Speaker, Subject, Theme, and Tone is annotated for and written out at the top of bottom of the poem. Critical approaches are addressed in notes to the side.

Annotations show an understanding of Focus and Organization of the poem. What is the focus and relationship of the lines, stanzas (consider quatrains, couplets, etc.). Notes reflect an understanding of shifts of focus and shifts in tone. What is the form (sonnet? haiku? concrete?) How does the poet maintain unity? Note transitions. Blank verse? Enjambment?

Sensory Details­ annotate for imagery and sound devices to include alliteration, consonance, assonance, meter, rhyme scheme, and their impact on meaning.

Author’s Craft­ annotate for recurring motifs, contrasts, figurative language, oxymorons, symbols, allegory, pathos, ethos, logos, point of view of the speaker
