Fabric Architecture The BX400 provides 3 fabrics for interconnect of the server blade onboard NICs and mezzanine cards to Connection Blades and SAS/RAID switches.
The onboard NICs are supported by fabric 1 (Connection Blade1). The mezzanine card 1 is supported by fabric 2 providing one slot to configure
one Connection Blade. The mezzanine card 2 is supported by fabric 3 (CB3 plus CB4) providing two slots to configure one or two Connection
Blades (FC or GbE or SAS/RAID switch blade). Using both Connection Blade slots a switch redundancy is supported. It is possible to provide
Ethernet LAN channel redundancy between onboard NIC channels and mezzanine card 1 channels by configure in Connection Blade slots 1 and 2
corresponding GbE switches.
Floorstand Version For the BX400 Floorstand variant there are the following principles:
Reuse of the BX400 Rack chassis (90 left turned)
Easy mountable parts to collect a floorstand variant
Covering the left turned BX400 rack chassis with plates on both sides and on top
The bottom part carries the Rack chassis and takes the lockable casters
LCD module can be operated from outside even if the front door is locked
ID card can be used if the front door is locked
DVD drive and I/O ports of the Front-Side I/O module can be covered by the front door
All floorstand parts are collected to one kit for sales

Power Supply Modules The BX400 enclosure will be shipped with one power supplies, however up to four power supplies can be installed. The remaining PSU slots must
be completed by FAN only units. The design of the power supply modules is optimized to reduce the power dissipation over the entire load range
and is acoustically optimized.
The BX400 system works in 230V (EMEA) and 115V (USA, Japan) power environments. Two PSUs will support a fully populated BX400 system.
Required maximum DC power per PSU is 1600W. The high efficiency power supplies provide greater than 92% efficiency.
The following PSU redundancy modes are supported:
Phase redundancy: 1+1 (2xPSUs installed), 1+1+1 (3x PSU installed), 1+1+1+1 or 2+2 (4x PSU installed)
PSU redundancy: 1+1 (2xPSUs installed), 2+1 (3x PSU installed), 3+1 (4x PSU installed)
PSU non redundancy: 1x PSU installed, 2x PSU installed Case
For enclosure overall efficiency reasons the administrator may choose a Dynamic Mode where PSUs are started on a needed basis, only. Those
PSUs not being required for supplying the powered configuration will be kept in OFF state. MMB might need to power on additional PSUs before
being able to power on further CPU or connection blades. Powering down CPU or even connection blades might cause a Switch-OFF of PSUs.
The airflow design assures that cold air is available for the Server Blades as well as for the switch area. The switch area will get cold air via a
bypass on the left and right side of the BX400 System. The PSU includes the fans to cool the system. The fans inside the PSUs or FAN-Unit
maintain a low pressure zone located between the Blade flaps and the PSU.

PRIMERGY SX Storage Blades PRIMERGY SX Storage Blades are designed for installation into the PRIMERGY BX system units, together with the PRIMERGY Server Blades. The
introduction of Storage Blades Disk for all PRIMERGY Blade Servers offers an easy and cost effective server consolidation opportunity, i.e. for a
transition from rack or tower servers to high density blade server architecture. Usage of tape drive equipped storage blades offers an easy and
fast way to backup system data locally. It is often essential to have local access to large amounts of data where smaller workgroups locally have
to work on and create very large models. Operation within confined environments as file servers as well as for Microsoft SharePoint portals and
Microsoft SQL Servers are popular usage cases for disk-based storage blades.

Management Concept The Fujitsu PRIMERGY BX400 has extensive embedded management capabilities based on a general easy-to-use concept that also non IT
professionals are able to use the interfaces and functions.
Local Service Display & Base Configuration Wizard
ServerView Installation Manager
ServerView Dashboard
Power Consumption Management
LOCAL SERVICE DISPLAY & BASE CONFIGURATION WIZARD The Front-Side I/O Module provides several user and management interfaces at the front side of the BX400 chassis. It will be plugged into slot
nine of the enclosure and will provide USB and DVD functionality to the server blades, LAN and serial connectivity, buttons and LEDs and an
optional LCD for chassis management. The Local Service Display is an ever-ready, enclosure-mounted local service panel on the front. It is
controlled by the management blade and is used for local diagnostics and administration of the blade server. It is a quick and easy-to-use
information panel that allows to initially configuring the enclosure. It also provides information about the health and operation of the enclosure.
To start the BX400 enclosure there is no need for an installation. It is necessary to set some basic parameters (IP address, etc.) supported by a
corresponding simple wizard via LCD display or MMB GUI after power on. After the initial setting the enclosure is in operation mode. The Base
Configuration wizard should assist the user setting up a system unit when the system is powered up the first time. When the blade system is
powered up for the first time this means that the MMB has booted for the first time. The wizard guides you step by step through the menus, in
which you make the necessary settings (language, date/time, import settings, identification settings, network settings, power settings, PIN
protection, ekeying check and save/export for putting the blade server into operation.

ServerView Installation Manager (SVIM) Installation Manager is delivered as part of ServerView Suite. Within the ServerView Suite, ServerView Installation Manager (SVIM) represents the
component for configuring and installing operating systems and other user management and server management software. Additional to the
local and remote installation modes, SVIM supports a new installation mode: a mass rollout installation. The mass rollout makes it easy for the
customer to install a lot of server blades in a PRIMERGY BX400 by one task. It combines the advantages of the local installation and the mass
installation capacity of the remote installation.
Local installation
The user inserts the SVIM DVD to the DVD drive and boots the system. After SVIM has been booted, the SVIM WebUI gets started. In typical mode
or customized mode, the user selects the OS and sets system parameters, RAID and disk configuration and OS parameters.
Remote installation
If the BX400 is integrated to a network supporting DHCP mass rollout is possible with SVIM or SVDM running on the deployment server. The
configuration and definition of the deployment parameters is completely done on deployment server side by SVIM or SVDM WebUI. With the PXE
boot the remote installation is running completely unattended.
Local mass rollout
Alternative to the local and remote installation the MMB manages the installation in a mass rollout.
Use case 1:1(one individual configuration file for one server blade):
The user selects the server blade where the OS will be installed to.
The user selects the OS he wants to install and defines the input parameters.
The MMB asks the user to put the OS installation media into the USB-DVD drive. Then the MMB assigns the USB-Hub to the selected server
blade and makes sure, that the server boots from the USB stick.
The input parameters are sent to the iRMC of the selected server blade by MMB.
The server blade gets booted and SVIM starts the installation after creating the configuration file out of the OS related template and the input
parameter got from iRMC-API.
(Optional) An internal reboot (e.g after creating a RAID array) is required.
(Optional) A boot of 64bit WinPE is required (e.g. for installation of W2K8 DC).
SVIM sends the status to the iRMC, which signals, that the installation has been finished.
Use case 1:n (one configuration file for multiple server blades):
The user selects the server blades where the OS will be installed to.
The user selects the OS he wants to install and defines the input parameters. The OS and the input parameters are identical to each selected
server blade
The MMB starts the installation for server blade 1. See use case 1:1 step 1. - 8.
The MMB starts the installation for server blade 2
The support of the mass rollout requires a new installation mode in SVIM: The local installation with templates. There are two major aspects:
Each installation template is assigned to an OS, which is supported in this mode. The templates are files on the SVIM media.
The user can define input parameters, which are taken to modify the template by the local SVIM session.
After the OS has been selected by MMB session SVIM creates at local boot a configuration file from the template and the input parameters. If no
input parameters are defined, the configuration file is derived from the template only. SVIM runs the following installation with the created
configuration file. An installation template corresponds to a configuration file as created by the SVIM WebUI in typical mode.

Power Management The power management in the PRIMERGY BX400 environment can be differentiated into four main functions.
Power Consumption Monitoring
Chassis Power Consumption Control
Server Blade Power Consumption Control
PSU Redundancy Mode
Power Consumption Monitoring:
You can manage and display measurement data on power consumption for the PRIMERGY BX400 from a central management station. This is
done using the Power Monitor component of the Operations Manager. The Power Consumption Monitoring has been enhanced not only to show
the system power consumption but also the individual component power consumption. The power consumption monitor for the enclosure shows
both input power consumption and output power consumption.
The series of measurements can be displayed on the screen for evaluation in a table or, illustratively, in a graph. Using various parameters, you
can adjust the output in the table or graph to suit your needs, e.g.:
Display the power consumption over a certain period (e.g. an hour, a week, a year)
Display different kinds of consumption values (e.g. current and average) in a multiple-curve graph
A basic input and output power consumption monitor for the enclosure shall be displayed within the Dashboard.

Chassis Power Consumption Control:
Chassis power consumption control is mainly focused on controlling
the overall BX400 system power consumption behavior. To fulfill this
task, there are four possible modes which are implemented by the
MMB. Users are able to modify these modes in every possible MMB
interfaces.
None
Minimum Mode
Low Noise Mode
Enforced Mode
Minimum Mode
This setting means that all components should run in its minimal
performance. All possible power consumption saving will be initiated
by iRMC to ensure the lowest possible power consumption operating
mode.
Low Noise Mode
MMB will try to keep systems noise as low as possible (45dB) by
reducing server blade power consumption. Set all sever blades
operating modes into low noise mode. In case that the temperature
of other components will increase, the MMB will raise the fan speed
above the threshold of 45dB. The MMB will force all server blades to
operate with minimum mode. After the respective component
temperature returns to normal range, MMB will remove server blades
force situation.
Enforced Mode
Enforced Mode is designed to make sure that the chassis power consumption will not exceed the defined power consumption by the user during
the whole activation time of this mode. For this mode interfaces are provided to define the enforced power consumption in Watt and BTU/h. No
further components will be allowed to be powered on if the required power will exceed the value defined for the enforced mode.
In addition the BX400 MMB provide the possibility to activate chassis power consumption control modes in a define time. In this mode, MMB will
activate the chosen consumption control mode on a certain time depending on user setting.
Server Blade Power Consumption Control
Additional to the chassis power consumption control, BX400 MMB provides the possibility to control the server blade power consumption control.
There are three power consumption control modes for server blades:
Adaptive Mode (Priority Mode, Non-Priority Mode)
Enforced Mode
Minimum Mode
Adaptive Mode
Adaptive Mode is the default power consumption control setting of the server blade. This modes main intention is to distribute the power
budget for each server blades to ensure a high performance operating environment. In order to use adaptive mode efficiently depending on
system configuration and purpose, users needs to provide the following variables.
Define a so-called Re-Evaluation Period in which the BX400 MMB do the re-calculation of system power budget based on each server blade
power budget demand.
Define the importance of the server blade. There are two operating modes implemented (dynamic mode and static mode). The dynamic mode is
the default configuration within the adaptive mode setting. In this mode, the MMB determine automatically, based on the power demand the
importance of each server blade. Server Blades with the most power demand will get the highest priority. If there are more server blades with
same power demands, users should use the server blade priority table to set the sequence of the server blades. In the static mode, the MMB will
use the mentioned priority table to determine the importance of the server blade.

Enforced Mode
The enforced mode for the server blades is designed to make sure that the power consumption will not exceed the defined power consumption
by the user during the whole activation time of this mode. In case the enforced mode is active, the server blade power budgeting could be
changed by user through any possible interfaces.
Minimum Mode
If Server Blade has been set to operate with Minimum Mode, all possible power consumption savings will be initiated by iRMC to ensure the
lowest possible power consumption operating mode.
Note: The power consumption control for the enclosure always overrides the power consumption control of the individual server blades if conflict
arises (e.g. low noise mode)
PSU Redundancy Mode
There will be three redundancy modes, which are supported by the PRIMERGY BX400.
No Redundancy: All available PSUs will be considered as active PSU.
PSU Redundancy: MMB will provide (3+1, 2+1, 1+1 and 2+2) redundancy based on the total number of installed power supply modules in the
chassis.
Phase Redundancy: To be able to use the phase redundancy mode, users have to make sure that the PSU cables are configured to support
phase redundancy. The maximal current value for each phase, and to which phase the power supply module is connected can be defined via
interfaces. The PRIMERGY BX400 supports maximal four AC input phases. This function is only available if two or four PSUs are available.
PSU Dynamic Mode: Within this mode the MMB calculates the actual power consumption and activate only enough power supply modules to
support this power consumption. The unused PSUs will be put in STANDBY-Mode. In case of redundancy mode, the MMB will provide enough
redundancy to support the active PSUs.
