IF it wasn’t for the fact that it was electiontime, any laymanwould have thought it wasa rock concert.

The music blared and the crowd, whowere excitedly waiting for their heroine, were dancing, laughing and singing.Even Edmund van Vuuren, the usually

dignified DA MEC of Education, was danc-ing on the stage.Nosimo Balindlela, former Eastern Cape

ANC premier and now DA-MP, was enjoy-ing herself dancing (barefoot) among thecrowd.Other DAVIPs such as Donald Lee, Nqaba

Bhanga, Athol Trollip and Bobby Stevensonwere also moving to the beat.Because Helen Zille, DA leader, was on

the way to address them.

On Monday Zille visited NMMU’s Mis-sionvale Campus on her last visit to the Baybefore the national elections. And when Zille entered the hall, she was

surrounded by fans – everyone just wantedto hold her hand. When Zille, in tight jeans and tackies,

took to the stage a man shouted from thecrowd “Zille for president!”She answered him with “Viva!” and a fist

held high in the air.Outside the hall, away from all the politi-

cal excitement a few people had this to say:“What do I get if I vote? I cannot vote for

a councillor who cannot help me. It’s notworth it”.“There are too many people who are un-

employed,” said another. “We know therewill be job opportunities when they cometo fix the roads in Missionvale. But we arelooking for work that will last.”

TRANSNET has undertaken to repair the damagedhouses of all their staff who chose not to heed theNUMSA call to strike at Gqura Container Terminalthis month.

Workers who have already fixed damages to theirproperties will also be covered.

The strike, which started on April 25, had by its12th day seen over 15 attacks on non-striking work-ers living in the Motherwell, Wells Estate, Kwaza-khele and Zwide area.

Eastern Cape Terminals general manager, Siya-bulela Mhlaluka said, “As we all know, lawlessness, intimidation, and senseless violence have accompa-nied the work stoppage by a small minority of ourcolleagues at the terminal.

“This has resulted in houses belonging to those ofus who chose not to partake in the strike beingbombed, stoned and attacked. Some of our colleagueshave also reported intimidation.

Mhlaluka said the decision to cover cost of repairssignalled their commitment to protect the right oftheir colleagues who chose not to join the strike. “Italso signals our resolve to stand firm in the face ofsuch intimidation tactics and violence,” he added.

Transnet has also made available R100 000 rewardfor information that may lead to the arrest and suc-cessful prosecution of the perpetrators.

Warning striking NUMSA members Mhlakula saidarrests were imminent and Transnet would take nec-essary disciplinary measures against any employeeimplicated in the attacks.

Mhlakula also said while Transnet recognisedmembers’ rights to strike, striking workers must al-so take into consideration the “no work no pay” rule, striking workers must forfeit their right to bonusesand container incentive bonuses, and a lockout hasbeen implemented for striking members until theirunion withdraws its demand.

SILINDOKUHLE Boxing Promotions bossSibongile Nkebe promises this Boxing SouthAfrica (BSA) Calendar-year that started inApril is going to be his year of growth.

Currently categorised as a developmentpromoter, Motherwell, Port Elizabeth’s Nke-be wants his to be regarded as amajor boxingpromotions company in the country alongthe lines of the Mzimasi “Bra Mzi” Mnguni’sand Siphatho Handi’s Eyethu and Mamali

Boxing Promotion Companies, respectively.“I have to grow and graduate from the de-

velopment to the national and internationalboxing promoter quicker than it is expected,”said Nkebe, who added that he was hoping totake one of his boxers to the national or inter-national title challenge this year.

“With the likes of Nomampondomise Xoty-eni, a number 2 rated South African Light-weight contender ready to fight for the title,I don’t see the reason why we should not jointhe big promotional league,” said Nkebe.

He has EC Light heavyweight champion

Lesley Hope at no. 5, Supermiddle-weightMasixole Botile (4) who wants to challengeChristopher Buthelezi albeit in the Middle-weight division, and the trio of LungisaniJikani (6), Anelisa Gungqisa (9) and Lusind-iso Siyo (6) among boxers who are able tofight for any of the titles offered in fisticuffsin the country.

Siyo and Gungqisa lost in big fights in EastLondon recently, against SA Flyweightchampion Lwandile Sityatha and HerbertNkibiti (Welterweight), respectively.

Nkebe said a challenge for theWBAPanAf-

rican titles for his charges in the forseeablefuture was not too much to ask, consideringthat the duowerehighly rated in their respec-tive divisions.

“We also have the dark-horses, the straw-weights Lonwabo Roboshi, a puncher, andan artistic boxer Siphosethu Ncisana, whoare ready to show their mettle in the divisionin the not too distant future,” said Nkebe, adding that he has made his intentions clearto his boxers and their camps.

THE MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts andCulture in the Eastern Cape, Xoliswa Tom,officiated at the launchof theTownship Jun-ior Rugby Development Programme on Fri-day at the Coega Village in Port Elizabeth.

Through this programme, fixtures will beplayed, targetingplayers in theunder 12 andunder 15 categories. These fixtures arescheduled to start on 17 May 2014.

The emblem of the programme has at itscentre former black Springbok centreMbuleloMatomela tackling PeterMkata, al-so a former black springbok flyhalf, duringthe EPRU vs KWARU match at Dan QeqeStadium in 1978.

The programme has been started by theRugby Veterans in the Nelson Mandela Re-gion after a meeting on Women’s day lastyear where they posed themselves the ques-

tionof what role the rugby fraternity can play

in acknowledging the fearless struggleswaged by the Women of South Africa thatled to a democraticy enjoyed by all SouthAf-ricans black and white.

“In response to the question we all agreedthat there is nothing that any woman canbe proud of except the development of herchild,” said Vuyani Limba, secretary of theprogramme.

This response compelled theRugbyVeter-ans to establish the Township Junior RugbyDevelopment Programme (TJRDP ).

“AsRugbyVeteransweassessed the coun-try’s performance in attaining rugby trans-formation goals after the dawn of democra-cy asWomenof SouthAfrica fought fearless-ly to liberate our country. We all agreed thatour progress on this score leaves much tobe desired. Our assessment is based on thenumber of black players getting selected to

represent Springboks,” said Limba.“We all agreed something must be done

because it cannot be accepted that almost af-ter 20 years of democracy only 1 black quali-fies to be in the starting line up of Spring-boks,” he said.

They resolved that as previously disad-vantaged individuals they should stop com-plaining and embark on a sustainable pro-gramme that would yield good results forthe rugby transformation agenda.

“Our focus is on the township schools be-cause in former Model C schools rugby isgiven priority. The age groups targeted areunder 12 in Primary Schools and under 15in High Schools. All the players participat-ing in the TJRDP will be captured in a database because each child will be followedfrom this programme (entry level) until theSpringbok Graduation through the ECSouthern Kings Rugby Franchise comingback on the field in the 2016 rugby season,”

he said. For this programme the Nelson Mandela

metro is divided into 10 Zones.Schools will play fixtures against one an-

other everyWednesday. The Zonal Champi-ons will play Quarter Finals until the ulti-mate Finals for the NelsonMandela SchoolsMayoral Cup Championship.

Whilst fixtures unfold the officials fromeach zone will select Zonal Squads that willplay fixtures against one another every Sat-urday.

“From the Zonal Fixtures the NelsonMandela TJRDP Teams will be selected andthoroughly trained for National CravenWeek and Grant Kgomo Competitionsthrough the provincial structures.

“Undoubtedly the TJRDP initiative willenhance rugby development in our regionand ultimately make positive impact in theSouth African rugby tranformation agen-da,” said Limba.
