingray’s barbed tail is represented by the sweeping entrance way leading from the grassy dock to the underground observatory

which creates a beautiful connection between land and sea. The Stingray Observatory reinvents the oldest operating aquarium in the world

to properly represent the vibrance of the city.
