A QUICK ANSWER I

The Spring 1991 issue of our newsletter carried a brief request for further identification of Corporal Kevin Tingle, U.S. Marine Corps. His picture was flashed last February on national television while serving in the Persian Gulf War. Dan Rather'. Evening News featured it.

A quick response came from Mr. Dan W. Tingle of Lawrenceburg, Tenn. Kevin is his grand-nephew. Hr. Tingle provided the following information:

Kevin Scott Tingle, h. 6 Aug. 1964, Bon of Thea V. and Crystal Tingle of Leesburg, Florida (father) Thea Virgil Tingle, b. 2 Nov. 1940, Bon of Rev. Harold T. and Jo Sutton Tingle of Lawrenceburg, Tenn. Cgr.father) Rev. Harold Theodore Tingle, b. 11 May 1913. d. 11 Apr. 1990, 80n of William M. and Hattie Denson Tingle of Cullman, Alabama. (g.gr.father) William Marion Tingle, b. 3 June 1884, d. 28 Hay 1960, son of George W. and Margaret A. Livingston Tingle of Cullman County, Alabama. (g.g.gr. father) George Washington Tingle, b. 18 July l8S3, d. 10 Oct. 1936, son of Jesse Franklin and Clara Breeden Tingle of Cadsen, Alabama. .

Dan W. Tingle, whose full name is Daniel Washington Tingle, b. 9 Sept. 1925, is a half brother of the late Rev. Harold Theodore Tingle. Dan points out that the family moved to Tennessee from Alabama in 1917. He credits Mrs. Marie Tingle Young of Lawrenceburg. Tenn., Mrs. Joyce Cannon Tingle-White of Columbia, Tenn. and Mr. Richard W. Tingle of Huntsville, Alabama for the information compiled above • .

This short article would not be complete without an acknowledgement to Joyce White. She first sent me Tingle information way back in 1975 and in 1987 she prepared family charts. Several are reproduced in this issue. including that of William Marion Tingle, father of the above Dan W. Also chart for Gecrge Washington Tingle. father of William Marion. And .this takes us back to Jesse Franklin Tingle. father of George W. where ', '*" researchers seem to be 'stuck.' Can any of our readers carry the chain further back? Hr. Richard W. Tingle of Huntsville. Alsbama prOVided charts which were reproduced in Vol. 3 - No.2, pp. 11-17 of this newsletter.

We are appreciative of Mr . Dan Tingle's prompt and enlightening letter. By golly, the "Tingle Descendants" newsletter is being readl Keep up the good work. all you faithful correspondents.

Mrs. Sarah T. Everding of Kensington, Maryland. Associate Editor of the Newsletter. has written an interesting story about her uncle which our readers should enjoy

LT. COLONEL CLARENCE HERBERT TINGLE Quintessential Man of Ris Time

My branch of the Tingle descendancy from h1Ji;h Tingle to the present has hac a few flamboyant members, not the least of which was my m.cle, Lt. Colonel Clarence Herbert Tingle, my father's older brother and fmily favorite

llD1til his strange death in

February 1938. A newspaper article copied below in tne OUCAOO lRIBtJ·IE (February 22, 1938) was, of course, based LtJon a coroner's JUT)" decision undoubtedly influenced by U. S. Army opinions of felloW officers, but no family member or friend ever believed it to be a true verdict -- too many conflicting events obvious in the article, and Uncle Herb's personality and his love of life could not have permitted his suicide. Also, his popularity while serving in the anny might well have been a factor for other than the printed word as follows.

Ihlcle Herb was an outstandingly handsome young man, impressive in later years, and he 1>:8S very popular with the ladies. In fact. my Grandmother Tingle 1..aS quite dismayed when she caught him kissing her maid in the kitchen. wilo c.lmsed him afteni3rCs \'.rith 8 knife, and was dismissed fortlMith, so the story goes. Later, "'hen he selYed with General[buglas MacArthur in the Philippines (two tours in the 1920s) Aunt ~~rina felt the General was not such a good "social" influence. And, before he joined the Navy (prior to the Spanish-American war of 1898) he was much in love with a young lady of RerUn. Maryland, Belle l'Ihaley Keas. (years later she became 1iI)' Godmother) but their romance suddenly cooled, and he went to sea. She married Mr. Keas. Why? In those days, everything was sacrosanct.

Other events roved along ver), well for him, however. There were malty persons aboard, but through his guidance and skill the ship and all aboard were safely brought to shore. His second act of heroism was saving the lives of four men on a barge in a gale when he laWlched 8 rowboat frau. the SI.OClJ.t to effect their rescue when a tidal wave almost capsized the unwieldy barge (losing all supplies) and nearly swept away everyone. This time, my mete volunteered a crew of nen for his assistance who rowed a distance of twenty miles to shore in the alJoost tmbearable hot tropical sun for help. A Navy tug, \.trAS, finally rescued the rowboat, and these valorous feats led to the Silver Medal of Honor many years later through the intervention of his wife and same friends, as he wuld never ask for such recognition himself. A TINGLE DESCENDANT IN KOREA!

A new reader of the newsletter is Chief Warrant Officer Robert '- Alan Scott, who has been in the U.S. Army for 23 years and is presently

stationed in Korea.

He is a direct descendant of Ananias R. Tingle, born in Sussex County. Delaware on 13 March 1797. CW4 Scott has done extensive research on TINGLE, McCABE. SCOTT and related families of the Delmarva Peninsula. He haa committed his records to computer technology with amazing clarity and was kind enough to transmit 29 pages to your editor. Eight are reproduced in this issue on what he called hie "Name Sorted List,"

Note that this list included some 375 names which are spread among 62 different surnames. Future issues will carry his "Descendancy Charts, " "Family Group Records" and "Generation Charts." You will note TINGLE names (and many others) identified in pencil with the letter 'R' and a number. This is your editor's alpha-numeric system - he is too old to grapple with today's technology. But - he does marvel at the vast amount of detail that is produced with the flick of a button. *

Robert A. Scott's letter of 18 April 1991 contains some interesting stories about Tingles in Sussex County. Delaware. and the general ares. We are pleased to reproduce part of it in this issue. Remember that this region was in dispute for decades between the heirs of William Penn and the Calvert Family (the Lords Baltimore). It was finally decided when the Mason and Dixon line was drawn in 1769 defining the boundaries of Delaware Maryland and Pennsylvania. A future issue of the newsletter will discuss Israel Tingle. Parthena Tingle. William and Elizabeth Derrickson Tingle, ancestors of Ananias R. Tingle.

*Please see separate article in this issue by CW4 Scott in which he d.escribes how computers are rapidly gaining in use for gene81o~ical research. Applying this technique to Tingle research by various intereste t readers can result in lightning transmission of data to the benefit of computer users.

.. J . Seeger Ker ns 830 West 40th Street Apartment 851 Baltimore. MD 21211

Dear Mr. Ker ns,

18 April 1991

I recently receive from Mrs. Willis several copies of the Llna~ Newsletter. I was surprised at how fast the response was to my enquiry. Please relay to Mrs. Willis my appreciation. I was wondering if I could get some missing back issues from you. The ones that seem to be missing are:

All of Volume 1 No.1. 2. and 3 of Volume 2 No.1. and 4 of Volume 3

I was surprised to see mention of my hometown, if you can call it a town, Omar, DE in one of the newsletters. The Delaware History textbook has only recently changed the description of it from -. small, inbred. backwoods community consisting of a few frame houses situated around a small country stor •• - Today, the store is gone, and the only Tingles that I know of in the immediate area are my aunt, Beatriee Hudson. who lives 1 mile south towards Roxana, Hr. John S. Tingle, who (if still alive) lives about 200 yards from the crossroads, and my family. We still own about BO acres 1 mile east of there. The mailing address for anyone there is RD. 1 or 2. Frankford, DE 19945.

An interesting fact about Omar is that Lord Baltimore, during his tenure, commissioned 8 surveyor to go to that site. which is almost the center of Baltimore Hundred to layoff a town to be called Baltimore in his honor. The surveyor failed in his task and returned to Lord Baltimore and said that the are. was unfit for human habitation. The -town- w •• called Baltimore as late as the 18605, because I have a map whfcn shows the ",i 11 pond and all landowners in the Hundred fro~ the 18608.

I will relate some of the Tingle history in Baltimore Hundred as related to me by my Aunt Bea. wno will be ee In August.

There was a John Tingl. In the 1900's who is .entloned in several histories as a noted blacksmith in the area of present day Bayard. He was a free black lIan. My great-grandfather .. Charles C. Tingle. was also a blacksmith at about the same time. This caused considerabie probiems for at least one of my uncles. when he started courting his wife to be. Her family forbade her to associate with a Tingle because of the mixed background. It finally was resolved with a visit fro", my great grandmother to the family to prove her husband's lineage. Supposedly, the John S. Tingle in Omar is one of the descendants of that John. There is also a John A. Tingla, again if he is still alive, in Frankford.

I have traced my Tingle familY roots back to Parthana Tingle who diad in 1799. There is a possibility that some of the information that Mrs. Willis sent me will connect me to an Israel Tingle whose sons. William and Luke, were mentioned in Ananias Robinson's will probated in 1787. William and Luke were included In Parthena's will as two of her sons. Pretheny Tingle was named as an aunt to Ananias Robinson. This could be the same woman. William Tingle was named as Executor in both wIlls and Ezekiel Williams was a witness to both. William Tingle (dIed 1808) had a son, Annanias R.(born 1797), who 101.8 my great grandfather. ey tha way. Tingle's must be a virile bunch. Annanias was 73 years old and married to a 38 year old in 1870 when his last son was born."

COMPUTERS AND GENEALOGY

Readers who have access to computer-type genealogy will be particularly interested in the information quoted below from CW4 Robert A. Scott. As the younger generations become more interested in their TINGLE heritage, they will find his suggestions both timely and helpful. Note that he invites correspondence from anyone interested.

It This letter is becoming longer thsn I intended. however there is one thing that I feel strongly about. I have noticed several different computer printouts used In lhe Newsletter for the pedigrees and group sheets. I have used Family Roots on my Apple lIE and recently purchased an 18H compatible. A friend gave me a copy of the Hormon's PAF program (P~rsonal Ancestral Fil~ and it is the best genealogical program thaE I have ever seen. It includes a communication program that easily transfers files between users with a modem. The cost (about $35) is less than 1/4 that of Family Roots, gives a lot more features, and is easier to use. One feature that is that it will give the relationship between any two individuals in the data base and will print ahnentafel numbers on pedigrees if desired. You can also. for example, enter all persons of the same surname In one locality with their pertinent data and then request an automatic match feature. This will search the data base for like names. and dates within a certain range and produce them side by side on same screen SO" that you can compare them to see if they are the same individual. If so, you can then merge the 2 records into one. The only drawback is that it requires an IBM compatible which, " since APple has abandoned the home user and with the exorbitant cost of Apple hardware. isn't that much of a minus.

The main thrust of my suggestion is that if all the Tingles are using the same program, then information can be swapped with the speed and cost of a 3 minute telephone call rather than the blinding speed of the Pony Express (e~cuse me, the Postal -Service-). "

As I said this letter is longer than I intended, but I wanted to send a check to help cover the costs of the newsletter. Mrs. Willis used up almost all I sent the last time on Just the one mailing. I am stationed in Korea at the present time. so all my research has to be done by mail and I would be glad to correspond with anyone who is working on the Tingles of Baltimore Hundred and northern Worcester County, MD. Also Bishops, Truitts, and McCabes -in the same area. I have extensive McCabe genealogy from that area back to 1727."
