Course in Depth

What will I study?

The programme consists of four main elements:

• Academic Study at Masters Level - you willcomplete two 30-credit modules at Masters level.The first module provides academic andprofessional development through a focus onfundamental skills for teaching as well ascontemporary issues in primary education. Thesecond module will present you with anopportunity to identify and explore an aspect ofspecial interest within primary physical education.The assessment design of these modules allows youto follow your own developing professionalinterests and so individualise your initial teachereducation experience and your professional CV;

• Development of Professional Curriculum SubjectKnowledge - during the induction phase of theprogramme you will engage in university sessionswith experienced specialist tutors. You will developthe professional subject knowledge that forms theessential foundation of effective teaching andensures that children make progress and enjoylearning. You will explore the expectations of thenational curriculum for England and learn aboutappropriate approaches to teaching and learningfor each subject. Tutors will model aspects ofprimary classroom practice using practical teachingworkshops to build your confidence andenthusiasm for each national curriculum subject;

• Professional Practice Placements - you will spenda significant amount of time undertakingprofessional practice placements in key stages 1and 2 in schools and other educational settings.During these experiences you will continue toengage in academic studies through onlinecollaboration with your peers and university tutors;

• Physical Education Conferences - additionalphysical education conferences, sometimesscheduled at weekends, will provide an opportunityfor deeper study of aspects of primary physicaleducation, including international and historicalperspectives and research from the forefront of thesubject.

How will I study?

Your learning experience will include lectures, seminars,workshop sessions and tutorials delivered using a hybridblend of on-campus and online teaching. Independentstudy will be supported by materials provided throughthe virtual learning environment using a range of onlineteaching tools and applications. Your university-basedexperiences will be underpinned by reference to currentresearch.

You will spend a significant amount of time undertakingprofessional practice placements, normally in key stages1 and 2 in schools and other educational settings. Duringthese experiences you will have opportunities to observethe work of expert practitioners. You will reflect on anddiscuss this practice with those practitioners and yourtrained school-based mentor. As you take on increasingresponsibility for children’s learning and development,you will start by working with small groups under thedirection of the class teacher, sometimes with a studentteacher partner, and progress to planning for and workingwith the whole class for significant periods of time,managing the learning of every child.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment strategies will include presentations todifferent audiences, academic essays individually tailoredaround your own professional interests, and ongoing tasksubmission.

During professional practice your school-based mentorwill assess your development through reflectiveconversations, reviewing and discussing your planningand assessment records, observing your teaching, andgathering the perspectives of other adults and, of course,of the children who work with you.

In all cases, you will be given clear assessment guidance.The assessment criteria will be shared with you and youwill be given constructive feedback to help you to settargets and identify actions to help you make furtherprogress.

You will compile an electronic portfolio that bringstogether evidence to demonstrate your professionaldevelopment and your ability to meet the Teachers’Standards.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught in University and on professionalpractice in schools by a range of highly qualified andexperienced teachers and tutors who are dedicated toexcellence in primary education and who will model highquality practice to enable you to develop your ownteaching style.

You will be supported throughout your programme by apersonal academic tutor who will help you to manageyour workload, engage with your academic studies,

prepare for professional practice placements and secureyour first teaching post.

Modules

PGP4015: Leading Development and Change in the Primary School (Physical Education Specialist)(30 credits)Leading Development and Change in the Primary School (Physical Education Specialist) enables you to harness yourpassion for physical education to develop as an expert primary PE teacher. You will have the opportunity to tailor yourstudies around one specific aspect of the primary physical education curriculum. Working with specialist tutors, youwill develop extended subject knowledge and an evidence-based approach to learning, teaching, assessment andcurriculum design. You will also examine bias and political, historical and cultural contexts, developing the capacity tolead and manage change and to articulate and communicate your own vision for curriculum development withinphysical education.

PGP4110: Contemporary Issues in Primary Education (30 credits)Contemporary Issues in Primary Education raises your awareness of complex contemporary issues and the impactthey have on children's lives. The module recognises that children's educational experiences are subject to complexinfluential factors which have implications for social justice and achievement. These factors change over time, as newpriorities emerge to which schools and teachers are expected to respond, however the implications for schools andtheir communities are contextual. Individual children and individual communities deserve individual consideration.The module provides you with the opportunity to embrace this complexity and begin to develop the expertise tomanage complex issues in a systematic, informed and effective fashion. Building on the foundations of equity, justiceand social responsibility, you will develop a framework which will guide your understanding of contemporary issueswithin the primary education context and which will facilitate your ongoing professional learning and development inthe future.

Timetables

Timetables for your induction week are normally available in August prior to enrolment. You can expect to receiveyour timetable for the rest of the academic year during your induction week. While we make every effort to ensurethat timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

When you apply, you are expected to have:

• A commitment to, and understanding of, primaryeducation in general and primary physicaleducation in particular, demonstrating the personalattributes, values and motivation required to trainas a teacher;

• Suitable presentational qualities, including a goodstandard of written English.

Before the programme commences, you must have:

• A degree equivalent to UK first-class orsecond-class honours (2:2 or above). No specificsubjects are required;

• GCSEs at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (orequivalent) in English Language and Mathematics;

• GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (orequivalent) in Combined Science, Physics,Chemistry or Biology.

In addition, you will need A Level Physical Education (orequivalent) or be able to demonstrate a commitment tosport beyond the classroom, such as a recognised sportsaward or elite athlete status.

Please note, for the purposes of initial teacher training,level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications are notconsidered as equivalent to GCSE Grade C or Grade 4 inEnglish Language and Mathematics.

An academic reference is required for all students whohave graduated in the last five years. An interview and

subject knowledge tests form part of the selectionprocess.

English Language Requirements

International students require IELTS 6.5, with a score nolower than 6.0 in each individual component, or anequivalent English language qualification.

If your current level of English is half a band lower, eitheroverall or in one or two elements, you may want toconsider our Pre-Sessional English course.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Edge Hill University recognises learning gainedelsewhere, whether through academic credit andqualifications acquired from other relevant courses ofstudy or through recognition of an individual’sprofessional and employment experience (also referredto as 'experiential learning'). This may include credit orlearning undertaken at another university.

Previous learning that is recognised in this way may beused towards meeting the entry requirements for aprogramme and/or for exemption from part of aprogramme. What are my career prospects?

This PGCE is accredited by the Department forEducation. Successful completion of the programme willenable you to gain recommendation for Qualified TeacherStatus (QTS). You will be well placed to progress intoemployment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in aprimary school.

Our graduates obtain work in schools across the UK andabroad and we offer excellent support to help you gainyour first teaching post. You will have an ability to teachin key stage 1 or key stage 2 in primary schools, a strongknowledge of primary education, excellent physicaleducation subject knowledge and pedagogy, andoutstanding classroom skills, so that you meet and exceedthe national standards for Qualified Teacher Status.

You will also have a thorough understanding of how toteach the primary curriculum in creative ways that exciteand stimulate children whilst ensuring that they makegood progress. In addition, you will have a deepknowledge of primary physical education and be wellplaced to take a subject leadership role in school. Skills inmonitoring and managing your own development,together with an ability to reflect on alternativeapproaches to education, will help you to make informedchoices and aid your career progression.

Before the end of the programme, you will need tocomplete a Career Entry and Development Profile(CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between the PGCEand your induction year as an NQT. Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK student who will be joiningthis PGCE in academic year 2021/22, the tuition fee willbe £9,250 (subject to final Government approval). Tuitionfees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2021/22 are £13,500.Exemptions apply for EU students who have settled orpre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, aswell as Irish nationals, who may be eligible for the UKtuition fee rate.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this PGCE canapply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government tocover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrollingon the programme may also be eligible to apply foradditional funding to help with living costs.
