A mixed use development that resides on the site of the former Central Police and Fire Station in Nottingham and is a part of the Nottingham City Centre Regeneration. It comprises a public, comic book themed café, office space and meeting and conference facilities, complementing the existing conference centre in the NTU Newton Building.

ATRIUM STRUCTURE DETAIL – PLAN VIEW

1.Kawneer AA100 Double Glazed Curtain Wall System welded to a Rectangular Hollow Section beam.

2. 1320mm high Steel Warren Truss composed of 120mm Square Hollow Sections as top and bottom chords and 100mm diameter round bars as its webs. They connect to the columns forming the primary structure of the atrium.

3. 90x50mm Steel Rectangular Hollow Section beams welded to the columns that act as secondary structure, holding the curtain wall in place.

4. 300mm Square Hollow Section column.

5. 120mm Square Hollow Section beams that act as diagonal bracing between the columns and the Warren Trusses as part of the secondary structure of the atrium.

6. 300mm Circular Centre Support Anchor, holding the diagonal bracing together and supporting the suspended lights in the atrium.

Elevations were created in AutoCAD following a measured survey. Some of the elements, such as the height of the roof and chimneys, are only indicative, as measuring them was not possible at the time.

Arboretum Visitor Centre Welcome Sign 7. Two 4800x3600mm disabled parking spaces. 8. Anti slip disabled access ramp 9. One way driveway for bin collection and resupplying the shop. 10. Benches provide outside sitting for sunny days. 11. Solar panels, fitted on the side of the building with most sun exposure, in order to reduce electricity costs. 12. Connection to city services. Water pipes and electricity wires are underground. 13. Sorting bins spread around the building to encourage recycling. Note: CCTV surveillance provides extra security.

A single-storey, timber-framed building, comprising a café, a small shop, display space and a multi-use room, used for teaching, among other activities. The project was based on initial feasibility ideas that were already discussed with the owners and the local planning officer. Before the design was started, a survey of the site was carried out in small groups, to determine the slope of the area and to design the building accordingly.

In case of a fire, the internal wall spans to the roof, preventing the spread of fire. The primary structure is coated with fire retardant paint, increasing protection in high temperatures. The building is fitted with windows between the two different roof levels to allow more natural light into the space
