JEDIDIAH TINGLE

Your editor is pleasantly surprised by the flow of literary talent which continul!:s to surfacl!: among Tingll!: dl!:Bcendants. Thl!: following articll!: by Mrs. Jack il!: Goldman of Watl!:rioo, Ontario. Canad a is a good example . It i s interesting. well written and clearly documented. She graciously gives credit to David P. Shaw of Reston. Virginia. as well as your I!:ditor. for several of her sources of information.

Jackie. a member of our nl!:wsletter staff, is a ' dl!:scl!:ruiant of Jedidiah and consequently of Hugh Tingll!: who emigrated to Maryland in 1669 . She spells Jedidiah's name with an "i" bl!:tween the " d " s. His name is spelled that way in bis will, although ma.uy later references use the letter "e" between the "d"s. Herewith her story:

In 1792 or 1793 Jedidiah and Elizabeth, along with the large Reeder family, settlad in Columbia, Hamilton County, Ohio. A letter, written i n

brothars: Tha-as Hubbell, who was brother-in-law, and William Harper, Jeremiah Brann. and Hr. Tingley (T1ngle) who had married daughters of the

Reeders." 7

On Hay 5, 1796 Jedidiah purchased 8 full section (640 acres) fran

Addendum Notes: by JO ANN R. RICE 199C

Jedediah Tingle was listed in the " PIONEERS OF INDIANA SOCIETY " book, as published by the INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. I sent a request to the Society of Pioneers, aSking for copies of the original application ... Mrs. Moudy, a Society staff member, found that Jedediah indeed lived and died in Ohio ; eventhough he purchased much land in Brookville, Indiana, and Shelbyville, IN. All land records show his residence as Ohio. The application for " PIONEER" membership, was sent by JESMA DALE BELLMARD, in 1963. Copies of those application records, are included at this time, as pp . A-E.

BRANCH OF THE EXTENDED TD"lGLE ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

FAMILY,*

Mrs. Joan K. Tingle of Valley Center. California. as well as several other readers, has made an excellent lugge.tion. She proposes that we publish in the newsletter the names &Dd addressel of our lublcribers and the name or names of the specific TINGLE family branch in which that subscriber il interested. AI your editor I am lomewnat hesitant in doing this without the consent of our readers, even though I think it i. a good idea. I should. add that there are several libraries, genealogical and historical societies On our mailing list. And it il certainly not the intent of the stall to expose our mailing list of one hundred subscribers to solicitation by other sources.

U anyone is opposed to this idea will they pleue write to me and give me their thoughts on the matter? For those who like the idea I alk that they drop me a post card with their na.me and address and the specific family branch of TINGLES in which they are res.arching. Thb list could . then be published in the next issue of TINGLE DESCENDANTS.

SOME TINGLES WHO SERVED IN THE WAR OF 1812

David P. Shaw of Reston, Va. has spent considerable time doing research at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. From microfilm (which is always difficult to read) he completed a list of names taken from indexes to the War of 1812. David says that this is not intended to be a complete listing of all TINGLES who served, but that it is a great way to start this type of research. More information is available by examining original documents connected to enlistments and/or persons. To prove military service, as well as to get details about the SOldier, more research has to be done.
